Chicago Public Schools & DePaul University Community Peacemakers Initiative

President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge As part of the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge, an initiative inviting institutions of higher education to commit to a year of interfaith and community service programming, the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) & DePaul University Community Peacemakers Initiative invites college students to become involved in a year-long collaboration with high school-aged youth across the city. The partnership matches DePaul Peacemakers with CPS teachers and students to engage in a series of educational classroom-based activities focused on peace and non-violence. These activities will be facilitated by the DePaul Peacemakers with the support of a CPS teacher. Community Peacemakers Initiative The Community Peacemakers Initiative is built on an educational experience that fosters a critical understanding of violence and alternatives for peace. This involves an exploration of values, behaviors, and attitudes which promote non-violence through dialogue, practice, and consensus-building. Each of the activities in the Community Peacemakers Initiative will focus on such themes as root causes of conflict/violence, local, national and international violence, peace-makers and peace-making, healthy communication skills, and civic engagement. DePaul Peacemakers Each DePaul Peacemaker will be assigned individually/in pairs to a high school in which they will be responsible for visiting at least twice a month from January thru June 2012. As college mentors, DePaul Peacemakers will be responsible for engaging the students in promoting peace throughout their school and community in an effort to reduce violence in the city of Chicago. The initiative will culminate in a city-wide day of service on Saturday, May 5th 2012 which will bring together 3,000 youth in a day of peaceful non-violent action. Commitments and Expectations

DePaul Peacemakers and CPS Teachers who participate in the Community Peacemakers Initiative will attend training on Thursday, November 10th from 9:00am-1pm in the Cortelyou Commons.

DePaul Peacemakers commit to co-facilitating a minimum of 8-10 classroom sessions, approximately two visits per month from January through June, with a class of CPS students over the course of the school year.

Teachers and students, along with DePaul Peacemakers, will develop a service project and participate in a Peace Rally on Saturday, May 5th 2012. This city-wide event will involve all CPS & DePaul service day participants, along with various universities and community-based organizations.
