In this edition’s journal section, we give you insight of our visit to Klungkung, a town with heroic tale and amazing background.

Bali is one of the 34 provinces of the Republic of Indonesia and has become the prime holiday destination in

Indonesia as well as one of the major holiday destinations for international tourists. The island is located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying

between Java to the west and Lombok to the east, and divided into 9 districts (8 regencies and 1 municipality) with

population around four million people.

Denpasar is the capital and most populous city of Bali.

The vast majority of the Balinese people are Hindu so there are a significant number of temples on the island. Temple or Pura in

Indonesian is the place for worship, and the biggest,

most important and holiest temple in Bali is the Mother

Temple of Besakih.

Bali has a tropical climate all year with average temperature of 31

degrees Celsius and two different seasons. Dry

season is between May

and September with high humidity and wet season is between October andApril

with low humidity. From June to August, the weather is usually nice, breezy and

cool.

The main language is Indonesia, however being one of the most favourite holiday destinations in

the world, not only many people speak English but also other foreign

languages such as French, Japanese, Chinese,

Germany.

Although it is definitely a funeral ritual, Balinese people did not grief, or at least they did not show it during the whole Ngaben procession. The body of the deceased is placed

and treated as if he/she was still sleeping.

Picking up the day to do Ngaben is never an easy feat. A lot of discussion, preparation and cost are necessary before the actual ceremony commences. On the day, the body of the deceased is placed inside a coffin, and then is put inside a sarcophagus resembling a buffalo or in a temple structure

made of papier-mâché and wood. It will then be transported to the cremation site in a unique way, in which the structure

containing the body is never carried in a straight line. This is to confuse the evil spirits who wish to take the soulless body.

For Balinese Hindu, 'death' is only a temporal absent; as they believe the deceased will reincarnate or find final rest in 'Moksha' (permanent liberation of reincarnation and death

cycle).

In partnership with Pansophia Nusantara, W Retreat & Spa Seminyak will host their very own Grand Gala—a night of glamour and fun charity party filled with entertainments on Saturday, December 12th, 2015. The Grand Gala is a night of giving back to the Bali community. Funds from the event will support the build and development of a children’s school in Bali. The

On Thursday, 24th September 2015, Vin+ Seminyak got an honorable chance to host a wine luncheon featuring the finest product from d’Arenberg Wine. On the same occasion, Vin+ also invited Mr. Toby Porter—the winemaker of d’Arenberg from McLaren Vale Australia. During the event, guests were treated with four kind of menu consisting of first and second opening menus, a main menu and a lavish dessert, all paired with d'Arenberg finest wine. Vin+ Seminyak used the opportunity to introduce their new executive chef, Mr. Theodorus Setyo, who will bring his kitchen savvy experience of working in AAA grade restaurants over the past few years to welcome the guest with his innovative menus.

Inspired from the unique experience of enjoying Singaporean culinary, Moonlite Kitchen & Bar proudly re-enacts their Sunday Brunch session with menus based from Singapore's Hawker Food Culture. The origin of this culinary can be tracked back to the time when immigrants from Chinese and Malay Archipelago bring the food influence from their homeland, developed from time to time and finally acquired as integral part in Singapore;s food culture. THAI AIRWAYS LAUNCHED B787 THE DREAMLINER

On October 1st 2015, THAI Airways launched an Inaugural flight with the B787 Dreamliner from DPS-BKK-DPS. B787 The Dreamliner is the most fuel-efficient airliner series, designed to be 20% more efficient. Cabin is state of the art! Flight attendants and other crew members have the ability to customize the lighting in the cabin – they can simulate a bright daylight or a calm night sky. The plane has no window shades! Instead, there is a dimming option for passengers.

GIORGIO ITALIAN NIGHT AT GRAND ASTON BALI BEACH RESORT

In order to launch their new menu and also introduce their newly appointed Italian Chef Bruno Olmi, Giorgio Italian Ristorante Pizzeria of Grand Aston Bali Beach Resort held a small and intimate event called 'Giorgio Italian Night'. Held on Wednesday, October 21st 2015, the invitees got the chance to enjoy around 25 tasting menu including ravioli, carpaccio di manzo, spaghetti with carbonara sauce, tiramisu and panna cotta.

If you have planned to visit Lombok, Senaru village at

Northern Lombok is a worthy place to visit. The area of Senaru is actually adjoined with Rinjani National Park, which means the nature is pretty much preserved.

One of the natural sites to visit in this area is Tiu Kelep Waterfall located on the South Eastern side of Senaru village. To reach the waterfall, you must decent through sets of stone stairs for about 15 minutes. It is an energy consuming trip so it is best to prepare your fitness beforehand.

But as you enter the area; all of your effort will be paid off by the stunning view of water cascading down from the gaps on the rocky hills, hugged by dense green forest. Tiu Kelep has a nice bathing pool below the falls with very cool water which you can use to bathe and refresh yourself. The local believes that the water of Tiu Kelep can enhance the skin of those who bathe themselves in it and make them look considerably younger.

ILLUSTRIOUS KLUNGKUNG

Also known as Semarapura, Klungkung is a historical

town resemble Bali in every of its aspect, from culture to bravery. On 1908, it became the last territory to surrender to Dutch colonial government, and they did not go down without a fight, as the King of Klungkung at that time led 200 members of his family, including women and children, to participate

in final suicidal act called ‘Puputan.’ This action inspired all Indonesian warriors, and significantly boost up their morale to retake the country from Dutch colonial grasp.

We decided to visit Klungkung and gain first-hand experience of what goods it has to offer in term of tourism destination. First, you can visit Kerta Gosa. Located inside

the Semarapura Palace compound in Semarapura town, Klungkung, the pavilion first functioned as a court of law back in 1945 but it has been known to be built around 18th centuries by Dewa Agung Gusti Sideman. The ceiling of Kerta Gosa is decorated by painting, telling a story about Bhima Swarga, a Hindu Epic reference from the saga of Mahabharata. Kerta Gosa has been renovated several times and preserved, adding more detail to the already-amusing parts of the pavilions.

If you want to dig a little bit deeper into the fascinating historical background, Museum Semarajaya is a place to go. Once a public school at Dutch colonial era, nowadays it turns into a safe storage for several pre-historic remnants found around the island. The unique museum architecture comes from Old Dutch-style combined with Balinese traditional influence, which was built around 1908 and officially opened at 1920. Klungkung also has a

distinctive style of art called ‘Kamasan’ painting. This style is perfected by the painters from Kamasan village. The characteristic of this painting is flat-shaped characters, one-dimension figures, and does not introduce the concept of contours or perspective of light. Decoratively, Kamasan painting is very rich both in color and meticulous patterns. The patterns are many with stamp style, yet flexible in size. This is in accordance with the nature of wayang, and it did the

imitation of complete wayang shape. That is why the style of Kamasan painting is also called ‘Lukisan Wayang Kamasan’.

After a whole day filled with exciting stroll across

the city, we stopped by at Pesinggahan. It is a small restaurant, which is famous as a lunch place for locals and tourists alike. The main menu you can order here is a set of ‘sate lilit’—Balinese fish satay that comes with lots

of condiment, side dishes, and a plate of steamed rice. The taste is incredibly good and completely wrapped our whole journey to Klungkung with satisfaction in mind, heart and body all at once.

Since opened 2 years ago, Gedong Sisi has decided to

help maintaining the tradition alive through their whole existence, not just being a cozy restaurant serving all-day delicacies. The restaurant is built mainly from wooden material and incorporating a deep sense of Balinese architecture in their interior design.

Their name ‘Gedong’ is Balinese words for ‘home’, and they tend to make their

guests as comfortable as visiting a local friend’s house and feast upon tantalizing selections of Indonesian traditional dishes with authentic taste. One of the recommended dishes is the classic Lombok Island’s ayam taliwang, which is basically a grilled chicken served with lawar vegetable and a plate of steamed rice. The whole chicken is tender, made from the traditional steaming process called ‘ungkep’ perfectly wrapped in spices, sweet and delicious. Then you have to try cecalon—Balinese soup consisting of chicken meatball, chopped pumpkin cooked with turmeric.
