The fi rst breath a baby takes when it is born signals the start of a new independent life. Why is breathing so important, and how does it work? In single-celled organisms and other small living things, oxygen di uses into the cell from the air or water, and carbon dioxide di uses out. But human beings are much too large, and have far too many cells, for simple di usion from the air to be enough. Breathing brings oxygen into our bodies and removes the waste carbon dioxide produced by our cells as they carry out their functions. In this chapter you will learn how your respiratory system works. Breathing is sometimes refered to as external respiration, to distinguish it from internal or cellular respiration which takes place in the cells of the body.
What the examiners say
• Generally, candidates appear familiar with most of the concepts related to this topic. However, weaker candidates are unable to accurately label diagrams of the respiratory system, and accurately defi ne important terms such as aerobic and anaerobic respiration.

Did you know? Once a baby starts breathing on its own, it is well and truly born. We carry on breathing – on average about 14 times a minute – until the day we
die.

11 Acids, bases and salts
In this chapter, you will study the following:
• acidity and alkalinity in relation to the pH scale;• acids, acid anhydrides, and characteristic reactions of non-oxidising acids;• acids in living systems;• bases, alkalis and characteristic reactions;• basic, amphoteric and neutral oxides;• salts and preparations of salts;• acidity and alkalinity of salts;• uses and dangers of salts.
This chapter coversObjectives 7.1–7.9 of Section A of the CSEC Chemistry Syllabus.
Your early studies of acids and bases might have focused on their colourful reactions with indicators, or their corrosive properties, or applications such as ‘acid rain’ or even ‘acid indigestion’.
(c)
(a) (b)
▲ Figure 11.2 Acids, bases and salts in everyday life. (a) Acid rain has damaged these trees in Scandinavia. (b) This fertiliser contains ammonium nitrate. (c) Suffering from indigestion? You may need to take an ‘antacid’, but be sure to read the instructions on the packet!
11.1 Acids and bases – what is the difference? It is easy to detect if a substance is an acid or a base by using an indicator or doing a pH test.
Indicators
Table 11.1 shows the colour changes of some common indicators. The photographs show in Figure 11.3 the colour changes with methyl orange. Generally most indicators can only be used to determine whether a solution is acidic or alkaline.
Indicators are dyes that are one colour in acidic solution and another colour in a solution of a base (that is, an alkali).

Chapter 18: Sensitivity and Coordination in Animals and Plants
Section B: Life Processes and DiseaseSection B: Life Processes and Disease
When you have completed this chapter, you will be able to:
• understand the meaning of the terms stimulus and response
• explain why response to stimuli is important for the survival of organisms
• define the terms receptor and effector
• explain the relationship between the receptor, the central nervous system and the effector
• identify the main sense organs and the stimuli to which they respond
• relate the structure of the human eye to its functions as a sense organ
• explain defects of vision and their correction
• understand the structure and functions of the human skin
• use simple flow diagrams to show the pathway along which an impulse travels in a reflex arc
• describe the functions of the main regions of the brain
• discuss the physiological, social and economic effects of drug abuse
• describe the responses of invertebrates to variations in light intensity, temperature and humidity, and how these responses can be investigated in a choice chamber
• understand the nature of the human endocrine system
• describe the role of hormones from the adrenal glands and pancreas
• describe the responses of plant stems and roots to light, touch and gravity.
In the body, ‘coordination’ means making things happen at the right time by linking up different body activities. Humans have two organ systems that do this – the nervous system and the hormone or endocrine system. Plants also show coordinated responses to stimuli.

Conditions required for chemical reactions to occur
Experiment 14.1 The effect of concentration on reaction rate: the disappearing cross
Carry out the following experiment to help you understand the effect of concentration over time.
Theory
When acid is added to sodium thiosulphate solution, a fine colloidal suspension of sulphur is formed. This suspension scatters light. Viewed through the suspension, a cross on a sheet of paper disappears when enough sulphur particles are formed (see Figure 14.11).
Figure 14.11The ‘disappearing cross’
experiment. When a given quantity of
sulphur is formed, the cross is no longer
visible ▶
Procedure
1 Using a measuring cylinder, place 50 cm3 of 0.1 mol dm–3 sodium thiosulphate into a conical flask.
2 Add 50 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm–3 sulphuric or hydrochloric acid to this solution, noting the time that you do so.
3 Place the conical flask over the cross and record the time it takes for the cross to be no longer visible when viewed from above. Discard the mixture and wash the conical flask.
4 Repeat step 3, this time using the next thiosulphate/water mixture shown in Table 14.2.
A&I
M&M
4 Identify the change to be measured as you change the manipulated variable (this is the dependent or responding variable):• The rate at which the food spoils
5 Identify how you will measure this change:• Measuring the area of mould formed in a given time period
6 Keep all other variables listed in point 1 identical during the experiment (the controlled variables):• Type of food: cheese• Amount of food: a 4 cm cube• Light: place in identical black plastic bags, etc.
