For more information, please visit www.yealands.co.nz Writing Tips and Tools - Edition #1 Welcome to the first edition of tips and tricks to help your child(ren) develop into skillful writers. Each fortnight we will send home a new strategy or tool for you to use as well as sharing forthcoming writing topics for you to talk about with your child. Tip: The Role of Oral Language The basis of good writing is good talk - as before a child is able to write about a topic they need to already have the relevant words or vocabulary. Teachers will often say “if children can talk about it then they can write about it”. One vital way you can help your child to develop a rich and varied vocabulary is to build a climate of words at home. Go places and see things with your child, then talk about what has been seen, heard, smelled, tasted, touched. We are lucky at Glenbrook to live close to the natural beauty of coasts, beaches, fields, creeks, streams and farm land. A visit to any of these places will provide the stimulus for some great conversations and learning. Another option is to talk about experiences your child has had - from seeing friends and family, going to the park, helping out on the farm, building huts, fishing/hunting or weekend sport. Lastly, exploring and discussing changes in seasons or the weather (such as the thick fog we have been having recently or the frosts) can provide a bank of describing words. GLENBROOK CROSS COUNTRY DAY 2017 Our Glenbrook School Cross Country will be on the 6th July (Thursday Week 10 Term 2) The programme will be as follows: (These start times are approximate) 9:00 am Roll call in class 9:10 Assemble on top courts. The options for Calf Club for those students who do have an animal are –

The garden option for Calf Club this year is to create a unique and creative terrarium. Terrariums are like a mini garden or forest that exists in a glass container which is usually, but not always, sealed to replicate an ecosystem. Your terrarium must be set up in a way that it will be able to sustain the life of the plants within, such as access for watering. A poster is required to show your plan, why you chose the plants and materials you chose, and the terrarium assembly. Your poster will make up 50% of your total mark. We will provide more information for those who are interested in this option. The PTA option for Calf Club this year is a transportable outdoor family game. You can take the concept of an indoor game and then recreate and enlarge it for use outside, or even create your own game from scratch. Judges will be looking for durability and originality. Your originality may come through in the materials used, tweaking the classic game rules, or in the game itself being an original. No poster is required for this option, however you will be required to provide an instruction/ rule card to accompany your game at Calf Club day. We will provide more information for those who are interested in this option. JAMMIES IN JUNE - Kidz First are collecting NEW flannelette jammies to keep kids warm this winter. Please consider donating some new jammies at the school office for this great cause.
