As t he president , I?m excit ed t o m eet and get t o know everybody, and I look forward t o addressing t he challenges and goals of t he club t o t he best of m y abil i t ies. New Hampshire Beek eeper Prof i le

Ask five beekeepers a question and you will get six answers. So much depends on the particular hive and the individual beekeeper. But in a new series for the NH Beekeepers newsletter, we will ask beekeepers from around the state about their practices.

Nam e: Scott Coleman

Hom et own: Barrington, N.H.

CLub: Seacoast Beekeeping Association

Years of Beekeeping: 8-9 years, has about 12 hives in various locations .

What is your favor it e aspect of beekeeping?

I like watching them work. I like to see what is going on.

Advice t o new beekeepers? Don?t give up when you lose your bees. It can be really disappointing when you have put in a lot of time in and they don?t make it. But just keep at it. When I treat, I write it right on the box. Or you can write it on a piece of duct tape. I start treating at the end of July and try to do everybody at once. You want to get the mite loads down in August so those bees will get you through the winter.

Who are your m ent ors? Ben C. and Florence. They are so knowledgeable.

Favor it e product / t ool/ resource?

You can never have too many hive tools. I am always setting one down somewhere.

I make a feeder using a large empty peanut butter jar. I drill three small holes and then I place that on top of my hives.

I also love shaving boxes? they are great for keeping extra materials, such as smoker fuel near the hive.

The research com m it t ee along with the NHBA executive board would like to thank everyone who has donated to the NHBA research fund in 2016. These donations have allowed us to contribute to several honey bee research efforts including: Project Apis-M?s research fund ($500),

Randy Oliver?s research efforts ($500 used toward hive monitoring devices for pesticides and mite levels,

UC Davis Mead Research ($300),

Urban Beekeeping Lab & Bee Sanctuary ($300 ? Dr. Noah Wilson Rich?s research group),

?Homesick: Effects of Migratory Beekeeping on Honey Bee Disease ($500 ? 2017 research conducted by a team from UVM & Zac Lamas).

In addition, we would like to recognize S Formulators, a Henniker-based company, which makes body care products from beeswax and honey, for their on-going and generous support. You can learn more at their website http://www.sformulators.com.

NHBA has made three research donations this year. The first was a $500 donation to the Project Apis-M who sponsors honeybee research throughout the US:    http://projectapism.org/

The second was a $500 donation to the Randy Oliver?s research work. He will be using these funds for his research on Oxalic Acid & Varroa.   Randy publishes his finding on his website at: http://scientificbeekeeping.com/.

The third was a $500 donation to the Urban Beekeeping Laboratory and Bee Sanctuary (https://beesanctuary.org/) to support the continue research efforts of Dr. Noah Wilson Rich (one of our speakers at the spring meeting).

If you have suggestions on other honeybee research organizations that we can support through our research fund, please let us (Heather Achilles & Karen Eaton) know.
