the next generation of entrepreneurs.
AlanKnott-Craig, an alumnus of theNelsonMandela Metropolitan University (NMMU)and founder of several technology companies,has undertaken to over the next 10 years helpstudents from this university realize theirbusiness dreams.Master’s and doctoral students in computer
science and information technologywill from2016 be able to apply for a fellowship of R100
000, with which they can start their own busi-nesses.
With such support Knott-Craig aims to es-tablish a network of entrepreneurs. “Peoplewho can create their own wealth, will re-in-
vest in the ecosystem where they started,”Knott-Craig explained.“This is the principle on which Silicon Val-
ley, America’s technological centre, is based.If we want to bring the same movement toSouth Africa, we should follow their exam-ple.”The fellowship, however,whichwill bepaid
by the non-profit organizationHappimoNPC,will specifically help postgraduate students.“It is important to complete postgraduatestudies, especially in computers and technol-ogy. In this industry there are many thingsyou cannot learn in your job.“We would also rather cultivate self-reliant
entrepreneurs as employers, because newbusinesses create jobs and boost the econo-my.”
NMMU was his first choice for the fellow-ship, Knott-Craig said.“NMMU has a diverse group of postgradu-
ate students. The future of Africa’s technolog-ical entrepreneurship...needs women andother racial groups. NMMU can deliver theseleaders.”Prof. Jean Greyling, Head of Department of
NMMU Computing Sciences, welcomedKnott-Craig’s support and confidence.“The fellowship will encourage students to
consider postgraduate studies, and our coun-try’s economy needs more master’s and doc-toral students.”The first applications will be collected by
the various departments early next year. Thefirst recipients will be announced in April2016.

Residents of the metro will have started notic-ing significant improvements to thewasteman-agement services of late, as a result of the Met-ro’s Integrated Waste Management Plan(IWMP) project being undertaken by GIBB,South Africa’s leading black-owned engineer-ing firm.
According to Walter Fyvie, EnvironmentalScientistatGIBB,andProjectManager,comple-tion is scheduled for late 2015. “The NMBMhasprioritised waste management, and the four-year implementation process was initiated bythe City in 2011,” Fyvie said.Plans are currently being formulated for the
Nkonkobe Local Eastern Cape Municipality,and the local municipalities of Mandeni andNquthu in KZN.
Thekeyobjectives of theNMBM IntegratedWaste Management Plan are to:
) Improve future planning of waste infra-structure
) Provide an enabling environment for recy-cling
)Eradicate the need for a fortnightly collec-tion services
) Improve infrastructure management)Reduce illegal dumping) Improve public awareness, and) Improve public perception.“The deadline for the National Waste Man-
agementStrategy targets is 2016;howevermanyof these targets have proved unrealistic and be-yond the reach of most authorities. Diwali is the Festival of Light and its beau-ty is inherent. Loud bangs form no part of it.GuyFawkeshasnorelevance inSouthAfricaand it is questioned why it is “celebrated” atall.
It has become increasingly evident thatreckless individuals are using both “events”to utilise fireworks in a particularly anti-so-cial manner.
This includes ignoring any restrictionsand causing damage to property, as well asterrifying communities and animals.
According to Christine Kuch from The Na-tional Council of SPCAs, “The SPCA does notenforce the laws relating to the use of fire-works. The regulations, both local and na-tional, are watertight.
“The Explosives Act is enforced by theSAPS to whom matters of concern need to bereported. This Act covers sale of fireworks,as well as issues relating to the discharge offireworks in public places. Local by-laws –which vary - regulate the discharge of fire-works on private property. “In some Munici-palities, permits are required; in other areasthere is dispensation for Diwali betweenspecified times.”
Be aware of pets’ sensitivityAnyone with an animal is requested to be
responsibleandtoensure theanimal’s safetyand comfort. The hearing of animals is farmore acute and sensitive than the hearing ofa human. If a dog can hear a grasshopper eat,imagine what a firework sounds like.
Stay with your pets. Keep them indoors. Ifan animal is sensitive by nature, then con-sultyourveterinarian foradvice.Donotgivemedication intended for humans to animalsand above all, ensure that animals are not indanger of harming themselves if they bolt –even indoors - or react when a firework isdischarged in the area. Despite regulationsand appeals for calm, this can occur.

IN a major boost to the developingocean economy in South Africa, mer-SETA is to provide R30 million overthe next three years to NelsonMande-la Metropolitan University to, amongothers, establishaBachelorofEngine-ering Technology in Marine Enginee-ring degree.
This is part of merSETA’s contribu-tion to the strategic Operation Phaki-sa initiative of government, which fo-cuseson the“blue” economybyunloc-king the economic potential of thecountry’s oceans.
“Not only will this agreement allowfor the generation of new qualificati-ons in the developing sector ofmarineengineering, but it also allows for thedevelopment of TVET curricula, aswell as creating progression forTVETlearners to university in the marinesector,” said merSETA CEO Dr Ray-mond Patel.
“The investment by merSETA de-monstrates their confidence inNMMUandwill enable the universityto source top experts in themarine en-gineering field to teach, support andgrow students in the maritime indus-try, increase research for naval archi-tecture and ship engineering, as well
as establish the NMMU as a worldclass maritime university,” saidNMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof DerrickSwartz.
This agreement will also open upnew job opportunities for partici-pants.
TheNMMUhas completed the initi-al design of the academic programmefor the new Marine Engineering de-gree andwill now follow formal proce-dures forapprovalvia theDepartmentof Higher Education and Training.
The new course will include modu-les suchasnaval architecture andma-rine automation. It is envisaged thenew degree will open in 2017.

THE Bianca Blood Drive during Novemberis both an initiative and legacy in honourof Miss PE 2010 Bianca-Anne Harper Agher-dien, who lost her life last year in a head-oncollision.
The initiative was implemented by herfamily, and is inspired by Bianca’s willing-ness to always reach out to other people.
Bianca’s father Denzyl Harper describesBianca as being clever and very hard work-ing from a very young age. “As a kid sheloved playing a teacher and in Primary andHigh School she did very well in academ-ics.”
After school she studied at the NelsonMandela Metropolitan University, whereshe studied towards a Masters Degree inPharmacy.
Soon after she finished university, she wascrowned Miss PE 2010, and last year she gotmarried to her husband Anver Agherdien.
Bianca over the years has affected manypeople in a positive manner, and by creatingthe drive, her family wants to continue do-ing good for others in Bianca’s name.
The family urges Nelson Mandela Bay andsurrounds to donate blood this Novemberfor the South African Blood Bank, as Decem-ber is coming and blood is always short atthis time of the year.

THEY may be from different genera-tions, but last week the boys from theGreyJuniorSchoolshowedthattheyunderstood senior citizens and theirdefinition of good music.
Led by their band director, JeffTaylor, the school’s musicians host-ed senior citizens from different oldage homes and churches in Port Eliz-
abeth. The school’s senior citizenday is an annual event that first tookplace in 2011, as part of the school’soutreach programme.
Foranhourandahalf, theboysen-tertain attendees with their instru-mental renditions of classic ‘goldenoldies’. On the day, the musical num-bers provided an air of nostalgia thathad many of the senior citizens ontheir feet.
According to Irene Burke, one of
the ladies who attended the school’ssenior citizen day, if she could havestayed for more musical numbers,she would.
“They are so talented and theyplayed fantastically. It was a suchmemorable day”, said Burke, whowas dressed to the nines. “Wordscannot describe how much I enjoyedmyself,” she concluded.
What made the difference to thisconcert, was the unique way in
which each musical item was an-nounced. Before the band started anew song, Taylor would launch intoa story about what each item meantto the older folk.
The rendition of the 1961 sound-track of Breakfast at Tiffany’s,“Moon River”, made the crowd espe-cially teary, as it allowed for the rem-iniscing of years passed.
The crowd could not get enough ofthe four young boys who borrowed
their voices to the item and was ex-tremely impressed with the effortsmade by Taylor.
Also in attendance was LeonBrainers, who commented on howyoung the music made him feel.
“Forget the fact that it was chil-dren playing this beautiful music,the music itself just takes you back.These children will never knowwhat they have done for us,” saidBrainers, full of smiles.

HAAR bleekwit vel is aan ’n “tiener-fase” toegeskryf en die alewige moeg-heid was nie genoeg om gevaarligtete laat flikker nie.
Toe kom die nuus wat Chanel We-wege nie eens geweet het sy moetvrees nie: sy het twee weke van haarlewe oor.
Só vertel Wewege (28) in haarboek, Leukaemia Unveiled, wat haarjarelange stryd met bloedkanker be-skryf.
Teen die tyd wat sy op 17-jarige ou-derdom dié K-woord gehoor het, wassy reeds ses maande siek. “Daar wasbaie simptome voor dit, maar ek hetdit geïgnoreer, want ek het nie ver-moed dat dit ernstig was nie,” het sygesê. “Al het ek baie geslaap en bleekgeword, het mense gedink dit wasnet ’n tienerfase.”
Sy het eers die erns van die saakbesef toe sy een oggend met ’n skerppyn in haar rug wakker word. “Ditwas so seer dat dit my laat skree het.Toe het my ouers met my na die dok-ter gejaag.”
Die nuus oor kanker het ’n halfuurna haar bloedtoetse gekom. “Vir ’nmaand was ek letterlik stomgeslaanvan die skok. Ek kon nie verstaanhoekom só iets met my moes gebeurnie.”
Die chemoterapie wat kort daarnagevolg het, het haar hulpeloos gelaat.“Elke dag moes ek deur verskillendetoetse met dik, groot naalde gaan. Ekkon later niks self doen nie, maar isrondgedra van die een bed na die an-der.”
Vir Wewege was een van die ergstedinge die feit dat haar hare weens diechemoterapie uitgeval het. “Ek koneers nie vir myself in die spieël kyknie. Later het ek dit aanvaar, want
ek het geweet dit gaan darem weerteruggroei.”
Vir die jaar wat sy in ’n hospitaal-bed moes deurbring, het haar ma,Shireen, elke aand by haar in die ka-mer geslaap.
“Ek het my ouma, Shirley, watsoos ’n tweede ma vir my was, in die-selfde jaar verloor – ook aan kanker.Sy het lewer- en longkanker gehadwat deur haar hele lyf versprei het.”
Wewege is sedert 2005 in remissie,nadat sy ’n beenmurgskenking vanhaar negejarige boetie ontvang het.
Deur die hele stryd het Wewege ’ndagboek gehou – wat later in haarboek omskep sou word. “Ek het elkedag se ervarings neergeskryf tot eklater te pap was en nie meer konskryf nie.”
Nadat haar pa in 2012 oorlede is,het sy besluit om haar notas byme-kaar te skraap en ’n boek te skryf,wat sy aan haar pa opgedra het.
“Toe die boek gepubliseer word,was dit asof ’n berg van my skouersaf is. Ek kon my storie vir mense ver-tel sonder om in trane uit te bars.
“Ek weet my pa sou baie trotswees,” het sy bygevoeg. “Met diéboek wil ek ander kankerlyers voor-berei vir wat op hulle wag – maarook hoop bied.
“Ek wil ook hê almal moet weethoe belangrik dit is om bloed teskenk. Ek is so dankbaar vir mensewat bloedskenkers is, want hulle hetdeel in my genesing gehad.”
Sy het nooit ’n matriekafskeid ge-had of die lewe van ’n normale 18-ja-rige gehad nie, maar sy gryp nouhaar tweede kans met albei handeaan.
“Ek lewe nou asof elke dag mylaaste dag is. Al het die dokters gesêek moet dit rustig vat, kan ek nie netin ’n hoekie gaan sit en kyk hoe dielewe verbyvlieg nie.”

THE Grey High School u/14A waterpoloteam recently concluded the season in a fan-tasticway bywinning the ITECGreyCollegeWaterpolo tournament in Bloemfontein.
On day 1 they breezed past the ITEC invi-tation team by 22 goals to nil before goingon to defeat Northwood High by 15 goals to1.
Day 2 saw them account for both KES (9-3)and a very physical Jeppe side by 6 goals to2.
Those four wins resulted in them endingtop of their pool and set up a quarter-finalwith St Albans, from Pretoria. The Greyboys were in a clearly bullish mood and to-tally outclassed their opponents en route toa 12 -2 victory.
The semi-final was against St John’s Col-lege, from Johannesburg, it was a nail-bitingaffair with the teams not letting each otherout of sight. Grey turned 3-1 up before St
John’s hit twice in quick succession to levelthe match at 3-a-piece.
Two great goal face passes by Ricky Kingenabled Matt Easton to gain the advantageand they led 5-3 going into the final minute.A penalty concluded proceedings and hand-ed Grey a 6-4 victory.
The final was played against the tourna-ment favourite side- Clifton. The first chuk-ka saw them stutter and falter and a generallack of composure resulted in them trailingby 2 goals to 1.
The Grey boys regrouped brilliantly at thebreak and goals by Reece Audie, Ricky Kingand Matthew Easton, who scored 4 goals, putthem in a 6-2 lead.
Fantastic dogged defence kept the Cliftononslaught at bay and they deservedly wonthe match 6- 2. Matthew Easton was awardedthe Forward of the Tournament award witha tournament haul of 21 goals.
The boys were fine ambassadors both inand out of the water and Ricky King collect-ed the ITEC trophy on behalf of the team.

POWER-LIFTING twice his weight seems tobe all in a day’s fun for Yonela Mbembe (16),whowill be attempting toqualify to takepartinnext year’sWorldBenchPressChampion-ship later in the month.
Mbembe, a grade 10 pupil at the NewtonTechnical High School in Port Elizabeth, on-ly took up power lifting earlier this year,when an injury prevented him from playingrugby for the remainder of the season.
He competed for the first time in April,whenheonlytookpart inthebenchpressdis-cipline.
Withabodyweightofonly68kgat thetime,Mbembe benched a staggering 120kg.
Hesaidhehadimmediately lovedthesportanddecided thathewanted toachievehisEPcolours.
In order to do this, he had to do three com-petitions at different levels. The next compe-titionwas held onAugust 29 inGeorge at theAgriculturalShowGroundsagainstWesternProvince. Yonela did a bench press of 125kg,which placedhim first in his sub-junior divi-sionof74kg.HealsobroketheEPrecordwithhis bench press at this competition.
Then after only two months of training he
took part in the Eastern Cape Bench PressChampionship on October 24. He then man-aged to break his own EP record by 12.5kg,benching 137.5kg.
Yonela will be off to Johannesburg wherehewill compete intheSABenchPressCham-pionships on November 21 to qualify for theWorld Bench Press Championship that willbe held in Potchefstroom next year.
“Iwanttoqualifyfortheworldchampsandthen I want to get a gold medal,” a confidentMbembe said.
He trains every Monday to Friday for anhour-and-a-half a day. “I think I enjoy thesport, because I seem to be quite good at it.It alsoprovidesaway inwhich I canset goalsfor myself and challenge myself.”
Mbembecurrentlyweighs69kgandhewillturn 17 just before the national champion-ship later this month.
He says he does not follow a specific dietat this stage. “I am lucky, I basically eatwhatI want,” laughed Mbembe.
He said his favourite subjects at schoolwere business studies and technical engi-neering.Hehopestobecomeapersonaltrain-er after school.
“But first let me get that gold medal at theworld champs, and then let’s see where thatleads me.”

THE NMMUMadibaz continued their domi-nation of local football when they drew 1-1against old foes Caledonians in the Port Eliz-abeth Football Association league final, toclaim their second consecutive champions’title earlier this month.
The university’s premier side did enoughin the final to take a three-point win in theleague and add the title to their list ofachievements, which included winning theSafa Nelson Mandela Bay regional leaguepromotion championships.According to Madibaz football manager,
Mark Tommy, these successes needed to beseen in the context of a long and demandingcompetitive calendar that his students hadto navigate.
“The Madibaz have had the most domi-nant and successful teams in the Pefa lea-gues this year. But while local rivalry is im-portant, it is by no means the be-all and end-all for student sport,” said Tommy.He said the Madibaz were the only club in
the Eastern Cape that competed at all levelsof national competition.“We have a national footprint in Varsity
Football, as well as the University SportSouth Africa national club champs wherewe have proved that we are one of the topseven footballing universities in the coun-try.”Tommy said the Madibaz had won two
from two matches in the Safa NMB regionalleague so far.“Our objective is to show that it is possible
to have a good tertiary education and stillachieve on the football field.

tance triathlon Series being extended tofour race days with the first sprint distanceevent taking place on Sunday, December 13,at Pollok Beach and open to all newcomersto triathlon.Race 2 will take place on Wednesday 16th
with round 3 on Sunday 20th. The Serieswill conclude with round 4 at Port St Fran-cis on Saturday, December 26.Each race day will offer a completely dif-
ferent sprint distance triathlon format butall will consist of a 750m swim, 20km cycleand 5km run with all online entrants re-ceiving a complimentary silicone swimcap.Teams of 3 are more than welcome with
each team member partaking in one of the3 legs of the triathlon in relay format.A kids triathlon for children between the
ages of 8 and 15 years will also take partover the weekend of the 3 Port Elizabethlegs of the Series.TheAbout IT Triathlon Series is well sup-

PE Oval Track Raceway will be hosting their next Oval Race at their home circuit on the MissionRoad in Greenbushes on Saturday, November 7. All the regular classes, including Beginners,1660 four cylinder, 2100 modified four cylinders, HotRods, Heavy Metal and Modified V8’s willbe hosted. Entrance fee is R50 for adults and R20 for children under 12 years. Spectators arewelcome to park around the circuit at no extra charge and there are excellent vantage pointsfrom which fans can watch the racing in the comfort of their cars protected from the weatherconditions.
