Muscatine Foods To Reinvest In MuscatineMuscatine Foods Corporation and Bridgestone Americas, Inc. (BSAM) recently announced the planned sale of the Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions (BBTS) office building located on the corner of Highway 61 and 38 to Muscatine Foods Corporation (MFC). The parties disclosed that they have entered into a sale agreement and anticipate a closing within ninety days. Terms of the pending transaction were not disclosed.

“We have been experiencing growth and last year relocated the headquarters of several of our business units to Muscatine. Our challenge is that we have run out

of space; our current office space is not sufficient to support our business needs today and for the future. We feel very good about continuing to invest in Muscatine,” said Gage A. Kent, CEO and Chairman of the Board of MFC. MFC and its subsidiaries will office at both the new location and at its facilities on Oregon Street. MFC has had a presence in Muscatine since 1936; with businesses started by Gage A. Kent, grandfather of the current CEO and CHB.

“MFC and the Kent Family have been contributors to the greater Muscatine communities for generations. They not only have provided significant resources to community betterment over the years, but have continued to be a very strong employer and advocate for Muscatine,” said Bill Phelan, President & CEO Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry. “Our community has benefited from their employees living in Muscatine and volunteering in every area of community life.”

Kurt Danielson, President, BBTS commented, “BBTS is very pleased to work with Muscatine Foods towards a seamless transition of office space. BBTS current staff will relocate to other facilities in town, including the Bridgestone Bandag Learning Center. BBTS continues to be part of the community, with approximately 220 BBTS teammates based in Muscatine.”

Grow Your Business with GMCCI and SCORE

Now is an excellent time to review strategies for growning your business.SCORE has the answers for your small business.

Q: How often should an entrepreneur review and update his/her business plan, and what areas should be watched most closely?

A: Conduct a regular annual review. This doesn’t need to be overly extensive - look for changes in your target market, areas that may need to be reprioritized, and ways to improve the efficiency of your operations.

Every 3-5 years is when you do a more comprehensive review, and look for ways to really move the needle.

Finally, review your plan after a major shift in your industry or other critical event. We had to do this when the retail publishing market - the core of our business at the time - suddenly declined in 2008. Everyone in The Planning Shop was involved with offering and critiquing

ideas. That effort is why we’re still here and thriving.

Q: Why should every small business owner, even those that are doing quite well, commit to short- and long-term planning?

A: Planning gets you out of “reactive mode”. Many small business owners think the path to success is doing one thing, then doing more of it. If the market falls off, your instinct is to make more sales. But you can’t make sales if there’s no market to sell to. That’s why you need to continually be aware of things that can affect your business - both threats and opportunities.

Q: What is the key to designing jobs and responsibilities that will best meet the needs of your business?

A: Make a list of your needs and priorities and see which ones can be grouped together. A common mistake is to have one person do multiple things that actually require differing skill sets and personality

types. By having a clear idea of what you want the person to do, you’re more likely to attract applicants who fit those needs. And you may find the best answer is to go with part-time employees or consultants.

Q: What is the most valuable insight a SCORE small business mentor can offer to an entrepreneur as he/she develops their business?

A: A SCORE mentor fills an important role as supporter and encourager. People often doubt what they can learn and do. You need someone who can provide expert guidance, and show that success is possible if you choose the right business, critically evaluate the competition, plan carefully, and follow good business management practices.

Plan for success with a SCORE mentor. Ask a SCORE mentor your questions online at www.SCORE.org or meet in-person at 102 Walnut Street. To make an appointment call GMCCI at 563.263.8895.

  • Organizations today more than ever need to become “grant ready” if they want to find the right grants to meet the goals of their mission. This six-day, 48-hour format provides a concentrated focus with time between sessions for reflection and implementation in your organization. This program will equip your organization to find the right grants, then provide you with critical skills and techniques to successfully seek, write, manage and evaluate them. Topics of discussion include:

developing a sustainable grants strategy to be a creative, successful and competitive grant seeker

finding and evaluating grant making organizations (government, corporation, foundations, etc.) who want to make an “investment” in your mission

designing successful grant proposals which deliver measurable, sustainable results

telling the story through effective mission, goals, and objectives

budgeting effectively to add value and creditability

putting it all together and making a strong case—interpreting the Request for Proposal (RFP), writing persuasive narrative, organizing and formatting the application, engaging stakeholder support, effective presentation making, etc.

facilitator Lance Noe, Director of the Drake University Center for Professional Studies, will facilitate the session. Lance teaches grant writing for the Drake University Master of Public Administration program at the Des Moines, Ames and Quad Cities locations. He also is the grant writing instructor for the nationally accredited Certified Public Management program. Lance has spoken at numerous regional conferences and professional meetings bringing a message of how to best develop a sustainable grant seeking and grant writing organization. Since 2006, he has worked as a consultant to several state and local government agencies, leading them through a comprehensive process of developing a sustainable grants strategy. Most recently he wrote the State of Iowa’s application to the Teacher Quality Partnership Grants Program—a major federal grant which was awarded in 2010 following a highly competitive review process.
