What’s the point?

Is that what you saw, were part of?

In what way?

If not why not?

What will YOU do differently?

Questions to keep in mind – not just now, not just at the start of your career, but until the day you retire...

Theory vs Reality...what about the curriculum?? Planning?

Organize yourselves into groups according to your practicum placement i.e. Core French together, JK/SK, gr 1 etc.

Take a look at the curriculum for your program/grade. Does it make sense? Is this what was being taught? Now you’ve been in a classroom, is it possible to teach it? Thoughts?

Oral Reading

Writing Media

On sticky notes:

•How was each strand addressed in your classroom (if you were teaching Core French, think about the classrooms you worked in, what evidence could you see)?•Was each strand given equal importance?•Was oral communication ‘front and center’?•In your own teaching how easy was it to balance oral/reading and writing?•What about media...?

Reading Assessment:

Please share with your table partners:•Your experience of completing a series of running records with a student (if you were able to – if not listen and ask questions!). •Were you able to develop an instructional plan to facilitate learning for that student? Can you describe what you did and why?•Was it effective?•Was the running record a useful tool?

Let’s share...

Please move about the room, find people who were working with the same grade level and program as you.

Share your experiences of assessing reading.

Create a list of recommendations/learnings to share with the class.

Next week you need to bring with you 2 samples of text from ‘real life’ at home...for example:

•A parking ticket (not that ANYONE here has such a thing!)•Flyer•Advert•Back of a cereal box etc etc etc

the only rule – it must contain at least some written text.
