While the Boy Scouts ofAmerica are not an option in theEnglish Montreal School BoardCareer Exploration Program, theirmotto should be plastered on everyapplication form.

Be prepared. From soaring through the sky

in the aviation industry with FlightSafety International to filmingaward winning stories about it withApartment 11 Productions, theCareer Exploration Program ismeant to do just that: prepare eachand every Secondary IV and Vstudent for the bright and excitingfuture which awaits them.

While planning their next 30 years at the tender age of 15 might seem farfetched for some students, ultimately, theeducational choices in high schoolbecome the foundation for theirfuture. With that in mind TaniaPercio of the EMSB StudentServices Department has coor -dinated a program which allowsevery student to hop into their own

Delorean and take their future fora test drive.

“We want to give students theopportunity to engage in practicalwork in the field of their choice,”said Percio. “It’s one thing to readand dream about a career, but it’s totally different to be exposedto the rigors, responsibilities andenvironment for a whole day.”

Such responsibilities take centrestage at Flight Safety International,a company which specializes in

aviation training. For students witha keen interest in the aviationindustry, spending a day up closeand personal with pilots serves asan eye opener, not only exposingthem to the basic requirementsneeded to merely step into acockpit, but more importantly, tothe level of commitment requiredwhich in flight, is the differencebetween life and death.

Although Flight SafetyInternational is perhaps the mostextreme of placements, JenniferGlasgow, an independent fashiondesigner and co-owner of BoutiqueGeneral 54, kept students on theground and opened up her doorsto those with a keen eye forcouture. Bringing students into herstudio, Glasgow introduced themto the entire design process, fromconception to sewing and finallyinto to her store, where after yearsof hard work, her designer clothesare, with her at the controls, flyingoff the shelves.

Beauty in fashion is akin tocreativity in design and studentswere able to experience this first

hand with Marc Kandalaft’sunique brand of Parisian-inspiredgraphic design and photography.Kandalaft, the founder of MarcKandalaft Design, opened up hisworld and let the future of thedesign world live on the cuttingedge of the latest trends and atleast for a day, receive a taste ofthe industry and the uniqueabilities one needs to thrive in it.

Definitely not designed byKandalaft or inspired by Glasgow,

the Concordia Stingers track suit worn by Dustin Traylen atExcellent Ice in Kirkland does notrepresent anything close to thelatest in fashion trends, however, his athletic experience and adviceis second to none. As far removedfrom aviation and design aspossible, Traylen, an elitegoaltender until a rash of injuriesended his career, opened up thedoors of Excellent Ice to fivestudents who shared the dream hehad: playing in the NationalHockey League. Providing themwith a session of on-ice training aswell as some meaningful discussiontime, he explained that even thebest prospect faces a steep up-hillclimb before receiving his chancein the spotlight.

Yet, for Cassandra Castronovoor Maxime Ianniciello, being inthe spotlight isn’t their goal as bothwere able to experience the actionbehind the scenes as a soundengineer at MusiquePlus and atelevision director at Apartment11 Productions respectively.

For Cassandra and Maxime, their experience in the televisionindustry only reaffirmed theirdesire to pursue their dreams.Spending the day at MusiquePlus,Cassandra did not stand by idly, but she assisted in a live musicalperformance as well as evenlearning some tricks of the tradewhen it comes to the recording, mixing and the remixing of sound.

Maxime’s visit to the awardwinning Apartment 11 Productionsallowed him to spend time at both the head office and studio, truly opening his eyes to theentertainment world. Shadowingvarious professionals, his day tookhim from the editing room, past anendless line of awards and ontovarious meetings in preparation forweeks of on-set shooting. Althoughhe was not allowed to yell actionand cut while on set, Maxime didrealize that the life of a director ismuch more than those two words, and like many of his peers, he can’twait to make his dream a reality.

Whether or not the CareerExploration Program reaffirms thatthe path you’re on is for you orleads you in another direction, theopportunity is there for all studentsacross the English MontrealSchool Board to have the chanceto take a glimpse into their future, begin to write their own story andof course, make it come true.

Apartment 11’s FindingStuff Out will pemiere on TVOntario in November.

EMSB CAREER EXPLORATION PROGRAM

Marc Kandalaft greets Rosemount High School student Eve Lazaro-Loyer for her Career Exploration Program experience at his firm.

Making your dream a reality

During this consultation period, it is important to note that theschools or centres operate as usual. Sending out a school or centrefor consultation should not presume any kind of outcome. That iswhy parents are asked to remain true to their schools and to continueto support their school/centre as they always have. The consultationperiod will end in January 2012, when a decision will be made bythe Council of Commissioners.

The Administration and the Council of Commissionersunderstand how difficult this process is for the parents and studentswhose schools and centres have been affected by this consultationprocess. We would not engage in this process were it not absolutelynecessary. Until then, your schools and centres look forward to yourcontinued involvement. We ask you to continue to volunteer andwork in partnership with your school or centre. Our School Board’scontinued success rate is in large part due to the delivery of excellentpedagogical services and the collaboration and active participationof our parents in their child’s school life. Please let us not forgetthis during this difficult time of deliberation. I would invite us all to work together as we always have for the benefit of our students.

Nearly 500 school volunteersand administrators, as well as senior management andcommissioners, attended the 10th

annual English Montreal SchoolBoard (EMSB) VolunteerAppreciation Evening last April20 at the Plaza Volare of theCrowne Plaza Hotel in Ville St.Laurent. The event was heldduring National Volunteer Weekunder the theme of “Volunteers… Our Shining Stars!”

Time and space did not allowthe EMSB to honour all of itsnearly 1,500 volunteers in person. Therefore, only those individualswho have volunteered for morethan five years were in attendance.Volunteers with 15 or more yearsof service received a specialEMSB Volunteer Night metaltravel mug as a thank you gift.Several thousand copies of acommemorative program bookwere distributed to each school. The emcees for the evening wereMichael J. Cohen from theEMSB and Global News anchorJamie Orchard. La CapitaleFinancial Services was once againthe title sponsor for this event.

“For all that you have done tomake our schools and centres shine,by helping them become thrivingcommunities within themselvesthroughout the year (and for manyyears), you have certainly earnedyour star on the EMSB Walk ofFame,” said EMSB DirectorGeneral Robert A. Stocker. “Wetake comfort in the fact that theEMSB universe is a very brightone, thanks to many brilliant starsthat make up that universe … you,the volunteers.”

“While they may not haveappeared in an Oscar-winningmovie, or a highly-rated TV show, our EMSB volunteers are certainlysuperstars in their own rightthroughout our schools andcentres. How they help out andhow much they help out is simplyamazing – governing boards, thePPO, Home & School, ourlibraries, field trips, fundraising, tutoring and special events – eachand every one of you play a majorrole towards the success that ourschools and centres enjoy,” EMSBChairman Angela Mancini toldthe audience at the event.

Central Parents’ CommitteeChairman Linda Perez addedhow “volunteering means you aresetting a great example for yourchildren. Your actions are concreteproof of the importance you placein their education. Your actionsprove to them that they too caninfluence their lives. Your actionsshow them the importance of beingpart of a community.”

Entertainment was provided bythe Paul VI Choir. A recentaddition to the special needsschool’s curriculum, the choir wasestablished to perform at publicevents and galas, in order to exposeits student members to the public,as well as build a sense of self-

confidence and vocal expertise. They also get the opportunity topractice reading skills, vocal skillsand the importance of teamworkthat helps make them betterindividuals and better singers. Thechoir sang a short selection of songsat Volunteer Night, including“Blackbird” by The Beatles.

VOLUNTEER OFDISTINCTION

This year’s Volunteer ofDistinction was Angie Bertone, aparent volunteer with the EMSBfor 20 years. She began her timeas a volunteer at Leonardo DaVinci Elementary School (nowLeonardo Da Vinci Academy) inRDP, as well as Vincent MasseyCollegiate in Rosemount, andserved on the governing boards of both schools. She also waschairman of the Region’s 2 and 3parent committees, served on thegoverning board of the AdvisoryCommittee on Special EducationServices (ACSES), and was adirector of the English Parents’Committees Association (EPCA).She is currently a devoted parentvolunteer at Paul VI High School in Ahuntsic and sits on the EMSB Council ofCommissioners as one of its twoparent commissioners.

When she is not dedicating hertime as an EMSB volunteer, Ms.Bertone works for Ultramar’shome heating division as atechnical advisor and trains itscustomer service representatives.

“What is a volunteer? Avolunteer is someone who gives ofoneself selflessly for a cause. Thissimple yet powerful statement, I believe, describes every singleparent here tonight,” said Ms.Bertone as she accepted theVolunteer of Distinction Awardat the event. “So many parentshelp out in our schools, helping inany way they can …and they doso willingly, happily and selflesslyfor the benefit of all our students.”

Ms. Bertone also thanked herfamily – her sons Stephen andChristopher, future daughter-in-law Stephanie and her husbandAlbert – for all their endlesssupport during her 20 years as anEMSB volunteer. “My husbandAlbert has had all the patience inthe world for all these years takingcare of home and kids because he has always known what thismeans to me, except of coursewhen I come home at 2 a.m. froma meeting.”

The Tony Licursi Bursary will finally enable him to realize his dream ofvisiting his ancestral home this fall.

Christine is a Secondary V student and has always achieved above average, honour roll gradeswhile dedicating herself to participate in various school and community sports and activities.

“Sports have always been my passion as I not only play for my community, but for my school aswell,” she says. “My dedication towards sports has allowed me to develop school spirit, responsibilitiesas well as leadership qualities among my peers. Nevertheless, no matter how important my athleticsare, I know that my academics are, and should remain, my primary concern.”
