Pearl City Progress Newsletter for the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry Volume 22 Number 12 December 2013 The Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry is a catalyst for advancing our region’s economy, improving our quality of life and enhancing our members’ success GMCCI to Host Business After Hours in January For the first time in recent history, the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry will be hosting their very own Business After Hours in January. On Thursday, January 9 from 5-7 p.m., GMCCI will be inviting the entire membership to the Gallery on Second, 129 W. Second Street, in downtown Muscatine. Members will have the opportunity to mingle with other local businesses and speak with GMCCI staff. Held in the former Marie Lindsey Furniture and Interiors store, this space owned by Tom and Ann Meeker has most recently been transformed to house the “Embracing the Land” art exhibit; where guests from China and beyond have visited to see the artwork of Mr. Bai Runzhang. Runzhang’s artwork will still be showcased during this evening’s event for guests to admire. Another highlight of the evening will be what the Chamber is calling “Taste of GMCCI”. The Chamber is inviting all area member restaurants and caterers to market their business as the food providers for the evening. Those GMCCI members will be providing samples of their premiere dishes for guests to enjoy throughout the event. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our member restaurants and caterers to showcase their best offerings to the other 400 GMCCI member companies surrounded by the fabulous photo exhibit of breathtaking China landscapes by Mr. Bai Runzhang,” says Janet Morrow, Director of Community and Member Development, GMCCI. As winter approaches GMCCI realizes cold, January evenings are not always ideal for group events, but in collaborating with Gallery on Second, area restaurants and caterers, along with the historic downtown atmosphere, the goal is to provide members a networking opportunity they cannot afford to miss. Business After Hours has always been about being in a room full of potential clients, where you could talk about business in a no-pressure, relaxed setting. In the past many relationships have been formed and built into future partnerships at these events. We highly encourage all members to mark this date on their networking calendar. Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

At this time of year, we pause, give thanks and reflect on the many gifts we have in our lives. From the SCORE Chapter, we first give thanks for the many wonderful clients that we have

an opportunity to help. Their drive and dedication is amazing.

Folks who are thinking for the future – this is the heartbeat of our small and hopefully big businesses. We give thanks for the

YPN’s Member Spotlight & Annual Two Weeks of Love Campaign

and Theatre. She then moved home to Muscatine and joined YPN serving on the public relations committee. Actively involved in the community, Hannah co-chairs the Muscatine County Relay for Life, is a "Big Sister", volunteers for United Way and the Blue Zones Project.

Two Weeks of LoveYPN Muscatine, in conjunction with Two Weeks of Love, is challenging businesses to the following competition: Join area businesses, in your division, to fill as many boxes as possible for Freezin’ For Food and Toy Time. Total number of boxes will be added together to determine the winner of each division.

Each company that participates will have their name included in a Muscatine Journal story about the event. Your

company will have the opportunity to speak on the local radio station KWPC when delivering your boxes of food and toys. The winning company for each division will be listed in the Muscatine Journal.

The competition begins with Freezin’ For Food from December 2-6. Food items need to be dropped off on or before December 1 in the Hy-Vee parking lot at the Hawkeye trailer. The competition for Toy Time is from December 9-13. Toy items need to be dropped off on or before December 8 at Kreiger Motors Chevrolet location at the Hawkeye trailer. Items can be taken to the Hawkeye Hauler any day during the drive weeks, however, to ensure proper media coverage, please contact Joel Kraushaar, YPN C&PD Co-Chairperson at [email protected] or 563-299-6863.

dedicated SCORE volunteers. Besides the fact that we need more volunteers, we see folks who are willing to share of their time and experience. The knowledge is impressive.

We appreciate the staff at the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry who manage to plan, lead, organize and control a service to our fair city. We appreciate folks like Jim Elias and the Entrepreneurial Center out at Muscatine Community College. Our partnership with them will benefit those interested in “the dream.”

Finally, we give thanks to our families who support our efforts. Without our families, our lives would be shallow. As we approach the end of 2013, SCORE continues to be a team of volunteers who are most willing to share their knowledge in the spirit of others’ success. What better way to conclude 2013 and look forward to 2014.

UnityPoint Health-Trinity Muscatine Among First Muscatine Employers to Achieve Blue Zones Worksite Designation

UnityPoint Health-Trinity Muscatine has been named a designated Blue Zones Worksite ™. The designation requires employer actions to be coupled with employee participation. A recognition ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 20 in the hospital lobby.

Trinity Muscatine achieved designation by creating work environments that promote

and sustain well-being across six areas: leadership, purpose, physical environment, engagement, well-being solutions. Some of the adaptations include creating a Wellness Committee, leadership training, flexible workstations, and increased communication of wellness opportunities, offering wellness programs that support all aspects of well-being including emotional, social, financial and physical health of our employees.

“We are pleased to be one of the first workplaces in Muscatine to receive this designation,” said Jim Hayes, UnityPoint Health-Trinity Muscatine’s President and CEO. “As a healthcare organization the mission of the Blue Zones Project aligned perfectly with our mission, values and beliefs. This designation will just give us more goals to work towards as we improve not only our patient’s health but our own.”

The Blue Zones Project is based on Blue Zones principles developed by Dan Buettner and is the centerpiece of the Healthiest State Initiative to make Iowa the healthiest state by 2016 as measured by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, the first-ever daily assessment of U.S. residents' health and well-being.

Blue Zones employs evidence-based ways to help people live longer, better lives by taking a systematic, environmental approach to well-being, which focuses on optimizing policy, social networks and the built environments where people spend their time.

President’s Corner By: Greg Jenkins

We are pleased to report that Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GMCCI) has been a very busy place.

During the last week alone we enjoyed opportunities to conduct ribbon

cutting ceremonies at several new or remodeled businesses; Buffalo Wild Wings, AmericInn, Van Meter and the new Entrepreneur Center at Muscatine Community College. We are honored to be asked to support businesses in these efforts, and look forward to many more opportunities in the months ahead. We appreciate all of the investment, hard work and commitment it takes to bring these businesses to life or to make these significant changes.

We have worked hard to gain our certification as a Blues Zones certified worksite. This means we have put in place policies and practices that will help us have a healthier workplace. We are supporters of the Blue Zones initiative, and would welcome the chance to speak to our members about the steps it takes to become certified.

By now we hope you have seen our Chamber Corner in the Muscatine Journal. This effort is intended to provide exposure for our members and to communicate the efforts of GMCCI to the community. Working collaboratively with the Journal we hope to expand this offer, and bring more awareness of the great companies of the community as well as the great work of GMCCI.

We have also seen the kickoff of the Chamber Ambassador Network. These individuals have proven to be fine Ambassadors for us. They are able to speak to our members about GMCCI, and to provide us feedback from our members.

We are very happy to have this group helping us serve our customers.

We continue with our Economic Development efforts to ensure we are ready when opportunities present themselves and, when possible, make opportunities happen.

We hope this partial list of what has been taking place at GMCCI provides you an insight to the things we have been trying to accomplish. We look forward to providing even more services and support to our great community in the coming year.

For our members and our community we are staying true to our mission to be a catalyst for advancing our region's economy, improving our quality of life and enhancing our members' success. As we move into the Holiday Season we would like to encourage everyone to shop local, think global, and please have a safe and Merry Christmas.

Muscatine Heart Study Spans 40 YearsBy: Janet Morrow, Grow Muscatine

More than 40 years ago, a University of Iowa doctor and his team set in motion a groundbreaking study in Muscatine. The ongoing research that the late Dr. Ronald Lauer and his colleagues began in 1970 continues to offer valuable medical insights even today. Muscatine was a natural choice for the research team given its proximity to Iowa City and population stability.

The original aim of the study was simple: describe the distribution of established adult cardiovascular risk factors in school-aged children, and follow those risk factors into adulthood. Dr. Lauer, a professor of pediatrics and director of pediatric cardiology at The University of Iowa, had a keen interest in how childhood risk factors, genetic factors and shared family environmental factors would play into adult cardiovascular health.

Starting in 1970, Dr. Lauer reached out to the Muscatine schools and over the next 11 years, he and his team conducted 26,919 examinations of 11,377 school children. The examinations, consisting of a small blood sample for measurement of cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as blood pressure and body size measurements, were conducted every other year in the schools as the children progressed in their development. Between 1982 and 1991, the research team followed 2,547 of the school participants into adulthood and continued to track their cardiovascular health and well-being.

As medical imaging technology progressed, so did the Muscatine Heart Study. During the early 1990s, The University of Iowa was one of only ten medical centers in the country to have a computed tomographic scanner capable of identifying plaque in the vessels of the heart. A sample of 865 former school participants was invited to come to Iowa City for a CT scan in order to relate their school risk factor levels to results from the scan of their heart. Shortly thereafter, ultrasound images of their carotid arteries

(in the neck) and brachial artery (in the arm) were also obtained to investigate early evidence of cardiovascular disease. Throughout the middle to late 1990s and the 2000s this group participated in multiple examinations in Muscatine and in Iowa City. A majority of the support for these research activities was provided by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.

Data from the examinations since 1970 are now being pooled with similar data obtained from studies that began with childhood examinations in other population groups in the United States, Finland and Australia. This collaboration is called the International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohort (i3C) Consortium. The Muscatine Heart Study is currently awaiting news on a pending grant written with the other Consortium members that would enable the team to contact and conduct a telephone interview with all of the survivors from the original 11,377 school participants.

In many instances, the research team has seen their work come full circle; 719 children of some of the original participants participated in examinations between 2001 and 2008, and since 2009 examinations of 1328 Muscatine middle and high school students have been conducted and the Choosing Healthy Actions in Muscatine Public Schools (CHAMPS) program has been implemented in the middle schools with support from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust.

Ultimately, the success of the research project can be traced back to the dedication and support for medical research that was found in the people of Muscatine. The discoveries made by the program have advanced the field of cardiovascular disease study

and helped hundreds of families lead happier, healthier lives. Since 1970, more than 23,500 Muscatine residents have participated in more than 49,000 school and adult examinations, and more than 7,500 relatives of more than 1,100 families of school students have participated in family studies of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors.

In a 1970 interview with the Muscatine Journal, Dr. Lauer had hoped that the study would “allow the earliest recognition of Atheromatous disease and thus give [the children] the earliest benefit of dietary and drug therapy.” After 40 years, it should be safe to say that his work has done that and much more.

2013 Miss Muscatine, Isabella Blaine, Thanks the Community

As my reign as Miss Muscatine comes to an end, I want to thank the Muscatine Community for all their love and support. It has been a true blessing to get to know Muscatine and all it has to offer. Although I am not from Muscatine, I feel as though I was able to reach many individuals and now consider Muscatine my second home. I will continue to visit frequently even after I have passed my title on to the next lucky young lady.

I would like to extend a special thank you to the Vintage Sound 93.1 FM radio station: Thank you Jamie and Tony for allowing me to share my story of hope on your station and playing my PSA spreading awareness of the dangers of an eating disorder. You have helped my dreams become a reality.

To the Clarion Hotel, for making my visits possible and extremely pleasant and although I was thrilled to hear a new Starbucks was about to make its way into the community, I still found myself at Elly's Tea & Coffee House long after it opened. Thank you Elly and staff for all the kindness you showed me and the extreme amounts of coffee you made me to help me through my busy days!

I will never forget the day I spent with Mayor Hopkins at the Muscatine Day on the Hill at the Capitol Building back in January, not to mention the day he called into the radio station while I was on the air with Jamie. Thank you Mayor Hopkins for accepting me into the community and making me feel right at home. Your generosity and kindness mean more than you know.

To Representative Mark Lofgren and his lovely wife: Thank you for allowing me to join you in the House of Representatives and constantly reaching out to

me to ensure I had everything I needed to succeed during my reign. I am forever grateful.

And lastly, I would love to thank my Miss Muscatine board members. You have impacted my life in ways I could not have imagined. The limits and barriers I once set have now been broken. Thank you for always believing in me and making this year unforgettable. Again, it has been an extreme blessing to be your Miss Muscatine this year. Thank you for this opportunity!

God Bless,Isabella
