According to Roslyn Baatjies, spokesperson of NMMU, the money was withdrawn in three different transactions. According to Huebsch, there has also been a 25% increase in contact crimes such as rob- bery and theft against students in the above mentioned areas. “Our students fall prey and are targeted as a result of their habitual behaviour.” The behaviour Huebsch is referring to is that students walk with purses and cell- phones in their hands and walk alone at night. Brig. While the police are investigating the in- cidents, NMMU management has warned stu- dents not to withdraw money from ATMs aft- er banking hours. Students are also advised to walk in large groups at night and to avoid walking alone. “My family and I had everything & life was good but due tojealousy my husband’s family hated me. In fact he laterdivorced me too & left the kids with me to suffer. I visitedpriests, gurus & healers for help. Money was wastedwithout results. Luckily a caring old friend of mine took meto who has saved her daughter from drugs & alcoholabuse, I paid a R200 consultation fee, he accurately readmy fortune & told me all my problems without mementioning a word. He even used a mirror to show me real-faces of people who were trying to pull me down.

heidsondernemings met gewapende reaksie-spanne as een van die hoofredes vir die stygingin gewapende rooftogte by huise en sakeonder-nemings.“Die daedat ’n dief oor ’nheiningkon spring,

stuks, is daar volgens hom nou nagenoeg200 000 polisiebeamptes enamper 500 000 priva-te gewapende sekuriteitsbeamptes.Kapt.

Hy is laterontslaan.Niemand is nog in verband met die voorval

LEADING medical device supplier PhilipsHealth care, has made a substantial donationto upgrade the paediatric ward at governmenthospital, Dora Nginza.

The donation comes as bid to reduce thehigh infant mortality rate currently faced bythe Eastern Cape health care system.

The donation takes the form of high-techequipment, skills development and trainingto empower nursing staff to perform to theirbest ability in what is a pressurised and chal-lenging environment.

“Philips has championed the UN Millenni-um Development Goals 4 and 5, related to re-

ducing child mortality and improving mater-nal health throughout Africa,” says Jose Fer-nandes, general manager at PhilipsHealthcare Southern Africa.

Going back over 18 months now, the projectfirst started when the need for assistance atDora Nginza Hospital was identified.

A Philips Train-the-trainer Education Pro-gram was implemented to provide a compre-hensive, long-term collaboration where four‘super-user’ team leaders were identified tobecome educators for their colleagues.

“Recognizing that lack of availability oftrained and skilled healthcare professionalsis an increasing challenge across Africa, Phil-ips has put a lot of emphasis on education andskills development.

“The reaction from the nursing staff at DoraNginza has been one of enthusiasm and moti-vation as they’ve been empowered to perform

drafted once the project reaches fruition, andsimilar projects will be implemented at otherhospitals in need in the future.

DEVELOPERS behind what aims tobe South Africa’s largest mixed-useresidential development, the multi-billion rand Coega Ridge holistichousing estate between Motherwelland Coega outside Port Elizabeth, want to break groundas early as 2017.

This comes on the back of townplannersMetroplan submitting plansfor the development to the NelsonMandela Bay Municipality in June.Approval is expected in mid-2016.

Johannesburg-based Nu-WayHousing executive director JordanMann said that the company hadstarted town planning after beinggranted a positive record of decisionby the Eastern Cape government lastyear, andwasaiming tobreakgroundin 2017. The development is aimed ataddressing the massive housingshortage both regionally and nation-ally.The project would alleviate Nelson

said Mann.Mann said up to 5 000 jobs per

month would be created during theconstruction phase, which was ontrack to start in 2017, and that the en-tire project had a capital expenditurevalue of well in excess of R20 billion.“We are in talks with government

stakeholders to initiate the provisionof bulk services to the 3 200ha plot ofland thatwe have earmarked for Coe-ga Ridge,” said Mann.“We are also in talks with theman-

SHE had to give up her dream of becomingan electrical engineer because she had “noclue” how to use a computer. Now NilakheBalani is making sure other township chil-dren won’t have to do the same.

Balani, who was raised in Motherwell, started the Sikhanyise computer centre inArea Q of Walmer township, where chil-dren can attend classes from as young asfour years old.

The centre is linked to Ikamva Daycare, but is also offering computer training for

adults in the community, said Balani. “Iwant to challenge their mindset and helpthem regain their dignity,” she explained.“The people who live here aren’t that poor, but they have been told they’re poor so of-ten that they started to believe it. If we cantrain them for the workplace, they won’thave to beg anymore.”

It was Balani’s own career problems thatinspired her to open the centre. When shestarted her studies in electrical engineer-ing, she couldn’t keep up with the comput-er-based classes and had to drop out. “I re-alised later it was because public schoolsdon’t offer computer training, but I could

give that to other children. I wanted tochange lives, even if it is in a small way.”

She is very proud of the centre’s inde-pendence. “The community brought what-ever they had to contribute, and I collectedold computers from friends. Then Vitru-comp, a local computer company, donatedsome computers to the centre.

“Now my husband is an intern there, sohe can learn to fix the computers himselfif we ever have technical problems.”

Balani’s main concern is electricity, asthe township had been struggling withouta power supply for long periods at times.

In this time, Sikhanyise could not offerclasses. “We will have to look into alterna-tive solutions like solar panels, so that wewon’t have to depend on the power gridanymore,” Balani said.

“Luckily safety is not an issue. The com-munity knows the centre was built forthem, and that is why we haven’t had a sin-gle break-in. They are protecting it, be-cause they see what we are doing for themand they want to help.”

ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL

FROM playwright of theatre produc-tions aimed at the youth, to scriptwriter, director and producer of hisown films.

This leap was taken by Benito Car-elsen, proud product of Port Eliza-beth’s northern areas and now ownerof BLC Entertainment - his own pro-duction company.Carelsen has just released a film on

DVD called My Bra se Tjirrie, whichwas shot in and around PE and fea-tures local actors and former 7deLaan actor, Ficks Mahola. The drama rotates around three

main characters: Mano, his bestfriend Frankie, and Debbie - Frank-ie’s girlfriend. The film touches onmoral dilemmas such as drug addic-tion.“The change from theatre tomovies

is not a permanent one. I do still lovetheatre, but right nowmy primary fo-cus is filmmaking and the develop-ment of the industry.”His dream has always been to be a

television and film producer.“It does not feel like a career, does

not feel like work because I enjoy do-ing it so much,” Carelsen said.MyBra se Tjirrie is not his first shot

at filmmaking.Carelsen’s first movie, Another Dal

Story, was released in 2011. After thathe was the producer, head writer andlead actor in a TV comedy series, Son-gololo.“After the release of Another Dal

Story, which also featured a local castand crew, I found themovie to be verypopular among our community -mostly due to the fact that the audi-ence loves recognising our local ac-tors and locations in movies. Thefeedback I received was amazing, andit motivated me to shoot more localfilms. There is definitely a marketand opportunity for growth for film-making in the Eastern Cape.”His next film, Who Shot Johnny

Charles?, which was also directed, written and produced by Carelsen, will be released early next year.

Then he plans to shoot his biggestfilm yet, Saltville, during the courseof next year.“This movie is going to be huge.

And by huge I mean it could go inter-national since I am working with aninternational company. More than

that I cannot reveal at the moment,”Carelsen said. The My Bra se Tjirrie DVD can be

ordered by contacting Carelsen on 084653 0245 or e-mail [email protected]. The DVDs cost R50each.

THE sentiment “fitness is fun” was made truefor the learners of the Adolph Schauder Prima-ry School.

Theprimaryschool inSchaudervillerecentlyadded physical training (P.T.) to their schoolcurriculum, butalackof facilitiesmadethetaskmonotonous and unexciting for the learners.

“We often had to make use of fields outsidethe school, because our school did not have thefacilities nor the equipment available,” saidteacher Theresa Shambell.

Now, thanks to the third year Human Move-ment Science students at NMMU, the learnershavemorethanjustsportingequipment tokeepthem active.

The students, who specialise in fitness, havenowmadeitpossible for these learnersto imple-ment fitness in a fun way. Since the beginningof the year, they have been working hard to se-cure sponsorships to make their PasSport to

health project a reality.“We had to raise a total of R15 000,” said Lisa

Benjamin, the chairperson of the PasSport toHealthproject, whilepaintingnumbers forhop-scotch. “It hasn’t been easy, but we are so gladto be here today,” she said on Friday, when theyear’s efforts materialised.

The school also benefited with jungle gymsand monkey bar obstacle courses, which weresponsored by Windsor Forest Products. Sport-ing equipment like balls and jump ropes werealsodonatedtoensurethe fitnessof the learnersare maintained.

The principal of the school, Thomas Matt-hews, is extremelyhumbledby theefforts of thestudents. He feels that initiatives like PasSporttoHealthare excellentwaysofnot onlypromot-ing fitness, but to ensure that the younger gen-erationstillhavetheconceptof playingoutside.

“This will benefit them greatly and I’m surelearners will be very excited to come to school, because now they can play, learn and stay fit,all at the same time.”

“YOUR child is dyslexic.” A parent’s worstnightmare may be to hear these words.

This October, known as Dyslexia Aware-nessMonth, Edublox urges parents to find outmore about the reading and learning prob-lems their childrenmay have, so that they arebetter equipped to help them read, learn andachieve their highest educational potential.“A severe reading problem may be de-

scribed as dyslexia; however, what’smore im-portant is knowing how these problems canbe solved and that there is hope,” says Susandu Plessis, Edublox Director of EducationalProgrammes.Switching the letters ‘b’ and ‘d’ or reading

the word ‘bog’ instead of ‘dog’ are well-knownas typical signsof dyslexia.Whenchildrenarelabelled dyslexic their failure at school is of-

ten excused because their problem is consid-ered incurable. People may say that theirbrain is “wired” in a certainwayand it cannotbe changed.Du Plessis encourages parents not to give

up on their children.“Dyslexia is just a label for a cluster of

symptoms of reading and spelling problems. The science of neuroplasticity proves that thebrain can change. Often what appears to bedyslexia is a lack of certain cognitive skillswhich include laterality, form discrimina-tion, auditory sequencing and phonemicawareness. If these cognitive skills are prac-tised, a reading problem may become a thingof the past,” said Du Plessis.Even if a child is performing above average

at school, compared to international educa-tion standards their relative ability is some-what deceiving. The Progress in International Reading Lit-

eracy Study (PIRLS) comparing the readingabilities of Grade 4 children in 40 countriesranked South Africa worst in 2006. A followup study in 2011, which found Hong Kong toachieve the best standard globally, revealedthat our Grade 4 learners were “still perform-ing at a low level overall on an easier assess-ment compared to their counterparts interna-tionally.”* Research conducted by Edublox in Singa-

pore last year confirmed this concerning situ-ation.“A child whose reading level is considered

acceptable for his or her age in South Africamay be diagnosed as dyslexic in Singapore,”said Du Plessis.“A diagnosis of dyslexia is therefore rela-

tive to the specific country and environment.Instead of limiting academic performancewith a loosely-defined label we should focuson developing potential.”

The mother of a nine-year-old girl who wasdiagnosed with severe dyslexia had been toldthat therewas no hope for her child’s academ-ic success.“I was extremely worried when she had to

copy ‘discover’ and wrote, ‘coversid’. Howcould she ever manage to write exams nextyear in Grade 4? Whenever she read the let-ters would move on the page,” said her moth-er. According to Du Plessis, this is a sign ofa severe reading problem. After a ten-day in-tensive programme in cognitive develop-ment, the Grade 3 learner had overcome herfirst hurdle and informed hermother that theletters had stopped moving.“She has much more self-confidence and is

actually enjoying reading now,” reports hermother. As her cognitive skills are furtherstrengthened with exercises that ‘build’ herbrain shewill be able to beat her reading diffi-culties completely, said Du Plessis.

“NOBODY fears us now,” said aheadline in one of the country’sleading daily newspapers. It satalongside a typically aggressivehead-and-shoulders shot of 2007Springbok boss and World Cup win-ning coach, Jake White.

So...wonder what he’s sayingnow? Now that just a week after theJapanese disaster, the Boks, withplenty of panache and not a littleskill, are fresh off a hammering ofSamoa in round two of their Pool BWorld Cup outing at Villa Park, Bir-mingham.

Never mind, Jake, as you oughtto know rugby can be quite a funny– though never laughable – oldgame. Make no mistake, it’s a longhaul yet, but at least this vastly im-proved performance by the Boksshowed that there’s plenty of fightin the team yet.

Talking of which, among themany brickbats flung at this De Vil-liers-led team that he, the skipper, like his first lieutenant, Victor Mat-field, and others – all of them tooold, too weak, too slow, too-justabout-everything-negative – still

have plenty of fight left in them, though sadly this match signalledthe end of a fine career for the cap-tain.

Let’s keep in on the rugby field, too, and give the uncomplimentarymud-pies aimed at coach, HeynekeMeyer, a miss, at least for now. Inthe end rugby matches are won onthe turf the games are played on.

More performances of this cali-bre – against Scotland and the US– should comfortably ease the Boksinto the playoffs. No doubt it hasbeen pointed out to them that in2007, England were beaten in theiropening Pool game by the Boks butreached the final, only to lose to theBoks again.

Last Saturday there wasn’t aSpringbok on the park who didn’texcel in one way or another. Whatsensible timing, too, to relieve Mat-field and skipper De Villiers oftheir duties at just the right mo-ment.

From almost the first touch of theball, the South Africans, to a man, performed at the top of their game.No one more strikingly than JP Pi-

etersen with a hat-trick of tries ina performance that stood out as tallas his towering, pacy physique. Thethree tries, one couldn’t escape feel-ing, were in the nature of paybackby Pietersen for failing to put moreeffort into denying Japan thematch-winning try, a week earlier, with a more determined dive.

Wherever you looked last Satur-day brave deeds were being done.In this area chalk up full marksagainst the names of Bryan Habana– if there’s a second left on the clockfor a last minute try, Habana’s yourman – Willie le Roux; Handre Pol-lard; Fourie du Preez, what a crafts-man; the Schalk Burger, FrancoisLouw and Dwane Vermeulen loosetrio, and make that a double-star forthe last-named. And let’s not forgetMatfield and skipper De Villiers.

Now for Scotland. Same ap-proach, lads – everyone at maxi-mum revs. This could yet be a more-than-just-memorable World Cup!

Your best shot please. And you loton the sidelines and in front of yourTVs sing it loud and clear: “Ons virjou Suid Afrika!”

FOR this week’s Express on Wheels I hadthe pleasure of spending a week with abright yellow Sport version of the new OpelCorsa, and if it wasn’t the fun ride thatcaught my imagination, it sure was the col-our.

While I never thought a yellow car wouldever be my cup of tea, I certainly warmedup to it very quickly, and it certainly is ahead-turner.

The Sport, which was launched in Au-gust, is the top of the range model of Opel’sbrand-new 5th generation Corsa which waslaunched in SA in February. There are 5models in this range.

This 5-door 110 kW hatchback is aimedat the enthusiastic driver and equippedwith the latest engine from Opel’s ecoTECfamily of small petrol engines.

RideThe Sport is equipped with a 1.4 turbo-

charged ecoTEC engine which propels the

Corsa from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds, with a top speed of 204 km/h. The 1.4TSport’s tested fuel consumption is 5.9 litresper 100 km on the combined cycle.

The Corsa Sport comes with a six-speedmanual transmission with synchronisedgears, including reverse, with short shifttravel. It is a great car to take through thegears with easy gear selection and an eager-ness to get to sixth gear.

The new Corsa’s ride and handling havebeen improved with a new chassis andsteering systems. According to the peopleat Opel, a lower centre of gravity andchanges to the suspension have been madeto improve vehicle roll behaviour, steeringresponse and understeer behaviour.

The Sport’s combination of a good and ea-ger turbo-charge engine combined with ex-cellent road behaviour and great comfortfeatures as standard spec is sure to createa lot of interest – not only among fans ofsporty vehicles but also those who see driv-ing as fun rather that just getting from Ato B.

From putting your foot on the pedal, itis a pleasure to drive. Its roadholding isvery good and where Sport models are usu-ally associated with a “sporty” bumpyride, this was not the case with the Corsa, despite my pothole-ridden everyday route.

The car is swift-footed, yet driving it onealways felt safe and in control – both on theopen road and in city traffic. Even on steepinclines the engine performed well anddidn’t force you to gear down all the time.

Exterior

Those who do not like yellow have 14 oth-er colours to choose from. The Corsa Sporthas a few subtle differences from the other

models in the range to add to its sporty look– front and rear bumper extensions, siderocker mouldings, sporty exhaust tip, andcarbon look outside rear view mirror cov-ers. The big 17 inch “ Dark Titanium” alloywheels add to the sporty look and I likedthe two-tone wheel rims of the test vehiclethat reminds me of flower petals.

Interior

The flowing lines of the dashboard givethe Corsa a quality feel. Its sporty naturewas emphasized by a leather-covered flatbottom sport steering wheel with silvertrim, metal sports pedals and a big, nice-to-grip leather gear shift knob.

Opel’s Intellilink infotainment systemcomes standard in the Sport, offering aneasy to operate 7-inch touchscreen and con-nection to smartphones. Sound is operatedvia Bluetooth and a USB port.

Standard specsThe Opel Corsa Sport has a 5-Star NCAP

safety rating. The comprehensive list of safety features

found standard in the Corsa Sport includessix airbags, Electronic Stability Control(ESC) system. Traction Control (TC) isstandard in the Electronic Stability Con-trol (ESC). The primary goal of TractionControl is to prevent wheel slip from spin-ning during acceleration. Straight line Sta-bility (SLS) and Brake Assist System(BAS), is a braking technology that increas-es braking pressure in an emergency situa-tion.

The Corsa Sport boasts an impressive listof high-spec features as standard, such asauto lights and wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, bi-Xenon lights with corner-

ing light control, electric windows and mir-rors, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainmentsystem with smartphone navigation andapp integration, air-conditioning, reversecamera with rear park assist and cruisecontrol.

AS it turns out the only show that the JapaneseGrandPrixputonwas todemonstrate justwhata difference seven days could make.In Singapore Mercedes were shockingly off

the pace andnever got close to troubling the topstep of the podium. It nowappears that this per-formance was merely an anomaly. With a dis-tinct and obvious pace advantage in practiceand a front row lock-out in qualifying, both Le-wis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg returned thestatus quo of Formula 1 in 2015.Nico Rosberg lined up his Mercedes in pole

position alongside Lewis Hamilton for the startof the race. The German’s advantage, however, would last only a handful of seconds as Hamil-ton decisively pushed Rosberg aside to take thelead of the race into turn two. Ferrari’s Sebas-tian Vettel slotted into second, after startingfourth, whileRosbergslippeddownto fourthbe-hind the Williams of Valtteri Bottas. The race seemed to settle early on as Hamil-

ton extended his lead over second-placed Vettelwhohadnoanswer for thepaceof theMercedes.Itappearedtoall thatHamiltonwascruisinghisway to victory but the driver confirmed that hehad to cope with a tyre issue during the race.“At one stage I had such a vibration it was

giving me a headache and everything wasblurred,” said Hamilton.Evenso,Hamilton lordedhisunbeatablepace

over the entire field, on occasion lapping morethana second faster thananyoneelse.NicoRos-berg, throughpitstopstrategyandapaceadvan-tage, was able to recover to second place by theend of the 53-lap race only two seconds aheadof third place finisher Sebastian Vettel.IntheendRosbergfinishednearlytwentysec-

onds adrift of his race-winning teammate andsaw the points gap extend to 48 points. It isn’tyet mathematically impossible for Rosberg totake the driver’s crown but it is becoming in-creasinglyunlikelythathewilldoso.Naturally,there are many variables, such as reliability,

that could factor into the final results. But aswas evidenced again in Japan in a straight outwheel-to-wheel fight with Hamilton, Nico Ros-berg just doesn’t have what it takes to beat hisdouble world champion teammate.Behind the top three finishers Ferrari’s Kimi

RaikkonenusedpitstopstrategytoundercuttheWilliamsofValtteriBottasandtakefourthplaceon the day. Despite finishing in fifth Bottaswould’vebeendisappointedwith thepace of hiscar considering that he was overtaken by both

right now.The days of being a McLaren driver are just

a fond memory for Lewis Hamilton now as hestandsonthecuspofbecomingathree-timeFor-mula 1 world champion. The victory in Japanis the 41st of his career and brings him level inthe number of wins with his great hero AyrtonSenna. It’s neverwise to compare drivers of dif-ferent eras so we won’t. Instead we are safe inthe knowledge that at this moment Lewis Ha-milton is well and truly the man.

TALKINGF1:NATALIE LE CLUE

Hamilton isbackon top

Rosberg and Raikkonen, on the hard tyre, while running on the effectively quickermedi-um compound tyre. The sister Williams of Felipe Massa had a

slight coming together with Red Bull’s DanielRicciardo off the start line. Both drivers suf-fered punctures which they weren’t able to re-cover from and eventually finished the race infifteenthand seventeenth respectively.Theon-ly retirement of the race came in the form ofSauber’s Felipe Nasr with one lap remaining.ForceIndia’sNicoHulkenbergfinishedasol-

id sixth ahead of the Lotus duo Romain Gros-jean andPastorMaldonado. Itwas an impress-ive showing by the Lotus drivers consideringthe financialdifficulties the teamarecurrentlyfacing. Toro Rosso’s ever impressive rookiepairing of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainzfinished ninth and tenth. It wasn’t a clean runto the flag for Sainz howeverwho smacked thebollard coming into the pitlane destroying hisfront-win in the process. In eleventh place and a lap down is where

McLaren’sFernandoAlonso finishedhisJapa-nese GP much to his displeasure. Owing to adreadfully uncompetitive season the Span-iard’s frustration seemed to boil over. As hewas mugged for position on the straights hecompared his Honda engine to that of a GP2car; there’s a bit of amusement in there if yousquint really hard. The good news for Alonsois that it can hardly get any worse than it is

THOUSANDS descended on the city centrethis weekend to witness the Nelson MandelaBay Urban Run hosted by the Mandela BayDevelopment Agency and SA’s first InnerCity Enduro.

Starting and finishing from theDonkinRe-serve, just under a thousand runners tookpart in this unique Urban Run which tookparticipants on an 8.5km route through thehistoric CBD and included many of the reju-venated sections of the city.Along the route some 20 obstacles and 4wa-

ter stations were set up by local companiesbut this didn’t seem to slow down the overallracewinners Siyolo Dick (37min 41 secs) andLindi-Mae Terblanche (52:06).However, as with every year, the real win-

ners of the Urban Run charity event are thecharities who represent those unable to en-

joy such pleasures in life. The adults urbanrunners raised much needed funding forCleary Estate Cheshire Home, raising awhopping R107 883.On Saturday just under 90 children took

part in the run managed to raise just underR10 000 for the Reach for a Dream Founda-tion with Lwambeso Magwada and MikailVan Huyssteen winning the coveted UrbanRun trophies. The Nutritech slip and slide obstacle was

voted by the participants as the best obstacleof the eventwhilst theClearyCheshirewatertable was voted as the best water table. For the second year running, Lyndon Ba-

gley scooped up the Philanthropist prize forraisingR5 520 for the charitywhilstMatthewFerreira raised the most amount in the Kidsrace andwon for himself a bicycle fromCylo-pro.See www.urbanrun.co.za for all the results, pic-

tures and videos of this weekend’s events.
