INTRODUCTION

The rapidly evolving technology and media landscape is now producing an accessible range of new media beyond print and broadcast. New media includes a range of representations such as games and stimulations; media rich e-books, comics and info graphics; mobile computing and augmentedreality ; blogs, social networks, video chat and other modes of connectivity etc. These new media are promising to expand and challenge our notions of learning and literacy.

These new media are also increasingly being used in educational context that not only span formal K-16 classroom environment but also informal learning environments. In this assignment, the role of “new medias” like Google Docs, digital magazine editing, E-portfolio in modern educational scenario is explored.

E-Portfolio

An electronic portfolio (also known as e-portfolio, digital portfolio or online portfolio ) is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the web. Such electronic evidence may include inputted text, electronic files, images, multimedia, blog entries and hyperlink.E-portfolios are both demonstrations of the user’s abilities and platforms for self-expression and if they are online, they can be maintained dynamically over time.

An e-portfolio can be seen as a type of learning record that provides actual evidence of achievement. Learning records are closely related to the Learning plan (an online document used to plan learning, usually over an extended period of time), an emerging tool that is being used to manage learning by individuals, teams, organizations etc. To the extent that a Personal Learning Environment (systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning) captures and displays a learning record, it also might be understood to be an electronic portfolio.

E-portfolios, like traditional portfolios, can facilitate students’ reflection on their own learning, leading to more awareness of learning strategies and needs.

There are three main types of e-portfolio :-

1)Developmental e-portfolio

A developmental e-portfolio can show the advancement of skill over a period of time rubrics. The main purpose is to provide an avenue for communication between student and instructor.

2

Page 7: Pedagogy

2)Assessment e-portfolio

An assessment portfolio will demonstrate skills and competence in a particular domain or area.

3)Showcase e-portfolio

A showcase portfolio highlights stellar work in a specific area, it is typically shown to potential employers to gain employment. When it is used for job application, it is sometimes called career portfolio.

Most e-portfolios are a mix of these three main types to create a hybrid portfolio. Today e-portfolios are gaining popularity in schools, higher education, Assessment, Accreditation, Recognition of prior learning (RPL) etc. There are many educational e-portfolio services like Desire 2 Learn, Digication, E-scape, Elgg, Live Text, MAPS, Passport, Pebble Pad, R campus, Taskstream etc.

E-portfolio in Education

In education, e-portfolio is a collection of students’ work that can advance learning by providing a way for them to organize, archive and display work. The electronic format helps instructors to evaluate student portfolios via Internet, CD-ROM, DVD etc. Electronic portfolios have become popular alternative to paper based portfolio because they provide the opportunity to review, communicate and give feedback in an asynchronous manner. In addition , students are able to reflect on their work, which makes the experience of creating the e- portfolio meaningful. A student e- portfolio may be shared with a prospective employer or used to record the achievement of programme or course specific learning outcomes. In education, e-portfolio has six major functions :

3

Page 8: Pedagogy

1) Document, skill and learning2) Record and track development with a program3) Plan educational program4) Evaluate and monitor performance5) Evaluate a course6) Find a job

In general e-portfolios promote critical thinking and support the development of technology literacy skills. A teaching e-portfolio is used to showcase career adjustments. Faculties are encouraged to use e-portfolios to foster collaborative learning environment where more competent students can provide feedback to peers. When students are given opportunity to guide others, it facilitates peer to peer teaching and learning which leads to deeper understanding of the lesson. Next generation education e-portfolios like Digication can assist students to achieve information that is specific to each lesson in a course.

E- portfolios also help students to foster an independent and autonomous way of thinking . They are in charge of what they are learning and the choice of where to demonstrate their proficiency. They are also forced to reflect on what they have learned and how they plan to improve in future. This helps them to become better critical thinkers and help them to develop their writing and multimedia skills.

Today many students are using multimedia such as Face book and Twitter –all informal settings. The e-portfolio on the other hand is a more formal setting where students must apply their knowledge of how the web works and the message they want to convey. Many universities and schools are currently working to make sure the students are gaining practice and experience with e-portfolio so that they are able to use them to the best of their ability.

Online Editing in Wikipedia

More and more classrooms are now learning, creating, reading and testing online. In order to keep with our technologically demanding lifestyles, the traditional classroom is making way for such innovative tools as wiki. Not only is this an inexpensive way to manage classrooms, its also a fun way to engage students in content across the curriculum.

Wiki is an online application that allows users to contribute to or edit its contents. Essentially, a Wiki is a web page with an open editing system. According to recent research, Wikis provide a vehicle for exercising most, if not all, of Bloom’s ‘higher order thinking’ activities.

In many classrooms, the instructor provides most of the course content. With Wikis, students have an opportunity to create-together-much of the course content. Online editing service in Wiki shift students from “consumer of knowledge” to “creators of knowledge”; which is a great way to encourage students to develop critical thinking skills, to learn from one another and to improve their ability to work in groups.

Wikis are ideal for group projects that emphasize collaboration and editing. Some common uses include1) Mini research projects2) Collaborative annotated bibliographies where students add

summaries and critiques about course-related readings.3) Maintaining a collection of links where the instructor and

students can post, comment, group or classify links relevant to the course.

4) Creating e-portfolios of student work.5) Building online repository of course documents where

instructors and students can post relevant documents.

Anyone can edit Wikipedia by going to its homepage and searching for a topic on which they are knowledgable, reading through article, finding a place where they can make contribution and editing by pressing “edit this page” link at the top of the page. If they open an account, they have the ability to edit some articles that Wikipedia locks from anonymous edits.

Digital Magazine Editing

Although the world of modern magazine publishing has always been digital, it is constantly being upgraded and made more efficient. The creation of new forms of social networks have quickened the process of collaboration between editors and writers. Digital magazine editing can be done through various tools. Microsoft Word, while a simple program,is perhaps the most vital tool for editing. By using the Track changes capability, reviewers can make changes to another person’s work, which appears in red. The next user of the document will then be able to see which user has made the changes and has the option to accept or reject them. When used correctly, the function is extremely useful to editors.

These type of digital tools have had an incredible impact on editing and other aspects of magazine publishing, with both positive and negative effects. This type of professional work has become a lot less centralized and more independent, with most employees using laptops and working from home. Social networking tools have been important in allowing individuals to communicate at any time and from practically any location. In order to fully utilize digital tools, magazine publishers should constantly learn how to use themto best of their ability by improving their skill set.

CONCLUSION

People now have increasing access to new media and tools in these different settings to develop new educational materials and representations, communicate with others and make sense of complex concepts. Exploring the capabilities of new media enable to support and expand learning and literacy, however, requires a thorough understanding of how people construct, consume and learn with new media. Therefore it is important to know the importance of new technological applications like e-portfolios, Digital Magazine editing, Google Docs etc. in enhancing the educational quality.
