Welcome ToPeach Days 2013!

Welcome to our 15th annual “Peach Days: A Celebration of our Heritage”. In 1999 when we first started our “new” Peach Days, there were skeptics that thought the community would not back this event. But they were pleasantly surprised! It was a hit from the beginning, and has continued to grow and become a favorite of people all over the county. Today we have returning world-wide visitors! Peach Days had been a part of Hurricane almost from its beginning when it started as the “Fruit Festival” and a way to market the valley fruit. It soon took on the name of “Peach Days” and eventually the County asked Hurricane to make Peach Days the Washington County Fair. When the fair outgrew little Hurricane and the county moved the fair to the new Regional Park, Hurricane missed their community celebration. Soon plans were made for a new Peach Days. The first year was an incredible hit. The crowds were large, the participation inspiring, and the skeptics silenced! Fifteen years later we are grateful for the participation and enjoyment the community gives this fun filled weekend. We are happy as a committee to see this annual event so well loved. Its permanent home at the Community Center brings fond memories of the days when it was the Hurricane

Elementary with the old High School across the street. There is something for all ages at Peach Days. We hope you will come and enjoy the displays and food or commercial booths, wander through the Pioneer Corner, gather candy at the best parade in the county, and enjoy the amazing local entertainment throughout this two day event. New this year will be a “Hurricane’s Got Talent” contest and a Pickleball Tournament. As always there is the Peach Days Rodeo, Movie in the Park, Peach Cook-off, or Candy Cannon. Food contests, Quilt Show or Camp, and kids’ activities also guarantee fun for all the family. You can have a good time without spending a dime, or bring a few dollars and add to the enjoyment. We are so thrilled to have you once again join us at what has become the biggest event in the Hurricane Valley. Come and visit with old friends, make some new ones, stroll down the lane of nostalgia, and be a part of our Peach Days Celebration! See you there!

Mayor Tom Hirschi to retire afterthree terms as mayor and

one term as city councilman.

The picture is indicative of why Mayor Hirschi has held his leadership position so long and why he could no doubt continue to hold it in the future. Working in his small-town barbershop, he has been accessible as well as open to the voicing of citizens’ concerns to a remarkable degree quite possibly unmatched by any mayor in the past and one that will likely be unequaled in the future. He has spoiled us in that regard. Most astonishingly, there is no known example of him nicking a customer’s hair because his hand shook as the result of a citizen’s tirade. The picture also hints at another value that has been in the background of every decision Tom has made; his goal for Hurricane, in spite of the pressures of necessary growth, to maintain the small town values and atmosphere which is such a valued part of the community’s tradition.

Tom grew up in Hurricane and was notable in his youth by how he kept school officials and law enforcement officers on their toes. He married Kaye Wright also from Hurricane. Tom gives Kaye most of the credit for the children growing up to be good productive citizens as well as crediting her with the fact that he has also been a productive citizen and active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Tragically, Kaye died February 20, 2000 and Tom has since married Kitty Peyton Campbell.

Upon moving back to Hurricane now a trained barber, Tom threw himself into service activities such as organizing and making successes of Little League Football Little League Baseball, and Hurricane Peach Day. He has served as chairman of both the County Fair and of Peach Day. He has at times been, coach, announcer, member and/or chairman of community planning boards and has taken an active role in Republican Party politics. Service has been a way of life.

Hurricane’s population has nearly doubled since Tom first took office and he has been part of many important decisions aimed at maintaining growth patterns to the benefit of all. Another extremely important role has been to assess potential new businesses as to their community asset, to welcome desirable ones so that they aren’t lured elsewhere and then to make certain they are successfully launched. An eyewitness to many of the initial meetings testifies to Tom’s effectiveness using the initial meeting with Orgil, Inc. as an example. He wrote:

The conversation with Tom was mostly a “feel good” discussion about the Valley and why the company would be welcomed and happy if they located there. It wasn’t long before duty called Tom back to either the school bus or the barbershop – I don’t recall which. After Tom left, the company officials made a number of complimentary comments about “the mayor” and how comfortable they would be in his town. Throughout that day, the evening meal and even into the next day, the company representatives made comments about wanting to be in Tom’s town. He made quite the impression on them and that meeting was a major contributing factor in the

company locating in Hurricane.

As indicated, Tom has grappled with the question of how to maintain small-town qualities in the face of urban and industrial growth. A major opportunity to help achieve this goal emerged when the city was able to acquire eight acres of downtown property from the school district. Tom has led the way in planning for facilities that will foster a unifying spirit in the community as well as searching for ways to fund these projects

The vast majority of citizens will agree that Hurricane is much better off because of Tom’s years of service in the City’s behalf.

Peach Days History This Labor Day weekend, August 30 and 31, will be the 15th annual celebration of Peach Days. However, Peach Days really began a long time ago. It is an integral part of Hurricane’s history. What began as a Fruit Festival in 1909 would evolve into the Peach Days and eventually the Washington County Fair. When the infamous Hurricane Canal began to flow the life blood of the valley – water – the farmers were able to begin planting. Water was available as early as 1906, but not until 1908 did it reach the South Fields. Several thousand Elberta peach trees were purchased and planted by the valley’s newly formed “commercial club” in 1908. They battled many hungry rabbits as they nurtured these baby trees along. Frank Barber, an experienced nursery man from Centerville, Utah came to Hurricane in January 1907 and began cracking peach pits which he planted in the spring. He organized the Hurricane Nursery Company (later the Dixie Fruit and Produce Company). Barber became involved in the commercial club and as the vice president organized the first “Fruit Festival”. This was held in 1909 in the Social Hall. The townspeople came and displayed the best fruits they had raised: Elberta peaches, grapes, and melons. The produce was judged and then those attending the “Fruit Festival” all helped eat the scrumptious display. The second year (1910) the Festival expanded and invited outsiders to share in Hurricane’s wealth. The Hurricane

residents and guests shared a meal, then moved to the Social Hall to view the fruit displays. It was described in the county news as fruit with “an extra superior quality”, and that “finer peaches were never seen anywhere”. Equal praise was given to the grapes, melons and other fruits (except for the apples which were a little wormy). After the judging and prizes, the crowd once again ate the delicious fruits. The day’s festivities were rounded off with a baseball game and a dance at the town square (now Heritage Park and Hurricane Community Center). From these humble beginnings the fruit festival grew into a two day event with roping contests, foot races, horse races, bronco riding, steer wrestling, baseball, dancing parties and cantatas. The fruit was still the center of the event and on the afternoon of the second day the melons were cut and everyone ate the fruit display. The Fruit Festival became the Hurricane Peach Days. The first Peach Days was held July 20, 1911. It was originally

called Elberta Days, and in 1915 the name was changed to Peach Days. Exciting things happened at Peach Days, like in 1916 when Mr. Fox brought his automobile to the celebration and charged 10 cents for a ride from the north end of Main Street to the flour mill and back! In 1929 Hurricane’s Peach Days had livestock and poultry exhibits, agricultural and horticultural displays, and various entertainments. It had achieved county fair status. At this time the county wanted to hold this fair annually and alternate among the towns of the county. The suggestion to hold it in St. George the next year was made, but the 1930 festival was again in Hurricane, and there it was to remain. In 1951 the name was changed to the Washington County Fair. County commissioners asked Hurricane to make this the county fair celebration because of its great success. The fair grew bigger and bigger. By the 1970s seed displays and agricultural exhibits were held in the old high school gym, and home arts exhibits were in the elementary multi-purpose room. During the 1980s it was expanded over a couple of city blocks. Home arts and baked and bottled goods were displayed in the new Hurricane High School’s gym and other parts of the building. Commercial booths lined the street along 100 south to Hurricane Elementary where in the old gym were seed and agricultural displays. Food booths were nestled along the street under the shade trees of the Elementary. At least three Continuous Entertainment stages were set up. One on the new High School Lawn, one among the booths along 100 south, and another on the lawn at the elementary. The carnival was set up over the years in various places (football or practice field, the street, playground, and a vacant lot), boxing was held at the American Legion Boxing Arena, and a rodeo at the American Legion Rodeo Grounds. Dances were held (a teenager’s dance and a country dance) at the old tennis courts, and the American Legion patio. The music could be heard all over the downtown and nearby residential area. Two parades were held: a children’s parade on Friday evening, and a general parade on Saturday morning. Remodeling at Hurricane High School caused the County Fair to be moved to the new Hurricane Middle School in the early 1990s. It was much more cramped and congested there and only lasted a few years before the new fair grounds were built at the Washington County Regional Park, and the Washington County Fair was moved to these new facilities. Hurricane residents missed the small town celebration that had grown so large and moved from the downtown part of their community. In 1999 the first board members (David Stirland, Tom Hirschi, Jarolyn Stout, and Vera Hirschi) organized committees and the first “new” Peach Days, which was held September 3rd and 4th, 1999. It was a huge success, with even its critics admitting it was a wonderful event. The community feeling of unity was back. Fond memories of days gone by were relived, and new memories were made. The goal of the board and committees has been to keep Peach Days a smaller hometown event without an over-flux of “commercial”. Peach Days was held in its old stomping grounds at the old HHS and Hurricane elementary grounds. The old High School was torn down in 2004, so the layout was changed and expanded to the Elementary building, but the events and displays are still much the same. Then in 2010 when Hurricane Elementary was moved to a new location, Hurricane City purchased the

old school building and grounds, which is now the Hurricane Community Center. With the acquisition of the old “town square”, it allowed Peach Days to run for two full days as the school schedule no longer needed to be worked around. Whether you are a native to the area or a transplant, Peach Days will give you a great sense of community and appreciation for our pioneer heritage. You can walk through room in the Community Center or Fine Arts building and view various handiwork, garden and art displays. You may want to attend the craft show, or wander through pioneer corner and learn about the crafts and skills our pioneer ancestors passed down. Kids will enjoy the kiddy carnival, Pioneer Games and Candy Cannon. Be sure to grab a bite to eat at the food booths lining the street in front of the Community Center and relax under the shade as you listen to some local talent at the continuous entertainment. Don’t miss the parade Saturday morning or the old fashioned rodeo Saturday night or “Come See Our Valley” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for some great entertainment. Hurricane has a great heritage to celebrate. Be sure to celebrate with us this year at Hurricane Peach Days.

Peach Days Events and Activities

Exhibits–There will be Home Arts, Fine Arts, garden and canning displays in the lunchroom and various rooms of the Hurricane Community Center. Group and individual displays of handiwork from the past year may be entered. Artists of all ages will have a chance to show off their talents in different aspects of artwork. Gardeners, home canners, and bakers also get to enter their favorite products for display. The Home Arts, Fine Arts, gardening, candy and canning will all have their entries judged and ribbons will be awarded. Be sure to wander through the Hurricane Community Center & enjoy yourself as we share our talents with one another.

Parade–The parade will begin on Saturday, August 31 at 9:00 a.m. Line up starts at 8:00 a.m. There will be some fun entries in the parade this year. The parade will begin at 400 South and Main, turns down 100 South and travels West and turns South on to 300 West. It will end on 300 South and 300 West. Peach Cook-off–Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 31 at 5:00 p.m. on the south sidewalk of the elementary school for the Peach Days Peach Cook-off. Any peach dishes whether hot or cold are encouraged to be entered. Cobblers, drinks, cakes, breads or whatever creative dish you may know of, are all welcome. There will be prizes awarded! Pull out those favorite recipes and let’s show off our cooking talents. For more information, call Peggy Clyde at 635-2633. There are only two rules for the cook-off. 1- Submit your recipe with a valid phone number by August 21 to Peggy Clyde ([email protected]). 2- Bring your prepared peach dish to be judged between 4:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Judging will start at 5:00 p.m. All submitted entries will be qualified for the Grand Prize of a Bosch Bread Machine!!! Cash prizes to 1st, 2nd and 3rd runners up. A cookbook will be published containing all of the submitted recipes. Come and taste the entries after the judging around 5:45 p.m. on the south side of the Community Center.

Food and Commercial Booths–Food & Commercial booths will be spread along the street between the elementary buildings. Relax under a shade tree while you enjoy a meal or snack. Everything from hot dogs to Navajo tacos & ice cold drinks to shaved ice treats will be availabe to buy. Browse through the commercial booths for a variety of wares to purchase. There should be something for everyone.

Rodeo–Saturday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. will be an amateur Jackpot, Bull Riding, Roping, Mutton Bustin’, Chicken chase, and Gymkhana events. Homemade Show–The north Community Center lawn is the perfect place to show and buy wares from some of our local talented crafters. The craft show will be open all day Friday and Saturday.

Historic Hurricane Canal Pioneer Trek–Saturday, August 31 at 6:30 a.m. (8:00 a.m. for easy hike) will be 3 levels of hikes along the Hurricane Canal. Meet at the Heritage Park. You may choose from a mild (1/4 mile), moderate (4.5 miles), or strenuous (5.7 miles) hike. Be sure to bring water and wear good shoes. Canal shirts will be given out at the 6:30 a.m. hike.

Candy Cannon & Pioneer Games–The North lawn of the Community Center will sport a teepee where the Emersons welcome children for free Pioneer Games, and where “Emo” the Mountain Man and his family will blast candy from a cannon periodically throughout the day.

Pioneer Corner–Peach Days: A Celebration of our Heritage. This theme to our celebration we usually refer to as just Peach Days, sets the stage for the popular Pioneer Corner. In Pioneer Corner, our Heritage is shown very strongly. Many crafts and skills that our pioneer forefathers used as a part of their daily living, have been passed down and are used today both as hobbies, or in some cases as a basis for making a living. Pioneer Corner is patterned after the Southern Utah Folk Life Festival that used to be held in Zion every September. There you will find many of the same demonstrations in our Pioneer Corner. Take some time to wander through the tables under the shade on the Community Center lawn on Saturday, August 31. Stop and watch the demonstrations, ask questions, or even try your hand at many of the wonderful things available. Each demonstrator has generously donated his or her day to share with us the parts of the past that have been handed down to us today. Some booths will have samples of their items to taste such as delicious Dutch Oven potatoes, scones, or molasses candy. You won’t want to miss this fun part of Peach Days!

Dr. Travis Sanders grew up in Panguitch, Utah. After high school, he served a church mission and then afterwards moved to Provo, Utah were he went to school and married his best friend Rhonda. Peach Days Rodeo Each year hundreds of patrons enjoy the annual Peach Days Rodeo. It is held at the rodeo arena on 200 West 750 North (near the city pool). It is small town rodeo at its best. This is a mostly kids rodeo, with teens and younger riding bucking steers, or kids in the “Mutton Bustin” where they do their best to hold on to an adult sheep. There are poles, barrels, and roping for all ages, or the greased pig chase and chicken chase for kids. These kid events require no cowboy experience – just show up and join in! But by far the favorite is the “Hide Race” where one rider pulls a cow hide to the end of the arena, and a standing team mate hops on the hide and holds on to the rope for a dusty and wild ride to the finish line.

This rodeo is a bargain for families: only $3 per person or $15 for families. It is a fundraiser for Hurricane High FFA. It is held Saturday night at 7:00 pm and promises a fun filled evening for all who attend. There is a “cook shack” ready to provide burgers, nachos, and more for the hungry, or some drinks to cool you off in the summer evening. Don’t miss the Peach Days Rodeo. It is a guaranteed fun night for all who come!

Zion Piecemakers Quilt GuildZion Piecemakers Quilt Guild will host their annual Peach Days Quilt Show, which is held in the Fine Arts building. The quilts on display are made by members of our guild. We meet monthly on the second Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Craft Room at the Hurricane Community Center. New members are always welcome! Our special exhibits include our annual challenge quilts. Each participant is given a piece of the same fabric and the challenge is to make a small quilt using a good portion of this fabric. The fabric for this year features outhouses, so look for some humorous entries. You can vote for your favorite. Our opportunity quilt, pictured here, is called “America The Beautiful.” This stunning quilt showcases purple mountain majesty, a school, church, barn and houses set among many trees, fences and other quilt blocks. The quilt was pieced by Lynette Bingham of Hurricane and machine quilted by Judith Davis of Apple Valley. Our other special exhibit will feature additional “America The Beautiful” quilts made by members of our guild. Again, we ask you to vote for your

favorite. As always, our show is not a judged show, instead, ribbons are awarded for the people’s choice, so be sure to take a minute and vote for your favorites. Don’t miss your opportunity to win our “America The Beautiful” quilt. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

Home Depot Kids Activity CenterThe Home Depot’s Kids Workshops offer useful projects in-cluding the creation of toolboxes, fire trucks and mail orga-nizers, as well as more educational projects, such as a win-dow birdhouse, bughouse or Declaration of Independence frame kit.

Grand Marshals: The Scholzen Family

Henry Scholzen became a significant citizen of Hurricane, Utah. Among other things he served as the Peach Days manager and later the Washington County Fair Chairman. He was a Charter member of the Lions Club and the American Legion Post 100. In fact, he was instrumental in obtaining the American Legion Post’s #100. Each week while in Salt Lake City on business, he would check in with the American Legion’s headquarters to see when the #99 was taken. Late in the afternoon of December 24th, the office manager called Henry, letting him know that if Hurricane wanted the #100, he had better be first in line on the morning of the 26th. Henry made the 8-10 hour winter drive to Salt Lake City on Christmas day, and he was waiting first in line before 6 a.m. and got the much sought-after #100 shortly after 8 a.m.

Henry and Mary Sanders Scholzen started a family and launched a business. Henry was born in Wisconsin in 1894 of German immigrants. He was a veteran of WW I, but prior to serving his country and while working for the Union Pacific Railroad Company in Denver, he spent time in jail as a suspected German spy. Judgments based on name, religion or ethnic group have a long history.

Henry’s traits such as readiness to work hard, good judgment, managerial and organizational skills, and honesty were recognized by the U.P.R.R., and he was sent west after the war. He worked at

Yellowstone National Park when meals were served from a railroad car. He was the U.P.’s manager over Bryce Canyon and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon operations. In 1923 he was the first Union Pacific manager at Zion National Park and was in charge of the mess hall during construction of the Zion Lodge. During this period he met and married Mary Sanders of Hurricane. Henry had talked Mary and her sister Emma in to leaving their employment in Hurricane in order to work for him in Zion. After properly launching the Zion operation, Union Pacific assigned him to Los Angeles as a dining car and hotel inspector. It was here while living in Hollywood in 1925 that their only child, Jack, was born.

The Union Pacific offered a promising future, but Henry chose differently. He wanted to be his own boss, and he wanted to live in Southern Utah,

Grand Marshals continued“God’s country”. They moved to Hurricane and started to raise chickens, with the objective of selling them to restaurants in the L.A. area. Union Pacific again sought him (1928), this time to return to the Grand Canyon’s north rim to run their operations. After negations Henry took his family and chickens to the North Rim for the summer. (Note: In those days prior to automobile dominance, the U.P. ran buses from the Cedar City railhead to Zion, Bryce and the North Rim. The South Rim had its own railhead.) After fulfilling his commitment at the North Rim, the family resumed raising chickens, turkeys and rabbits in hurricane.

Highways, but in name only, had linked the parks since 1914. Henry foresaw the coming investment in improved highways and was ready to be the key supplier. His family as his workforce, they would leave Salt Lake at five in the afternoon, drive all night to one or more of the 22 work camps in Southern Utah. One of Mary’s jobs was to block the wheels on steep grades, and when little Jack was along, it was his task to watch his father’s cigar. A drooping cigar meant Henry was falling asleep

and Jack’s job was to jerk on an ear. In 1928 they established the Scholzen Produce Company to capitalize on construction of the Zion Tunnel and highway construction. After eight years, “Produce” was dropped from the company name in favor of “Products”; so now it was Scholzen Product Company. The effects of the Great Depression were mitigated for the company because the CCC projects in the area provided a market for company products. It remained a mostly one-family business and if you sought, say, dynamite to blow up a tree stump, Henry probably waited on you. A car accident in 1940 that left him in a coma for some time marked the beginning of the end for Henry. He struggled on but died in 1951 at age 57. Jack was just 15 when the accident occurred and tremendous responsibilities were now thrust upon him for which he appears to have been ready. He matured early and by age eleven he was driving and performing important warehouse functions. He began driving in earnest upon his father’s tragedy. Henry left a legacy of honesty, integrity, hard work, good business sense and civic mindedness, a legacy fully embraced by Jack.

Grand Marshals continuedJack spent many days at his grandparent’s

home (John and Fannie Sanders) when small because his parents were driving and working 18-hour days. Jack soon joined in the work, traveling with his dad and helping in the Scholzen warehouses. He knew the price of each item even before he could read and was soon verifying the list of each new shipment as it was received. Due to his father Henry’s accident, Jack left school to work fulltime in the family business. A muscular well-coordinated youth, he excelled in sports. Permanent damage from a high school football injury received prior to leaving school after his sophomore year made him ineligible for serving in WW II. He had lots of friends, but Miss Thelma Olds, a classmate, was the really important one. They were married June 26,1943. Their children are Nick, Nancy, David, Keith, Linda and Mary Lu.

Jack was fully active in community affairs. He was a member of the Lion’s Club, the Hurricane Roping Club, the Jeep Posse search and rescue group and he sponsored Little League baseball teams. Utilizing his leadership and organizational

skills, he was County Fair chairman more than once. He was for years a member and sometimes chief of the Hurricane Volunteer Fire Department. A hand-drawn two-wheeled fire hose cart was the main equipment when he started. He supported the acquisition vehicles and equipment that enabled the crew to more effectively control fires and to save lives when called upon. One life saved through Jack’s operational knowledge of the newly purchased resuscitator was that of his eight day-old daughter, Nancy.

Scholzen Products has always been a vital community asset, supplying needed services, paying taxes and providing employment. Its growth reflects that of the region. Henry hired a few workers as needed. When Nick returned from college in 1969, he became the ninth full-time employee. Since then, the company has grown to meet the needs of a growing economy. There are currently dozens of employees serving many customers between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. To this day Hurricane remains its headquarters.

2 cups water 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 large package orange Jell-O 4 cups sliced peaches 2 packages graham crackers ¾ cube butter 2 tablespoons sugar 12 oz cool whip 8 oz cream cheese

Mix together water, sugar, cornstarch and boil. Add Jell-O, cool, then add peaches. While it is cooling, crush graham crackers and mix with butter and sugar. Put half in 9 x 13-inch pan. Mix cool whip and cream cheese and pour over graham crackers. Pour cooled Jell-O mixture over cool whip. Top with remaining graham cracker mixture and refrigerate.

The All American Cloggers were established 30 years ago in Hur-ricane, Utah. Since that time, they have performed in hundreds of places including Germany, Japan, Cancun, Disneyworld and Ha-waii. They have won many grand champion trophies in national competitions. Come and see the cloggers Friday at 5:00 p.m. where they will perform dances from their recent trip to Disneyland.

Dallas Mangum and the singing group “Time Out” will be performing again this year on Saturday night on stage 1 at 7:45 pm. We look forward to seeing everyone there and having a fun evening under the stars.

Casey Lofthouse has been singing for many years, he just hasn’t been heard much past the bathroom window, until recently. Casey grew up in Northern Utah and the winter months were long and cold! He spent much of his time in the front room of the family home listening to the vinyl records. His love of Classic Country was instilled at an early age and he enjoys spending time sharing the so called “moldy oldies” every chance he gets. During middle and high school he learned alot about music and singing in the

choir plus he played the cornet and tuba. His Band is in the little black box, and the excuse for that is he doesn’t have to bail the drummer out for a Friday night gig. If you love Classic Country don’t miss Casey performing again for 2013 Peach Days

C l a s s i c Country has been togeth-er for a cou-ple of years. They are the house band for the Saint George Elks Lodge and play there every Wednes-day night. They play often around the Saint George area. Frank Melton, Garn Huntington, Jim Gerani-ous, and Charlie Mikkelson play old country favor-ites made famous by Haggard, Waylon, Cash, and others. The Johnson Creek Band

The Johnson Creek Band hails from the Salt Lake Valley, their home nestled at the foot of the Wasatch Mountain Range. The husband-and-wife duo entertains with a variety of traditional western favorites, mixed with a smattering of folk and early American tunes. Backed by Craig’s guitar and

Lenora’s fiddle, mando, harmonica and banjo, their tight vocal harmonies and easy-going manner will have you tapping your feet and singing along.

Entertainment Bios. continuedBrad Cahoon, Joe Furse, and Colton Winder have been perform-ing together since 2003 and are excited to be performing again at Peach Days this year. They accompany themselves on several instruments including the fiddle, guitar, banjo, harmonica, man-dolin, and concertina. As always, they will perform a variety of bluegrass and old-time music.

The Stout Family performs in many community and church events throughout the year. Jarolyn Stout, married to Collin, has performed her entire life with her mother Carolyn Ballard Shel-ley. As Jarolyn’s eight children came along, they joined the act. Shantel, Trinity, Chelsea, Jacob, Summer, Lucas, and Heather will all join in the performance this year. The Stouts accom-pany themselves on guitars and banjo, and will sing a variety of country and easy listening numbers both as a group and solos. Carolyn will also join in on some of their numbers. They will perform on stage one at 11:30 on Saturday.

Way Off Broads is a group of local ladies who love to sing “for fun”. The group includes Marla Gledhill, Alicelyn Jaques, Tylia Jackman, Wanda Despain, June Jeffery, and Sheri Beatty. The name was to be the stage name for the group’s initial “Broadway Magic” performance in 2008, and is descriptive of the nature of their music and outlook on life. Though known for music that is lighthearted, focusing on fun, crazy songs, and good harmony, the ladies enjoy performing some serious music as well. There are always a few surprises when these ladies get together.

The Hip-notics is a local dance troupe that until recently has been dancing under the name of Revasundari. Using a variety of Belly Dance styes and adding Spanish focloric dance, Ballet and any thing else that catches our fancy we create an upbeat family friend-ly show that is just a little bit different.

Jupiter, returning for their third appear-ance at Peach Days, began as a song-writing endeavor to blend melodic hooks, introspective lyrics and trance rhythms into songs that are both catchy and meaningful. Its five members (located in various towns across Utah) are drawn from diverse backgrounds, ranging from classic rock to opera; and from the self-taught to the collegiate. Each brings their own perspec-tives, talents, and experiences to the mix. They have been performing around the intermountain west for several years now, and are pleased to be returning to Peach Days.

This newly formed Southern Utah Gospel Choir is formed by professional & Semi-Professional musicians. They’ve so far performed in places such as the St. George Tabernacle, An-cestor Square & Hurricane Fine Arts. Their performance schedule is quickly filling up as Southern Utah finds out about this amazing group.This is NOT a regular “stiff” kinda group of people. They be-lieve that in order to spread the Gospel to all people, you’ll have to sing like you truly mean it….and that they do!!!Our local Country Celebrity, Eric Dodge has on several occa-sions invited John Houston & his Gospel Choir to sing with him, and they are scheduled to continue doing “gigs” with

him this year.So come join “The Latest & Greatest”…John Houston & his Gospel Choir this Peach Days on August 30 @ 5 pm inside the Fine Arts Building. You really don’t wanna miss out on this one!!!

The Hurricane Valley Choir was created in October of 2007 by the Hurricane Valley Arts Alliance to offer the opportunity for area singers, from high school to adult, to participate in a community choir. The choir was originally directed by War-ren Larsen, but changed directors when Larsen moved out of the area. June Jeffery, a member of the choir, will conduct this concert. Camille McCausland is the choir director and accompanist. The choir will perform in conjunction with the opening ceremony at Peach Days. Selections will include a variety of American music, including “Didn’t My Lord De-liver Daniel”, “Wade in the Water”, “Shenandoah”, “Hush, Somebody’s Callin’ My Name”, “Long Ago and Far Away”, “The Last Words of David”, “Tribute to the Armed Forces”, and “America” to name a few. The Stirlands are thrilled to be a part of the Peach Days tradition. The versatile Stirlands will harmonize to some of their favorite songs of the past and present. The show will also fea-ture clogging, tap dancing, fiddling and some new surprises. Don’t miss this fun-filled show Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

The Hurricane Force is Hurri-cane’s original premier per-forming group. Formed in 2011, this by audition only group con-sists of 20 teenagers from throughout Hurricane. These talented teens participate in 4-6 hours of classes weekly in theater ,dance and vocal instruc-tion. Many of the members also play instruments. They have literally performed in front of thousands .Performances include, Washington County fair, Peach days, International Indian pow wow, Adidas Tournament of Champions, the Dickens festival and the Bumbleberry Theater.

The Lawn Darts is South-ern Utah’s premier party band. This is not a typi-cal bar band. This is not a bar band at all, but a high octane classic rock and original band who has opened for Styx, Kansas, The Beach Boys and has headlined at the OC Tan-ner Amphitheater, Wash-

ington County Fair and St. George First Night.Driving the band at the front is the powerful voice of Travis Brown.Supplying the back bone of the band is the su-per tight rhythm section with Jeff Tuscano on Bass and Steve Gustaveson on Drums.The wing men are Lisle Crowley on guitar and Don Shelline on keyboard, flute, various percus-sion paraphernalia and vocals.The band has an extremely high level of musi-cianship, but remember, their goal is a good time for everyone involved.To book The Lawn Darts call 435-619-5193 or e mail [email protected].

Thirteen-year-old Caleb Furse has performed at many venues in St. George and Hurricane. He sings a variety of genres and currently studies voice with Brodie Perry. For two consecutive years, Caleb was selected as a finalist in Dixie’s Got Talent; he has also played the title role in Oliver at the St. George Dickens Festival. Most recently, Caleb was a soloist with the Lieto Voices Choir.

Caleb also studies piano with Lori Arnold and enjoys many hobbies besides music. He is active in scouting and spends a lot of time writing and creating. For relaxation, he loves to laugh at retro T.V. comedy shows.

Paige DeMille began singing when she was just a little girl at her mother’s knee. She remembers being about six years old, riding in the family car. She would stand on the back seat while leaning against the front seat, learning to harmonize with her mom. Eventually, mom would sing melody, dad would sing tenor, and Paige would sing alto.Paige doesn’t have a particular genre of music that she prefers performing better than another. In fact, her criteria for choosing a new song to learn is simple — is it fun, is it beautiful, and/or is it challenging? In fact, the more challenging the better. She has found over the years that learning difficult songs is one of the best ways to keep her voice flexible and her range exciting. (If only exercise was as exciting!) She also asks family and friends to tell her about songs they think she would sound good per-forming, and most of the time, she finds the song and learns it. Her programs usually include anything from country to rock to pop to opera to Broadway to patriotic to religious, depending on the venue. The only thing she hasn’t tackled yet is rap — but that doesn’t mean she never will!

After a chance meeting at a super-hero convention, Chauncey and the Chamberlains discovered that their voices were a great match. Their

repertoire focuses on crowd pleasers ranging from Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Eric Clapton, to KT Tun-stall. Their common interests are fighting crime, and happy music.

Jeri Churchill, and I do "Jeri's Parodies" Comedy songs for all occa-sions. I write and sing parodies that poke fun at the things that life throws at us women who are of a "certain age". Such as memory loss, weight gain, housework, husbands, etc...Because life is a lot easier when you can laugh at it!

Rob Goulding has been performing in Peach Days for many years and at the Washington County Fair. I've sung at lots of funerals and weddings and other impromptu settings. I en-joy singing and accompa-nying myself with guitar. Rob and Sally have served

a couple of missions and I was able to use my tal-ents there.
