Maximum IP Backhaul Capacity & Agility!

Native Ethernet MW Backhaul

Everything Goes All-IP... So Do MW Transport Networks

The capacity crunch effected from the ever-increasing demand for broadband services poses significant challenges on access and backhaul technologies.

Mobile LTE/LTE-A networks rapidly evolve to flat all-IP architectures, while operators adopt new radio access design paradigms by also deploying small cells and HetNets, all relying on end-to-end Ethernet connectivity.

Along with backhaul network transformation, Carrier Ethernet and IP/ MPLS services are rapidly being provisioned as the preferred transport technologies. Convergence around all-IP is already happening, while the SDN evolution is under way.

Packet Microwave (MW) is the technology of choice for backhaul applications, having the lowest cost-per-bit and the fastest deployment cycle among other transmission alternatives. Packet MW transport solutions addressing the requirements of next-generation IP networks, by offering excessive capacity with market-leading 4096-QAM modulations and by providing a converged backhaul aggregation base for small-cell expansions, is the smartest investment for the future.

[Fig. 1] The OmniBAS™ highly-valued solution: All services over one transport technology

Converging to All-IP with OmniBASTM

OmniBAS™ is a next generation packet MW portfolio for operators demanding a cost-effective and technologically-advanced solution for their backhaul network.

OmniBAS™ ideally: ● implements the MW access & aggregation segments of 3G+ / LTE / LTE-A / heterogeneous networks,

● extends the reach of fixed broadband to rural areas, and ● rapidly deploys IP communication and control links for utility companies and governmental agencies.

It allows highly-flexible IP link configurations, from all-outdoor and split-mount at tail sites, to high nodal implementations at central sites, all from the same platform.

Facilitating an evolved approach toward smooth all-IP migration, OmniBAS™ enables operators to deliver high-speed IP services utilizing the market-leading modulations of 4096-QAM.

Traditional circuit-based services are seamlessly emulated with Pseudo-Wire (PW) technology and are delivered with assured high quality.

Incorporating highly-efficient packet traffic handling mechanisms and radio bandwidth utilization techniques, OmniBAS™ assures carrier-class service delivery with highest availability. The uniform handling of all types of traffic flows over IP allows the finest of QoS granularity, achieves optimum usage of radio capacity and enables a true convergence to all-IP.

Solution DescriptionOmniBAS™ is a native Ethernet wireless transport platform employing state-of-the-art MW packet technology. It achieves excessive throughput – up to 2 Gbit/s on a single link – for LTE and other data-demanding backhaul applications.

OmniBAS™ incorporates sophisticated Radio Resource Control (RRC), for best optimization of the available radio capacity, as well as hitless adaptive modulation (4-QAM up to 4096-QAM), which increases throughput and service availability in all weather conditions. Capacity is boosted by combining cutting-edge Link Aggregation (RLA), or XPIC techniques, with advanced packet optimization like dense IP headers compression.

The table below gives the OmniBAS™ maximum line rates for various channel sizes and link configurations:

Maximum Line Rate (Gbit/s)

Modulation

Channel

56 MHz(1+0)

56 MHz (XPIC)2 x 56 MHz (2+0)112 MHz (1+0)(1)

4096-QAM 0.91 1.80

2048-QAM 0.83 1.65

1024-QAM 0.75 1.50

Besides capacity maximization, RLA in particular allows for easier network management, as many links can be combined in a single radio link, while it offers increased availability by automatically balancing load over all available air links.

Network configurations are flexible, ranging from all-outdoor single links to nodal implementations for traffic aggregation sites, while utilizing E1, STM-1 and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

The OmniBAS™ platform, which is offered in split-mount and all-outdoor configurations, comprises:

● OmniBAS™-2Wc, the new addition to the family, is a compact 1 RU indoor unit (IDU) available in two versions, with one or two embedded modems. It employs a fanless chassis design providing hardened characteristics in extreme environments.

● OmniBAS™-2W and OmniBAS™-4W, which are compact (1 RU) IDUs with modular architecture(2) – the higher nodal 2 RU solution (OmniBAS™-8W)(3). The available radio configurations include: 1+0 ... 8+0, 1+1 / 2+2 / 3+3 / 4+4, XPIC(4) 2+0 ... 4+4 / 8+0, depending on IDU model.

● Complete family of outdoor units (ODUs) covering a wide range of operating frequencies (6 / 7 / 8 / 11 / 13 / 15 / 18 / 23 / 26 / 28 / 32 / 38 GHz). Support for modulations up to 4096-QAM.

● OmniBAS™ all-outdoor radio, which is based on the OSDR platform, supporting up to 4096-QAM modulations and 1+0, 1+1 and 2+0 configurations.

● OmniBAS™-4P half-rack 1 RU IDU supporting up to four OSDR radios through PonE-enabled Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

● Antennas, either integrated or standalone.

OmniBAS™ provides redundancy for ODU / modem / controller / Gigabit Ethernet, also allowing the implementation of RSTP and the more advanced controls of Ethernet protected rings, as per ITU-T G.8032, of carrier-grade sub-50 ms recovery switching time. The efficient timing capabilities include traditional G.703-based synchronization and Ethernet synchronization based on Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588v2 standards. End-to-end Ethernet service management is ensured through standards-based OAM functions and a powerful NMS system.

htsIncreasing Backhaul Agility

The OmniBAS™ family of products constitutes a single IP technology investment for current and future needs, providing superior deployment flexibility – from all-outdoor units to higher nodal compact solutions – for the most demanding backhaul network applications.

OmniBAS™ OSDR is intended for zero-footprint last-mile IP backhaul of 3G+/4G and small-cell deployments.

OmniBAS™-2Wc/-2W are the cost-optimized IDUs for tail links requiring up to two radios, whereas OmniBAS™-4W is more appropriate for nodal sites of up to four radios. The OmniBAS™-8W further enhances deployment agility by supporting eight radios in a 2 RU IDU and by providing full hardware redundancy.

OmniBAS™-4W/-8W constitute the ideal solution for excessive throughput requirements, as they both support protected (2+2) XPIC nodes.

OmniBAS™-8W perfectly fits sites with high-aggregation needs as it offers 6+6 Gigabit Ethernet / (1+1) 10 Gigabit Ethernet(1), up to 64 x E1 and four STM-1 VC-12 interfaces. OmniBAS™-8W can be flexibly positioned at the aggregation network and/or close to the control site (RNC / BSC), where it restores the PWEs back to their initial TDM form.

The OmniBAS™ all-outdoor and split-mount nodes are fully compatible and can be used according to operator site requirements.

Figure 2 illustrates the wide range of deployment scenarios enabled by the OmniBAS™ comprehensive portfolio, making clear its agility advantages in an all-IP backhaul network.
