*67mm Sling (S322-67mm)Novopress offers alternative slings for use on different press systems. As such we have toreinforce the following instruction.

Where 67mm slings are required for crimping XPress Copper and XPress Carbon fittings, installers must only use the Novopress sling reference 36516-01, marked “WOESTE Yorkshire 67” as this is the correct profile for our XPress Press-fit 67mmfittings. See photo on right.

Under no circumstances should any other brand of sling be used with our 67mm fittings asthese will lead to an incorrect crimp resulting in an immediate joint failure and invalidatethe Pegler Yorkshire Warranty.

XPress 67mm fittings that have inadvertently been crimped with the wrong brand of slingcannot be successfully re-crimped with the “WOESTE Yorkshire 67” sling and unfortunatelywill have to be cut out and replaced with a new fitting using the correct sling.

Power supplyIt is essential when preparing to undertake an installation using XPress fittings and toolsthat a suitable constant power source is available. If the supply of power is not constant itmay affect the performance of the joint.

Checking the power source is particularly important prior to joining with the S301/EC03Pressmax tool as it includes safety software, which detects the amount of power availableto the machine. If there is not enough for the tool to initiate the pressing cycle andcomplete a sound joint the tool will not commence the pressing operation. This feature isparticularly useful when installing large size press fittings, as the pressure required to pressthese fittings is significantly grater than for smaller fittings, hence the power supply to thetool must be guaranteed.

It is therefore recommended that when using a portable transformer to provide power tothe press tool, the transformer should be a minimum of 3KVA rated in order that acontinuous uninterrupted power supply is always available.

When a semi-permanent source of power such as a generator is being used it is essentialthe plant is well maintained. The maximum cable size from generator to outlet and theminimum length of cable between the power outlet and the tool should be used.

Press-fit solutionsWorking temperatures

Working temperatures and pressure tablesXPress Copper fittings have all been testedand are suitable for use with approved tubesat temperatures from -24ºC to 110ºC at amaximum working pressure of 16barthroughout the temperature range.

XPress Solar is approved with tube meetingthe temperature rates shown in the tablebelow and operates from -35ºC to 200ºC at a maximum working pressure of 16barthroughout the temperature range.

XPress Stainless and XPress Carbon fittingshave been tested and are suitable for usewith approved tubes at temperatures from -20ºC to 110ºC at a maximum workingpressure of 16bar throughout thetemperature range. For high working pressureapplications contact the Pegler Yorkshiretechnical help desk.

In wet systems based installations werecommend all systems be thoroughly testedupon completion. The installation may betested to 1.5 times the working pressure ofthe system, up to a maximum of 16bar. If higher test pressures are required adviceshould be sought from Pegler Yorkshire.

Pressure testing of carbon steel systemsThe following recommendations applyconcerning the testing of XPress Carbon Steel.

Due to the potential for corrosion andperforation of carbon steel tube and fittingsystems left partially drained for extendedperiods following hydraulic testing. It isrecommended that XPress Carbon Steelsystems be dry air/nitrogen tested, up to amaximum of 3bar.

If hydraulic testing must be undertaken thefollowing should be considered.

A. The test water should contain anti-corrosion chemicals with the intention thatpost testing the system shall be leftcompletely full of water (suitable protectionagainst freezing will also have to beconsidered).

B. If leaving the system full of water is notpractical then every effort shall be made tofully drain and dry the pipe work by purgingwith dry air.

Regarding the air/nitrogen testing of pipework with XPress Carbon Steel crimpedfittings the following points will need to beconsidered.

1. The air should be clean, dry and free fromoil. Excessive oil carry over in compressed airmay be detrimental to the EPDM seals. This isnot a problem with nitrogen.

2. Air is many times more searching thanwater. Hence, if the purpose of the air test isonly leak detection, then 0.5bar pressure willbe more than sufficient. Higher pressures canin fact mask sealing issues that would berevealed by low-pressure tests.

3. The need for higher test pressures to provethe mechanical integrity of the joints bringswith it serious safety issues. Testing for sucha failure mode with high-pressureair/nitrogen is potentially very dangerous asthe energy stored in 5bar air/nitrogen, whenreleased suddenly, could lead to damage toequipment or more seriously, injury topersonnel. HSE issue guidelines for suchtesting should be strictly adhered too.

4. It is therefore; recommended that aninitial low pressure test at 0.5bar is carried

out, having put the necessary safetymeasures in place, to enable any leaks to befound. Significantly leaking, un-pressed ordamaged joints shall be replaced, but thosewith low leakage rates should be identifiedfor close inspection during the high-pressuretest. The full loading of the ‘O’ rings oftenresolve small leaks identified during the0.5bar test. When satisfied that the systemis sound and having the necessary safetymeasures in place a 1.5 times workingpressure test can be carried out as per theCopper Development Association (CDA)Guidelines document ‘Pressure Testing PipingSystems’. Leaking joints at this stage shouldbe identified and marked for replacement. The system pressure should then be reducedto 0.5bar again to confirm that no persistentlow-pressure leaks are present.

XPress Copper Gas fittings are approved foruse with copper tubes to BS EN 1057 attemperatures from -20ºC to 70ºC and amaximum working pressure of 5bar foroutside above ground pipework and 1barwithin buildings.

As part of the DVGW/GL (formally BritishGas) approvals process, XPress Gas fittingshave passed the High temperature test at650°C for 30 minutes at PN1 (copper)/PN5(stainless).

N.B. The maximum temperature and pressure range in any system is dictated by the component with the lowestperformance rating.

Achieving low temperaturesFor products used in water systems, workingtemperatures of less then 4°C can only beachieved if antifreeze is added to the system.

Localised annealing of copper tubeXPress Copper installation should not becarried out within 300mm of a brazed orsoldered joint, as the high temperaturerequired for capillary jointing anneals thecopper tube rendering it too soft for press-fit jointing. In an existing XPressCopper installation, brazing or solderingshould not be carried out within 300mm of an existing press-fit joint as this maydamage the ‘O’ ring.

Do not braze or weld XPress carbon or XPressstainless steel tubes.

The following are some of the specific design considerations which are important to take account of when designing and installing pipework systems containing XPress fittings.

Thermal movementThermal movement is a majorconsideration when designingplumbing and heating systems.Pipework systems expand andcontract with changes intemperature. If they are fixed

too rigidly and their movementrestricted, the systems will besubject to stress which must beavoided. So it’s important totake the effect of thermalmovement into account whendesigning or installing a system.

It’s especially important toavoid stress concentrationsbetween fixed points typicallyfound at radiators, valves andother fittings.

The following tables showthermal expansion details for a

range of tube/pipe lengths andtemperature changes. For furthercalculations please refer to thePegler Yorkshire System DesignDocument or visit the website.

Correct anchoring Always ensure the spur used to anchor thebranch of a tee or connecting a radiator is long enough to allow normal thermalmovement. Failure to observe this simplerule can lead to a failure. Incorporatingexpansion loops or bellows devices into thesystem can help guard against suchproblems, whilst a horseshoe link or offset(see diagrams) is an ideal way to counteractcontinual thermal cycling.

Techniques for expansion stress relief

Design considerationsSome contracts may still require thatproprietary chemicals are used to cleanse andflush pipework before full commissioning.XPress is compatible with a wide selection ofproducts, to find out more contact us.

Pipe restraintIn any installation, the system should besupported to ensure the minimum stress isimposed on the tube/pipe and joints. For themaximum spacing of supporting brackets forinternal installations, please see the tables(above).

InsulationFor all XPress Systems, we recommend youadhere to the insulation requirements asspecified by the Water Supply (WaterFittings) Regulations and BuildingRegulations 1999. These requirements areequally applicable to plastic pipe andstainless steel tube.

Phenolic foamWhen using rigid phenolic foam (or otherthermal insulation) to lag pipework,

always remember to refer to the laggingmanufacturer’s fixing instructions. To avoidthe risk of external corrosion of copperpipework lagged with this foam, theEuropean Phenolic Foam Associationrecommend that such insulation products be installed with a moisture barrier. Materialslike Densopaste or a plastics covering appliedby the tube manufacturer both provide anappropriate barrier between the outer surfaceof the tube or fitting and the foam.

Some manufacturers of this type of laggingsupply their products with an internal,factory-applied sodium silicate barrier toprevent external corrosion problems. However, if you do need to add a barrierproduct, we recommend that all XPress fittings be fully installed before these are applied and that they arecompletely coated.

Local Water AuthorityWe recommend consulting the local waterauthority when it comes to pipeworkaccessibility.

Building in dimensionsAll Building in dimensions are correct at thetime of going to press. Pegler Yorkshirereserves the right to change thesedimensions without prior notice, however to ensure you are using the most up to dateinformation please refer to our web sitewww.pegleryorkshire.co.uk

Covered pipeworkMaking provision for thermal movement isvital where pipework of any material isinstalled under screed or plaster or passesthrough brick or blockwork. The preferredpractice is to use tubing with factory appliedprotective plastic covering incorporating airgaps to accommodate thermal movement orto pass tubes and pipes through sleeves orconduits or to lay them in ducts surroundedby loose, inert non-rigid material such asvermiculite or glass wool. For furtherinformation, consult the publication BS 6700:2006 Design, installation, testingand maintenance of services supplying water for domestic use within buildings their curtilages.

Press-fit solutionsSystem design considerationsand tube expansion

Spacing Fitting spacing

Sufficient space must be left betweenfittings to allow jaws or slings to beattached to operate. See table for fitting spacing.

Minimum projection

Similar consideration should be given to thedistance pipe stubs project through walls or bulkheads. Refer to adjacent table.

Good practice

Projection distances shown in the adjacenttable also ensure that the subsequentinstallation will be a convenient distancefrom the wall.

AdditivesFor the most up to date information onadditives compatible with Pegler Yorkshiresystems please refer to the web sitewww.pegleryorkshire.co.uk/en/brochures/bulletins. We strongly recommend consultinga commissioning engineer in conjunctionwith the manufacturer prior to their use.

Tube bendingPortable bending machines are ideal forcopper tubes up to 28mm. Most machinesbend the tube between matched formers and back guides that support the outsidediameter (OD) of the tube. This eliminatesthe risk of the tube wall collapsing.

The point at which the bending pressure isexerted must be maintained at the correctdistance in front of the former’s point ofsupport. It’s also important to keep formersand guides well lubricated. Bending tubescorrectly will avoid any wrinkling andflattening that can affect flow conditions.

Using adjustable bending machines (whichallow the pressure on the back guide to beadjusted) will ensure perfect bends everytime so long as the root (inside) bendingradius is at least 3 times the outsidediameter of the tube.

With the bending of carbon tube it isimportant to ensure the weld seam is kept to the inside radius of the bend.

Pipework clearanceWhen designing an XPress System, pleasetake care to ensure all joints can beaccessed easily. Observe minimum gaps andinsertion distances to ensure sufficientaccess for the pressing tool, whereapplicable.

Thermal expansionWhen including expansion joints in a systemtake care not to introduce tensional stresswhen assembling and tightening threadedconnections. The XPress range includes maleand female connectors for the correctjointing of expansion joints.

XPress ‘Leak Before Press’XPress Copper, XPress Carbon, XPress Stainlessand XPress Solar offer a unique ‘Leak BeforePress’ feature (LBP) which enables anyconnections which haven’t been pressed tobe easily identified during pressure testing atpressures as low as 0.5bar.

XPress Carbon and XPress Stainless The LBP feature on both XPress Carbon andXPress Stainless (sizes 15mm-54mm) iscreated by the use of a specially profiledEPDM ‘O’ ring.

The LBP ‘O’ rings have been speciallydesigned to incorporate a series of threegrooves in its surface through which waterwill leak from any un-pressed fitting. Whenpressed, the ‘O’ ring distorts, closing thegrooves to create a fully water- and air-tight connection.

The ‘O’-ring is black for XPress Copperand green for XPress Solar.

XPress Copper fitting

Leak path

Copper tube

XPress Copper/XPress SolarWhilst the mechanical properties of XPressCopper with LBP are different, the benefitsare the same. The softer nature of copperenables the LBP feature to be incorporatedinto the ‘O’ ring bead in the fitting. Thebead is slightly triangular in shape and thiscreates three spaces between the fittingand the tube through which water will leakif the fitting is not pressed. One additionaladvantage of this system is that there isstill sufficient contact between the ‘O’ ringand the tube to prevent it moving wheninserted. When pressed the shape of the ‘O’ ring bead is transformed from itstriangular shape to a round shape which, once again, is perfectly water- and air-tight.

Gas ‘O’ rings (and ‘O’ rings)Pegler Yorkshire does not recommend ‘O’rings are removed from the standard productand replaced with a gas ‘O’ ring. To preventthis gas ‘O’ rings are not offered as spareswithin the XPress accessories range. We onlyrecommend gas fittings are purchased asfully assembled products. We also do notrecommend that gas ‘O’ rings are removedand replaced with standard ‘O’ rings.

Connecting tubes made from dissimilar metalThe UK Water Regulations recommend thattubes and fittings made from different typesof metals shall not be connected directlytogether except where galvanic action isunlikely or where effective measures aretaken to prevent it. Galvanic corrosion is aprocess whereby the materials that come into contact with each other oxidises orcorrodes. If you are in doubt, werecommend you refer to the full anddetailed information provided in WaterRegulations Guide (G2.11 and R3.2), or bycontacting the Water Regulations AdvisoryScheme [email protected].

Mixed metal installationsThe substitution of stainless steel XPress orTectite 316 fittings on a galvanised carbonsteel installation is acceptable in heatingand chilled water applications, if required.

When joining copper to carbon steel werecommend the use of a yellow metal i.e. brass or gunmetal to prevent galvanic corrosion.

When doing this, care must be taken toprotect the SC640 galvanised tube surfacefrom the increased risk of external corrosionat the stainless/galvanised steel interface.

Galvanised carbon steel is anodic tostainless steel in air and, if the pipeline isallowed to become wet, there is a risk oflocalised corrosion of the carbon steel tubesurface adjacent to the stainless steelfitting. This potential problem is less likelyin heating pipe work which usually remainshot and dry.

In chilled water installations, anaccumulation of environmental condensateon the pipe work could, under somecircumstances, leach out aggressive

chemicals from the insulation, resulting incorrosion, particularly at the stainlesssteel/carbon steel interface. Consequently,we recommend that where stainless steelfittings are installed on carbon steel pipe, the joint area should be provided withadditional protection to prevent localisedcorrosion. This can be as simple as wrappingthe interface area with an imperviousmaterial such as Denso or PVC tape.

Provided these precautions are taken, thereis no reason why the combination ofstainless steel fittings and carbon steeltube should not be entirely satisfactory.

Gas familiesThere are three gas families:

n 1st Family - manufactured gas

n 2nd Family - natural gas

n 3rd Family - LPG, compressed propane and butane gas

XPress Copper Gas and Stainless Gas do nothave the LBP feature for safety reasons and are designed for use in internal andexternal above ground 2nd and 3rd familygas services.

Guide to installationJointing procedures are almost identical for every type of XPressfitting and compatible tube material. This includes XPress fittingswith ‘Leak before Press’ (LBP). Where there are variations these areshown on the following pages and in the fitting instructions. To ensure the fittings stay clean and the ‘O’ ring remains protectedfrom damage, only remove the fitting from its packagingimmediately prior to installation.

XPress gas fittings are not leak before press.

The tube can be fully inserted by hand. A damaged tube end willrequire excessive force to be used. If this is the case you shouldcheck the tube is round and deburred before continuing. Check the‘O’ ring is not damaged. XPress fittings with plain male ends mustnot be used directly with capillary fittings, since heating willdamage the non-metallic parts.

Heat should not be applied to XPress fittings, directly or indirectly. They should be disconnected (where applicable) to avoid anypossible damage to non-metallic parts if they are to be used on asystem in conjunction with capillary fittings. Similarly, reconnection must not be considered until the heatedtubes have been allowed to cool. Use pipe clips to secure finishedinstallations and prevent vibration or movement.

Socket depths

SpacingAllow sufficient clearance around each fitting to allow press-fitjaws to be attached without hindrance.

Health and safety1. We recommend that eye protection is worn when operating allpressing tools.

2. Do not activate a pressing tool without a fitting in the jaws.

Note: When using power tools, great care must be taken at alltimes. Always refer to the manufacturers’ instructions for allmachines and tools you use. Please refer towww.pegleryorkshire.co.uk/SHE for further COSHH information.

43a. Noga hand tools. In order to remove any internal and externalburrs caused by the tube cutting operation, we recommend the useof the Noga deburring kit. For internal deburring of all sizes, werecommend the use of the TA143 and TA144 swivel blades used inconjunction with TA147 handle. For external deburring of 15, 18and 22mm tubes, we recommend the use of the TA145 used inconjunction with the TA146 Rotadrive holder and the TA147 handle.

4. If a deburrer is not available use a fine file to prepare the tube end.

5. If using plastic coated carbon steel system tube the plasticcoating must be removed from the socket depth of the fitting usingthe S115 stripping tool from the XPress accessories range. Selectthe correct size tool, fully insert the tube and twist the tool untilthe excess of plastic is completely detached

6. The tube must be fully inserted to the fitting until it meets thetube stop. Use a S110 XPress depth gauge or ruler to mark theinsertion (socket) depth of the fitting onto the tube – see table.

Jointing 15mm to 35mmPlease refer to the press-fit tool manufacturers instructions fordetailed operating and safety information before pressing joints.Pegler Yorkshire recommends both Novopress and Rems tools.

1. Keep all fittings in their bag prior to installation to ensure thelubrication does not dry out. Ensure the 'O' ring is seated correctlywithin the fitting socket.

2. Assemble the joint, ensuring the tube is inserted into the fittinguntil it meets the tube stop, using the insertion depth mark as avisual aid. Only when the tube reaches the tube stop should thepressing operation be undertaken.

3. Make the tool safe by isolating it from the power supply.

Select the correct jaws for the joint being made, checking that theyare free from damage. Attach the jaws, following the instructionsfor your particular press-tool, and reconnect the power supply when ready.

Insert the correctly sized jaws into the pressing tool and placethem over the bead at the mouth of the fitting. Ensure the jaw iscorrectly lubricated with Dri-slide lubricant (S135 see page 86).

4. A 90° angle between the tube and jaws must be maintainedwhen pressing all joints. This will ensure the integrity of the jointas well as protecting you from ‘kickback’. The pressing operationshould only be carried out when the tube is adequately supportedby brackets, not when the tube is suspended in the fitting socket alone.

5. Keep your hands safely away from the joint and press the triggeror button to start the jointing cycle. When the jaws fully enclosethe mouth of the fitting, the joint is complete. The jaw shouldthen be released from around the fitting. If all is in order, mark thejoint as complete.
