GOLDEN JUBILEE NATIONAL SEMINAR ON ORGANIZED BY Central Institute of Fisheries Education Deemed University (ICAR), Kolkata Centre 32-GN Block, Sector-V, Salt Lake City Kolkata-700091 ABOUT CIFE KOLKATA CENTRE CIFE, Kolkata Centre has historical importance in imparting fisheries education in India. It was established in 1947 as 'Inland Fisheries Training Centre' (IFTC) under Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore in West Bengal. This Centre was solely responsible for providing trained manpower to fisheries sector in the country as during that time there was no fisheries college or university. It was taken over by CIFE in October, 1967. During 1997-98, the Centre was shifted to its own building located at Salt Lake City, Kolkata. The Centre was conducting one year post- graduate certificate course on "Inland Fisheries Management and Administration", which was upgraded to one year semester pattern entitled "Post-graduate diploma in Inland Fisheries" (PGDIF) from 2000-2001 onwards. The PGDIF was replaced by a new course 'Professional Development Progrmame' (PDP) comprising four modules since 2009. A six months Certificate course on Entrepreneurship Development Programmes in 'Fish Processing Management and Trade' (EDP) sponsored by NFDB has also been initiated since 2009. From 1961 to 2009, 24 M. F. Sc. students, 82 trainees on P.G. Diploma on Inland Fisheries and 1584 trainees on P.G. Certificate course on Inland Fisheries Management and Administration have passed out from this Centre. BACKGROUND Aquaculture is the fastest growing enterprise within the agricultural sector and plays a significant role in improving livelihoods and nutrition of rural mass. Indian aquaculture has demonstrated a six fold growth over the last two decades, with freshwater aquaculture contributing over 95% of the total aquaculture production. The production of carp in freshwater and shrimps in brackishwater form the major areas of activities. The three Indian major carps, namely catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita) and mrigal (Cirrihinus mrigala) contribute the bulk of production, followed by silver carp, grass carp and common carp forming a second important group. In the face of our envisaged research effort and attention for decades on increasing fish production in the country, the major emphasis was laid on breeding, seed production and culture of only the fast growing carp species. Unfortunately in this process, little time was spared to consider, explore and exploit a valuable additional opportunity of managing multitudes of indigenous fish resources viz. minor carp (Amblypharyngodon mola, Puntius sps.), medium carp (Labeo bata, L. gonius and others), catfish (Clarius batrachus, Heteropneustes fossilis, Ompok pabda), murrels (Channa sps) and other air-breathing fishes that offer similar or even larger benefits in terms of food and nutritional security to the nation. Despite the fact that aquaculture is growing at an extraordinary pace of more than 8% per year globally, the stark reality is that the food fish supply per caput in the low- income food deficit countries is currently about half the world average. This situation in India is not much different even today. With the interplay of rising domestic needs, increasing cost of fish and a somewhat plateau in fish production in marine and open water capture fisheries sector, fish becomes a less affordable commodity for the common people. It is imperative, therefore, to intensify scientific research to exploit all alternative means to increase production and productivity from natural aquatic resources to their optimum level for sustainable aquaculture. On the occasion of Golden Jubilee year (1961-2010) of Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, this National Seminar is being organized to promote the culture and conservation of indigenous fish species which may support rural livelihood and the national food security. MAJOR THEMES Underutilized aquatic resources for their utilization through aquaculture Spawning and hatchery technology for indigenous species Indigenous ornamental fish, their propagation and trade Augmentation of wetland productivity through judicious utilization of indigenous species Health, nutrition and genetic concern of indigenous species Biodiversity and conservation of indigenous fish species. BACKGROUND

Aquaculture is the fastest growing enterprise within the agricultural sector and plays a significant role in improving livelihoods and nutrition of rural mass. Unfortunately in this process, little time was spared to

consider, explore and exploit a valuable additional opportunity of managing multitudes of indigenous fish resources viz. minor carp (Amblypharyngodon mola, Puntius sps.), medium carp (Labeo bata, L. gonius and others), catfish (Clarius batrachus, Heteropneustes fossilis, Ompok pabda), murrels (Channa sps) and other air-breathing fishes that offer similar or even larger benefits in terms of food and nutritional security to the nation. Despite the fact that aquaculture is growing at an extraordinary pace of more than 8% per year globally, the stark reality is that the food fish supply per caput in the low-income food deficit countries is currently about half the world average.
