• Children remembered ANZAC Day and Room 5 children were visited by Mark’s

father, who talked about Mark’s grandfather who went off to the First World War at the age of 21. We saw his handwritten diary with entries from May 1916…

• Judi Billcliff visited and entertained us with her lovely poems and stories

• Some of our past pupils from Kaiapoi High School, including Deputy Head Girl Gia Hurring, visited to tell our Year 8s about high school.

• Children (and one parent!) took on a fitness challenge and trained hard for the school cross country in Week 4.

Luke, Walter, Solomon and Blake B were selected to compete in the zone finals for Years 5-8 at Loburn in Week 5. Special congratulations to Luke, who was selected to represent Pegasus zone in the Year 8 Boys section at the Canterbury Primary Schools Cross Country next Wednesday.

• We also had a wonderful “healthy breakfast” focus on 10th June with the Jamie Oliver and Food Revolution Day.

Welcome …to Elsie Earle (R1) and Layton Smith (R4), who recently started at Ouruhia. We have been getting quite a lot of inquiries about enrolments lately as word spreads about what we have to offer here, and two pre-schools will be joining us to view the Court Theatre’s school production of Matariki on the 4th July.

Reports and Parent-Teacher Discussions Mid-year progress reports for Year 4-8 children go home on Friday 1st July, with Parent-Teacher meetings being held on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th July. Some children in Years 1-3 will also receive reports at this time, depending on the anniversary dates of when they started school. Here is a reminder of how reporting timetables differ for Years 1-3 and Years 4-8:

• For Years 1-3, children’s reports will be sent home after they have been at school for 1 year, 2 years and 3 years…i.e. on their anniversary since starting school. (This will normally be around their 6th, 7th and 8th birthdays). There will also be an interim report sent home 6 months before these anniversaries. NB These Yr1-3 reports replace the mid-year and end-of-year reports that the children have had in the past, and bring us into line with Ministry Of Education changes in reporting requirements for National Standards.

• Year 4-8 children will receive their written reports mid-year and at the end of the year, as we have done in the past. The mid-year reports will not be quite as detailed as in the past because the detail will be talked about at the face-to-face meetings held shortly after the reports go home.

• The front page of the reports will include comments showing how your child shows the Ouruhia Learner Qualities: Thinking; Independence; Caring & Sharing; and having a Can-do Attitude.

• End of year reports will include graphs showing improvement and progress over several years

• Parents are encouraged to talk with teachers at any time of the year about children’s progress, attitude, social relationships and ways we can strengthen home-school partnerships.

Please return the slip or email Raewyn [email protected] for an appointment time for Parent-Teacher meetings on 5th and 6th July. Please email [email protected] or see Mark if you have some ideas about making our reporting process clearer.

News from the Board • Our annual reports (including finances and student achievement) have been

finalised by our auditors and submitted to the Ministry of Education. A “short version” of the annual report will be emailed to parents, and also displayed in the school foyer, along with the full version if anyone wants to look at it. Copies are also on our wiki site here.

• Board elections were held recently for two positions with Lyn Bates being elected, and the other position now needing to be filled either by appointment or by another election.

• Next Board meeting…Monday 27th June, 6.00 p.m. News from the PTA Kia ora Ouruhia families, The PTA has grown in numbers since our last meeting and we welcome our new members, Becky Sullivan (Riley & Boston’s Mum), Lisa Neill (Claudia’s Mum) and Cherie Edmonston (Phoebe & Finn’s Mum) to the PTA team. Our heartfelt thanks to these wonderful women who have joined us. As a new and improved team our first mission is to hold our winter school disco! To be held on Friday 1st of July from 6 – 8pm (whole school). In keeping with our recent Jamie Oliver Food Revolution Day we are offering much healthier snacks and drinks for the kids this time. Those with younger children are welcome to collect them at 7pm as sometimes two hours of disco excitement is too much for the little ones. Parents of course are welcome to stay. In other news we continue to obtain quotes for the upgrade of the school pool and will keep you posted as progress is made. Should you wish to join us in our meetings or just come along for a chat please tap one of us on the shoulder or get a message to us through Raewyn in the office. The PTA work along the lines of....we do what we can, when we can. Keep warm this winter everyone! Your PTA Team....Leneke Cox, Matt Cox, Angela Maguire, Sophie Keown, Becky Sullivan, Lisa Neill, Cherie Edmonston and Ange McDonald. Please ‘like’ our Ouruhia School PTA Facebook page – we use this page as an easy form of communication with you. Or email us at [email protected]
