The CHKD Pediatric Trauma Conference is a one-day pediatric conference designed to provide knowledge and skills related to pediatric trauma. In addition, we seek to enhance our community and pediatric colleague’s ability to manage pediatric trauma cases. The conference will provide various learning methodologies presented by experts in the areas of pediatric trauma.

Continuing Medical Education:Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters is accredited by the Medical Society of Virginia to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

8 a.m. Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) Trauma Services Program Ann Kuhn, MD, FACS, FAAP, Trauma Program Medical Director, CHKD Discuss the development of the pediatric trauma program at CHKD, including institutional changes that needed to occur, lessons learned, and the future direction of the program.

9:15 a.m. Pediatric Burns Michelle K. Hughes, D.O., FAAP, CHKD Review the pathophysiology of pediatric burns, different classifications, evaluation of specific burns, and course of treatment. Discuss management of the pediatric airway in reference to smoke inhalation from house fires, etc.

10:20 a.m. Traumatic Injuries in Child Abuse Suzanne P. Starling, MD, CHKD Recognize multiple common manifestations of child abuse as well as recall the management and possible outcomes of such cases. Identify common traumatic injuries of child abuse, review the diagnostic workup of child abuse cases, and understand the potential outcomes of child physical abuse.

11:15 a.m. Considerations in Pediatric Orthopedic Injuries Allison Crepeau, MD, CHKD Distinguish the differences between adult orthopedic injuries vs. pediatric injuries. Recall the proper evaluation and treatment of traumatic orthopedic injuries seen in the pediatric population in both the pre-hospital and hospital settings.

12:55 p.m. Blast Injuries Margaret McGuire, MD, CHKD Review the different types of blast injuries through the review of a related case.

1:45 p.m. Air Transport and the Pediatric Patient Denise Baylous, MSN, RN, CCRN, CFRN, NREMT-P, Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance Discuss air transport physiology and considerations when transporting the pediatric patient.

2:35 p.m. Break

2:50 p.m. Traumatic Head Injuries Rupa Kapoor, MD, CHKD Discuss how to identify and perform initial evaluation of head injury in the pediatric patient. Recall best practices in the emergency management of the pediatric head injury will be presented.

3:45 p.m. Second Victim Support Karen Mitchell, MSN, RN, CCRC, Vice President, Patient Care Services Chief Nursing Officer, CHKD Define “second victim”. Review the recovery stages of a second victim and how the Scott Three-Tiered Interventional Model of Second Victim Support program works, as well as the CHKD based Support U program.
