The cleric thanked the Eastern Cape lead-ership for inviting him to come to theseshores to experience what he called “a deepconnection” with the motherland, Africa.Rev. Jackson applauded South Africa for
20 years of a vibrant democracy and threesuccessive free and fair elections and a sta-ble government.“I am impressed with your democracy.
Twenty-years later, theANChasa stable gov-ernment. Your constitution allows freedomfor women and people of colour,” said the in-ternational Human Rights activist.“This is however, just 20 years. We are in
themorningof thenewbe-ginning. Things will notbe done overnight, “ saidJackson. He added that South Af-
rica must somehow learnto democratise the econo-
my like she did in politics and ensure thatthere was equality.“Remember, the layers of apartheid were
not even skin deep. The layers of apartheidwere bone-layer deep. They go to the bone-marrow.Meaning that it is going to take timeto overcome the racial apartheid, education-al apartheid, land apartheid and access tocapital apartheid,” said Rev. Jackson.Rev. Jackson said equalitymeant equal ac-

BUILDING construction company PPC Ce-ment hasmade a difference in the lives of thepupils of JarvisGqamlanaPrimarySchool inNew Brighton.
The company rebuilt the caretaker’s housewhich was demolished in a fire during a bur-glary a few years ago.Vandals had taken advantage of the school
since the fire. The school had been broken in-to many times and that had adversely affect-ed teaching and learning, according to prin-cipal Ndiphiwe Ngqawanawho thanked PPCCement for the gesture.“This R100 000 renovation hasmade a huge
difference to the school. When the buildingwas burnt down, we were the victims of van-dalism. The state of the school made it diffi-cult for effective teaching and learning totake place. Thiswas a pain in the neck seeingthieves coming in to do what they liked inthe school,” said a delighted Ngqawana. The two-bedroomhousewith a kitchen and
lounge, was now in a state where someonecould live in it. According to Ngqawana, themood for both the learners and teachers hadimproved as a result.“Itwas an eye-sore to all of us andmembers
of the community” he said.PPC Cement Risk Manager Hugo Baden-
horst said theywere touched by the plea theyreceived from the Metro Community Devel-opment Forum about the condition of theschool“Having built the school’s bathroom be-
fore, we decided to come and assist as partof our Corporate Social Investment (CSI)Project,” said Badenhorst, adding that theyused R100 000 to renovate the four-roomedhouse to make it habitable.“They (PPC Cement) have brought back
the good image of the school. The parents ofthe school are very happy. There is so muchpositive outlook here now that we foresee apositive growth in the school,” said SchoolGoverning Body Chairperson Yaliwe PapuAn overjoyed Papu admitted that this was
their first successful project as the SGB. Shesaid they were hoping a lot more thingswould be coming to the school.”We’d like to urge more parents to bring
their children to the school,” said Papu.Mzwandile Gwaqu of the Community De-
velopment Forum said they would workhand in glove with the SGB and members ofthe community to ensure that they lookedwell after the school. He said they would pro-tect its beautiful image.

WALMER High School learnerstaking part in the Masifunde YouthChoir Comptition could make theirschool R100 000 richer in the not toodistant future.
The group of singers and dancershave been announced as one of thefive finalists of the 2014 My SchoolSing and Dance Competition.
The winners of this nationalcompetition will be announced onThursday November 27.
“We received over 100 entriesand loved viewing every one ofthem. Our judges were impressedby the talent, innovativeness andbeautiful voices from all overSouth Africa - we really have amaz-ing talent in our SA schools,” saidMasifunde’s Shan Khan.
After long discussions and de-bates, according to Khan, the judg-es decided on the five finalists andannounced them as follows; CurroHillcrest Christiana Academyfrom KwaZulu-Natal, NelspruitPrimary School (Mpumalanga),Riebeek College Girls’ High (East-ern Cape), Somerset College (West-ern Cape) and Walmer HighSchool’s Masifunde Youth Choirfrom Nelson Mandela Bay.
“Being chosen among the five fi-nalists in the country means thatthis choir is special.
“They are one of the best in thecountry. And who knows, theymight bring the title home,” saidMasifunde Fund-Raising and Com-munications Head Edem Foli.
According to the organisers, thefive finalists must compete inRound 2 of the competition for theGrand Prize.
Walmer Masifunde Choir Facili-tator Zena Bally believes the choirhas the ability to bring the title toWalmer/Gqebera.
“They are very dedicated. Wemeet every Monday to Friday af-ter school to work on our soundwhich is a combination of HipHop, House, Gospel, African Tra-ditional and European Classics. We also do Latin German,” saidBally proudly, adding thatthere’s a lot of raw-talent amongWalmer township’s youth.“They’ve got beautiful voices,”she added.
To bring out the best in them,Bally said, she works with a star-right-system which is a positive re-enforcement system.
The choir rendered two beautifulpieces for PE Express Indaba.
Without a doubt, these youngWalmer township musicians couldget anything between positions oneand three and bring home at leastR50 000 second and third prize-awards if not the R100 000 grand-prize.

THEinauguralTOPS@SPARWhisky&WineJazzFes-tival was a hit with Nelson Mandela Bay residents, asmorethan1500peopleturnedoutfortheeventonSatur-day night.
NangozaJebeHall inNewBrightonwastransformedinto an upmarket urban jazz lounge, with stylishlydressed visitors enjoying the musical line-up and sam-pling some of the finest wines, whiskys and finger foodsfrom 60 of the retailer’s biggest suppliers.
SPAR Eastern CapemanagingdirectorCon-rad Isaac said he wasdelighted at the successof the debut festival andpromised that it wouldreturn to the Port Eliza-beth township nextyear.
“Nobody worriesabout bringing thiskind of event to thetownships. From aSPAR and TOPS pointof view, we were thefirst into these areas, the first to recognisetheir potential, whileothers simply tried tofollow suit.”
With 86 outlets across the province, the TOPS brandis now the biggest retail liquor group in the EasternCape.
“Today is about giving back to the community bybringing some quality wines and whiskys and givingthem the chance to enjoy some top local and nationaljazz.”
And enjoy the music they did, with PE bands TakeNote and Ricochet getting the crowd on their feet withoriginal compositions and reggae and R&B-influencedcover versions respectively.
But the highlight of the evening was when UmhloboWenene’s master of ceremonies, DJ Pastor, introducedJohannesburg-based act The Muffinz.
The metro gig was the group’s first stop back on
South African soil, after performing at the Apollo Thea-tre in New York and a two-week whistle-stop tour ofNorway.
Lead electric guitarist and vocalist Simphiwe ‘Simz’Kulla said his five-piece group had literally comestraight off the plane, after arriving at OR Tambo earli-er that day.
East London-born Kulla said it was great to be backin the Eastern Cape.
“It’s always lovelyto come home. I’mXhosa, so PE is closeenough to my home-town, and I loved thefact that the venuewas so full.”
Audiences weregiven a taste of the ti-tle track from theirlatest album, #Do-WhatYouLove,which is due for re-lease shortly, as wellas familiar trackssuch as Soundcheckand Umsebenzi Wen-doda.
“I’m personallyvery passionate about little festivals like this that reallyfocus on the arts,” he said.
“As a working nation, we need to be as diverse as pos-sible and not pander to the mainstream. We’ve gotmany cultures and we need to preserve that.
“Seeing SPAR invest in this is lovely because it pro-motes culture on a bigger level.”
Kulla said making a great wine or whisky was an artform in itself and, much like music, was all about find-ing the right notes and harmony.
“Wecall oursound‘eclecticsoul’becauseit’s literallyfive different guys from different backgrounds who allgrew up listening to different things like reggae, hip-hop, pop and a cappella.
“It’s crazy, we bring that together and make this soultrip music. And it works.” – INDABA REPORTER

“The Youth Dialogue was attended by 600young people and the dinner by over 200 pro-fessional and business people. It brought peo-ple from the Bay together – all because oneyoung person thought it could be done. Theysaid we couldn’t do it but we did,” she said.
“My mother started the Social Work De-partment at Unitra (known as WSU), and be-came the second Black female professor atNMMU. For someone that grew up in a 4-bed-room house in Mdantsane, she proves to meand many others you can be that which youwant to be,” added Mashologu-Kuse.
Madonsela praised Mashologu-Kuse in herspeech at NMMU, saying the country neededmore young women who aspire to greatness.
“When I was invited to be part of this event,I felt the need to comply because of the greatinspiration a mother can be to her daughter. We need more young women and men likeKazeka who are vibrant and courageous tohonour unsung heroes like her own mother,”said Madonsela.
Madonsela also spoke about her role ingovernment, saying that Chapter 9 institu-tions needed youth participation and thatleaders today needed to be more transparentand accountable to the youth.
Mashologu-Kuse, who is also the owner ofDaring Media, said her company had shownthat there are young people that deeply careabout this country and that there was powerin an assembly of young people coming to-gether.
“We are all about going there – where peo-ple are afraid to go and talk about the issuesthat everyone talks about behind closeddoors,” Mashologu-Kuse said.

PUBLIC and private partnerships in actionare key to the effective development of thepeople, especially the youth.
This was said by the Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality’s Deputy Executive Mayor,Thando Ngcolomba, before handing over soc-cer kits and training equipment to the Uiten-hage-based soccer team, United Brothers.
Deputy Mayor Ngcolomba handed over thekit and equipment to United Brothers at therequest of Makhetha Development Consult-ants, an engineering company that boughtthe kit and equipment.
Makhetha Development Consultants is oneof the companies doing engineering work for
the Municipality, more especially in the fieldof sanitation solutions. The company becameaware of the team when they were doingwork for the Municipality in Uitenhage,KwaLanga and Rosedale. As part of givingback to the community, they approached thecommunity to check which project withinthe community they could support. The com-munity unanimously agreed that theyshould support the local soccer team by pro-viding soccer kits and seeing to other needs.
Not only did the company decide to sup-port the team, but to adopt it. This donationforms part of many things United Brothershave received from the company, includingcash donations. The company has also assist-ed in levelling their uneven playing field.
The Deputy Mayor was accompanied by
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Sportand Recreation Portfolio Chairman,Nomamerika Soul, and the South AfricanFootball Association (SAFA), Nelson Mande-la Bay President, Monde Mhletywa.
The Deputy Executive Mayor said that gov-ernment was under pressure to deliver toeverybody with limited resources. “As gov-ernment we cannot do it alone. It is honestpartnerships like this that will benefit ourpeople, especially the poorest of the poor andthe youth. These young men are the futureof our country. If we do not take care of themnow, we are killing the future of the city andthe country as a whole,” said Deputy MayorNgcolomba.
“I call on other private companies, espe-cially those that get work from the Munici-
pality and government, to plough back in theareas where they work. It is not only a re-sponsibility, it is a noble thing to do,” saidthe Deputy Mayor. Club President, StanleyTaku, said: “The seed that the company hasplanted in these young men will grow intosomething bigger one day. I also want tothank the Municipality for giving work tothis company so that it can find some re-sources within its budget to support us as ateam. Blessed is the hand that gives, God willbless them more,” said Taku.
The team is playing under the Langa/Rosedale Football Association that is affiliat-ed to SAFA. They were runners-up in theirleague last season. “This support is a clearmessage to the players that we must win theleague this season,” said Taku.
