A PROFILE
The Indian Association of Secretaries and Administrative Professionals, formerly known as NationalI

Registration Act 1980. IASAP was founded in Mumbai in 1970 and subsequently has had Regional
Chapters come up allover the country–at Kolkata, Chennai, New Delhi, Pune, Bangalore and
Hyderabad. The total All India membership strength is about 2000. IASAP is affiliated to the
Association of Secretaries in Asia (ASA), a federation of Secretarial Organizations at the national level

• Members volunteer annually for charity work ranging from contributions towards education of
the girl child, visiting old age homes, visiting orphanages, donating clothes to charity etc.
The National Convention of Secretaries in India is organized by one of the Chapters by rotation. The
participating Chapters are Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Mumbai,
Headquarters. The Delhi Chapter was the host of the 4th All India Congress in February 1995.It
celebrated its Silver Jubilee from 14th to 18th September 2011, when it hosted the Bi-Annual
12thAll-India National Convention, which was attended by 250 delegates from all the IASAP Chapters
in India. The theme for the All India Convention was“From Silver to Gold – The Challenge of
Change”.
The 14th Convention was hosted by Hyderabad Chapter from 19th to 23rd September 2015, at Hotel
AVASA, Hyderabad. This year’s theme was “Divas of Change”. Ms Tawleen Kaur Malhotra from
Delhi Chapter was the 2nd Runners Up in a highly charged Contest, which culminated with the most
exciting Extempore Round.
The 15th National Convention will be hosted by Mumbai Head Quarters from 29th September to
2nd October 2017 at Taj Santa Cruz. The theme is “Excellence Beyond Boundaries”.
The National Convention is followed by the Asian Secretaries Association (ASA) Congress, which
meets once in two years in different member countries. At the ASA Congress, an All-Asia Secretary of
the Year Contest is also held where winners of the fifteen PSA countries, including Thailand,
Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka,
New Zealand, India, Bangladesh and Brunei, compete for the title. The All India Winner of the SAP
Contest represents India at the Asian level, where in the last few years, our national level winners
have won the title five out of seven times. Delhi Chapter has the distinction of claiming the coveted
title of the ASA Award twice; in 1996 by Ms. Aarti Gupta and in 2002 by Ms. Madhu Rajesh. The
title in 2010 was won at Taiwan by Ms Firoza Driverfrom Mumbai.
The 23rd ASA Congress was held from 25th to 29th September 2016 in Manila, Phillippines. The
theme was “Today’s Vision Tomorrow’s Reality”.
Dear Members,
This Pearl Anniversary of the Delhi Chapter is not just a day of
celebrations, but also an occasion to reflect on the journey we have
made, the milestones we have achieved and the hurdles we have
overcome. It is also an occasion to acknowledge the achievements,
contributions, hard work and struggles of our predecessors who have
tirelessly contributed to a cause. It is perhaps, also the most
appropriate moment to look forward with a vision, with a resolve to
keep going and leave things better than they already are.
I thank all our past Chairpersons for their extraordinary organizational
skills and perseverance to take this Association forward. Also, I am grateful to all the committee
members, who have worked hard, often behind the scenes, to successfully organize a wide range of
events, workshops and training programs. Last but not the least; I want to thank each and every
member of this prestigious Association for their consistent and continued support and positive
guidance.
To be honest, a feeling of immense pride and privilege engulfs me to be entrusted with the
responsibility of being the Chairperson of this Association at a time coinciding with the celebration of
this momentous occasion, an Association which provides ample opportunities to all of us to grow
professionally. I must confess that personally this opportunity has enhanced my confidence
manifold. I am especially grateful to all members for reposing their faith in me to serve this
Association in whatever way that I humbly can.
Perhaps to some, it may not appear as significant an occasion as the Silver Jubilee or Golden Jubilee
of any organization, nevertheless, we take it as a landmark in the history of the Delhi Chapter and
consequently in the history of IASAP and as an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy 30 years of being
together - albeit with a little bit of a struggle to keep the flag of this Association flying high due to
several setbacks and a couple of seemingly unsurmountable situations. However, we are still thriving
and perhaps growing stronger. This in itself speaks volumes about our resilience, endurance and
our will to survive to sustain the grandeur of this Association. And that majorly calls for celebration.
On this momentous occasion of successfully completing thirty glorious years, I wish each and every
member of IASAP Delhi Chapter a great journey of self-development, growth and satisfying
professional endeavors ahead. God Bless !
My best wishes to one and all.

The Pearl Anniversary marks the culmination of 30 purposeful years of engagement, mutual

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT EMERITUS - HOMAI H. MEHTA
My hearty congratulations to Vandana Kalsi and her Team, the First Chairperson of Delhi Chapter,
Alka Narang, all the Past Chairpersons and their Teams on the significant milestone of 30 years of the
Delhi Chapter. After Chennai in 1983, Kolkata in 1985, Delhi is IASAP’s third Chapter and was
inaugurated in 1986. Mumbai, HQs will complete 50 Golden Years in 2020!
Your Pearl Anniversary is a momentous occasion which calls for celebration, also Reflection. Thirty
years ago, we had a select membership base of secretaries/stenographers. Today’s new cult
administrative professionals have a different profile. They play a vital role in facilitating the flow of
information and communication. In addition to using fast-paced technology, they also contribute to
work teams, lead projects and add value to their companies.
Change requires new ways of looking at the future. IASAP leadership both at HQs and Chapters
requires new ways of motivating and attracting millennial administrative professionals to enroll in
IASAP, participate and contribute to workplace excellence and social progress. Together, let us
commit ourselves to make this happen!
With best wishes to one and all of you.
Homai H. Mehta
My dear IASA Pians of Delhi Chapter,

in India and overseas. We at Headquarters are very proud and happy
and along with other Chapters across India share in your celebrations;

you in spirit and share in your success.
Since I joined the Governing Council a few years ago I have been interacting with Anita Khosla,

MESSAGE FROM SHARON PIRES, CHAIRPERSON - MUMBAI H.Q. AND ALL INDIA PRESIDENT - IASAP
In November 1986, as the All-India President of IASAP (which was
then known as NIPS), it was a great pleasure for me to inaugurate the
Delhi Chapter, which I established with the help of Governing Council
member Pansy Reilly. I am extremely grateful to Mr. Ajit Kerkar, who
was then Managing Director of the Taj Group of Hotels, for helping
Pansy and me to coordinate with the Taj Palace Hotel in Delhi, to set
up this Chapter.
The Delhi Chapter is the 3rd Chapter of IASAP and Alka Narang, who
was then Executive Assistant to Mr. Ajit Kerkar, was appointed as the
1st Chairperson of this Chapter.
On the morning of the Inauguration Day, when I stepped into the
lobby of Taj Palace Hotel, I was thrilled to see Zelma Lazarus (Founder President of NIPS), who was
there for company work. I immediately requested her to attend the Inaugural event that evening
and to say a few words to the gathering, and she gracefully agreed.
And from November 1986 onwards, the Delhi Chapter has taken giant strides forward. I wish this
Chapter great success in the years to come and wish all the Chapter members a very happy Pearl
Anniversary.
Warm regards and all good wishes to the members of the Delhi Chapter.

Thirty years. Already?!!Wow, how time flies!
Your email announcing the Pearl Anniversary and invitation to join in
the celebration was heartwarming, indeed! Thank you for including me
in your mailing list even though I am living in Belgium for which reason
of course, I will not be able to participate in this wonderful milestone
celebration on the 26th November. However, I send you and all IASAP
members 'Hearty Congratulations' on this glorious occasion.
I'm sure that in the intervening years since I was Chairperson of NIPS (as
it was known then), the Delhi Chapter has made huge strides and its
membership is as strong as ever. IASAP provides a unique platform for
like-minded individuals with wide ranging experience to come together to share, imbibe and
strengthen one's own and others' capabilities in order to cope with the ever increasing changes in
the work environment.
I enjoyed being a member of NIPS and subsequently my tenure as Chairperson whilst working with
Philips India all those years ago. My challenge in NIPS then, with the help of my committee members,
was to organize activities that were interesting, fun and varied enough to motivate members'
attendance. It was hugely gratifying when several members showed up and enjoyed the planned
events. So much was achieved collectively as a team and personally too. It was a time for overcoming
challenges with creative thinking, hard work and successful achievement of set goals. For me (I'm
sure for others too), that was a golden era. Oh, how I missed it all when I left India to join the UN
international work arena!
There was an upside though, because the skills and wide ranging experience garnered from years
spent with NIPS and Philips, served me well when executing challenging assignments in the UN,
which was situated in war-torn countries.
I certainly recall my 'NIPS' experience with immense satisfaction and gratitude for what I learned and
achieved. I'm sure other members too feel the same way about the knowledge, skills and
experiences gained through their association with NIPS/IASAP that would have benefited them not
just professionally, but in their personal lives as well. Long may it continue!
Best wishes for a great Pearl Anniversary celebration.
With warm regards,
Ailsa
MESSAGE FROM AILSA SMITH CHAIRPERSON - DELHI CHAPTER (1993-94)
It was in 1972 that I heard about an organization of Secretaries called
the ‘National Institute of Professional Secretaries’ in Mumbai. I
decided to join as the Membership fee was only Rs.5 – my receipt was
signed by the then Secretary, Mrs. Homai Mehta!I was thrilled as this
was my first contact with a ‘Secretaries Association’. However, since
they were quite far away I somehow lost touch and after 2 years did not
renew my membership.
In October 1995, after a 28 year stint with ICI India, I joined The Oberoi
Group to work with their newly appointed President, Mr Ravi
Bhoothalingam. It was he who re-introduced me to NIPS and I came to
know that a Chapter had been started in Delhi. I met some of the
Managing Committee Members and by the end of 1996, in October or so, I re-registered as a
Member. In less than 2 months I was asked to join the Managing Committee! I had no clue as to how
the Committee functioned but caught on to the ropes pretty fast and before I knew what - by the time
their AGM was held in May 1997 – I was appointed Chairperson!
That was the beginning of three memorable years of my journey as Chairperson – some very
interesting things happened during this time – I got the full support of not only my boss Mr.
Bhoothalingam, but also of Mr. PRS Oberoi himself. He agreed to fully sponsor the “Secretary of the
Year Contest” at The Oberoi Hotel in 1998. The event was a grand success. Ms. Kanwal Sibal, the then
Egyptian Ambassador to India was our Chief Guest that year and the event was attended by more
than 200 guests -members with their families - as well as other dignitaries. I accompanied the Winner
to Sri Lanka for the ASA Convention and Contest – another great experience!
The Monthly events were just as motivating with distinguished speakers such as Field Marshall Sam
Manekshaw & Dr. Kiran Bedi. We had various workshops that were conducted by HR Gurus. For
three consecutive years I was invited by the YWCA to give the Key Note Address in my capacity as the
chairperson of IASAP Delhi and to present the ‘Poonam Rajput Award for the Best Secretary Student’.
Mrs Poonam Rajput was a Past-Chairperson, who had passed away tragically and NIPS had instituted
an Award in her memory.
Before I knew it, it was already time for the next “Secretary of the Year” Contest in 2000 – this time at
the Park Hotel in Connaught Place – with the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Smt. Vasundhra Raje
Scindia, as the Chief Guest. Again, an immensely satisfying event!
Apart from these events, one experience in 1999 will always stand out as especially satisfying. The
Ministry of Labour, while restructuring their Syllabus for the Millennium in all the subjects like
Tailoring, Secretarial course, Sports, and Carpentry etc. approached me to write a paper suggesting
what should be included in the Secretarial Syllabus.I submitted a paper which was discussed by the
MESSAGE FROM VEERA .F. MAVALWALA CHAIRPERSON- DELHI CHAPTER (1997 – 2000)
Principals of the 10 Vocational Schools at the State level. They accepted my recommendations and
asked me to make a Presentation at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi. This was a proud moment for me as NIPS
got due recognition, and for the first time a “Secretary” was actually projecting a presentation before
an august audience. Subsequently, I was informed by the Secretary, Ministry of Labour, that all my
recommendations had been incorporated in their Syllabus of the Millennium – primarily, that all
students should be given training in shorthand and how to work with computers.
The icing on the cake was when one day Mr Ravi Bhoothalingam returned from a CII Conference and
said – “Today when I was introduced to the Secretary, Ministry of Labour – he said, Oh you are Veera
Mavalwala’s boss!”. I was happy that I could make a small contribution to the future Secretaries in
this country!
I remained on the Advisory Committee of the Delhi Chapter till May 2016 and I enjoy being a part of
all the activities and to contribute my time and effort to an organization that is so dear to me. I would
like to thank Members of my erstwhile Managing Committee, who helped me to revive the Delhi
Chapter in 2011and to successfully hold the National Convention within a period of 6 months with
the help of the Chairperson, Meenakshi Dhanda. I also take this opportunity to thank Mr. Ravi
Bhoothalingam and all my well-wishers who have always supported me in all my endeavours. Last
but not least I thank Farokh, my husband, who has patiently waited for me for long hours while I was
away doing NIPS & IASAP work and who must have packed over a thousand gifts for all our events!
I wish IASAP Delhi Chapter and the Managing Committee all the very best in the future and may the
Delhi flag always fly high and soar to greater heights!

Dear Vandana & Team Members, Past Chairpersons and my dear
Fellow Members of IASAP,
As we embark on celebrating our Pearl Anniversary, it is indeed a
momentous occasion for each one of us who has contributed to the
growth of the Delhi Chapter, such that we are now going to exuberantly
celebrate all its successes on turning 30.
The Delhi Chapter of IASAP was inaugurated in November 1986. I have
been with the erstwhile NIPS since April 1987 and hence associated
with the Delhi Chapter when it was just finding its feet with only a
handful of Secretaries. Today our membership has increased manifold
and I can proudly “hum” that we are doing well to be recognized within Delhi and NCR.
I recall my association with NIPS with a lot of pride and nostalgia. We were but a small group of
professional women, who were learning and growing through our association with each other and
collectively through NIPS. I was extremely honoured to take charge as Chapter Chairperson in the
year 2000. Being at the helm when NIPS (National Institute of Personal Secretaries) changed its name
to IASAP (Indian Institute of Secretaries & Professional Secretaries) in April 2003 was indeed
momentous.
Our Association is known for its Learning and Networking by way of regular meetings, outstation
workshops, visiting with people in old age homes and other such activities for a good social cause. I
am thankful to have been Chairperson of a very dedicated and cooperative group of resourceful
ladies who helped me put these events together for the Delhi Chapter. I have monitored my personal
growth by involving and educating myself in all the activities of IASAP such as educative Training
Sessions, and Outstation Workshops. I have attended 10 National Conventions and also participated
at the ASA Congress in Taiwan in 2010. Each National Convention or International Congress has had
its own learning which implied better performance and better understanding to our profession.
Regular Benchmarking of Secretarial acumen is done every alternate year by hosting and holding by
turns the SOTYC (Secretary of the Year Contest) on a National Level and then at the International
Level. Delhi has won this Prestigious Title twice at the All Asian Level at ASA (Asian Secretaries
Association). Madhu Rajesh won in 2002 at Brunei and I can proudly attribute this credit to the
Delhi Chapter under my Leadership.
It has been an uphill task to reach this far but each Chairperson, past or present, with their ever
enthusiastic contributing Committee members have paved the way for IASAP to reach the ladder of
success and we stand tall today!!
All my good wishes and continued support to the Delhi Chapter.
MESSAGE FROM ANJANA JACOB CHAIRPERSON– DELHI CHAPTER (2000 – 2003)
Greetings to the present Chairperson, Committee Members and all
the members of Delhi Chapter!
On the occasion of Pearl Anniversary of the Delhi Chapter, I
congratulate all the Past Chairpersons and their teams as well as the
present Chairperson and team for their contribution to bring Delhi
Chapter through a remarkable journey to this stage of celebration.
I have always believed that if we have an inclination to change our
vision, the world will appear accordingly. Instead of trying to shape
the world, let us shape ourselves first!
I took over as the Chairperson with this “Can Do” attitude as I could
see lot of challenges ahead. The changing role of secretarial profession, shifting of corporates to
NCRs and modernization of office technologies brought a lot of challenges to the secretarial
profession. By God’s grace I had the “bestest” of team to stand by me and help me face these
challenges, It is their unstinted support which helped me keep Delhi Chapter flag soaring.
We believed that “Keeping the morale up during challenging times is vital for survival” and I am glad
that my team had the will power and resolution to keep its morale up during the tough times. Even
today, these challenges persist and I am confident that the hard work and commitment of the
present committee will see the Delhi Chapter sail through and give the required boost to the
association. I am sure you all will endure through this phase but sweet Success will be your reward.
IASAP is our association and as a member, it is the responsibility of each and every member to join
hands to run the association in these trying times. It is not necessary to micromanage, but it is
essential to understand and engage ourselves more with the activities of the association.
All the best and Cheers to the wonderful team!!
“You’re no good unless you are a good assistant; and if you are,
you’re too good to be an assistant.”

MESSAGE FROM KAVITA BHATIA CHAIRPERSON- DELHI CHAPTER (2006 TO 2010)
LATE MRS. POONAM RAJPUTCHAIRPERSON – DELHI CHAPTER (1990-92)
Poonam Rajput, who had been actively involved with NIPS (erstwhile IASAP), Delhi Chapter since
1989 and who had been Chairperson from 1990-92, passed away tragically on December 12, 1994
while still on the Managing Committee as Ex-Officio. Besides being a good and warm human being,
she was an exemplary Secretary. At NIPS she devoted long hours to make the Association a viable
proposition and kept it going when the spirits of many began to flag.
In 1995, the Managing Committee decided to institute a scholarship in her memory to be given to the
best student of YWCA.
The first scholarship was handed over to Radhika Sondhi (who had been identified by the YWCA as
the best all round and deserving student) at the Annual Convocation of the Women’s Training
Institute on 11th November, 1995. However, for various reasons, the Scholarship was discontinued
after a few years.
OBITUARYANITA SETH
Anita Seth, one of our prominent and valuable members, left for her heavenly abode on 29th April
2016 at the age of 64 after battling blood cancer.
A warm and genuine person, she remained brave even during her last days, firmly believing that she
would improve and resume her official duties. Not once did she complain that she felt pain or
weakness, nor did her voice falter to convey that she feared the unknown. The strength in her voice
sustained until the very end. Her support meant a lot to IASAP. She was always a keen participant in
all of IASAP events, bringing much needed support through her enthusiastic participation in events
and through her quiet and graceful presence.
We will miss you Anita Seth. May your soul rest in peace.

A FEW HABITS OF LIKEABLE PEOPLE
Why do we become restless when alone?
How to become restful in solitude?
How should I shield myself from the behavior of those around me?
Why should I work hard to be good when those who are not are having a great time?
We are told we should forgive. When I do that, the other person benefits but I am called a
doormat.
We are restless with ourselves because the self we know is empty, shallow and void and unhappy.
Face this fact. We try to be busy because we want to avoid our inner void. When you are alone, you
tend to feel fear, anger, disappointment and insecurity. And when you think only of yourself, you
become greedy. So learn to heal your inner hurts, handle your greed wisely, you will be at peace.
More than the experience it is how you frame the experience which matters. We tend to frame an
experience with hurt and expectation. First experience the experience of the other. Then learn from
that, including from good and bad people. When you meet negative people, learn more deeply. See
how their psychology is working. See how they are a victim of their habits; how they are ignorant and
insensitive to live a positive life. Perhaps they have wrong role models. Learn from the mistakes of
others. That is your great challenge. You can withstand the turbulence if you can learn from others
and deal with them in a way that you see it as a challenge and not as a nuisance.
Look deeply and you will realize that people who do wrong also suffer. An underworld person may
appear strong but he goes through a lot of fear and tension. He has to be alert all the time or he may
get killed. This in itself is a kind of punishment. Whether a criminal gets caught or not, he has to be
manipulative and doubt every person and this involve slot of psychological stress. Look at
punishment from a bigger perceptive. Nature has its own way of punishing and rewarding.
Forgiving is also good to the one who forgives. Because the moment you forgive, you let go of the
injustice done to you. To nurse a hurt is self-damaging. When I forgive, I become stronger for I am no
longer a victim and so there is no longer pain. How can I be a doormat if I have kept myself clean
through forgiveness? Forgiveness is like taking a psychological bath, it keeps you fresh.

The MC Team (2016-17)
A Secretary is defined as an Executive Assistant who possesses a mastery of office skills,
demonstrates the ability to assume responsibility without direction or supervision,
exercises initiative and judgement, and makes decisions within the scope of assigned
authority. An effective Secretary is a role model and thus sets the standard in time and work
organization.
