Or, you will have pcked up the magazine in our stand at the show. This whole magazine is more or less completely dedicated to Bauma. Although itistheresponsibilityofPDitocoverthismega-showonbehalfourourreaders, Ive found that its not so much something that we have to do, but also something that we need to do.Bauma completely dominates this spring, at least in our business. But I have said this before. More and more, big shows tend to dominate things ,which is both good and bad. The bad part is that it is almost like there is nothing besides the big shows, and yet many contractors are unable to attend them due to the costs as well as the linguistic problem. Not everybody speaks English. The local shows will still play an important role, even though the attention is directed towards the large shows. Another bad thing with mega-shows is that they sometimes take a toll on you both physically and psycologically as they really make you very tired. To be able to see everything at Bauma really takes a lot of planning and walking. So bring good shoes and pain-killers if you are coming.Butthere is, of course, a lot of good things with shows like Bauma too. First of all, it is a nice atomphere to come to Mnich. When you takein the good feeling that comes with looking at new products, you feel better about the markets future. That feeling is not an illusion. This special PDi Bauma issue is full of proof that both our manufacturers and contractors believe in the future, and that an upturn in the economy is approaching. Some markets are already seeing clear signs of that. And a show of Baumas size can play a role in speeding up the recovery. For contractors, exhibitions often provide a chance for a good deal, and this years Bauma with the rather slow economy certainly offers those chances. So for you who plan on upgrading your machinery, bring your wallet.I also want to mention that this Bauma also is special as IACDS will organise their seminars in conjunction with the show. A number of interesting speeches related to professional concrete sawing and drilling will be held. The seminars are free of charge but you need to register at www.iacds.org. Dont miss this chance. A list of the different speeches can be found on page 67.Even though this issue is full of information about Bauma, you fnd a number of other interesting stories. We have two special features about new breakers, and new mobile recycling and screening equipment. In addition, we have a number of reports like one on the new Swedish demolition contractor DemCom, and another on the manufacturer of the smart quick coupling system OilQuick, plus the story about the Dutch diamond tool manufacturer Diacom. And, of course, there is the 30-plus page Bauma Show Special.IfyoudoattendBauma,Iwould like invite you to visit the PDi booth, if. You fnd me and some of my colleagues in hall A1 booth 132. Finally, enjoy this issue, Bauma and the spring.6 PDi Issue 2 - 2010 Bauma specIal aprIl - mayWords from the PresidentTime for the big gatheringJan [email protected] each operation, and who would check it to see if it was ftted correctly?TheAssociationhaslookedintothis problem and come to an agreement with Brit-ish manufacturers that trailer rigs will conform to having a guard ftted that would disconnect power to the motor if itis removed or opened at the front to gain access to the drill. The Health and Safety Executive has agreed with and approved this concept. On the subject of hand drills, diamond and tungsten twist drills, the Executive thought that it was unnecessary to have a guard. In my 45 years in the trade, I have never heardofapersonbeinghurtbythedrill. However, I have heard of a person injured by a drilling rig spinning around the drill when it was not fxed in place correctly. The British Drilling and Sawing Associa-tion is putting forward an argument that this actionisnotnecessary.Wewouldliketo know if any other country or association has had similar problems. If so, please report it to the IACDS at [email protected], as I intend to raise the subject at the meeting in Salzburg onMonday26April2010.Iwouldnot liketoseethisbecomeaworldproblem or directive.Everybodyiswelcometoattendthe meeting in Salzburg.Best regardsPeter WhitePresident IACDSGuarding of drill rigsAlthough we are just coming out of reces-sion, a large number of companies are still investing in training in drilling and sawing. In my opinion, we now have some of the most trained and skilled workers on construction sitesinrecentyears.Healthandsafetyis the top priority on construction sites by the construction management, drilling and sawing management and the operators themselves, andtheBritishdrillingcompanieshavean excellent safety record. It has come to light in Great Britain that Health and Safety Executive wants us to guard all diamond drilling rigs and cut the electrical supply to the motor if the guard is removed or opened to gain access to the drill. However, they also say we can allow the drill to turn slowly if the front of the guard was opened. Thatseemstocontradictthemotorbeing disabled if the guard is opened. The Association havepointed out that all our drilling rigs meet European mechanical directiveandCEregulations.Becausenot all world manufactures of drilling rigs supply guardsunderCEregulations, wearenot allowedtomodifytherigsasthesewould invalidate manufacturers warranty. We also pointed out the how unpractical guarding the rigs would be drilling up to tight walls, corners, between pipes etc.Another problem would be for the op-erator to confrm that he has a good fow of water if the guard was not made of a clear, transparentmaterial.Theguard would have to contract in and out with thedrillmanytimestoconstantlykeep the drill guarded. As for guard size, would we have tohaveadifferentguard foreachsizeofdrillthat isfrom25mmto1m in diameter? We are still in the bottom of the crisis, observes Dick van der Starre of FRD Europe, and we do not know when and to which extent it will recover.Manufacturers may be in for a long wait.According to An-tonio Cannao of Italian breaker manufacturer Promove, We feel the level of global sales wi l l stay substantial-ly unchanged for the next coupleof years, due togeneral overbuilding activity in the re-cent years and also due to the effects of thefinancialcrisis on the public balance of many countries.Alongwithdevel-opingtheircapacityfor patience,thepervasiveun-certaintyhasalsotestedthe companiescommitmenttothe fundamentalqualitiesthathave longguidedtheirgrowth, rather thanadopttheshort-termband-aid measures such as price cuts that mayprovideimmediatecash, but sometimes lead to longer-term stability issues. Customers expectations, in my opinion, have not changed, Cammao says. They look for high performing and reliable equipment, with a good level of technical support in terms of fast repairing and deliveries of spare parts.Cammao adds, however, that because the breaker market now has an incredible numberofcompetitorsfromallover the world, some action and focuses are needed in order to compete in this new jungle. Great attention to reliability and after-sale supportis the only way to retain customers al-ready using our equipment, he says. A company must also constantly evolve the technical features and performance of its products, as we have with our XP line of breakers, and keep pricing at reasonable level. That kind of resolve has also worked in FRDs case, van der Starre says. From 2007 to 2009, we increased our market penetra-tionformedium-sizebreakersinSpain,averydepressed market,from5.9to9.9percentnotwithsubstantialprice reductions, but by maintaining our philosophy of high quality, low maintenance and good performance in connection with a stable dealer network, he says. Only one third of the total lifecycle cost is the investment itself, explains Torsten Ahr, the companys Marketing Manager Hydraulic Attachments. The rest is operator cost, energy con-sumption, parts wear, and so forth.Evidence of Atlas Copcos efforts can be found in three new heavy hydraulic breaker models. The HB 2000, with its service weight of 2000 kg, offers 10% more power than its predecessor, the HB 200. The new 3100 kg HB 3100 and 4700 kg HB 4700 de-liver 5% and 13% more power than their predecessor models. All three breakers offer an improved power-to-weight ratio, enabling smaller attachments and carrier units to do more work. They are also equipped with Atlas Copcos PowerAdapt system, which automatically shuts off the breaker in case of an overpower-ing through the carrier. In order to ensure that our customers can make full use of the equipment in terms of effciency and maximum power, this decision was a logical step, Ahr says.Other features of Atlas Copcos heavy-duty hydraulic breaker line are also found in the three new models. An entirely new impact mechanism minimizes the discharge of vibration to the excavator, which in turn reduces vibration stress experienced by operators. In addition, the combination of a redesigned body, fully closed frame with rubber plugged service points and new, worldwide patented rod arrangement considerably reduce sound levels. All FX series models are available with Standard, Silent, and Extra-Silent frame designs.Designed for mini-excavators from 0,5 to 7 tonnes, FRDs FX series hydraulic breakers have an operation weight of 66 to 300 kg. Additionally, for indoor work, electro-pneumatics became the tool of choice. The latest iteration in that technology is Hiltis new TE 3000-AVR Breaker, which boasts the power ofanairtool, atthesameweightlevel, without the need for an air compressor to deliver explosive breaking power and exceptional mobility.Weighing65pounds,theTE3000-AVR delivers 50 foot-pounds of impact energy to break up to six tons of material per hour, at rate compa-rable with a 60- to 65-pound air tool. The TE 3000-AVR also offers contractors easy, fexible operation from anywhere on the jobsite. Be-cause it does not require an air compressor, the TE 3000-AVR allows contractors to have their tool set up and working before the compressor is even towed to the location and hooked up. For maximum versatility, the TE 3000-AVR accepts standard 1-1/8 inch chisels, same as air-powered tools. In addition, the TE 3000-AVR incorporates Hiltis sub-chassis active vibration reduction (AVR) system to dramatically cut the vibration passed along to the operator during operation, reducing fatigue and allowing them to work longer. An active cooling system reduces wear and tear on the motor, electronics and hammering mechanism. And, the TE 3000-AVR features a brushless SR motor that eliminates the need to replace carbon brushes allowing longer intervals between service and twice the expected motor life. For smaller applications, theres Hiltis new TE1500-AVR. Ideal for everything from concrete foundation removal to dig-ging in clay, to penetrations for pipes and electrical boxes, The TE1500-AVR also offers extended durability. Hiltis TE 1500-AVR is also backed by Hilti Lifetime Service, a unique service agreement that includes two years of no-cost coverage. Baldwin adds that for 2010 and beyond, the market is asking for more, mainly a method for breaking concrete that is more productive, and a tool that is easier to use and maintain, and that cost less overall to operate. But this is due solely to the poor development in commercial construction. Civil engineering, by contrast, is expected to grow by 2.7%, mainly because of the extensive economic stimulus programmes in many EU member states. In 2011, Europe-wide building investment is predicted to expand by 2%, again driven by 3% increasedinvestment in civil engineering projects. The slight downturn in overall production in 2010 is due to the negative effect from countries such as Spain, Ireland, Finland and Portugal, where prices have fallen dramatically following the end of the boom in residential property. In the reform economies of Central Europe, however, growth in construction activity is set to expand by 6% as early as 2010, accelerating to 10% in 2011. The engine behind this growth will continue to be Poland.RussiaRussia has also been affected by the international economic crisis, coupled in this case with rapidly falling income for the state from energy exports, a result of falling prices on the world market. Never-theless, building activity overall has stayed stable in 2009.
