2. Admissions Policy

The University of Tokyo’s Programs in English at Komaba (PEAK) seeks to admit a select number of students who exhibit the potential for intellectual growth and leadership, and can contribute to the diversification of the campus with their cultural and educational backgrounds, in line with the university’s initiative to establish a global campus and nurture global leaders.

PEAK consists of the “International Program on Japan in East Asia” and the “International Program on Environmental Sciences.” The aim of these undergraduate degree programs is to share the rich intellectual and educational resources of the university with the wider global community. The classes will be taught in English, but students will also have an opportunity to learn the Japanese language during their studies.

Students in the “Japan in East Asia” program will gain an international and interdisciplinary understanding of East Asia’s past, present and future with a particular focus on Japan. The program encourages students to develop skills and knowledge in order to foster constructive dialogue within East Asia and around the world. Students are expected to actively engage with the educational and cultural environment at the university.

Students accepted to the “Environmental Sciences” program will study this complex multidisciplinary subject from many different viewpoints including environmental and economic policy, ethics and jurisprudence. They will also learn about biodiversity conservation, geochemical cycling, geophysics and the latest environmental technologies from an advanced science and engineering perspective. The primary aim of the program is to nurture well-rounded environmental specialists who can design and implement integrated approaches to current and future environmental issues.

3. Eligibility

3.1 Please read the following eligibility requirement.

Students are eligible to apply for PEAK as long as they satisfy Requirement 1 and ONE of the requirements in Requirement 2 at the time of enrollment on October 1, 2013. If you are unsure about your eligibility, be sure to contact the PEAK Undergraduate Admissions Office as early as possible.

Requirement 1

The applicant must have spent at least 5 of the first 6 school years and at least 5 of the second 6 school years studying in a language other than Japanese. For each of the five school years, the vast majority of courses must have been delivered in a language other than Japanese.

  4

This requirement is summarized in the following diagram.

Requirement 2 (The applicant must fulfill at least ONE of the following requirements.)

(a) The applicant must have completed all the requirements of a 12 school year education system consisting of primary and secondary education. Those who have or will be graduating from a Japanese institution should have completed or plan to complete the standard 12 school year school curriculum at a Japanese high school certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology or at a special school for international students certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.

Those who have attended schools in Japan not certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, must contact the university between September 18, 2012, and October 12, 2012, to have their eligibility reviewed by the Individual Admission Review Process of the University of Tokyo. (However, it must be noted that only those who are eighteen or older at the time of entry to the university can have their eligibility reviewed.) For further details, contact our Admissions Office through the web enquiry form available from PEAK website (http://peak.c.u-tokyo.ac.jp). Make sure to include the names of the school(s) you attended after nursery school/kindergarten and their location(s) as well as period attended (yyyy-mm).
