Scottish Natural Heritage Dualchas Nàdair na h-Alba The issues On the road to restoring Scotland’s peatlands
Scottish Natural Heritage Dualchas Nàdair na h-Alba
By 2020: 50,000 hectares of degraded peatland
will have been restored.
By 2030: We will have increased this to
250,000 hectares.
By 2050: Scotland’s expanded peatlands will be
thriving habitats, sustaining a diverse
ecosystem.

Outputs - Data On the road to restoring Scotland’s peatlands
Peatland restoration is a long term endeavour. Quality data are
essential to demonstrate change and, ultimately, the success of
peatland restoration.

What we need
An robust approach to managing the flow
of data created under Peatland Action
grants and associated activities.

SNH has the right information
that can be found, trusted, shared and used
Information Management Program
Scottish Natural Heritage Dualchas Nàdair na h-Alba What are our aims On the road to restoring Scotland’s peatlands
• To promote good standard of reporting amongst our
customers
• To develop data tools for all stages of restoration projects –
from pre-application discussion to post-restoration
monitoring
• To reduce our dependency on specialist and specialist
software to input and interrogate data

Restoration activities
• Forestry felling / scrub management
• Surface stabilisation / seeding / mulching
• Reprofiling / blocking / bunding
Monitoring
• Hydrology / peat erosion / fix point photo
• Perceived changes
Data outcomes On the road to restoring Scotland’s peatlands
Site information• Grant information (restricted)
• Peat depth survey
• Vegetation quadrat
• Land use and land management
• Water body / drain / gully / track
Scottish Natural Heritage Dualchas Nàdair na h-Alba Our technical solution On the road to restoring Scotland’s peatlands
Peatland Action Spatial Data Uploader (beta version)
(from https://www.nature.scot/climate-change/taking-action/peatland-action)
• Pre-loaded projects in ARCGIS / QGIS2 format
• Shapefile and spreadsheet blank templates
• Manual drawing of new features
• Interactive editing of pre-loading features
Peatland Action Spatial manager tool
• Manage information flow between on-line temporary storage and SNH
permanent data repository
• Facilitate external mobilisation of data
1- A web-based ArcGIS online application for both external users and staff to
exchange information about Peatland Action restoration projects.
2- A gateway app to control the information flow into SNH system.
