e Silver Tray Ceremony Is Coming!By Ludovica Bianchi

e Silver Tray Ceremony is a new tradition being introduced to Ran-cho Solano where the seven full IB Diploma seniors Austin Best, Akram Hachem, Madison Koath, Dhinesh Raj, Margaret Ramsey, Nghi Tran, and Hongming (Kevin)Wang are being celebrated for com-pleting their EEs. EE, short for ex-tended essay, is an essay that IB Di-ploma students spend their junior and senior year, in a nine month period, writing a four thousand word essay on a topic they chose. In this ceremony the seniors will dress formally and share a brief summa-ry of their essay. Before the seniors present their essays, they will light candles of knowledge with their ad-

visors. e chamber orchestra will also perform for the event. e cer-

Mustang Volleyball Girls Spiking With SuccessBy Amelie Clark

e JV volleyball team is having a fantastic season. ey have won ve matches in a row, and a total of six matches for the season– a re-cord for Rancho in JV volleyball. e JV team con-sists of eight girls: Ludovica Bianchi, Bella Rose, Kait-len Von Colditz, Cassandra Mar-tian, Amber He, Rafaella Rocha, Tara Hines, Amelie Clark, and Dan Dang. ese girls are all in tenth and eleventh grade with little previous experience com-peting in volleyball. All of the girls have formed strong bonds and are very supportive of each other, which is obvious when watching them play. When speaking to Ludo, she says “ e JV volleyball team feels like a second family”. Ludo recently

moved from It-aly with English being her sec-ond language. She continues by explaining “the volleyball team, as well as Rancho, has been so kind, and I am glad to be part of this group of girls.” e JV team has been hard at work, prac-ticing almost every day for

up to two hours. Some of the drills that are part of prac-tice include hitting, serving, passing, and a tough amount of conditioning. We can see great improvement from all of the girls as the season goes on. e JV girls have really been enjoying volleyball and are looking forward to the upcoming games.

emony will be taking place October

Arabian Library, the Ants in the CanyonBy Myra Kamal

When one walks into the Arabian Library they are immediately sub-merged in the unique architecture and linear highlights. One may even say it is exotic to the likes of Scotts-dale. e library overtakes the sun and casts eerie shadows throughout the day. Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “Organic architecture seeks superior sense of use and a ner sense of comfort, expressed in or-ganic simplicity.” is building, of simple lines and shadows speak for the architect’s theory. is building is a piece of artwork that opens your eyes. It shows you how small we re-ally are. Inside the Library I asked if this library represented anything. A volunteer told me this library was based o the desert slot canyons of northern Arizona. e library echoes this powerful natural se-quence. An earthen and stone roof is thrust from the desert oor, tak-ing with it the native grasses, shrub and stone texture.

It jars into the sky creating loom-ing shadows while at the same time it attempts to t in with the nature surrounding it. It is funny how this building is trying to become part of the natural soul of the desert. I see this everywhere. e tension between Man Made and Nature is clearly visible. However it seems like this time, man’s purpose was to create peace and give into the oppo-sition of nature. is library’s inten-tion is to blend in as representing the linear canyons. However, it will never be the same. is building and area surrounding is still touched by the golden thumb of man and has le an imprint on the natural set-ting of the desert. Height also has much to do with the obsession of war. I noticed the library stands tall as if making a statement to prove its strength to nature. I notice only the Man-made side is doing this. Its jus-ti cation for this is to show its worth and that it can belong in nature.

But when will Man-Made ever re-alize that its worth will always be based on the inside?People in the library were scarce in the height of the a ernoon. I inter-viewed a man named Jim who was working on his laptop at the time I approached him. I wondered why he had chosen to study at this li-brary. He told me, “I like quiet places to think and to work. You don’t always get that these days. Everyone needs their own special quiet.”

Rancho’s cross country team has been hard at work running in the heat! ere are a total of eleven team members, four boys and seven girls, consisting of the following students: Austin Best, Yifan Lei, Guillermo De Fernando Valido, Sam Roberts, Leah Darwin, Ombeline Francoise, Madison Liley, Sophia Linkous, Yuna Shprecher, Enya Smilovic, and Gabriella Velez. Cross coun-try is de nitely not for the faint of heart, with temperatures of over one hundred degrees that runners have come to expect. However, the team makes sure to take a few walking breaks every now and then and take a drink out of their water bottles, which Coach Reich carries around in his bicycle’s basket. e morning practices, twice a week, are a welcome relief from the heat of the a ernoons, and a nice time for a casual chat with teammates. ey enjoy a wholesome breakfast

of bagels and shmears and chocolate milk a er every early morning run, which makes the four miles worth it! e cross country meets are around three miles long; the runners make sure to douse themselves in water beforehand to keep themselves cool. Meets are divided between girls and boys, and those not running always make sure to cheer for their team-mates as loud as possible. When asked why he joined, Yifan

said, “I can’t play soccer very well, but running makes me feel free and I really enjoy it! I really like my team-mates, too.” Ombeline adds, “I don’t understand why it’s in the summer, but it makes me feel healthy and we have a great team!” Everyone agrees that it’s a great sport and a great workout, and at the end of the day it’s de nitely worth it.

Need a Date for Homecoming?Dear Diallah,Help me! Homcoming is almost here and I still have no date. I am freaking out. First of all, all three of my best friends got asked. Not only did they all get asked, but by the person who they’d wanted to ask them. I really want this one boy in my Chemistry class to ask me, but I have never even had the guts to say hello to him. It is possible that he does not know my name, which makes matters worse. I am too shy to talk to him, but I really want him to ask me. What should I do? How do I approach him? Desperately Needs a Date

Dear Desperately Needs a Date,I completely understand how you feel and I think you should put your-self out there. I know it sounds ter-rifying, and if you don’t want to do it in person, might I suggest a note? It’s a personal and easy way to tell someone how you feel. You can slip it into his backpack or in his locker. You never know, but you can’t knock it till you try it. If all else fails, just re-member you can still have fun with your friends at the dance because YOU DON’T NEED NO MAN!

Sincerely, Diallah
