APPLICATION, SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL AID THE APPLICATION PROCESS The Admissions Office uses a rolling admissions policy. We carefully review each candidate's application in order to render a decision representing the best interests of both the candidate and the school. Each candidate must submit a completed application with the $50 application fee. The candidate’s current school must send official transcripts and recommendation forms to the Office of Admissions. In addition, we review each candidate's scores from our entrance exam, which is offered several times throughout the school year. We strongly recommend scheduling a day-long “shadow visit” at which time the applicant will be interviewed by a member of the Admissions Committee. It is the responsibility of the applicant and his family to ensure that all application materials, including official transcripts and recommendations, are submitted to the Office of Admissions. Transcripts and recommendations must be submitted directly to the Office of Admissions by the applicant’s current school. When the application process is complete, the family will be notified by mail of the Admissions Committee’s decision. Accepted candidates must submit a $1,000 deposit (non-refundable, but credited toward tuition) to reserve a place in the grade for which they have been accepted. SCHOLARSHIPS Each year, Devon Prep awards merit scholarships to applicants who have demonstrated academic achievement and who display potential for continued success. Top scorers on the entrance exam will be notified of their eligibility to qualify for a scholarship.* There are a number of merit scholarships for students, including: ●Rev. Ladislaus Magyar Scholarship - Honoring a Piarist Father who taught for 49 years. ●Martin J. Devine Scholarship - A memorial for the father of five Devon graduates. ●Kevin Flatley Scholarship - A memorial scholarship in honor of a former student. ●Martin W. Bowen Scholarship - A memorial scholarship for a former teacher. ●Rev. Stephen Bendik Scholarship - This scholarship was established as a memorial for a Piarist Father who taught

at all four of the Piarist schools in the United States. ●Stephen and Bernice Senye Scholarship Fund - An endowment established by the first headmaster of Devon Prep. ●Headmaster's Scholarships - Awarded each year by the Headmaster to students displaying leadership and

scholarship, characteristics of a Devon Prep student. *Notification of scholarship eligibility is NOT a notification of acceptance. A completed application (including recommendations and transcripts) must be submitted before an admission or scholarship decision can or will be made. FINANCIAL AID Those who wish to be considered for financial aid must submit their previous year’s tax return to Devon Prep and submit a completed Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) to School & Student Services (SSS), administered by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). Because resources are limited, we recommend applying for aid as early as possible. We begin reviewing financial applications as early as February of the school year prior to enrollment. For faster processing of your financial aid application, please apply online at sss.nais.org. Paper applications are available from Devon Prep upon request. MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL CURRICULUM Middle School Our curriculum for grades 6, 7 and 8 focuses on Devon Prep's statement of philosophy and on teaching the skills and content necessary for success in the Upper School. The Middle School has classrooms located in Calasanctius Hall and St. Anthony Hall, and also uses the Gymnasium, Music Room, and Chapel. Care is taken to develop a Middle School Community, but there are also times when Upper School and Middle School students share learning experiences. The Middle School core curriculum establishes the foundation for the continuum of study leading to graduation from the Devon Prep Upper School. Upper School The curriculum will prepare every student for college level studies. Graduation requirements include four years of English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Religion; three years of a Modern Foreign Language and Social Science; and two years of Latin and Computer Science. Electives (*) are available in the senior year of Upper School when students have completed most of their requirements. Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses fulfill graduation requirements and provide the opportunity to earn college credit. Each class meets at a different time each day. Students enjoy a varying schedule, rather than a repeating daily routine. Small class sizes allow for ample student-teacher interaction during class.

COLLEGE PLANNING & PLACEMENT The College Counseling Program begins in high school when the director meets with students and parents to discuss trends in grades and extracurricular activities. Freshman students will take the PSAT, the first of three times, and begin working on their activities resume. Students begin meeting with college representatives in the fall of their junior year. In the spring they attend an information session with their parents on the college selection process, standardized testing programs and the application process. Students will also hold personal interviews with the director who will review their essay, guide the search process, and prepare them for the college admission interview. In senior year, students meet with the director to review applications. Throughout the high school years, students and parents are invited to a variety of presentations from experts in their field, ranging from college interviewing, college funding to the “Letting Go” process. The College Counseling Program has enjoyed considerable success. 100% of our graduates continue their education at a four-year institution of higher learning.

ATHLETICS The Devon Prep Athletic Department seeks to develop loyalty, sportsmanship, perseverance and leadership in each of our students. We encourage students to participate in athletics, granting each student the opportunity to continue playing his favorite sport or to try something new. One of the great benefits of a small school such as Devon Prep is the opportunity for students to compete at a high level. Relative to many of their peers at larger schools, Devon students enjoy an excellent opportunity to compete at the varsity level on a regular basis.

PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION OF DEVON PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Devon Preparatory School is a private Roman Catholic college preparatory school, owned and conducted by the Piarist fathers, for young men in grades six through twelve. The Piarist Order, founded over four centuries ago by St. Joseph Calasanctius, is dedicated to the education of youth. The Devon Prep community of Piarists, lay teachers, administrators, staff, parents, alumni, and friends is committed to the intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development of all its students. Small classes and a focused liberal arts curriculum encourage intellectual curiosity and creativity on the part of the students in their search for Truth through the pursuit of knowledge. A diverse extracurricular program promotes social growth and nurtures leadership, individual skills, and personal interests. Devon Prep’s safe and supportive atmosphere provides an environment in which students can confidently excel academically within a Christian culture which fosters a love of God, a positive self-image, and a respect for others. Guided by the tradition of a Piarist education rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ, Devon Prep graduates are prepared to be responsible, compassionate leaders who serve God by providing service to humanity.

HISTORY OF THE PIARIST ORDER

St. Joseph Calasanctius (the Latinized version of his original name, Calasanz), the founder of the Piarist Order, was born in Peralta de la Sal, Spain, in 1556. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1583, and nine years later he moved to Rome. St. Joseph was very moved by the intellectual and moral misery of the poor children of Rome. Therefore, with the permission of Pope Clement VIII, he opened a free school for them at St. Dorothy's Church in 1597. This school, which was open to every child regardless of religion, is believed to be the world's first modern elementary school.

On March 25, 1617, with the permission of Pope Paul V, St. Joseph Calasanctius and fourteen other men became the first members of a new religious congregation. On November 18, 1621, Pope Gregory XV raised this congregation to the rank of a religious order, calling it the Order of the Pious Schools (in short, the Piarists.) The abbreviation "Sch.P." following the name of a Piarist means Scholarum Piarum (“of the Pious Schools”).

The Piarists profess the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. In addition, according to the wishes of St. Joseph, members of the Order also profess a fourth vow to dedicate their lives to the education of the young.

St. Joseph Calasanctius died on August 25, 1648, at St. Pantaleo's Church in Rome, where his body is still buried. Pope Clement XIII declared him a saint in 1767; in 1948, Pope Pius XII named him Patron of Christian Schools. During the lifetime of St. Joseph Calasanctius, the Piarists began to grow in numbers and in schools.

Today, more than 1400 Piarists work in 220 communities in 31 countries, including the United States, Argentina, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, Equatorial Guinea, France, Gabon, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Poland, Romania, Russia, Senegal, Spain, and Venezuela. Over 115,000 students attend Piarist schools in these countries.

Devon Preparatory School admits students of any race, color, or national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school, and does not discriminate on the basis of religion, race, color, or national or ethnic origin in administration of our educational policies, scholarship programs, athletic or other school administered programs.
