IAS Presentation First PolicyIAS policy requires that papers be presented at approved conferences to become eligible for review and possible publication in
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications or IEEE Industry Applications Magazine.
•Conferences for which all papers are eligible for review: These are generally conferences where IAS is a financial sponsor, and
includes APEC, ESW, CIC, REPC, I&CPS, PPIC, ECCE, PCIC, and the Annual Meeting. The IAS Executive Board may, from time to
time, add other conferences to this list.
•Conference for which a limited number of papers (typically not more than 20% of those presented at the conference) are eligible for
review: as explicitly agreed in a 'memorandum of understanding' (MOU) between the conference organizers and the IAS Executive
Board.
• The organizers of these conferences are expected to notify authors about the outcome of that selection process and to
forward the list of papers that have been selected for review to IAS.
• Normally, EiC of Transactions, reviews this list and assigns papers to specific committees who are then expected to
promptly invite the authors to submit manuscripts for review.
•Papers originating at conferences that do not explicitly appear in the list on the IAS Web Site are not eligible for review or
publication by IAS, and the authors of those papers should not be given submission invitations.
•Questions about the eligibility of papers from specific conferences should be directed (jointly) to EiC, IAS Transactions, and Chair,
IAS Meetings Department.
Authors should understand that IEEE Policy prohibits verbatim publication in an IEEE periodical of conference papers that are
already ‘in the literature’. To comply with this policy, authors are expected to revise conference papers submitted for review
by IAS. Revisions may include additions or deletions while maintaining the original ‘intent, methods and conclusions’ of the
conference paper, but must always include addition of a reference citation to the conference paper.

How does it work?Scope covers the entire scope of IAS
Papers are open access – everyone can read them without firewall
Anyone can submit, without conference requirements
Like most other journals
Very fast response time
Papers will be accepted, accepted with minor changes, or rejected
Goal is to have papers on Xplore 7-8 weeks from submission date

Why are we launching this?
Response to EU “Plan S” and other funding
agency open access mandates
Potential to bring IAS to a wider global audience of
readers and authors

In Memoriam - Professor Robert D. Lorenz
Robert Donald “Bob” Lorenz, distinguished IAS member and IEEE Life Fellow, passed away on
January 27, at age 72. He received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of
Wisconsin, Madison, and the M.B.A. degree from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. From
1969 to 1970, he did his Master thesis research in adaptive control of machine tools at the Technical
University of Aachen. From 1972 to 1982, he was a member of the research staff with the Gleason
Works, Rochester, NY, working on high-performance drives and synchronized motion control. Since
1984 he was with the faculty with the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where in 1999 he was named
the Mead Witter Foundation Consolidated Papers Professor of Controls Engineering in both the
Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
In 2016, he was named Elmer R. and Janet A. Kaiser Chair. Prof. Lorenz was Codirector of the
Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium, the world’s largest industrial
research consortium on motor drives and power electronics. He was the Research Leader for control
and sensor integration and integrated modular motor drives with the National Science Foundation
Engineering Research Center for Power Electronic Systems. Prof. Lorenz was the Industry
Applications Society (IAS) President in 2001, an IAS Distinguished Lecturer in 2000/2001, the IEEE
Division II Director in 2005/2006, past Chair of the IAS Awards Department, and past Chair of the IAS
Industrial Drives Committee. In addition to his distinguished service to IAS, he was active in the IEEE
Power Electronics Society, the IEEE Sensor Council, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers,
the Instrument Society of America, the International Society for Optical Engineers, and the European
Power Electronics (EPE) Committee. He authored over 300 published technical papers and held 26
patents. His awards included the IAS Outstanding Achievement Award, the EPE Power Electronics
and Motion Control Outstanding Achievement Award, the IAS Distinguished Service Award, the IEEE
Richard Harold Kaufmann Technical Field Award, the EPE Outstanding Achievement Award, and 34
