PLEASE do not release Chinese lanterns on thebeach!

This urgent request was again made by theNationalSeaRescueInstitute (NSRI) aftermem-bers of the Port Elizabeth branch recently racedto “emergency flares” that seemed to have comefrom a boat at sea.

A little flame in the Chinese lanterns (a typeof “flying box” of translucent rice paper) is litbefore they are released to soar in the air.

A Bay resident who saw the “emergency fla-res” over Algoa Bay from a Summerstrand res-taurant just before 8pm on Thursday night, hadkept insisting that itwas a distress signal, NSRIspokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

Although Port Elizabeth NSRI members talk-ed to car guards and other beachgoers at theSummerstrand beachfront and indeed receivedconfirmation thatagroupofpeoplehadreleased

about 10 Chinese lanterns across the water ear-lier in the evening, further investigation wasconducted as the initial witness was convincedthat the “distress signals” were from a boat.

“It was possible that the Chinese lanternscould have been released at exactly the same ti-meaflarefromaboatwassent,”Lambinonsaid.

“Consequently, we sent a lifeboat and evendid an inspection at all the boat-launching sitesto see if therewere emptyboat trailers or emptyvehicles.

“The members also continued to watch thesea for any further distress signals, but therewas nothing,” Lambinon said.

After the incident, the NSRI again appealedto thepublic toavoidreleasingChinese lanternson the beach since they could be confused withemergencyflaresfromaboat.–MARISKASPOORMA-KER

THE polluted North End Lake in downtownPort Elizabeth is about to look even worse, with a thin layer of dirty sludge set to appearalong the water surface in the comingweeks.

That, though, is the good news, as it sig-nals the long-awaited clean-up of a major wa-ter sports attraction in the region – a moveheralded by water sports bodies in the city.

According to Sarel Bam, director of RhinoWater, the company charged with the natu-ral rehabilitation of the water body, an ad-vanced open water treatment solution willbe dosed into the lake over the course of thenext two to three months.

Initial dosing started on November 5.The term for the clean-up is “bioremedia-

tion” – defined as “any process that uses mi-cro-organisms, fungi, green plants or theirenzymes to return the natural environmentaltered by contaminants to its original con-dition,” Bam said.

The product, supplied by George-basedwater treatment specialists, Cool Technolo-gy, using patented technology from US com-pany Blue Planet LLC, will result in the pol-luted sludge in the lake gradually lifting tothe surface, explained Bam.

This, he said, would form a thin sludge-like film on the surface of the lake, whichwould decompose rapidly.

This process will continue until all sludgeat the bottom of the lake has been digested.Among the case studies for the North EndLake clean-up was a retention pond in Pen-ang, Malaysia, which was turned from pol-luted eyesore to welcome tourist attractionthrough the bioremediation process.

Bam said the anticipated effect of the bio-remediation included that:

•Sludge will surface and then digest;•Sludge will drift with the wind and accu-

mulate against the bank of lake;

•The colour of water will change frequently;and

•The lake appearance will improve and dete-riorate cyclically until bio-remediation is com-plete.

“It is important that the clean-up process isall natural; that it is not harmful to humansor aquatic life and that it enhances the envi-ronment,” said Bam. “Finding unique solu-tions to challenging problems such as this iswhat we strive for at Rhino Water.”

The clean-up, which is rolling out under thewatchful eye of NMB Stadium operators Ac-cess Management, has seen gabions and reedbed systems constructed at the various waterentry points around the lake, to filter debrisand prevent it from reaching the lake.

According to owner of regional sports com-pany Zsports Events NPC, Michael Zoetmul-der, the clean-up is a major boost for sports en-thusiasts, as well as for sports tourism in theregion.

“We have been a campaigner of North EndLake as a top water sports venue for manyyears,” Zoetmulder said.

“We are confident that a clean North EndLake will become the country’s premier watersports venue and to this effect, together withNelson Mandela Bay Aquatics and AccessManagement, Zsports Events NPC is trying tosecure a three-year contract to host a leg of theWorld 10km Open Water Swimming Champi-

onship – a first for Africa.”Canoeing, sailing, wakeboarding, power-

boats, stand-up paddling, triathlon and open

water swimming are just some of the watersport activities which would benefit massive-ly once the lake has been cleaned, he said.

THE Nelson Mandela Bay metro police for-ce has now lost its only official employee.

This employee is Pinkie Mathabathe, who was appointed as metro police chief inFebruary last year, at a salary of approx-imately R1 million peryear, although therewas no workforce to ma-nage.“She could not really

thrive as police chief, because she was like aqueen without a king-dom in this position,”said mayor Danny Jor-daan.Mathabathe will now

step in as the acting exe-cutive director of safetyand security in the metro, announced Jor-daan.This comes after Shane Brown, the for-

mer director, after a month’s sick leave re-quested to return to his previous post as

head of disaster management.“It makes sense to put her in this positi-

on,” Jordaan explained.“She already receives a salary while the

metro police has not yet been established. It is more cost-effective in this way, becau-se we will not have to pay a new salary.”The move to appoint Mathabathe as di-

rector, is, however, not a popular choice.“She did not come

with a good historyfrom her previouspositions elsewhere, and here she has notdone anything. Theplan to move her, isjust proof for us thatthe metro has aban-doned its plan to cre-ate a metro policeforce,” Retief Oden-

daal, DA leader in the metro, said. Jordaandefended Mathabathe, however.“I’ve seen her in action and believe she

will be able to face the challenges in hernew office.”

THE human body is designed to mo-ve - arms stretched, legs elevatedand to dance when the music isright.

Pupils of primary schools in theBay’s northern areas converged atthe Gelvandale athletics track lastweek and showed just how oneshould go about stretching and dan-cing.The groups from GJ Louw Prima-

ry School in Schauderville, AlphaPrimary School in Gelvandale, Sap-phire Road Primary School in Booy-sen Park and Kleinskool PrimarySchool were part of a pilot program-me, “Designed toMove”, which pro-motes physical exercise in schools.“The idea is to promote health

and exercise among pupils. Exerci-se does wonders for the promotionof learning and discipline in theclassroom,” said Neil Campher ofUkuvula Foundation, one of the sta-keholders of the programme. The event was the culmination of

a year-long programme at theschools where teachers and volun-teers are trained to sharpen physi-cal exercise as part of the curricu-lum.Motivational talks by sportspeo-

ple, first aid training for teachersand donated equipment to use onthe sports field are some of thethings which benefited the schoolsin this programme.According to Campher, the next

step is to involvemore stakeholdersand implement the programme atother schools.

“We have also taught the childrenindigenous games that are no lon-ger being played,” said Reynold So-lomons of CS Innovations. “It’sgood that children learn to play. The programme was also a way tohelp learners to focus on somethingother than the violence in theircommunities,” he said.Together with CS Innovations

and the Ukuvula Foundation, theprogramme was also supported bythe German Society for Internatio-nal Cooperation (GIZ), which is thelink between schools and the de-partment of basic education.“The idea is not to take over phy-

sical exercise in schools, butmerelyto offer advice to teachers on howto deal with this part of the curricu-lum as pleasantly as possible,”Campher and Solomons said.

AT first glance, Hilton Sansom is your stereo-typical “privileged student”. The well-spoken22-year-oldattendedGreyHigh,matriculated in2011 with a 93% aggregate, and received one ofNMMU’smost prestigious bursaries – theVice-Chancellor’s Scholarship, currently worthR80 000-plus annually – for each year of hisBCom (Chartered Accountancy) degree.Butwhatmostpeopledon’t realise is justhow

Having realised after three years that audit-ing was “not really [his] thing”, he was able toidentify his passion for the fashion industry –and is now planning to apply his businessknowledge to build a career in this field.“I learned a lot about myself and found the

direction I need to take in life. For me, that’ssuccess already.”

Sansom was one of three panellists sharingtheir “struggle to success” stories at the end-of-year function for NMMU School of Account-ing’s PinnAcle Leadership Programme, aground-breaking programme designed to fast-track the development of the School’s top 80CharteredAccountancystudentsintoresponsi-ble leaders.

The other two panellists were Lunga Tshiki-la (24), an orphanwho dropped out of universi-ty in 2012 but has gone on to become one ofSouthAfrica’s top youngCEOs, andGuguNxi-weni (35), a Chartered Accountant, NMMUalumnusandsocial entrepreneurwhorecentlyco-founded his own company. In his talk, Nxiweni, the Executive Chair-

Influence comes from the stages of life we’re allexperiencing at present.

What would you say are some of your biggest achievements as a band?I guess the goal posts are always shifting, but

starting from getting our first song on radio towinninganMTVMAMA, therehasbeenanum-ber of really awesome moments on the journeyand we are really grateful for everything thathas come our way.

What is your favourite venue/city to perform? And why?Other than PE, of course, we love the people

of Pretoria, so that’s always a fun city to play. They just want to have a party and seem to justbe waiting for you to give them permission todo so – which makes playing a show incrediblyfun.

Have you ever performed in Port Elizabethbefore? If so, how did you experience PE?Yes we have! It was hot, sweaty and crowded

– just the way we like it!

Whatadvicewouldyougive to fans/youngsters dreaming about being where you aretoday and being successful in general?

Ask other bands how they do things, stayhumble, work hard, refine your art.

Who are your musical inspirations/idols?So many to mention, we listen to a lot of mu-

sic. Anything from jazz to hip hop to rock andpop. Formemore recently I havebeen listeningto the likes of James Blake, D’Angelo, and JackGarratt to name a few.

Describe your music style…Always hard to do, but generally alternative

rock with a hint of pop.)The EP is the band’s first official release

since the release of their debut album in 2013.Theywill perform at The Bru Bar inWalmer

onNovember27 from6pm.TicketscostR100perperson and can be bought online from www.quick-et.co.za or at the door.

GALE forcewindandrain couldnot stopa local surferfrombreaking theGuinnessWorldRecord for the lon-gest surfing marathon.

Josh Enslin (30) stepped off his surfboard at 6pm

on Sunday after 30 hours of catching waves, and thusbeating the World Record of 29 hours and 27 minutesset by American surfer Ben Shaw last year.

Enslin started the marathon surf session at PollokBeack at noon on Saturday.Afterwards, a tired but overjoyed Enslin said that

two hours before the end of the challenge hewaswon-

dering whether he would be able to see itthrough.According to Enslin, of the Cyoh Surf

Club, the record attempt was not only forpersonal achievement, but to also raisefunds, clothes, food and other non-perisha-ble items for street children and a children’shome.Robert Jacobs ofCyoh said theywere over-

whelmed by the donations of clothes, foodand blankets, as well as the support Enslinreceived from the public. Wetsuits and sur-fing equipmentwere also collected for disad-vantaged surfers.“He was never alone in the water and was

supported right through the night by surferstaking turns in shifts to ride with him,” saidJacobs.Enslin was only allowed ten-minute bre-

aks every two hours.According to Jacobs, the biggest challenge

was the wind that was blowing gale force attimes, as well as surfing through the nightwith the drop in temperature and the threatof sharks. To combat this he wore extra clo-thes and had a shark prod.“The wind also hurt his eyes and we had

to devise goggles for him from diving gog-gles,” said Jacobs.By noon on Sunday, with 24 hours of sur-

fing completed he had surfed 380 waves alre-ady, which ismuchmore than the 300 surfedby Shaw during his challenge.V See video on the PE Express facebook page.

“MY cup runneth over,” says David in Psalm23 Verse 4. Yes, it’s a huge jump from that mostquoted of psalms to modern day sport – butthere are times when this biblical quotationseems to fit perfectly into the pattern of things. So much is happening of late – both the good

and bad of sport. Praiseworthy of course, buthow sad that the International Association ofAthletics (IAAF), governing body of Olympicsport has voted overwhelmingly to suspendRussia from all forms of sport governed by theIAAF – unless the country can demonstrate amajor change in its approach to doping andways of eradicating this scourge.

After an extensive conference last Friday theIAAFcouncilvotedbyamarginof22-1 in favourof the sanction – with the Russian representa-tive not allowed to vote. Themeetingwas calledby the commission of the World Anti-DopingAgency (Wada) on the grounds of alleged “sys-tematic” collusion between Russian athletesand both the country’s athletics federation andanti-doping authorities.Itwasnotedbythe IAAFthata“deeplyrooted

culture of cheating” had enabled Russia’s ath-letes to take performance-enhancing drugswithout fear of being tested. The report recom-mended suspending the Russian federation un-

protection of clean athletes.” Hats off to theIAAF and its boss. “We will get the change wewant,”he says, “andonly thenwillRussianath-letes return to international competition.”Good to see Roger Federer, one who always

feels – through his South African mom – likeone of our own, calling for more vigorous anti-doping tests to ensure that tennis is kept 100%clean.Turning to the week past in which it looked

as if – even though full days were lost to wetweather – that at theverybest theProteas couldonly hope by today to have pulled off a veryshaky draw in the second Test against India inBangalore.Hats off here toAB deVilliers and his plucky

85 in his 100th Test innings – even if the cleancatch that dismissed the Proteas’ master musthave been a disappointment to a large sectionof the hometown Indian crowd intent on sweep-ing the SA star to his 100 as they kept on chant-ing “ABD” every time he raised his bat.

President of theNZRU, Steve Tew, says thereis some concern by Super Rugby organisersthat the three new teams joining Super Rugbynextyear–Argentina,JapanandPE’sSouthernKings – may not be up to standard. “Are theyready for SuperRugby,” asksTew, even thoughJapan recorded a shock win over the Spring-boks at the recent World Cup held in England.“Yes, we’re excited about their inclusion, but

are they truly up to it? It’s a big step up.” Thereis much speculation, too, about former Japancoach, Eddie Jones, who is taking over asStormers’ new coach in Cape Town. Jones isrugby’s so-called miracle maker these days. Finally best news in a longwhile comes from

the Bafana Bafana soccer front following lastweek’s 3-1WorldCupqualifying defeat ofAngo-la in Benguela, specially thewayBafana foughtback after conceding an early goal. It was thefirst defeat in 26matches for the Angolan team. Now for the return game this week. Let’s drinkto that, too!

AS far as the show is concerned theBrazilianGrand Prix didn’t quite live up to its dramat-ic heights.

Nico Rosberg led into turn one followed byMercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton and thetwo Ferrari’s of Sebastian Vettel and KimiRaikkonen. The battle between Rosberg and Hamilton

carried on for quite some time but the Ger-man was doing an impressive job of control-ling his three-time world champion team-mate.By being in the lead car on the track it af-

forded Rosberg control of tyre strategy andthe call on when to come in.It left Hamilton at his mercy but the Brit

still tried everything to snatch the lead of therace. He stayed within a second of Rosbergfor a good number of laps but was unable tocreate a real overtaking chance. This approach was soon abandoned as it

meant that Hamilton’s tyres wouldn’t lastthe stint if he continued to hound the backof the no.6 Mercedes. In third place Sebastian Vettel kept a good

pace but never truly threatened either Mer-cedes. He opted for an alternative strategyand ran the soft tyre midway through butstill couldn’t threaten. TeammateKimiRaik-konen was some way off in fourth in whathe described as a boring race. The Finn had a late engine change but in-

curred no grid penalty as it was a unit thathad been previously used.Such was the rush job on the engine that

Dave Greenwood, Raikkonen’s race engi-neer, was providing instructions for engine

set-up during the race.At a point in the race Greenwood could be

heard on the radio apologising to the driver,“Sorry for all the changes; we’re just tryingto get this engine set up.”Nevertheless, it wasn’t a disastrous week-

end for Ferrari as they experienced inMexi-co.In fact, the pace has been the best the team

has shown in quite a few races. Add to thefact that all but four cars, two Mercedes andtwo Ferraris, were lapped on the day and theItalian team can feel darn good about theirprogress.Hamilton noted after the race that over-

taking on the Interlagos circuitwas impossi-ble. However, it didn’t seem too difficult atask for 18-year-oldMaxVerstappen. TheTo-ro Rosso driver pulled off a few stunningmoves around the outside of turn one whichany driver on the grid would be proud toachieve. There are many factors whichstopped Hamilton from just sending a moveup the inside of Rosberg. His experience would’ve told him that he

just wasn’t close enough. Mercedes toowould’ve strongly cautioned him on the po-tential outcome of a collision. How is it then that an 18-year-oldMaxVer-

stappen is given the licence to even attemptthose audacious overtaking moves and athree-time champ is not. The argumentcould bemade thatVerstappenandToroRos-so have little to lose should he be involvedin a shunt. And yes, it’s only spectacular un-til it ends in a lot of carbon fibre pieces. But really Verstappen has earned his ‘li-

cense’ by proving that his overtaking prow-

ess is no fluke. In China, Belgium and Brazil his moves

have been extravagant but clean. And nowhe is already building his reputation as anuncompromising overtaker which futureteams will be familiar with, come to expect, andhopefully not try to suppress. Here’s hop-ing that Verstappen never loses the fearless-ness he has now.Behind the two Ferraris Valtteri Bottas

finished in a very distant fifth for Williamswhile Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg held offthe Red Bull of Daniil Kvyat for a sixth placefinish.Felipe Massa finished the race eighth on

the track but was later excluded from the re-sults after stewards found that his right-reartyre “did not comply with the maximum per-mitted temperature ahead of the start of therace.” The Williams team has announcedthat it will be appealing the exclusion. It meant that Lotus driver Romain Gros-

jean was promoted to eighth ahead of MaxVerstappen and the second Lotus of PastorMaldonado.Despite running an upgraded Renault en-

gine Daniel Ricciardo finished outside thepoints in eleventh. While McLaren’s JensonButton and Fernando Alonso ended the racein fourteenth and fifteenth Toro Rosso’s Car-los Sainz was the only retirement with an en-gine failure.By winning the Brazilian Grand Prix Ros-

berg has secured second place in the driver’sstandings and as in Mexico has proven thathe has the skill to beat Lewis Hamilton. All that remains now for the championship

runner-up is to deliver when it counts most.
