ACTIV8 DAY A ROARING SUCCESS 

 The Worthing High  School  annual Activ8 Day was  held  on   

Friday 5th  July 2013 with over 1000  students and  staff  taking 

part on a glorious day of sporting activity.  Tarring Community 

secured  their  first  ever Activ8 Day  success  last week with  a 

magnificent  overall  score  of  1120  points.    Xene  Aucock,         

Tarring’s Deputy Head Girl and Becky Sim, Tarring Prefect and 

Sports  Prefect,  are  pictured  below  being  presented with  the       

prestigious trophy by the PE Department.  Well done!

Activ8 Day – Friday 5th July    

Worthing High School held its annual Activ8 Day on Friday 5th July.  Forty family groups, representing each of the 

four communities  took part  in a carousel of activities  including bench ball, softball,  lacrosse, volleyball, hockey, 

handball, table tennis, rowing, basketball, dodge ball, 5‐a‐side football, ultimate Frisbee, Football, Tchoukball and 

tennis.  Family groups were looking to earn as many points as they could for their community through team work, 

participation, effort and competition.  Students also had the opportunity to be awarded separate certificates based 

on  the  legacy  of  London  2012:  these  values  included  Passion,  Belief,  Respect,  Honesty,  Teamwork  and                 

Determination.    There  was  a  real  sense  of  community  ethos  throughout  the  school  which  created  a  great              

atmosphere for students and staff alike and kept spirits high despite the very hot weather!  All four communities 

were fantastic but this years honours went to TARRING for the first time.  Congratulations!

PE  Sports Presentation and Achievement Evening 

Tuesday 9th July 2013 

The 2nd annual PE Presentation night  took place on Tuesday 9th  July at 

Worthing High  School  to  a  packed  audience  of  450  people.    The  guest 

speaker was none other than Olympian Pete Waterfield who delighted the 

crowd  with  stories  of  London  2012,  past  Olympics  and  his  medal           

successes. 

 

The PE department were proud to reward those who have represented the 

school  so  successfully  this  academic  year.  Students  were  awarded  a      

number  of  certificates,  engraved  trophies  and  medals  throughout  the        

evening as well as having  the  chance  to meet Pete and have  their photo 

taken with him.   

 

A number of Special Awards were given out on the night, which included 

‘Team of the Year’.   This award was presented to the sports team who have 

shown huge achievement,  commitment and passion  throughout  the year 

and  it  went  to  our  highly  successful  Ricochet  Dance  Company,                

pictured below with Pete Waterfield.

The evening was a huge success and will now become an annual event on the 

school calendar.  It was an excellent evening and demonstrated the huge impact 

sport and physical activity has for many of our students.  Congratulations to all 

those who  received  certificates and awards.   We  look  forward  to building on 

the success  from September.   Many  thanks  to all students, parents and carers 

for  attending  the  evening;  the PE department  look  forward  to  seeing you  all 

again next year.

Nick  Oxley  (10BCO)  has  been  selected  in  a  13 man  South  East    

England  squad  to  play  in  the  27th  Bunbury  ESCA  Under  15s  

Cricket  Festival,  to  be held  at Durham University,  from  21  to  26 

July.  As well as being the only Sussex based player picked to play 

at  the Bunbury Festival, Nick has been part of  the Sussex County    

Emerging Player Programme and has been to Dubai for a training 

camp in Easter and will travel to Sri Lanka in December for further 

elite  training.    Over  the  years,  the  English  Schools  Cricket            

Association  Bunbury  Festival  has  helped  discover  and  nurture 

many talented cricketers; 308 Bunbury’s have gone on to play First 

Class  cricket,  with  60  achieving  the  ultimate  honour  of                 

representing  England.    Nick  plays  for  the  Sussex  County  U15 

squad  and  plays  his  club  cricket  at Worthing  CC where  he  has    

broken  into  the  1st  team  this  season  and  taken  his  first wickets.  

Nick  said  “I  am very pleased with my  recent performances with 

the highlight being picked for SE England. I’ve worked very hard 

on  my  game  over  the  winter  and  feel  that  I  have  made  a          

breakthrough this year.”

Make Your Move Competition 

 

On Saturday 8th  June Ricochet  took part  in  the British Red Cross, Make Your Move Dance 

Competition.  The  girls  put  endless  hours  into  preparing  for  the  competition  both  raising 

money  and  rehearsing  the  dance.  The  group  performed  extremely  well  and  showed           

professionalism throughout the day and during the performance of their dance. At the end of 

the  night  Ricochet were  presented with  a  bronze  certificate  for  raising  over  £100  for  the      

British Red Cross  and were  also  awarded  the prize  for  ‘Best Group Dynamic’, which was    

truly deserved. Well done to all the girls who took part.

Super Swimmer Luke Moore represents Sussex 

Luke Moore 9TDS has been swimming for 5 years and swims with the Shiverers club team based 

in  Brighton  and Hove.   He  trains  11  hours  a week  often  putting  in  the  hours  before  school.        

Following a number of successful performances in the pool, Luke has been selected for the Sussex 

Seahawks swimming team which is a club formed of top swimmers from Shiverers and Atlantis 

swimming clubs.   Luke is currently placed 5th in his age group in Sussex and has made the South 

East regional squad for  team relay events.   He has been  lucky enough  to receive coaching from 

the likes of Michael Jamieson and David Carry who are Team GB / Olympic swimmers. He also 

competes for his club in the Division 1 of the National Arena Swimming League in London.  Luke 

and his Shiverers  team, won  the menʹs Brighton pier  to pier  race on Saturday 13th  July.   Luke 

achieved  a magnificent  3rd  place  in  his  age  group  at  the  South  Eastern  regional  open water   

championships  this weekend just gone at Westhampnett lake.  Well done Luke and we wish you 

all the best for the future.

George Green’s Table Tennis Diary 

 

Last week I played in my first ever competitive table tennis 

tournament,  the Worthing District Tournament, which was 

available for anyone, held  in Worthing.   I played very well 

and  got  to  the  final  only  dropping  one  game  however  I        

narrowly lost in the final; the score was 11‐9 10‐12 11‐9 11‐7. 

I had  two game points  in  the second but  it wasn’t  to be.    I 

am  still  am  very  pleased  I  got  to  the  final  in  my  first        

tournament and I hope to enter many more. Adding to this I 

now play  in  a men’s Worthing District Division  3 League

(where everyone has to start) and I hope to do very well and 

move up the ranks.   I would  like to win Division One next 

year and I hope to play for Sussex one day.

Golfer Nathan Longley hits the big time in Scotland.  

Two weeks ago Nathan Longley in 11TRM flew up to Scotland to play in Scottish Boys 

U16 at Porthlethen, near Aberdeen.   Nathan was 1 of 120 boys competing  in Scotland 

with  a  strong  national  and  international  field  and  finished  the  tournament  a  very     

creditable 5th place, bringing home the best score for a Great Britain & Ireland player; 

he was only 3 shots behind the French winner.  Nathanʹs golfing skills were truly tested 

at  times,  having  to  contend with  the  gusting  Scottish wind  and  rain,  but  he  stayed        

focused and played some amazing golf. After an opening round of 68, Nathan returned 

three rounds in the low 70s to card an aggregate score of level par for the four rounds.  

After 2 days of play, only the top 40 players went on to play another 36 holes to find a 

winner.   Nathan’s success in Scotland has firmly put him on the Sussex Golf radar and 

no doubt he will break into County teams after this magnificent result.  Nathan is off to 

Portugal in July to play in the Oceanico World Kids Golf Championship played on the 

Faldo course.   Nathan will have a couple of days  to acclimatise before playing  in  the 

three round competition.     Well done Nathan and we  look  forward  to  further success 

this summer!

Marc is aiming for Rio 2016  

Marc Charlesworth (9SSY) started archery in September 2010 at Worthing Archery Club and began competitive 

shooting  regularly  in  March  2012  with  his  first  ever  indoor  event  being  the  Sussex  County  Indoor          

Championships.   He won the Junior Gentlemen Recurve title in 2012 as well as breaking a number of County 

Records during  the  season. Marc  topped off a great 2012 by  claiming  the  Junior Master Bowman Award  in    

September.    In December, Marc  entered  the  Junior National  Indoor Championships  at  the Ricoh Centre  in    

Coventry and came 10th in his category.  This annual event is the third largest competition worldwide with 450 

archers  competing,  featuring  top  class  international  and Olympic  archers.   Marc  is  currently  ranked  1st  in     

Sussex for Boys Junior Recurve, joint 15th nationally for Under 18ʹs and is joint 2nd for the Under 14ʹs  category. 

He has been privileged  to represent Sussex  three  times  in  tournaments against Essex, Surrey and Hampshire 

and  trains 3  times per week  indoors or outdoors  to  improve his  technique.     Marc has continued  to progress 

well  during  2013  by  gaining  two  further  County  Record  scores  and  retaining  his  indoor  county  title  and         

recently competed at the Junior National Outdoor Championships at Lilleshall in Shropshire, the national home 

of Archery. He came an  impressive 2nd place for his category, missing the top prize by a mere 16 points. He 

didnʹt  let  this  faze  him  and  went  on  to  shoot  a  new  personal  best  metric  score  of  1229  at  the    Surrey          

Championships last weekend, gaining a further two County Record scores, a 1200 EAF Badge and he was the 

highest scoring archer for his age group. Marcʹs success has continued as he has just added the Sussex  County 

Outdoor  Junior Recurve Champion  title  at  the Sussex County Outdoor Championships on  20/21  July  to his 

achievements to date.   He is now focusing on the next tournament, the first Junior Masters Tournament to be 

held  for  the  top  level  junior  archers  in  the  UK  comprising  of  a  ranking  round  and  then  Head  to  Head          

elimination rounds. Marc aspires to represent GB at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and we wish him all the best!

Team Elite Celebration Finale 

 

Ellis Bubb 11HAB and Head Girl Neath Champion‐Weeks 

11HDB  have  been  actively  involved  in  the  Team  Elite    

programme    during 2012/13.  They have followed an elite 

sporting  schedule  focusing  on  psychological  training, 

physiological testing and physical training, all based at the 

University  of  Chichester.    Both  students  have  excelled 

during the      programme and have represented Worthing 

High School with pride and passion.  Well done to both of 

you  and  congratulations  on  your  achievements  within 

Team Elite!

Well done to ALL teams and players for a fantastic season, participating in both the District Leagues 

and  Tournaments  –  despite  the  often  unpredictable  British weather  causing  some  fixtures  to  be   

cancelled and/or re‐arranged.  Each Year Group Team had their individual successes and ‘ups and 

downs’; however,  I  am  extremely proud of  their  achievements,  commitment  and  enthusiasm  for 

every game – team spirit remained high and fair play  was displayed throughout.  Well done!

Olympic Legacy—alive and kicking!  

 

During week of 24th June to 28th June, National School Sports Week  

once again came to the playing fields of Worthing High School.   

Tutor Time Challenge On  their  designated  morning,  each  tutor  group  participated  in  a  Tutor 

Group Challenge out on  the school field during  form  time. The Challenge 

consisted  of  10 multi  skill  based  activities  including Giant  Skip, Hockey 

Dribble, Target Shooting, Relay Race   and Tchoukball Catch to name but a 

few, with every student electing  to undertake at  least one  ‘challenge’.   All 

staff who  experienced  this  event agreed  that  this was an  excellent way  to 

start the school day!

Olympic Festival Week All through the week in an adapted PE timetable, pupils took part in a 

carousel  of  five  of  the  twenty  six  Olympic  disciplines;  these  were      

Lacrosse,  Tchoukball,  Table  Tennis,  Volleyball  and  Hockey.  The       

students were  placed  in  to  teams  at  the  start  of  the week  and  then     

during  their  lessons engaged  in a  little  ‘friendly’ competition with  the 

winning  team  for each Community  receiving a prize  for  their efforts. 

The pupils all thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to experience new, 

to  some, and unfamiliar,  to many,  sports  that may not have  received 

quite  the showcasing  they deserved  throughout  the  two weeks which 

made up the London 2012 Olympiad. With so much sporting talent on 

show all through the week, might Worthing High school have a future 

Olympic Gold Medallist walking amongst its corridors? Only time will 

tell.

James Colburn visits WHS 

 

Ex‐student  James Colburn visited Worthing High School during enrichment week 

to  speak  to GCSE PE  and BTEC  Sport  students  about  his  life  as  a  racing driver.  

James races in the Renault UK Clio Cup Series and is currently ranked third in the         

standings.   James brought in his car, his trophies and his racing overalls to delight 

and inspire students.  Students were able to sit in the car whilst James talked them 

through what it takes to drive a highly specialised car and the discipline required to 

race at a top level whilst managing a day job during the week. 

Girls Cricket 

Worthing High  School  entered  both  the U15  league  and 

U13  girl’s  outdoor  leagues  this  year.    The  U15  team        

finished  runners‐up  in  their  league with  some  excellent 

performances  with  the  bat  and  ball.    The  U13  team 

(pictured  right) finished  1st  in  their  league.   Throughout 

their games Ella, Shania, Tammy, Lauryn and Skye were 

excellent when  bowling whilst Caitlyn, Erin, Emma  and 

Florence  were  indispensable  with  the  bat.    The  girls      

competed strongly in the semi‐final; a last wicket stand by 

Ella  and  Erin  with  6’s  and  4’s  off  every  ball  was  not 

enough  to  put  them  into  the  final;  the  final  score  was 

Oathall  111  v WHS  98.   Well  done  to  all  students who 

have taken part in cricket this season.

Flag for the Future 

Community Flag Competition 

 

The community flag design competition was a great success.  The PE department 

ran a competition for a flag design that represented each of the communities.   We 

were  looking  for  a  flag  of  the  future  –  something  special.  After  many  hours         

deliberating with Community Leaders, the PE department and Sport Prefects – the 

successful winners were announced: 

 

Broadwater: winning entry designed by Greg Vernon (BDH) 

Heene: winning entry by Dolly Culver and HDB 

Salvington: winning entry designed by Mr Smith and SJS 

Tarring: winning entry designed by Munireh Lane (TAN)

Lewis Strotten Shoots for GB Lewis Strotten  (10BJG) has  just been  selected by Great Britain  to  join  the elite  Junior Shooting  squad.   Lewis only   

started .22 target shooting at Aldingbourne Target Shooting club in September 2008.  He quickly showed he had huge 

potential to shoot well and entered his first competitions against local clubs, shooting at indoor ranges at 25 yards.  In 

March 2011, Lewis  shot his first 100/100  in a head  to head  competition at Chichester Rifle club and  then won  the    

prestigious southern area junior Chanctonbury Cup.  On the back of this success, Lewis started shooting 50m on an 

outdoor range which is the standard distance for commonwealth and Olympic shooting. Lewis shot the junior British 

Championships  at  Bisley  2011  and  on  his  first  attempt,  came  3rd  place  in  the  British Under  16  Championship.         

Following  this,  he  was  selected  for  the  Sussex  County  Junior  team,  whilst  continuing  to  shoot  and  train  at               

Aldingbourne.  After competing at Bisley again in August 2012, Lewis was invited by the Great Britain Junior Squad 

to train with them due to achieving the minimum qualifying score of 571/600 for firing 60 shots at 50m in 50 minutes.  

Joining the Great Britain Junior Squad, Lewis has now begun training in three positional shooting (standing, kneeling 

and prone) and precision air rifle.   In March this year, Lewis became the Sussex Under 16 Champion for  indoor 25 

yard  prone  shooting. He will  also  be  competing  for  the first  time  at Bisley  in August  at  the  Junior  International 

Matches. Lewis said “I’ve learnt so much already from my involvement in the GB squad and am very excited about 

my future.”

Year 8 Boys Cricket Team reach District Semi Finals After  three superb wins over Durrington, Chatsmore and TLA in the league, the boys marched in to the District semi 

finals  at  the  first  time  of  asking.   With  some  excellent  performance with  the  bat  and  ball,  the  boys were  full  of          

confidence and only Shoreham Academy stood in their way en route to the final.  On a windy afternoon away in the 

depths of Shoreham,  the WHS boys were up against  it  from  the  start as  the Shoreham attack  ripped  through our    

batting order with ruthless efficiency.  Ollie Dengate scored a magnificent 18 before  a Yorker took out middle stump 

and sent him back to the Pavilion.  Ollie also took a prized wicket in their Sussex opener but it wasn’t enough and we 

had to admit defeat against a far superior side.  However, over the season, all of the boys performed with spirit and 

determination with some notable  performances by Ben Colburn, Cam Blackburn and Kavan Sahota.

Leadership in PE  

 

Sport  leadership  students were delighted  to welcome Year  5  students  to  sporting  sessions 

throughout this term and last term.  The Year 10 students lead a number of sessions in kwik 

cricket,  lacrosse, softball, handball, basketball, bench ball, sitting volleyball, and  tchoukball.

Exhibition Cricket Match on a sunny evening 

 

The Year 9 boys cricket  team played  the Year 10  team on a beautiful summers evening 

last week, umpired by Mr. Gill and Mr. Morris.  The game had been hyped up for over a 

week and both teams were sure to produce some fine performances with the bat and ball.  

It came down to the last over but the Year 10 just edged out their opponents in a thrilling 

match.    Notable  performances  from  Nick  Oxley,  Sam  Hyde,  Kavan  Sahota  and  Ella 

Bourne added a touch of sparkle to the evening’s play.  Well done to all involved! 

Thank you to all the students and staff for 

your commitment, passion and enthusiasm to 

School sport this year.  We look forward to more 

sporting success from September.
