From the Pastor “Holy Week and The Celebration!”

Have you ever asked Christ to walk with you?

Oftentimes, when in trouble, or pain, or misery, or loneliness, or illness, or tragedy, and many, many other times of human despair and suffering – peo-ple ask, “Where is Jesus now?” They usually beg in their prayers, “Lord Je-sus, walk with me through this lonely and dark time. Help carry this load for it weighs me down.”

The old favorite, Psalm 23, catches this personal Savior appeal well. For it is in the dark time, the valley of death time, that the poem gets personal. “Even though I walk through the valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil for YOU are with me.” Instead of talking about what God does, as in the first few lines, here we hear the oneness, the togetherness, of the Lord coming to be with; to get up close and personal. It is usually in the dark times of Life that we open ourselves up so that Jesus and the Holy Spirit can enter in and walk with us.

Did you know that Christ asks YOU to walk with Him?

That’s what Holy Week is – Jesus crying out to each one of His own, “Walk with me for the load is too much.”

Several times, Jesus told His friends that they would each have to follow Him. “Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’” (Mat 16:24 ESV). But in the end, no one did. On that lonely march to the hill, He had mockers, spitters, scorners, offended-ones, haters, and leaders who cared not for His plight. But He had few friends walk with Him. Talk about the ugliness of society.

Now He asks, not His people. He asks, not the congregation. He asks, not The Church - - - He asks YOU! Jesus begs You to walk with Him. Through the hate. Through the offense. Through the pain, and through the treachery. Jesus cries out to YOU. Yes, you! “Walk with me; Watch with me; Die with me!”

All so that YOU – not the Church, not ‘the people,’ not the congregation, but YOU! – can see the bigness of His love for YOU! Spend a few hours with Jesus this Holy Week. Watch and pray with Him at the Garden. See Him taken for the mock-trial. Hear the offensive and bogus charges leveled against Him. Watch the Governor play politics and sentence Him. Then walk with Jesus to that Hill, see Him die.

And know …. The story, the drama, the battle, the savior … is not over … …

——The Apostles of Science——

Stephen Hawking once said that we believed in God until science offered a more convincing explana-tion. How so? I love the Big Bang, or at least the acting, and the scientific theory is pretty intriguing as well. Like you, I have read many of the popular books penned by the physicists. In some ways, Ste-phen Hawking has become the prophet of our age, along with his fellow apostles Carl Sagan and Neil

deGrasse Tyson. And for fun, we have the televangelists, Bill Nye, our Osteen, and Al Gore, our doomsday prophet.

Indeed, a common theme runs throughout. From early on in life, Hawking claimed that we are simply one lit-tle planet in a great big universe. That indeed was the leitmotif of Carl Sagan, whose famous "Pale Blue Dot" sermon entranced a prior generation with the idea that we are but a tiny little piece of a great big universe. If we are to wonder in awe, we should do so at the universe, not at a God who created it. If we are to question our worth in such enormity, then we might recall with Tyson that we are, lo and behold, Stardust. Release the glitter and light incense. We are made from the cosmic dust of a burning rock. Wonderful stuff, even if we have to endure some end of the world warnings.

It will be interesting to see in the obituaries if they say much about Hawking's musings on life on other plan-ets. He said, "As I get older I am more convinced than ever that we are not alone." Sound religious. Hopeful? Perhaps not. While Sagan had wide eyes in hope for life in the great beyond, that is in the universe's outer rings, or perhaps in another parallel universe, Hawking warned, "If so, they will be vastly more powerful and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria." Here, I think it would have been time to phone a friend, to call a priest, or at least Sigmund Freud. What we see in these words is not thoughts about what lies out there, but a projection of what was within. Many, like Hawking, are indeed afraid of a life beyond our own. That is to say, the are afraid of God, of judgment, of a God who knew more. Science seeks knowledge, but the philosophy that goes along with it has another goal entirely.

If our planet is an accident, there is no accountability, no day of judgment. If we are so small in so vast a uni-verse, we are hidden away, like a man in the shadows, or for that matter, an agitator in a crowd. For good rea-son, we love the darkness. Science can't really explain what it claims. Transport me to the big bang, but can you take me back before that? Can you explain, or even begin to, the origin of the origins? What the popular physicists offer is really a psychological salve, numbing, or a buffer between our soul and a day of reckoning.

But perhaps, we may need to take a step back from the big wide universe, and look more closely at the quan-tum world. At the littlest of little things. That might be where the deeper truths lie, both in science, and in the-ology. Who knows? Maybe the idea of overlapping universes teaches us something? Maybe there are worm-hole that can bring us from one end of the universe into the other, or into another place entirely. And maybe, as Hawking showed, the black hole does not have the final say.

We might stop to think that God is not far from us, nor do we need long-distances probes and telescopes to find life. It might just be here. When we worship, we say it is heaven on earth, we are gathered with angels and archangels, our very Lord is present in very body and very blood. This may be a good lesson for us as Christians as well. Ok, go ahead and say that your God is an awesome God. And that is true. That he created the universe and all that is in it. Again, true. But in saying that, you are still buffering. Even better to consider the tiny child in Mary's womb, the baby born, and most especially that man upon the cross. Gaze up into the heavens and wonder, but then gaze up at the man, nailed to the tree, and there find something better. But then, like the scientists, we too often would rather not look there either.

Newsletter Article- April 2018

Our Father in heaven sent His Son, Jesus, to be our savior. His atoning sacrifice is the firstfruits of all the dead, a pleasing aroma to His Father – and ours – so that His per-fect life and death count for all who believe in Him. He claimed us as His own children in Holy Baptism. He sustains and strengthens our faith with His Holy Word and His Body and Blood. As new creatures, who have put on Christ, we bear good fruit. We do the good works prepared for us, which He makes known to us in His Word. By faith then, trusting in the Word of God, we do what he says because He does not lie and always keeps His promises. For “without faith it is impossible to please God, be-cause anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Heb. 11:6). And so the Lord promises: “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine” (Prov. 3:9-10). How do we honor the Lord with the wealth that God has given us in His generosity? By giving it generously to those whom the Lord has called us to love and support: your family, your society, and your church. And His promise is that in so doing, you will never lack. I can almost hear it now: “But that’s from the Old Testament!” But our Lord Jesus Himself gives us similar promises in the New Testament. He says, at the conclusion of the parable of the talents, “For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance” (Matt. 25:29). And then at the end of the parable of the dishonest manager, he says: “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money” (Luke 16:10–13). And in His sermon on the mount, he says: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:19–21). We have become conditioned against these promises because of their misuse by the peddlers of the prosperity gospel – the guys on TV who say you get rich by putting God in your debt. And thus, we miss out on the fact that God does reward temporal faith-fulness in temporal matters with temporal blessings. It’s no quid pro quo. It’s all from God’s grace, His fatherly divine goodness and mercy. But those Bible passages just quoted do in fact say what they say! It’s not the Old Testament’s problem. It’s ours. It is almost as if we have become so jaded against this that we think it a virtue to be stingy with our offerings. But our Father in heaven still loves to bless those who bless others. He loves to give to those who give freely and generously. In fact, he challenges us to challenge Him: “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need” (Mal. 3:10). And so, while we don’t give so that we would get, we do receive from the Lord in order to give, and He will bless your giving with more receiving. For “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things” (Rom. 8:32)?

Resourcefully yours...

CJ and His Father's Hand

This story actually begins almost ten months ago, however, honoring my "promise to self discipline", I will limit its sharing to relevant highlights only. And of course, I must include a brief application clos-ing! CJ's life began in what some would call a "haphazard happening" during an intimate sharing of love and desire between his mother and father. No details...just the most remarkable miracle of specific sperm meeting up with exactly timed egg and forming an embryo - a new life begins! At a specific time; in a purposefully prepared place; rather dark, damp and oh so small a surrounding; yet so cozy and comforting! CJ, yet unknown to anyone save his Creator, nestles in and waits...for what? All his needs are being met. Changes begin happening. There is growth for him and this place he's come to call "home". It seems they have been made for one another! "Does anyone know I'm in here?" Soon She does - and so will many others - when the time is right! I suspected CJ, as we refer to him, much earlier than I could physically see him by shape and size. His mom kept me up-to-date on a weekly basis. Initially it was the sonogram. Amazing! While compared in size to various fruits and vegetables, his development was also described in details as minute as heartbeat, fingernails, eyes and eyelashes. Then came the times I could truly, with my own eyes, see his shape, movement and positioning within his ever accommodating environment. Was that an arm or a leg? He sure likes to curl around Mom's left side. Slowly he has moved to center stage positioned to begin another journey, enter a new and different "home". We all wait. A detail I failed to mention is that CJ is able to hear, recognize voices and even the difference in a silent touch! Concentrate on the touch. A pregnant woman often rubs her belly and caresses her yet to be seen unborn child. A multitude of hands can be seen personally reaching out to touch a woman's belly, often without even asking permission! I wonder what that baby experiences in that moment. I offer an amazing and meaningful fact from CJ's mother. At times, while she and the little one were peacefully sleeping, CJ's father would slip silently into bed and gently lay his hand on her belly and his child's being. Immediately the little one awoke and responded with much movement - "Hey, I know that hand. It's my daddy's!" (And Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit." Luke 23) "But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman..." That woman was Mary, a virgin who was engaged to Joseph. An angel told her she would give birth to the Son of God who would save people from their sins. Creator become creature. Giving up ALL to live a life like ours - from the very beginning! The wonder of Easter must be seen through the lens of Christmas and in like order Christmas with Easter. Jesus' total sacrifice of total love was for you, and me and all of us! To God be all glory and honor; to Jesus be all thanksgiving and praise; to Spirit full invitation to hearts! Jacki Schulze, Resource Coordinator

Easter falls on April Fool's Day this year. Do you know why it's called that? The answer will be at the end of this article.

Christians are not fools. We have a firm belief that Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sun-day. Mary, Peter and John weren't fools when they saw the empty tomb and knew that Jesus had risen. We are not fools to believe that God kept His promise to sent a Savior. Join us on Easter Sunday at 7:30 or 10:30 to celebrate our Risen Lord. When a new calendar was designed, the new year began on January 1st instead of April 1st. Those who continued to believe April 1st was New Year's Day were called April Fools. Your Baptism Birthday/Anniversary

Celebrating Baptism anniversaries helps us to cel-ebrate that time when we were too young to re-member. Baptism is God’s grace in action when we are given our uniqueness as a child of God. Baptism is God’s action, not ours where God ex-tends His grace and acceptance even to those who do not know what that is. In Baptism we become a member of God’s own family and are marked as Christ’s own forever.

Some of us know when and where we were bap-tized. Some of us do not know either of those things. More important is that we celebrate our Baptism. The Board of Shepherding would like to recognize Baptism celebrations as we recognized birthdays. If you do not know the exact date of your Baptism, it is more important to celebrate the Baptism itself. Pick a date and begin to celebrate your Baptism, a day which is so important as it is a reminder of the day you were given eternal life. Please let the church office know what day you have selected as your Baptism celebration so we can recognize your joyful celebration!

Children of Peace just fin-ished celebrating St. Pat-rick’s Day this last week. It was fun to learn about the green representing the beautiful coun-tryside of Ireland. We learned that St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach about the Holy Trinity being 3 in one. We are presently reading Benjamin’s Box. The children are discovering the events that led up to Jesus being crucified and his resurrection. Each day we read one of the stories and open an egg to see what is inside. The children also get to tell me what should be inside Benjamin’s Treasure Box his Grandfather gave him. This helps reinforce the stories and the events. We will be reading many stories about Easter over the next two weeks. Ms. Sharon, Ms. Linda, Ms. Tammy, and Ms. Jean are planning many fun activities to celebrate Easter. We will be having lots of fun. I have enjoyed the Lenten Soup Suppers that Peace Church has been hosting the on Wednes-day night during lent. The variety of soups has been wonderful. A few daycare families also asked about the suppers and joined us this last week. Always so rewarding to seeing parents finding time to get involved with what the child/children is interested in. We are so happy to have parents feel welcome enough to join us during for our daily activities. If you would like to join us sometime just give me a call or send me an email.
