THE National Commission-er of the South African Po-lice Service (SAPS) Gener-al Riah Phiyega visitedNelson Mandela Bay last
Thursday to hand over new vehiclesto the local Police for better serviceto the communities and more visiblepolicing.
General Phiyega, who was accom-panied by an entourage of senior po-lice officials from the province, start-ed in Motherwell where she handedover 32 vehicles to the K9 Unit, FlyingSquad, Serious and Violent Crimesunits as well as the Child Protectionand Sexual Offences Unit.
Phiyega said the hand-over was inthe spirit of the Batho Pele principle(putting others first) by addressingthe community’s need for a safe area.
She said the vehicles would en-hance visible policing in the commu-nity.
She also visited the home of the two-year old boy who was raped and mur-dered by a 16-year old boy in Soweto-on-Sea as well as the KwaDwesi Shop-ping Centre.
“I have come to let you (the people)know that as the police we care foryour safety. You must also take care(especially during the festive sea-son),” said Gen. Phiyega.
She added that the police were do-ing their utmost to fight crime in themetro and province but were dis-turbed by the shortage of vehicles.
She said she hoped that with thenew vehicles a lot more arrests wouldbe made.
“We have come to hand over thesevehicles allocated to the province inorder to enhance the service delivery
capacity of stations and units in theprovince.
According to provincial policespokesperson Brigadier MarindaMills, General Phiyega spoke to thefamily of the deceased boy and gavethem hope. Gen. Phiyega also con-gratulated the police for their investi-gation which led to the arrest and im-prisonment of the perpetrator.
On the topic of the 16 days of activ-ism against women and childrenabuse campaign, the national com-missioner called everybody, and es-pecially men, to stop the scourgewhenever it reared its ugly head.
General Phiyega was welcomed bythe residents at KwaDwesi ShoppingComplex as she mingled with themamong the shops. She also posed withmany residents who wanted to havephotos taken with her on their cell-phones.
“I am so happy I took the picturewithher. I loveher. She’s avery toughwoman but so nice,” said NomhleTsengiwe (80) of KwaDwesi Exten-sion.
“I am happy she came. I hope thenumber of rapes and abuse will droptremendously,” said Zukiswa Mata(42) from Township Zwide.
Mkhululi Gqirana (60) ofKwaMagxaki was not lucky. He couldnot speak to General Phiyega “andtell her to instruct police to protect usfrom our own children (thugs). Other-wise, we’re going to take the law intoour own hands,” Gqirana said
Also not lucky was Simphiwe Jonas(32), a police reservist of Kwazakhele.
“I wanted to ask her when the thereservists are going to get full-timeemployment. I’ve been a reservist forsix years whilst I have passed matric.Age is against someofus.Weneedem-ployment,” said Jonas.
