A track for land yachts could be opened by Christmas in the Bexley Reserve, if plans are approved this week.

The business has been started by Ian Brown who has lived in South-shore and Sumner for 30 years.

He owns a Muffin Break fran-chise.

Mr Brown said he hoped the new venture would “bring a bit of fun” to the area.

“I’ve been thinking for a while I would like to do something a little bit different. We saw all that land out in Bexley just waiting for something to be done there, and we thought it would be something re-ally positive for the area,” he said.

“There’s no shortage of wind out

in Bexley, and I think it’ll be a good, positive step toward revitalisation in the area.”

He put the idea to the city coun-cil in November 2011, and said the planning process had been a long one.

But he said both the city council and Environment Canterbury have been consulted throughout the

planning process, and he hoped the paperwork could be approved next month.

Once approved, the track is ex-pected to take about a month to build.

He plans to build a track for BloKarts, New Zealand designed wind-powered land yachts, and an-other track for electric drift karts.

• From page 1The Burwood-Pega-

sus Community Board will decide tonight whether to support his application for a five- year lease of part of Bexley Reserve.

The application will then go to the city council for final ap-proval.

Mr Brown said he hoped to provide cheap-er sessions for schools in the area, and believed the karts would appeal to families.

“Our kids are 21 and 19, but they’ve sailed Blokarts since they were knee high. I have a relative who is in his 80s and also loves the Blokarts, so we know this will really appeal to anyone.”

Quake repair grantA grant of $100,000 has been made towards the earthquake repairs of the St John New Brighton hall in Rawhiti Domain. The grant was made through the city council Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund last week, and will be put toward a new roof, windows and the internal fit out of the building.

Community forumA People’s Independent Republic of New Brighton community forum will be held next week to discuss “brightening up New Brighton”. The forum will be held from 6.30pm on Monday at the New Brighton Club.

Fun market dayA Pirate Market Day will be held this weekend at the New Brighton Mall. The market day will feature special entertainment, children’s ac-tivities and spot prizes for costumes, as well as the regular market stalls. The market will run from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, September 20. More information is available from the New Brighton Project.

Village project updateAn update on the New Brighton Sustainable Coastal Village project will be given to the Burwood-Pega-sus Community Board tonight. The aim is to create an environemental-ly-friendly “eco-village”, with shared living spaces to encourage a sense of community. The project is still in the concept stages. More informa-tion on the project can be found at www.nbscv.org.

A plan to run walking and cy-cling tracks over the site of the Burwood Landfill will be dis-cussed tonight.

The plan would be put in place in three years, after the landfill in Bottle Lake Forest

Park is closed. The cost of capping the site,

covering it in soil, landscaping and building tracks is estimat-ed at $3.9 million.

The plan will be put to the Burwood-Pegasus Community

Board for approval tonight.Pollution prevention mea-

sures on the land will be dis-cussed at the meeting.

Once the landfill is grassed over, it is expected to create a 25m hill in the park.

Experience Lake Terrace Kindergarten

Opening Hours7.30am-5.30pm Monday-Friday

Lake Terrace Kindergarten located in Burwood is a privately-owned centre in eastern Christchurch catering to a child’s inquisitive mind. This beautiful kindergarten was established in 2007 and designed to cater to the wonderment of children.

The Lake Terrace Kindergarten is a child centred environment full of untapped discoveries where children can learn about their world. There are many curriculum choices and areas of interest for a child to participate in, including science, maths, physical play, art, music, drama, and literacy.

Children learn about social responsibility through their play, in a natural and holistic way.

Children are encouraged to participate in self-help experiences to learn about and understand how to manage their own care and nutrition requirements, before entering the primary school setting.

The kindergarten offers places to children aged between 3.5and 6years of age.

They offer 20hour ECE spaces, with no charge up to three days a week. (Conditions apply)

Strong links between the local schools and the Lake Terrace Kindergarten allow for a seamless and smooth transition into the primary school setting when your child makes that transition.

Lake Terrace offers an embedded transition programme including opportunities of literacy and numeracy practice every day, to help prepare children for entering school.

The Lake Terrace Kindergarten philosophy is underpinned by the knowledge that children learn naturally through play, and that the relationships built in the early learning years support this learning in the best possible way.

As a team their teachers value and respect each other, children and their families and therefore, provide a truly respectful learning environment for the children in their setting.

They value the relationships their kindergarten aged children have with others in the community, and provide many opportunities for those relationships to foster and grow.

Lake Terrace Preschool, where learning, loving and partnership go hand in hand. Please feel free to pop in or call Rachel 383 4757 to organise a visit or find out more information.

City councillor Glenn Livingstone believes a bigger city council could help to improve democracy.

Appointing more city councillors is one idea which will be looked at in a city council representation re-view, which is due next year.

That could involve shrinking the wards and appointing just one councillor to each ward.

Cr Livingstone said there had been a feeling of “a lack of democracy” in communities since the earthquakes.

He believed smaller wards centred around communities would help.

There are currently 14 council-lors on the city council, and he said he was open to expanding it to al-low for more wards.

“I’m open to having a big-ger council too, not as big as the previous one but slightly bigger. You’ve got to think of the dynamics and management of it, but I think 20 councillors would be fine.”

However, some of his fellow councillors were opposed to the plan.

Fendalton-Waimairi ward coun-cillor Jamie Gough said he would like to see a smaller city council.

“A decade ago there were 24 councillors around the table, and I

don’t know how they got anything done. So I think returning to that would be a terrible idea, an abomi-nation – it would be death by red tape and bureaucrats.

“Admittedly we’re the second largest city in the country and you do need representation, but it’s tough enough already with four-teen of us around the table.”

Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck said she would like to keep an open mind before the review took place.

But through the review, she said she

would like to see more decision making placed in the hands of the communities.

“One thing I have learnt is that people know their own communi-ties incredibly well, so if decisions rest in their hands they will gener-ally make the right decisions for their community.”

She said that the internet opened up possibilities for more commu-nity consultation on projects, simi-lar to what is being done in the east through the Evo::Space project.

All city councils need to review how their communities are repre-sented at least once every six years.

The review was postponed in 2011 due to the earthquakes, but must be completed by August next year.

Call for more councillors

SURPRISE: If you’d like to know how to make the deputy prime minister giggle – try vinegar and baking soda mixed in a cake. Bill English attended a Wainoni Avonside Community Services Trust event to mark the four-year anniversary of the September 2010 earthquake, and received several surprises during his visit, including a bubbling “liquefaction cake”. He also acknowledged the frustration of the residents of the area during the visit, including the eight members who are still struggling with insurance issues.

After years of service in their com-munities, 19 “older but exceptional” Age Concern Canterbury volun-teers have been recognised for their work.

They were presented with awards for their service at the Papanui RSA last Friday. This is what was said about the work of some of the local volunteers.Coleen Dunlop – Parklands

Coleen has volunteered for Wai-noni/Avonside Community Ser-vices Trust for three days, three and a half hours a day for the last 12 and a half years. She is the “re-freshments manager” and takes charge of all the morning and af-ternoon teas as well as special lun-cheon occasions. At times there can be up to 100 people in atten-dance. Coleen remembers how all the regular people have their cup-pas and always chats with them re-garding current issues. She is genu-inely interested and caring about people. Age Concern Canterbury often host educational seminars at Wainoni and Coleen will also come in and assist with catering/kitchen cleaning. The kitchen is always left in ultra-clean condition. Coleen is always the first to assist with run-ning or organising events. Coleen is also the Vege Co-op co-ordinator and every Tuesday morning she is at St Faith’s New Brighton pack-ing for the Vege Co-op and then transports the vege/fruit packs to Wainoni, often dropping veges off to people en route.Nancy van den Ende – Linwood

Nancy has been volunteering as a

host for Age Concern Canterbury’s mini-bus service for 14 years. Every month Nancy will host a group at the Linwood Resource Centre with help from her friends, catering up to 10 people at a time. She will also host at her own house at least once every three months or at a moment’s notice if the mini-bus service has a cancellation of a host. Nancy is always welcoming and obliging and enjoys having Age Concern clients for a cuppa. She is a very good listener and loves to hear the stories that Age Concern clients share and

is a regular attendee at the monthly Age Concern volunteers meeting. A member of her Church Women’s Fellowship group, she organises guest speakers for the regular meetings.Colin Hanson – Avondale

Colin was a volunteer driver for Age Concern Canterbury’s mini-bus service for 23 years and recent-ly retired due to personal reasons. Colin would respond to an emer-gency call from the co-ordinator and sometimes drive a group twice a week. If a driver called in sick on

a particular day Colin would be the go to man with only a couple of hour’s notice. He has a great sense of humour and would al-ways have a story to tell staff and clients. Close to a Christmas Colin would organise a Christmas outing for the mini-bus clients, gathering donations of goodies for those who went with him on the bus. He was also known to sing along, playing the spoons at the outings or Age Concern Canterbury’s volunteers’ functions. Colin would also assist with the delivery of Age Concern

Canterbury’s quarterly newspaper Keeping On, and go the extra mile for Age Concern Canterbury and other organisations such as the RSA.Pam Harris

Pam came to New Zealand in 1999 having volunteered and then worked in paid work for a local community organisation in the United Kingdom. Pam has been volunteering at Age Concern Canterbury now for 14 years, working either on reception or as a client liaison.

In the liaison role Pam works as a bridge between us and the individual who is often quite lonely and vulnerable. She does a great job phoning and speaking with them at length, and ensures that they have ongoing support. It’s not always easy work and we thank Pam for her patience and kind manner.Elsie Hartley

Elsie has been a volunteer visitor for Age Concern Canter-bury’s Accredited Visiting Ser-vice since 2001 and has made more than 400 visits. She has be-come good friends with her cli-ents and they have seen her as an extended family member. Elsie’s quiet personality and empathy has been at work throughout her 13 years of AVS service for Age Concern Canterbury. Her com-mitment and attendance at the

Age Concern monthly meetings is outstanding and Elsie has gone the extra mile to attend courses and meetings, to share the infor-mation that she learns with her clients. She is a true champion.Jan Ogilvie

Jan has been a reception vol-unteer at Age Concern Can-terbury for 19 years. We thor-oughly enjoy her company and the many tales she has to tell. Jan volunteers on a Tuesday morn-ing and a Wednesday afternoon on reception and puts her hand up for more to help us out. She is always helpful and friendly to those at the desk or on the end of the phone and with her broad historical knowledge of our ser-vices, knows exactly where to re-fer the caller for help. Thank you Jan for your length of service and for being so generous to others.

A cycle and walkways network and a city to sea river park are among the most popular proposals to aid earthquake recovery in the eastern suburbs.

That’s according to feedback on the community engagement web-site EVO::SPACE.

The website was set up by a group of community leaders calling them-selves Eastern Visions whose stated aim is to create meaningful public participation in decision making and facilitate an agreed big-picture recovery plan for the area.

Group convener and former city councillor Peter Beck told a city council earthquake recovery com-mittee of the whole meeting last week that there was no budget for any of the proposals as they were so far just ideas in a preliminary stage.

“This is about a community driv-en project which will then justify

the investment in feasibility studies and business case accordingly.”

Avon-Otakaro Network co-chairman Evan Smith, also spoke on behalf of the group. He said the group didn’t necessarily endorse all the proposals and some were mu-tually exclusive.

Of the more than 40 proposals which had been loaded on to the website, 10 were in the greater New Brighton area and 22 were on red zoned residential land.

The Canterbury Earthquake Re-covery Authority owned the land for 21 sites, while the city council owned 13 sites, the Ministry of Education owned four and the rest were private.

“A number of the proposals here are in sport and recreation and we think there is the potential here to turn the whole of the east into the aquatic playground of the city,” Mr Smith said.

Mr Beck said the project had

been running for eight weeks and there had been more than 1250 registrations made on the website. People would be able to contribute until September 30 when the re-sults would be analysed.

Mr Beck asked the city council to actively promote, support and value the project.

“We’re not just talking about a vision for the next five or 10 years, Eastern Vision is looking to the next 50 to 100 years as to what that might be like,” Mr Beck said.

By taking heed of the project, the city council would be validating and listening to the community.

“There has been too much of the other stuff over the last four years where the community has felt dis-enfranchised,” he said.

He called for the city council to be flexible in its decision making, citing a need to consider potential land use proposals when replacing infrastructure.

BY GABRIELLE STUART

Four years on from the Septem-ber earthquake, there are new residents moving into the red zone.

Native pukeko, bellbird and kereru are just some of the birds making their homes in red zone areas, while there have been recent sightings of rare kooka-burra, ibis and bittern in the area.

There are no complaints from the new residents about the state of roads, housing or insur-ance, but local bird experts are concerned they may face bigger problems.

Graham Evans of the Christ-church Bird Club said predators, like feral cats, rats and possums, were also moving into the area.

“One of our concerns is that feral cats and rats could be a threat to the birds as they move in, and their numbers could in-crease just as quickly. Measures need to be looked at to keep those predators away from birds that are moving in, especially when they are vulnerable.”

He said that birds were particularly vulnerable when they were nesting in spring, or moulting in late summer.

“The concern is that if some-thing isn’t done there could be a lot of natives killed by these predators.”

Niall Mugan, founder of the

Birds of Christchurch bird-watching site, agreed.

He said if efforts weren’t made to preserve the habitat for the birds, they could disappear as quickly as they arrived.

“There have been birds seen in the red zone that hadn’t been seen for a long time. Birds are very quick to take up homes, but once the rebuild starts we are likely to lose them again.”

He said that similar things had been seen in other cities after disasters.

“I’ve been told about times after the war, when London was flattened, and some very rare birds came and nested in the rubble.”

He said most rare birds were endangered because of lack of

habitat, and believed setting aside space for a reserve could make a difference.

But he said that the first step towards creating a sanctuary would be identifying which birds were in the area.

The Avon-Otakaro Network, a group formed after the earthquake to look at issues around the river and red zone, has already developed plans for a bird sanctuary.

The group would like to build a pred-ator proof fence around the Travis Wetland and part of the Burwood red

zone, which would be open to the public and could include an education centre.

They estimate the cost of the project at about $7 million, with the fence alone priced at about $200,000 per kilometre.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority recently released a report which recom-mended grassing the red zone and grazing sheep on it, as the cheapest way to maintain it.

But growing grass on the cleared red zone land has been costed at about $7.5 million, and concerns have been raised about dog attacks and rustling if sheep were grazed in the city.

More information on the bird sanctuary project can be found at www.avonotakaronetwork.co.nz, or www.evospace.co.nz.

Bird sightings in the area can be reported at www.birdsof-christchurch.co.nz.

Aranui High School travelled to Auckland last week, to play in the national secondary schools rugby league development tournament, where they finished third.

After topping their group with ease, beating Whangarei Boys’ High School 24-18, Greymouth High School 34-12, and Pakuranga College 42-22, they drew Wesley College in the semi-finals.

Even though Aranui were the smaller side, they took the game to their opposition, and were ahead with five minutes remaining, before Wesley scored a late winner, with the score finishing 22-24 in their favour.

Aranui then beat Northcote Col-lege in the third and fourth playoff, 32-12.

Cyrus Timo-Latu, who plays for the Canterbury Bulls, was given the development grade’s best and fairest award, and was also selected in the New Zealand secondary schools team to play a New South Wales team later this month.

Aranui also won the best cultural salute for their haka, and coach Te Wairau was named coach of the tournament.

Aranui High School’s senior A netball team competed in the South Is-land secondary school netball championship for the first time since 2009 last week, and were champi-ons in the C grade.

Tired after the long trip down to In-vercargill, and a bit nervous to boot, they lost their first game, against Lawrence Area School, by five points.

This spurred them into ac-tion, as they went on to win the rest of their pool games convincingly, earning a semi-final against John Paul II High School, which they won 37-28.

The final was a rematch with Lawrence Area School, and this time Aranui came out on top, 37-29.

NUMBER ONE: Avonside Girls’ High School’s first XI hockey side won the Jenny Hair Cup, which was held in Greymouth as part of national winter tournament week. BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

A week for gas. LPG to be more precise. There were two separate in-cidents that involved plenty of work for firefighters and other agencies.

The first, on Monday was just a short stroll from the Sockburn Fire Station at the Wigram Control Tower where a digger managed to fracture a gas supply line.

The incident took well over an hour and involved the evacuation of a lot of people in the area. This is a precautionary measure.

Any ignition source and the right mix can be catastrophic, as in Man-gere in Auckland on Wednesday when some young folks huffing propane were smoking while doing so. They were critically injured at the time of writing.

The second incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Basil Pl, Mt Pleasant when a gas deliv-ery truck left the road and crashed down the hill. Three fire appliances, and a command unit responded to work with the gas company to en-sure no major escape of gas.

More arson in Peterborough St and River Rd earlier this week. These incidents die down and then rise up regularly. They are a danger to anyone who may be dossing in the empty house targeted, they are a danger to the firefighters attend-ing and they are even a danger to the arsonists themselves.

Worried about a MOLE?

[Edition datE]2

Helping you rejoin theconversation

Are you missing out on the conversation at restaurants or family gatherings?

Can’t hear your grandchildren? Is your family complaining you can’t hear? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to get

your hearing checked.Gordon & Till Audiology are here to

help to you enjoy life again by improving your hearing. They offer hearing tests for adults and children over five, hearing aid consultations including selection, fittings and counselling, assessment and management of

tinnitus (persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears) and advice on protecting your hearing.

Gordon & Till Audiology is a friendly, independent hearing clinic owned by Carolyn Gordon and Carolyn Till, handily located in Edgeware, Christchurch. The two audiologists have a combined experience of over 30 years. They have no financial links with any of the hearing aid companies that supply their products. This means that they are free to choose the best hearing solution

for you without financial influence. Carolyn Gordon has a special interest

in tinnitus (noises in the ears/head) and is trained in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. Those who experience bothersome tinnitus can be helped by this effective technique. Management of tinnitus takes time and involves sound therapy, counselling and sometimes amplification over a period of time.

Both Carolyns strongly believe in the importance of hearing and say any loss of hearing should not be ignored. As hearing loss usually occurs slowly, people are often unaware of the problem. Family members often notice first. Untreated hearing loss is also linked to a higher incidence of health problems such as dementia, brain volume loss and also higher hospitalisation rates than for those with normal hearing later in life.

Loss of hearing can affect the ability of working people to do their jobs and in some occupations, jeopardise safety. Due to the recent increase in ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) funding, people with a work noise history, who are eligible for ACC, can get an increased contribution towards hearing aids - some models may even be free. So, if you have a history of work noise exposure or are an existing ACC client, call Gordon & Till Audiology to arrange an appointment to have a free initial consultation.

The audiologists encourage anyone with concerns about their hearing or tinnitus to make an appointment, phone 385 6036. Gordon & Till Audiology is located at 701 Barbadoes Street, near Warrington St. It is on the M and No. 44 bus routes and there is off-street parking. Hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, or after hours by arrangement.

FOOD

A simple kumara rosti

Ingredients1 Kumara1 tsp Salt1 tsp Coconut oil

DirectionsPeel and grate the kumara and mix through the salt. Cover and leave to sit for 15-20 minutes.

When ready to cook, take handfuls of the mixture and squeeze out as much liquid as you can (the more the better to prevent soggy rosti).

Place the squeezed kumara in another bowl and mix through a little pepper.

Heat some coconut oil in a frying pan to a medium heat. Form the kumara into flat rounds and fry until golden on both sides. You want your rosti cooked through, so ensure your pan is not too hot.

Season with salt to taste and top with a fried steak, fillet of fish or egg.

Moroccan fish

Ingredients1 Lemon, rind only, cut into thin strips2 cloves Crushed garlic1 tsp Sumac powder2 tsp Ground cumin½ tsp Crushed chilli, paste800g Canned tomatoes, 2 x cans, chopped Moroccan style4 pieces White-fleshed fish fillets, skinned and boned1 to serve Fresh coriander

1 to serve Lemon, wedges2 Onions, peeled and finely chopped

DirectionsHeat oil in a large frying pan and add onion, garlic, lemon rind, sumac, cumin, crushed chilli paste and tomatoes.

Cook, stirring often, for 2 minutes.Cut fish into 6cm pieces. Add to tomato

mixture and cook over a medium heat until fish is cooked through.

Serve with couscous and garnish with coriander and lemon wedges.

Mushrooms in mustard sauceServes 4 This unusual salad or hors-d’oeuvre is easy to make and brings out the best in a mushroom. The longer you marinate them, the softer and juicier they become.

Ingredients3 Tbsp Dijon mustard1 clove Garlic, mashed with ½ tsp salt1 Tbsp White wine vinegar1 Lemon, freshly juiced3 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil2 Tbsp Walnut oil500g Mushrooms, we used brown, white button, and portobello1 Lemon, freshly zested1 handful Chervil, or parsley leaves

DirectionsFor the sauce, to a screw top jar add dijon mustard, garlic, white wine vinegar, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, walnut oil and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Shake like mad to emulsify into a dressing.

To marinate, brush off any loose dirt from the mushrooms using your fingers, that’s what they’re for after all! Using a sharp knife, finely slice into a large mixing bowl. Pour the sauce over the mushrooms, toss well and leave to marinate for 1-3 hours.

To serve, toss through lemon zest and chervil (or parsley) leaves. Taste and season accordingly.

Playtime for children in the east just got better, after a $20,000 grant from Youthtown for new play equipment.

Children at Barnardos early learning centres in Richmond and Mairehau re-ceived new bikes, crash pads, slides, balance beams, tunnels, and climbing frames.

Richmond centre head teacher Victoria Kees said the children were enjoying the new equipment.

“The tamariki just love zooming around on their new bikes and challenging them-selves on the climbing frames. Having an exciting outdoor environment makes a huge

difference to children’s learning, especially in terms of developing motor skills and learning about their bodies and the physical environment.”

The grant was made through the Youth-town Gaming Trust, which aims to support youth development, and split between three centres.

Service manager Sue Gleeson said the grant was exceptional.

“I would like to thank Youthtown for their enormous generosity with this dona-tion, it is truly an exceptional gift that the children from all three centres will gain so much enjoyment from.”

as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well-prepared to start primary school.

Families are more than welcome to call in at any time to view the programme and meet the teachers.

Many housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best to

talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation.

Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9 kilowatts of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma), benefits no other heating appliance can offer.

Ducted and multi systems are becoming increasingly popular, providing climate-controlled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems.

Enviro Master Ltd is your air conditioning and heat pump specialist and has been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now.

Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands, including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump.

Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as

effectively and efficiently as possible, resulting in a healthy and hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump cleaned. We, at Enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

We currently have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price on selected models.

• Wood is cost-effective, making it the cheapest form of heating, and as wood is a renewable energy source it is a sound environmental choice.South Island Hardware has an extensive
