A driver in the western Afghan city of Herat, he crosses the border regularly, taking passengers in his transit van to Mashhad in Iran and carry- ing thousands of dollars to a country desperately starved of foreign exchange. “Lately it’s been possible to make good money with dollars in Iran,” he said. They said the resolve by all par- ties to continue the war in the country is a shame. This comes a day after President Ashraf Ghani announced the end of the ceasefire and ordered Afghanistan’s armed services to resume operations across the country. “The nation has shown they are ready for peace, this is the great- est achievement. The ceasefire was a controlled experiment. The government is ready whenever the Taliban wants a ceasefire. The ceasefire was 98 percent success- ful,” Ghani said. He also stated that many Taliban members are tired of the war and want peace and that in turn the nation showed that it is ready for reconciliation. Ghani announced a ceasefire on June 12 – that was carried out over Eid-ul-Fitr. The Taliban also called a ceasefire over Eid, but only for three days. He said more than 300 students, including girls, were evacuated to the Charikar Civil Hospital, poisoned after drinking toxic wa- ter. Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, spokesman for the Herat Zonal Hospital, told Pajhwok Af- ghan News the incidents of suicide attempts happened in Herat City, the provincial capi- tal, and districts. He added of the 319 people attempting sui- cide five lost their lives while 24 incidents involved men. Sherzad said the attempts included hanging, drug poisoning or using alcohol. He did not have number for the people who attempted suicide during the first two months of last solar year but added that 1,800 people tried to kill themselves, but 19 died. Reasons of suicide: Suraya, 27, a resident of Karurkh district who attempted to finish her life by eating opium, said her husband was a drug addict who always fought with her on trivial issues and found every reason to beat her. Suraya is currently under treatment at the Herat Zonal Hospital: “I ate enough amount of opium after a clash with my husband. I wrapped up myself in a blanket and did not know what happened until my eyes opened in hospital.” Suraya married eight years ago and has no children. She complains about stomach and other internal pain. She regrets her suicide attempt but says she had no other option. Fatema, not a real name, took tablets in an attempt to take her life to avoid her forced marriage. “I attempted suicide to protest my forced marriage with my cousin,” said the 16-year- old.
