RUGBY is on the rise in the region andit’s not only the Southern Kings thatpeople should be proud of.

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Uni-versity’s high-flying first XV, The Madibaz,have won three consecutive home gamesand are hoping for great home support onMonday, March 18 when they take on theteam of the University of Pretoria (Tukkies)in what is their biggest chance to date ofmaking the semi-finals of the universitycompetition. NMMU is presently fourth onthe log – their best performance so far in thesix-year history of the student competition.The team have this week launched a cam-

paign visiting schools in the metro in an at-tempt to get 10 000 supporters (namedDibas)for this game in the NMMU Stadium at theuniversity’s South Campus. It will be theirfinal home game of the Varsity Cup season.“The support we have received has been

incredible, but we’d like tomake it even bet-ter for the final home game,” said Madibazcoach Brent Janse van Rensburg.“Rugby is on the rise in our province. We

know what support can do for our team,”added Brent.There are various incentives for specta-

tors, all mirroring the 10 000 Dibas call.These include R10 000 up for grabs in thekicking competition at half-time and R10 000for the best NMMU residence supporters.Entry is free. Kick-off is at 7pm.

The Port ElizabethModel Locomotive Socie-ty (PEMLS) is celebrating its 50th birthdaythis month with special events on Sunday,March 17 from 10am to 1pm, at the track onthe corner of Stella Londt Drive and MayWay, Sunridge Park.The Society was founded in 1963. The first

track was around the garden of a member’shome in Sunridge Park.In 1965 they managed to acquire the

present grounds on a lease agreement fromtheMunicipality. Themembersundertook tobuild the complete layout that exists today invarious stages.Maintenance and running for

the public are undertaken on a voluntary ba-sis bymembers in the interest of their hobby.Private steam locomotives andClubDiesel

engines are run for the public rides and en-tertainment. Some of their visitors werethemselves small children, and now bringtheir own children to enjoy the surroundsand rides.The cost is R6 per ride. Apart from the

Dalmeyer, wat die Port Elizabeth Fertili-teitseenheid 27 jaar gelede in Port Elizabethgevestig het, verhuis na Kaap-stad.

Tydens sy afskeidsgeselligheidis hy verras met die nuus dat dieeenheid nou na hom vernoem salword.

Hy het aan die Universiteit vanKaapstad studeer en as reproduk-tiewe spesialis gekwalifiseer.Dalmeyer se eerste baba wat metbehulp van in-vitro-bevrugtingverwek is, is 26 jaar gelede gebore.

“Ginekologie is vir my een vandie mees bevredigende rigtings inmedisyne omdat jy as dokter metgesonde, gelukkige mense werken die uitkoms is gewoonlik posi-tief,” sê Dalmeyer.

“Dit is opbouend en ek wou ’npad stap, saam met elke pasiënt,om daardeur ’n positiewe bydraetot elkeen se lewe te kan maak.Om ’n rol te speel in ’n vrou se lewe wat aan-vanklik dink dat sy nooit ’n kind sal kan hênie, was vir my ongelooflik.

“Ek was slegs ’n instrument, maar diewete dat ek moontlik lewens kan veranderwas vir my ‘groot’. Die vreugde van ’nswangerskap het my lewe verryk en diehartseer van ’n onsuksesvolle proses, wasnet so swaar. Dit is die bitter-soet van dielewe,” het Dalmeyer gesê.

Volgens Dalmeyer was die lekkerste deelvan sy beroep om ’n paartjie te kan help om

met ’n gesin te begin.“Om van die begin af deel te hê aan die

proses en om dan die vreugde saam met die

ouers te kan ervaar, is onbeskryflik bevre-digend. Die moeilikste deel van die beroepis om saam met die paartjie deur die emosievan ’n onsuksesvolle proses te werk,” hetDalmeyer gesê.

Sy drome vir die kliniek is dat dit net gro-ter en beter sal word.

“Daar is baie nuwe mediese ontwikkelingen ek glo en vertrou dat die kliniek altyd op

die voorpunt van die nuutste ont-wikkeling sal bly. Die kliniek is ingoeie, bekwame hande onder lei-ding van dr. Danie Botha. Ons hetlank saam gewerk en dit gee virmy baie gemoedsrus om ‘my baba’aan hom oor te gee.”

Dalmeyer en sy vrou Rene, wathy as sy steunpilaar bestempel,het twee dogters, Lisa en Lara. Li-sa is 29 jaar oud en sy is ’n mediesedokter wat tans spesialiseer inonkologie. Lara is 24 jaar oud ensy is ’n statistikus vir ’n finansiëlefirma in Kaapstad.

Vir sy aftrede beplan hy om be-slis nie stil te sit nie.

“Ek glo ’n mens moet altyd besigbly om ’n verskil te maak daarbuite. Ek sal betrokke wees by dieopleiding van sub-spesialiste aandie Universiteit van Kaapstad. Ek

sal ook nog op ’n gereelde basis die Vriende-like Stad besoek om in te staan vir Dr.Botha, soos wanneer hy my sal nodig hê.”

Chapter 4 of the Municipal Systems Act of 2000 states that a municipality must develop a culture of municipal governancethat complements formal representative governance with a system of participatory governance, and must for this purposeencourage and create conditions for the local community to participate in the affairs of the Municipality, including in thepreparation, implementation and review of its integrated development plan, in terms of Chapter 5.

During the period 13 to 20 March 2013, the Municipality will be conducting a series of public meetings on itspreparation for 2013/14 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget and presentation of 2011/12 Annual Report.In addition to the aforesaid, the following By-laws will be discussed: the Problem Buildings By-law and HeritageResources, Arts and Culture By-law.

THE Survivors’ Lifeskills Centre, a rehabili-tation centre which opened last year, has ac-quired bigger premises to accommodate thegrowing need in Port Elizabeth.

The centre, which is the first of its kind inthe Bay, has a special rehabilitation processwhich includes a six-week programme, start-ing with a five-day detox. This is followed bya three-week in-patient programme andthree-week out-patient programme consist-ing of a lifeskill and 12-Steps programme, Is-lamic and Bible study classes..

Mohamed Mayet and Fahldeela Salie arethe founders of this centre, which was basedat the Ruven Centre in Korsten. Their new,bigger building is situated at 44 StanfordRoad, which would accommodate girls sepa-rately.“Wehavegrownsobig that biggerpremises

were inevitable. We now have 102 patientsand we will be able to accommodate manymore with in-patient rehabilitation,” saidMayet. The new building will also house anin-house psychologist, nurse, doctor on call,masseuse and attorney.Mohammed Mayet can be contacted on

NINE years ago Dr Heilie Uys of Cape StFrancis was anxiously awaiting a kidneytransplant after suffering renal failure andbeing on dialysis for over three years.On March 13, 2004, she received her kid-

ney transplant and has since grabbed lifewith both of her hands. This year Heilie,who competes in the 60-69 years age group,will be competing for her fifth gold for golfat the 2013 World Transplant SummerGames in Durban from July 28 to August 4.A total of 1 500 athletes from at least 55

countries will compete at various venuesacross Durban in the biggest organ donorawareness event in the world. There areover 50 events, including athletics, swim-ming, tennis, squash, golf, volleyball andbowling, cycling and road races.The World Transplant Games are a cele-

bration of thehumanspirit, giving individu-als with previously life-threatening illness-es the chance to compete in a high-levelsports event andprove that they cannot only lead normal,fulfilling lives, butpush the boundariesof their physical en-durance.The event aims to

offer hope to thoseawaiting transplantsand encourage thepublic to become do-nors.

Dr Heilie’s storyHeilie, who is the

SA Transplant SportsAssociation (SATSA)National Secretaryand a member of the World TransplantGames 2013 Local Organising Committee,started her career as a critical care nurse.“I came into contact with the reality of pa-

tients with brain stem death, and used to bevery unsympathetic towards transplant co-ordinators who had to manage these pa-tients for transplantation. We used to callthem ‘vultures’ when they visited our unit.“The more I came into contact with pa-

tients with renal failure, the more I realisedthat this would be my choice of speciality.When I became the nurse in charge of ahaemodialysis unit, I had a very different at-titude towards Transplant Coordinators.Now we were partners and I also became a‘vulture’,” said Heilie.Branching out into nursing education,

she lectured in Nephrology Nursing at thethen Rand Afrikaans University and Uni-versity of Port Elizabeth.“I used to lecture to the students on all the

aspects of chronic kidney disease and renalreplacement therapy and used to tell them‘This is how patients feel and how they

should adapt to their illness’.”She was, however, soon to find out first-

hand how the illness changes one’s life. Dur-ing 1994 she contracted Wegener’s Disease(systemic vasculitis) that destroyed her si-nuses, affected her lungs and caused her togo into renal failure for which she had to goonto peritoneal dialysis.“Here I was, knowing all about dialysis,

and had to dialyse myself at night on auto-mated peritoneal dialysis. Soon I realisedthe reality of having a machine in the bed-room and the effect that diet, emotional tur-moil and restrictions have on the family.For the first time I could tell the students ex-actly how a patient feels!” said Dr Heilie“Transplantation is for most of the pa-

tients on dialysis, the ultimate destinationto renewed life. We always say, ‘When thecall comes…’ but we don’t realise what itmeans. I felt like apregnantwomanwhowasgoing into labour and did not have my suit-

case ready for the trip.“When the call came

at 08:40 on Saturday13thMarch 2004, I wastold to be in CapeTownby 13:00.We stayinCape St Francis andit was impossible toget there in time. For-tunately a friend, RoyLiebenberg, has asmall plane and byclosing my eyes andpraying, we managedto get to Cape Town by12:30,” she said.“Teaching students

ciation of SA (which later became the SouthAfrican Transplant Sports Association –SATSA) and qualified to participate in the2005 World Transplant Games (WTG) inCanada. What an experience! To be part of1500 transplantees from all over the worldcompeting in good spirit and celebratinglife, was overwhelming.Since then she has participated in the 2007

WTG inBangkok, the 2009WTG inAustraliaand the 2011 WTG in Sweden and has won14 medals in total.“I can just thank the Lord for the strength,

THE Renegade Rockers come out to play atthe Boardwalk Amphitheatre from tonightuntil Saturday as Centrestage presents TheLegends of Rock, featuring guest artist CedricVandenschrick in front of the popular Centre-stage All-Star Band.

The larger than life Vandenschrik will re-animate the colourful characters of musicalanarchists Freddy Mercury, David Bowie,John Lennon and Jim Morrision, with sa-lutes to The Police and Led Zeppelin also inthe mix.

Other renegades who created a counter cul-ture of their own feature include Rodriguez,Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler and Twisted Sister,who will be energetically saluted by home-boy Wayne Kallis, with Gino Fabbri takinga turn as Mick Jagger and ace guitaristSherid Van Rooyen tearing it up as JimmiHendrix.

Cedric (nicknamed Ced) is a veteran of themusical theatre stage, having played thesecharacters to high praise in front of many hitBarnyard shows, such asRoll over Beethoven,Rock me Amadeus and Forever Young,throughout the country.

Born in Mogadiscio (Somalia) of an ItalianMother and a Belgian father, Cedric is a true

citizen of the world, speaking fluent French,Italian and English.

He has been involved in music and theatreprofessionally since 1993, where the first col-laboration between Vanderschrick and Cen-trestage owner Gary Hemmings saw the stag-ing of his Pink Floyd tribute The Wall at theGrahamstown Festival that year.

Ced’s internationally acclaimed tribute toJacques Brel entitled “Brel – Rough Dia-mond” toured the world, where he performedas far afield as Belgium, Ireland, Italy, TheUnited States, China, Mauritius, Reunionand the Edinburgh international festival.

“As Cedric is a son of Port Elizabeth, hav-ing spent many of his formative years here,it is a great honour to finally be able to show-case Cedric’s flamboyant theatricality infront of PE’s favourite band,” said Gary Hem-mings.

THIS week the Property Poser experts dealwith the issue of who should hold the depositon a rental property.A reader writes that he recently purchased

a unit in a sectional title complex with the spe-cific intention of renting it out.The letting agents have advised him that

theyshouldbeholding thedeposit in their trustaccount. The reader is concernedhowever thattheultimate responsibility for thedeposit, and,specifically the refunding thereof with inter-est, lies with him.He is particularly concerned that, should

there be any maladministration or misappro-priationof the deposit, hewould still be respon-sible for the refund.According to Susan Chapman from Rawson

Properties Port Elizabeth Platinum, a depositis held bya landlord to ensure that the landlordhas recourse and access to funds should, for ex-ample, the property be damaged by the tenantduring the lease period.“Once the landlord has deducted the damag-

es and any other claims that hemay legally de-duct from the deposit, he or she must refundthe remaining balance, with the interest, to thetenant.”Chapman says the Rental Housing Act regu-

lates the holding of the deposit taken by a land-lord at the start of a lease.“Thedepositmustbeheld inaninterest-bear-

ing account, with an interest rate not less thanthat of a savings account, for the benefit of thetenant.”The landlordmustprovideproofof thedepos-

it held in this manner on request from the ten-ant, said Chapman.“The Act specifically states that the landlord

is responsible for dealing with the deposit.Without taking the matter further, the readerwould be quite correct in thinking that the ulti-mate responsibility lies with him.”If, however, one examines the definitions

listed in the Act, it is evident that the concept

of the “landlord” has been expandedupon, saidStiaan Jonker of Smith Tabata Attorneys inPE.“Thus, ‘landlord’means theownerofa leased

dwelling and includes his or her duly author-ised agent, or a person who is in lawful posses-sion of a dwelling and has the right to lease orsub-lease it.”In the current instance the letting agents

would be within their rights to receive and in-vest the deposit should they fulfil the provi-sions of the definition of “landlord”, said Jonk-er.“Where the landlord is represented by a duly

authorised agent, the agent is then obliged toabide by the provision relating to the holdingof a deposit.”Jonker said in such an instance the deposit

and interest should bedealtwith in accordancewith theprovisionssetout in theEstateAgencyAffairs Act.“It would thus appear that the agents’ asser-

tion that they should hold the deposit is quitecorrect.”Should thereadernotwish this tobe thecase,

it may be possible to limit the agents’ mandateto the extent that he desires, said Jonker.“Alternatively, the reader could deal with

sidelined with a throat injury, the home side,after a tentative start – a knock-on at kickoff– gave their vociferous supporters much to

cheer about. The crowd of 42 000 – 10 000 morethan at their SuperRugby debut a fortnightearlier – had plenty to enthuse over in this re-lentless battle.There were flashes of class from centre An-

dries Strauss, 18-year-old wing Sergeal Pie-tersenand flyhalfDemetriCatrakilis –playingwith much more assurance this week and re-sponsible for all the Kings’ points. that of all team sports – with the possible ex-ceptionof cricket – rugby isdoing its shareandmore to draw players of all colours and creedstogether in a staunch, happy brotherhood!

THE epic Bell Buoy Challenge swim in Al-goa Bay will be taking place on Easter Sat-urday amid much uncertainty on what willbe happening with the 2013 Splash Festival.

Approximately 50 swimmers fromaround the country will tackle what has be-come known as the toughest Indian OceanSwim as the participants tackle the 8km

swim which takes them around the Bell Bu-oy situated some 2.5km directly off PollokBeach.

The swim has attracted international at-tention since it was established in 2009.

Without any sponsorship or funding forthe swim this year, no international partic-ipants are expected to attend and without

any prizemoney up for grabs, the attractionfor the professional South African Olympicmarathon swimmers just isn’t there.

FORMER Springbok wing, turned rugby analyst, Ash-win Willemse, has thrown his support behind the South-ern Kings.

Willemse, who was the guest of honour at the SPAREastern Cape Charity Golf Day in Port Elizabeth recent-ly, said he was “very content and impressed” with theirdominating debut performance in the Super Rugbycompetition.

“I think it was a wonderful confidence booster forthe players and also all the fans in the Eastern Cape.”

Having replaced the Lions as South Africa’s fifthfranchise in the competition, he said it wasonly natural that the team would come un-der close scrutiny and be judged more se-verely.

“It was a very challenging way thatthey entered Super Rugby, so the eyesof the rugby world were on them to seehow they would perform.

“I think they’ve answered their crit-ics exceptionally well with the waythey performed in their openinggame.”

Referring to the golf day whichraised R100 000 for the Nelson Mandela BayCommunity Chest, the 31-year-old said hefelt a great responsibility to assist with charitable ven-

tures whenever he could. “In our country we have a lotof need. As individu als, there is that responsibility onall of us to assist in whatever way we can.”

In his address to participants at the Humewood GolfClub, the former SA Player of the Year shared

his personal experiences in escaping a life ofgangsterism and violent crime through rug-by.

“I am the embodiment of the goodwill thatis out there. By sharing my story, I show the

tangible outcomes of giving. It also puts a muchbigger responsibility on a person like me to

be part of creating a pathway for others tohave the same opportunities that werepresented to me.”

Willemse, who earned 19 Test capsand went on to represent his country at

two World Cups, is one of the foundingmembers of the GreenSmile Founda-tion, alongside Breyten Paulse.“Its primary focus is sports, health

and education and we aim to help young-sters find their niche in the world.

“There’s nothing special about me.I’m just a person who was given an op-
