For love and faith are exact opposites in their intentions, their tasks, and their values. Love yields to everyone. But faith says: “I yield to no one; but everything must yield to me –people, nations, kings, princes, and judges of the earth.”
As Psalm 2 says, “Now, therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, etc. If you do not, you will perish in the way.”

O C The Lord has blessed our Peace Lutheran family richly in this past year, giving us a new building, our ministries on a combined campus, a brand new ministry in Grow in Peace Learning Center, an expanded scope to our ministries, new faculty, staff and many new Peace Lutheran Church family members.
At the same time, our expanded campus, ministries and the many opportunities for ministry in our growing community places challenges before us as we strive to carry out and, Lord willing, continue to expand our ministries at Peace.
Through God’s Word and special presentations, we will explore these themes in the irst three Sundays of October, both noting the blessings God has given us and how with his help we can meet these challenges.
Watch for more information and plan on being present each Sunday in October as we consider how as a Church family we get to move Onward in Christ!

The irst “deaconess” we know of in the Christian Church is Phoebe (Romans 16:1). The Bible sets parameters for a deacon’s character in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. The word “deacon” means “server” or “minister.” Saint Stephen was called with six others to the role of a deacon ministry (Acts 6:1-7). Perhaps we are more familiar with the term “staff minister.” But we would not be the irst WELS church to call a deaconess. We avoided designating Judy as a “staff minister” because that title is treated differently by the WELS for calling purposes. Our Call to Judy Metzger is an internal Call, meaning she has been duly called by Peace congrega-tion into the public ministry. But her name will not be placed on call lists so that other congrega-tions might call her. (If she were called as a staff minister, she would.) Nor will she be eligible for the WELS pension plan.
W J M ?Judy grew up in Grafton, Wisconsin, on Lake Michigan. Having attended Lutheran grade and high schools, she attained a degree from the old Dr. Martin Luther College in Ele-mentary Education and taught for 4 ½ years following graduation. She earned a Masters degree in Counseling and Guidance at UW Madison, and worked in a residential treat-ment center before receiving a Divine Call to work in campus ministry.
For over 22 years Judy worked in outreach to Madison college students at Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel. She is delighted that a good number of those students share member-ship with her at Peace.
Most recently Judy worked in a day resource center for Dane County’s homeless popu-lation and at an adult day center for those who are aging and infirm. Judy likes to read,
dig in the dirt, and be out on the water. She feels blessed with an opportunity to serve again in ministry right here at Peace.

C N D to include providing more dedicated spiritual guid-ance and counsel to mem-bers in assistance to the Pastors, leading our wom-en’s ministry efforts at Peace, assisting Pastor Arndt with outreach activ-ities, etc.;
3) Developing volunteer pro-grams to support Admin-istration functions; and,
4) Developing a system for organizing key policy and operational procedures.
On Sunday, September 15, 2019, the Administrative Church Council proposed to the voters that we extend a divine Call to Ms. Judith (Judy) Metzger to be a deaconess and administrative coordina-tor here at Peace.
The Council recognized the very special opportunity to call Judy due to her outstand-ing credentials and experienc-es in the ministry. We also have experienced a recent vacancy in our administra-
tive coordinator role, so we are integrating some of those administrative coordinator responsibilities.
The voters approved the rec-ommendation at that meet-ing. We envision the Call to of icially begin in early Octo-ber.
The general responsibilities of this new position will in-clude: 1) Providing direct support
for Pastors; 2) Deaconess responsibilities

Christians should be concerned with only one question, namely, “Is it God’s Word?” Beyond this they are not to engage in subtle disputations. They should not ask whether it is possible. If God has said it, then we should be sure that he will not lie, even if we do not understand the “how” or the “when.”
Whoever therefore wants to be a Christian should tear out the eyes of his reason, listen only to what God says, render himself captive to God and say, “although these things which I hear are to me incomprehensible and incredible, nevertheless because God has said it and has confirmed it with powerful miracles, therefore I believe it.” [Luther]
It is not Christianity that needs to be made reasonable. It is reason that needs to be made Christian.

B P On Sunday, September 8, fourteen boys gathered with their parents for the irst of icial meeting of our newly recreated Lutheran Boy Pioneers.
We’ve had Boy Pioneers in the past with varying degrees of suc-cess. After a hiatus of several years the program has been rede-signed. Perhaps to the surprise of some, it does not begin at age 6. It begins at grade six and continues through high school.
The intent and anticipation is that the boys will be undertaking ma-
jor adventures and learning important skills. The program will be largely led and conducted by the boys themselves so that they learn leadership and planning skills.

We thank Dave & Joan Runke for opening up their yard and hosting the event!
Peace congregation has 52 high schoolers. 25 attend public high school and 27 attend Lakeside.

This summer, I took on the challenge of reading 60 bible chapters of my choice. Even though I was only home for three weeks due to camps and family trips, I ended up read-ing 77 chapters.
One of the camps that kept me away from home during the summer was Basic Encamp-ment at Camp Atterbury in Indiana, which lasted from July 7th to July 13th. I attend-ed the Encampment as part of my involvement as a Cadet in Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Basic
Encampment was by far the most challenging week of my life. As soon as I was dropped off, I heard staff members yelling, “Hurry up Cadets! Move with a purpose!” and practically chasing us to the barracks. More of the same was to follow, with what seemed like endless drilling and yelling. We were not al-
lowed to contact anyone out-side of the Encampment and were given almost no time to talk to the other Cadets in our light.
Before the irst day was even over, I felt tremendously over-whelmed and alone. I missed my family and realized just how much I’d taken every-thing in my life for granted.
I have to admit, I did cry that night in bed. But as I laid there in the half-darkness, I remembered the Bible I’d brought along with me as the only reading material allowed at Encampment. I decided that if I couldn’t fall asleep, I might as well get some of my Bible reading challenge done.
I lipped open to the book of Psalms by chance, and chose a random one to get started. This is what I read: “Inyou,Lord, I have taken refuge; letme never be put to shame. Inyour righteousness, rescueme
and deliverme; turn your eartomeandsaveme.Bemyrockand refuge, towhich I canal-waysgo;givethecommandtosaveme, for you aremy rockandmyfortress.”
That is the opening of Psalm 71, and when I read it, I im-mediately felt comforted. It was as if I knew I wasn’t alone anymore, because God was there with me, and I could pray to him whenever I need-ed. I kept reading more Psalms each night, and it be-came my favorite part of the day. Every night I looked for-ward to it, and the strength it would give me to get through the next day, and the next.
In the end, I am glad I got to go through the experience of Basic Encampment. I think every Cadet who attended grew as a person, but I got an even better gift: my faith grew too.

This past summer, our Peace high schoolers were invited to take on a Bible-reading challenge. They could choose fromone of four options. In 60 days they could1)Read the entire New Testament; 2) Read the Gospels and Acts; 3) Read the Epistles; or 4) Read 60 random chapters of the Bible.
8 students took up the challenge. At the end of the summer they were asked to write something about their experience with their reading. The following was written by Lauretta Loesch. Laurettais asophomore atSun Prairie High School.
Baptism is a source of great comfort to us, particularly when we feel filthy. When we feel unworthy of God, our Baptism reminds us that God has come near to us. We can, therefore, approach Him without fear. He has spoken to us by name, claiming us, cleansing us, and putting the saving mark of the cross on our heard and on our heart.
