Descendents of Andrew Kincaid.

From Hardsteys History of Greenbrier County, Virginia,

published in 1803.

Adam Dean Kincaid was the son of James Kincaid.

James Kincaid and John Kincaid were brothers who married

sisters, Alice and Elizabeth Dean, daughters of Rev. John Dean

of Botetourt.

John Kincaid married Alice Lean on July 25, 1787. John died

August 11, 1835 at the age of'89.years. Alice. Dean died October 15,

1855. When John and Alice came to Alleghaney County, Virginia,

he bought on Jackson's River.

James Kincaid married Elizabeth Dean October 30, 1790. Both

were born in Bath County, Virginia. They came to the Sinking Creek

near Williamsburg in Greenbrier County in 1790. To them were born

five sons and seven daughters, nine of which were:

1. Jane Kincaid, born in 1793, married Samuel McClung

2. John Dean Kincaid, born in 1795, died in 143,married hart' (Polly) Hyde October 21, 1816

3. Andrew Kincaid, born in 1797, married Elizabeth KnappAugust 1, 1839

Sarah Hutsinpiller was the Aunt of Mary and Nancy Bubger.

Three sons of James and Elizabeth Dean Kincaid married Hutsinpiller

descendents. One grandson, Andrew Kincaid married Elizabeth Knapp.

Their son, Charles Andrew Kincaid, married Clarinda Taylor Lewis,

a granddaughter of Anthony Hutsinpiller.

April 7, 1860: Jane Ann Kincaid, aged 15; Andrew S.-Kincaid,

aged 22; Alley F. Kincaid, aged 19; minor children of John D.

Kincaid by their guardian or next friend, Adam D. Kincaid,

residents of Greenbrier County, Virginia, declared on oath,

"They are the children of John D. Kincaid, who was a private in

the company commanded by Captain Henry A. Wadkins; later transferred

to Captain P. Goit's company; in militia artillary commanded by

Col. Linley in the War of 1812. Said father was drafted at Lewisburg,

Greenbrier Co., Virginia about September 2, 18411for a term of 6

months. He was honorably discharged at Norfolk about February 24, 1815."

Father married Polly Hide in Greenbrier Co., Virginia, in

1816. They were married by John Pennell, Minister. Mother's

maiden name was Polly Hide. Father died at residence, Greenbrier

Co., Virginia on the 13th of February in 1843. No widow survives

him. His wife died the 10th of February in 1843.

Charles Hyde Kincaid Married Jane (Meg) McClung Aug. 18, 1840,

by A. G. Chenowith, Minister. (Court House Record)

James D. Kincaid, born June 5, 1819, married in 1846, Lenora

F. Chapman of Guyandot, Virginia, went to Cattlesburg, Kentucky,

in 1846. They reared three children. Two sons, one named Paul,

one daughter named Emma Kincaid Eastman.

Margaret Hyde Kincaid the second, born June 28, 1828 died Jan. 10,

1904. Married Thomas A. Terry, born July 19, 1819, died. Dec. 10,

Elizabeth D. Kincaid born Jan. 25, 1824 Married Granville S.

McCutcheon 2-25-1843, a Minister of the Gospel. They had two

daughters Emma McCutcheon, Clothin and Ada McCutcheon Evans, who

had a son Frank Evans.

Apr. 10, 1866 by J. C. Burr, Minister. They moved to Oregon.

(Court House Record).

Jane Ann Kincaid born Dec. 28, 1835, was married three times. First

to a Grose, Second to a Ryan, Third, to Bill Huffman. In her senior

years she was known as Aunt Jenny Huffman. She had no children.

She died at the home of her cousin L. G. Kincaid. She was buried at the

Fox Cemetery., She has no grave marker.

Charles Hyde Kincaid.was born on Feb. 4, 1818 and died in 1902.

He married twice.

His first wife was Jane McClung. Daughter of Wm. (Long Billie)

McClung and Margaret Boller McClung, sister of Dixon McClung. They

were married on Aug. 18, 1840 by A. G. Chenowith, Minister, recorded

in marriage book 1A, P.130 Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia.

of Thomas and Abigail McGuffin, who lived on Horseshoe Creek in

Fayette County.

They were the Parents of four children who grew to maturity.

They lived in or near Reedy in Roane County, West Virginia.

No marriage, birth, or death records, are available; and no descendents

have been found.

John Henderson Kincaid and Sally Cryslip had three children:.

By John R. Farren, Lewisburg

Charles Hyde Kincaid and his first wife Jane McClung lived at

Sinking Creek, near Williamburg in Greenbrier County.

He left his family while their children were small. Soon after that

his wife died leaving the children to be reared by others.

George G. Kincaid and Mary M. Kincaid stayed among the McClungs, a

and William Dickinson and Sally Ann stayed at Charley Deems'.

When grown William Dickinson (Dick) and George G. Kincaid

went to Fayette County to work around the coal mines, where they

married and reared families.

Mary M. Kincaid married John W. Holliday from Virginia.

To this union were born eight children. She died in Jan., 1879

when her youngest child was four months old. She is buried at

Smoot beside her husband and his second wife. They have marble

slab markers. The Hollidays are all buried at Smoot except Betty

Holliday Farren, wife of John R. Farren. She is buried at the End

of the Trail Cemetery near Clintonville.

Sally Ann Kincaid married Moses W. Rogers Mar. 10, 1874 and

lived at Smoot in Greenbrier County and is buried there. She has

one daughter, Mrs. Betty Martin, who lives at Smoot. Sally Ann

Kincaid and Moses W. Rogers were the parents of eight children.

In his senior years Charles Hyde Kincaid seemed to have fallen

out with his second family. So he left them and wandered about

among his relatives in Fayette and Greenbrier Countries until he

died at home of his son George G. Kincaid in 1902, at Ramsey,

West Virginia.

He is buried in a little church cemetery at Mt. Zion Methodist

Church and has a beautiful granite marker that was erected by his

son Cyrus Kincaid.

George G. Kincaid was born Aug. 25, 1848 and died at the age of 83 in

1931. He married Margaret Ann Grose, who was bron on April 27, 1856

and died Sept. 25, 1913.

EMORY DOW KINCAID bonn1878 (died of cancer) 1954.

CHARLES WESLEY KINCAID born 1880, died 1960 of cancer. He never

married.

MYRLTE ELIZABETH KINCAID born 1883, died in 1949 at the age of 56.

She married Limon Baker in her middle age after J. E. married. They

lived in Michigan.

John Edward Kincaid was born Dec. 10, 1885

June 5, 1904, unmarried.

Nannie J. Kincaid born Sept. 22, 1887 died May 15, 1920.

She died of T.B., unmarried.

John Edward Kincaid (John Ed) is the only one of this family still

living in this year 1964. He operates a used car lot about a mile

from Victor, (West Virginia) Post Office. He has worked at various

kinds of labor, farming, lumbering, mining, and trading. He married

Garnet Goode, daughter of Hiram Goode and is the father of eleven

children, five sons are living.

George G. Kincaid and Margaret Ann Grose (Maggie) were farmers.

They reared their family on a little farm about a mile beyond Ramsey

Post Office. This farm is now owned by Rosa Wilson Kincaid who lives

there with her two sons, Charles and Leon.

George G. Kincaid was crippled in both hands. The fingers on

each hand were drawn to each side from the thumbs and were that way

from childhood. He was a faithful Baptist, who thought the world

would have been better if John Wesley had died when he was a baby.

Charles H. Kincaid, came to live with him in his senior years.

George O. Kincaid Built a room for him just back of his own house

and took care of his father.

His first wife was Mag Hutsinpeller. His second wife was MINTA HOBBS.

MACK HOLLIDAY married Lelia Farren. They were the parents of ten

children.

FRANK HOLLIDAY MARRIED Ida Flannigan. They were the parents of

eleven children.

STEWARD HOLLIDAY was biarried twice. He was the father of eleven

children. His first wife was Mag Surbaugh, second wife was Meg

Bresenham.

DICKINSON (DICK) HOLLIDAY never married

JAMES HOLLICAY married Irene Scruggs. They were the parents of

seven children.

1897, and were parents of three children.

HOMER FARREN married STELLA DOTSON. They were the parents of twelve

children. HOMER died of heart trouble January 8, 1958. He was a book-

keeper for a coal company and died in his car enroute to his work

between Smoot and Leyland, West Virginia.

FRANK FARREN was married twice. He is the father of four children. His

first wife was Dosia Sheperd. Hie second wife is Nora Sexton. He lives

at Lewisburg and his father JOHN R. FARREN lives with him.

MARY BELLE FARREN married Leslie Farren (4th cousin).

They are the parents of one child and live at Smoot.

JOHN R. FARREN is 89 years of age. He is retired school teacher. He

taught school for forty-three years. He was a brother to Lelia Farren

who married MACK HOLLIDAY.

SALLY ANN KINCAID, who was born in 1856 and died in 1927, married

Moses W. Rogers, who was born in 1845 and died in 1920. Moses W. Rogers

was a carpenter. Re fell off a high porch which he was building for

Carl Hutsinpiller. He died two or three days later at Mr. Hutsinpillers

home in Smoot. They were both hurried at Smoot. SALLY KINCAID and

Moses Rogers were the parents of eight children.

Lula Evelyn Bangor, who was born in 1898.

OSCAR E. ROGERS, born 1886.

Oscar is a cripple. HA lost a leg due to poison in his foot and

is now living at the Andrew Rowan home at Sweet Springs.

WILLIE ANN ROGERS, born 1887, died 1920.

EDNA LOIS ROGERS, born in 1891, died 1930, married John Ford.

BETTY= ROGERS, born 1896, married Seal John Martin, born 1892.

One daughter Ruth Martin born June 24, 1929, married William Levier,

born August 29, 1924. They were the parents of three children.

Dick and Lizzie Kincaid reared their family on a farm which

Lizzie inherited from her father, Salathiel Gwinn. This farm was

located on Laurel Creek near the present site of Ramsey Post Office,

Fayette County, West Virginia. Dick Kincaid was a Veterinarian, not the

licensed type, but one who helped his neighbors with their sick animals.

Elizabeth Kincaid was a kind, gracious, intelligent woman.

She and her husband were often at the bed side of sick or dying

friends and relations. She lived to be 93 years old and would never

tell her age. Her father gave her the first sewing machine ever brought

into this region. She was a devoted Christian, a Baptist. She would

ride horseback for miles to attend a camp meeting, and she carried her

purse in her stocking. She was never without money but no one knew

the amount of it. She definitely believed in the evils and spells cast

by witches.

All of the children grew to maturity but the youngest,

Lonnie who died at the ago of sixteen months. Lillie Lee was

mentally retarded, died at the age of 24 years.

This family had much in common. In their youth all of the

sons of Elizabeth and William Dickinson Kincaid worked in the coal

mines except Laviro Dickinson. Leroy Ferdinand Kincaid was killed

by a slate fall in the mines of Gauley Mountain Coal Co. at Ansted

at the age of 23 years.

Two of those men were born of June 27. They all married

good women, none of them were ever married but once. All were of the

Baptist faith. The only one now living in 1964 is Loami Imboden (Coot)

Kincaid who will be 87 years old November 9, 1964.

As they advanced in years, they all turned to farming.

Laviro Dickinson Kincaid inherited the farm of his parents. It is now

owned by Laviro's son, Sidney Paris Kincaid of Fayetteville, West Virginia.

Lenora Margaret Kincaid Married Walter Joseph Fox. Walter Fox was also

a coal miner and a farmer.

Financially Lavago Gwinn Kincaid was the most successful one of the family.

His wife was Virginia McCutcheon. Both died of cancer. He was buried

in the family cemetery. She was buried in Highlawn Memorial Park, Oak

Hill, West Virginia.

William Dickinscollincaid and Elizabeth Gwinn are buried in

the Family Cemetery on the farm where they reared their family and

where Elizabeth Gwinn was roared.

Five of their sons are buried there. Lonnie, Leroy Ferdinand,

Lavago Gwinn, Leland William, and Laviro Dickinson, one daughter,

Lilly Lee, and several grand children.

In 1964, their son, Coot Kincaid and their grand children

contributed funds for the purchase of a monument for their graves.

It is a double monument and bears this inscription. It

was erected Aug. 22, 1964.

Laviaggi Lawrence Kincaid (Viggi), Grandson of Charles Hyde

Kincaid, was a quiet man, industrious, and good to his family and

neighbors. In his youth he was a coal miner. In his later years

he farmed and traded in livestock.

He kept a good team of horses and a wagon and hauling jobs over

rough country roads.

His wife was Ella Jane Ramsey, only daughter of Thomas

Henderson Ramsey. They were members of Liberty Baptist Church and are

buried in The Criat Cemetery. His wife preceded him in death by

seven years. His son, Cecil Dean Kincaid,:lived with'Ilim and .

inherited his property. Viggi Kincaid and two of his sons died from

heart failure. Vivian Kincaid and William Ramsey Kincaid (Bill)

were teachers. Vivian gave up teaching when she married, and

Bill gave it up for a better paying job. He is a salesman at

Gauley Motors in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. All of Laviggi Kincaid's

family spent their lives in West Virginia, Fayette county and Kanawha

county, except Virgil Ray Kincaid and Helen Elizabeth Kincaid.

Virgil Ray Kincaid was a Vagabond. His education was limited

to the sixth grade. He was dependent and unreliable when among his

family. In his youth he married Willa Huddleston, a divorcee with

one child. He soon got away from her and disappeared for twenty years.

In 1951 he contacted his family from Seattle, Washington. They sent

him money for bus fare back to W. Va., outfitted him with clothes, and

helped him to get employment. He stayed inWest Virginia about a

year and disappeared again.

Helen Elizabeth Kincaid was the youngest of this family.

She lived in her father's home as long as he lived. She was married

twice. She first married her cousin, Serle Terry, the greatgrandson

of John Dean Kincaid and Folly Hyde. Serle was the son of Will

Terry and Ida Rule, and grandson of Thomas Terry and Margaret Hyde Kincaid.

Serle died of lung cancer. After his death, Helen married Ralph

White. They are presently living in Arizona. He is connected with

the United Mine Workers Union and is writing a book concerning their

achievements. They have one son, Mike White. Helen and Serle had

no children.

Lee Viro Kincaid was a coal miner and a farmer. At the time

of his death he was operating a grocery store at Ramsey, W. Va. His

wife was Rona Legg, Daughter of Samuel and Marie Rule Legg. They were

the parents of six children. Two of their sons Samuel Lawrence and

James Leo served with the army in the second World War. Lee Viro died

of a heart condition at the age of 52 years. He is buried in Liberty

Cemetery.

Vivian Kincaid married Jessie Emile Frazier, Sr. They have

lived at Cedar Grove, W. Va. since their marriage. They were the

parents of six children, four of whom grew to maturity. All of

them are prosperous, useful citizens. All of them are of the

Baptist Faith except one daughter. Elizabeth Frazier is a

Methodist, she has never married, and she lives at home with her

parents and manages a drug store in Cedar Grove.

Jessie Emile Frazier, Jr. served with the Army in the

second World War. He is employed with the Applachian Power Co.

He married Nellie May Agse. They are the parents of three children.

They live in Cedar Grove, W. Va.

Kenneth Lewis Frazier married Elaine Hudson. They are the

parents of three children. They live in California.

Genevieve Frazier married Carmel Smith. They lived in

Charleston West Virginia, are the parents of a daughter and twin

sons, Terry and Gary Smith.

Randall Cosby Kincaid was the eldest son of Laviggi Lawrence

Kincaid and Ella Jane Ramsey. He was born at Ramsey, W. Va. at

the home of his grandfather, Thomas Henderson Ramsey, Jan. 14, 1894.

He died Friday March 3, 1961, in a Veterans Hospital at Beckley

from pneumonia and heart failure. He was a retired automobile

salesman, a veteran of the First World War, a member of Stonewall

Jackson Post American Legion, and Signal Knob Lodge of the Knights

of Pythias, all of Ansted.

Funeral services were at Liberty Baptist Church, 2 P.M. on

Sunday March 6, 1961, by Reverend Guy Vaughn, and burial was in the

Church Cemetery. He was never affiliated with a church.

He married Ida Rebecca Goad December 24, 1920. He was

Postmaster at Ramsey, W. Va. at this time and operated a general

store there for several years.

They were the parents of three children, all of whom grew

to maturity. His son Captain John Randall Kincaid enlisted in

the U. S. Navy Air Corps Mat; 17, 1942, served in the Pacific

area in World War Two. His.daughters, Margaret Kincaid, and

Josephine Louise Kincaid worked at a defense plant in Elkton,

Maryland during the war. Josephine worked as an inspector,

and as a labratory technician. Margaret worked in the office as

time keeper, and later in the main inspection office. She

was the last female employee to leave the office at the close

of the plant. She worked as postal clerk at the Victor, W. Va.

Post Office from 1951 to 1961.

Ida Goad Kincaid was a school teacher. She retired June 1,

1959 at the age of 65i years.

Capt. John R. Kincaid began his flight training at the

Naval Reserve Aviation Base in Anacostia, in Washington, D. C.,

with a group of young W. Va. college students knows as the

"Flying Mountaineers." His training continued at Corpis Christi,

Texas, Kingsville, Miami, Florida, Chicago, I11., and Seattle,

Washington.

In October, 1943, he went aboard the Carrier M.S. Enterprise,

in Squadron 10, known as the "Grim Reapers," and served nine

months in combat in the Pacific area where he flew more than 80

missions, and returned safely to the United States. He was a

fighter pilot and flew a fighter plane called the "Hell Cat"

in World War Two.

Following his tour of duty, he was stationed at Atlantic

City, N. J., and suffered a broken back when the gas line broke

in his plane, and he had to make a water landing in the Atlantic

Ocean.

He has since served on the following carriers - U.S.S.

Kearsarge, The U.S.S. Ranger, and the U.S.S. Franklin D.

Roosevelt. He served at the Pentagon 19$8-1961 and is now at the

Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of. Staff in the year of 1964.

Lenora Margaret Fox, known as Maggie, was born at Ramsey,

West Virginia. All of her children grew to maturity and are useful

citizens. Hilbert V. Fox was a polio victim and was so crippled

in his legs that he is unable to walk without a crutch and a cane.

He is a skillful mechanic. He married and is the father of five

children whom he supported by the labor of his hands

Walter Fox worked in the coal mines until he saved $2,000.

In 1906 ho rode a horaa to Getewood and bought the farm he lived

on until his death. At the time he purchased the farm, he had

six children.

He preceded his wife in death, and she grieved about it the

rest of her life. She wished she could have died when he died.

In her senior years she made and sold 186 quilts. She made

her living and enough money for two small tombstones. She and

her husband were members of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren at

Gatewood, West Virginia. They are buried in the church cemetery.

Laviro Dickinson Kincaid was a semi-invalid for many years.

He lived on a farm at Ramsey, West Virginia. He was never abln

do much farm work, but he was the manager, and with the help of his

sons and his wife he made a living for his ramily. His wife was

Ina Winebrinear. They were the parents of five sons. The oldest

boy died at the age of seventeen. As the boys grew up two of them

Vent to C.C. Camps and helped support their parents and younger

brothers.

Three of the boys, Sidney, Harry, and Kyle, served in the

Arpy. Harry retired from the armed service'in 1961.

Lt. Col. Olden Kincaid joined the Canadian Army in 1941.

He later transferred to the American Army. He was the pilot of a

Bomber Plane. The plane was shot down over Germany and he was

the only survivor. He was wounded in the arm and was captured. He

served nineteen months in German prison camps. When he returned

to the U. S. he went into the trucking industry. He gave it up

and re-inlisted in the Army.

Coot Kincaid and Bessie Davis Kincaid live on a farm originally

owned by his uncle, Joseph Gwinn. It is a part of a tract of

land once owned by his Grandfather Salathial Gwinn. Two of

their sons, Stanley Laviro and Kermet Frank served in the Army

in World War Two. Kenneth and Guy Kincaid work in the coal

mines. Guy Kincaid also owns a farm and raises cattle.

Winnie Kincaid married Charles Wesley Morgan, a conductor

on a passenger train. They live in Charleston, West Virginia.

They are the parents of two children;

Audrey Mabel Kincaid married Lester Wayne Russel.

Both of these families live in California.

Stanley Laviro Kincaid married Rose Nell Cogar. They live

county, West Virginia. They reared their family in a two story

log house. They owned a large farm which has since been divided

into smaller farms. C. Moreland Terry now owns the home place of

his father, Thomas William Terry.

at the Fox cemetery.

The Kincaids Scotch

Anthony Hutsenpiller was born 1765 and died May 18, 1850.

He came to Greenbrier County, Virginia with his father and

brothers in the late 1780's and spent the rest of his life there.

In 1871 he married Elizabeth Harpole, daughter of Jacob and

Catherine Harpole. Elizabeth was born in 1773 and died in 1846.

Anthony Hutsenpiller operated a farm and a transportation

business which brought goods by wagon from Philadelphia. He was

postmaster in the Mill community and owned a saw mill and gist

mill on Milligan Creek, which was operated for over a hundred

years.

He built his house on rising ground above the creek, at first

six rooms to which others were added in later years with chimneys and

porches as needed which has been continually occupied by succeeding

generations of his family. The cemetery is on the hill behind the

home. They were the parents of five children all born at the mill.

at Kesslers Cross lanes in a log mansion. They are buried in Zoor

Cemetery.

sisters and were daughters of Margaret Hutsenpiller who was a sister

of Sarah Hutsenpiller Kincaid, wife of William McClannahan Kincaid.

Andrew Kincaid married Elizabeth Knapp. Their son, Charles

Andrew Kincaid, married Clarinda Taylor Lewis, a grand-daughter of

Anthony Hutsenpiller.

William McClanachan Kincaid, son of James and Elizabeth Dean

Kincaid, was born near Williamsburg in Greenbrier Co. Virginia,

September 18, 1805. He married twice. His first wife was Sarah

Hutsenpiller, daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth Harpole Hutsenpiller.

William Kincaid and Sarah Hutsenpiller were married at Greenbrier

September 18, 1828 by Joel Burgess, Minister. Recorded in marriage

book 1-A page 73 Lewisburg West Virginia.

Sarah Hutsenpiller Kincaid died 1855 at Victor, West Virginia

Mountain Cane District, Fayette Co. at her home near Hope Well

Baptist Church. She is buried in the Terry Cemetery at Victor,

West Virginia. She was the mother of four children. She has no

William Kincaid's second wife was Mary Jane Waggoner of

Lowiaburg, Greenbrier Co. She was born Nov. 1, 1832 and died

in 1924. She married William McClanachan Kincaid April 4, 1861.

She was the daughter of Joseph Waggoner and Sarah Campbell Breckenridge

Waggoner. She is buried in the Duckworth Sirsnnit Cemetery about

a mile up the railroad from Greenwood, West Virginia. She was the

mother of five children.

William McClanachan Kincaid and his son Henry Dickinson

Kincaid served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

After the close of the Civil War, William moved his family to

Gilmer Co. West Virginia where he died July 8, 1877 and is buried

in the Tanner Cemetery. Two of William's daughters were named

Elizabeth Jane Kincaid. The oldest and the youngest.

frame house is still standing.

Elizabeth J. Kincaid was only 34 years old when she died.

She was the mother of seven children. She is buried at the Fox

Scarbro, West Virginia, Jan. 1, 1936. He is buried in Highlawn

Cemetery at Oak Hill.

Floyd James Harrah born Aug. 31, 1865, died Jan. 14, 1945,

married Haseltine McCutcheon, born Sept. 18, 1866 - died Jan. 4,

1935. They had one child that died in infancy. They are buried

at the Harrah Cemetery.

Charles Emmit Stephenson married Florence May Groves, who

died Dec. 24, 1956. They had no children. Charles E. Stephenson

served two terms as County Clerk of Nicholas Co.

Henry Dickinson Kincaid, son of William McClanachan Kincaid,

and Sarah Hutsenpiller Kincaid was born in the vicinity of Kesslers

Cross Lanes, Nicholas Co., West Virginia.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Salt Sulpher Springs

July 13, 1862. At the close of the Civil War he married Sarah

Elizabeth Hewitt. They were the parents of five children. Three

children reached maturity.

He moved his family from Gilmer Co. to the Ramsey section of

Fayette Co. about 1880 or 1882, They are buried at the Fox Cemetery.

Cortes Stephenson. They made their home on a little farm inhereted

from Cortes Stephenson's father. This farM is near Gilboa Post

Office and church about seven miles from Summersville. They are

both buried on Hutchinsons Creek in the Vanbibber Cemetery near

Gilboa Post Office. None of their family have any children.

Iva Stephenson married Arnett Groves and lives at 1310 Webster

Road, Summersville, West Virginia.' They have no children except

a foster daughter. They own a hardware store in Summersville, W. Va.

Henrietta Virginia Kincaid was a seamstress. She lived at

Ansted, West Virginia and supported herself as a dress maker.

She had one son, Lester H. Kincaid who was reared by her brother,

William Levi Kincaid. Walter McClanachan Kincaid was her cousin.

KINCAID - FARR

William Levi Kincaid was a teacher. He served the County

of Fayette, West Virginia as teacher, principal and supervisor.

He was teaching at Mt. Eery School the year he died (1937-1938

school year). He owned a farm home that was well kept and

productive.

He was active in church work, especially as a Sunday School

or Bible Class teacher in the Methodist Church.

He married Rosa (Rosy) Farr and they reared one son, and a

nephew, Lester H. Kincaid. Levi and Rosa Kincaid are buried at

To this couple was born one son, Merlin Burns Kincaid, born

Jan. 28, 1909.

Merlin Burns Kincaid served with the American Army in Europe

in World War Two. He is now employed as an engineer for the State

of Ohio.

Merlin married a widow, Elva Ramsey Jarvis. They separated.

KINCAID - ALDERSON

Charles Anthony Kincaid, son of Henry Dickinson Kincaid, was

born near Glenville in Gilmer Co., West Virginia. He was educated

in Summersvillo Normal School and Marshall College. He began his

Career as a teacher and taught five years in one room schools in

Mountain Cove District, Fayette Co., West Virginia. In 1910 and

1911 he taught at Minden, West Virginia. The school terms were

short and the pay was small, so ho turned from teaching to business

in order to provide better for his family. His last business

venture in Oak Hill was the Heating and Plumbing establishment on

Central Avenue.

He moved to Princeton about two years before his death, where

he was co-owner of Central Motor Sales. He died at his home near

Princeton.

He was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and served as

Mayor of Oak Hill in 1919 and part of a years term in 1920.

On November 2, 1904, Charles Anthony Kincaid married Mary

Ellen Alderson of Summersville, West Virginia. She was the only

daughter of George and Mary Alderson. They were the parents of

nine children, five of whom survived him.

Rev. C. S. Donnaly conducted the funeral services of both Mr.

and Mrs. C. A. Kincaid. They are buried in the Knights of Pytheas

Cemetery at Hill Top.

Anthony J. Kincaid, eldest son of William McClanachan Kincaid

and Sarah Hutsenpiller, married twice.

His first wife was Almira Wood. After Almirats death, he

married again, moved to Missouri, and reared another family of

whom nothing is known. Almira Wood was the mother of five children

Charles H. Kincaid died un-married and is buried in the Fox Cemetery,.

Edwin Kincaid disappeared soon after the Spanish American War.

Laura Virginia Kincaid died of T.B. Jan. 16, 1905. She was buried

in the cemetery at Good Hope Baptist Church.

Florence Kincaid, born June 10, 1865, died Aug. 9, 1946,

married William Anderson White, born May 26, 1860 - Oct. 25, 19142.

Florence Kincaid White was the mother of seventeen children,

six of whom reached maturity. Dallas.White died at the age of

seven years. Laura White died at the age of ten years. The other

children died in infancy and were buried in the family cemetery

on their farm at Ramsey, West Virginia.

Florence Kincaid and William A. White are buried in West

Lake Cemetery at Ansted, West Virginia.

and Kenneth Withrow. Gertrude was buried in the family cemetery at

Ramsey, West Virginia.

Almira Wood was a Veteran of the Spanish American War. After the

death of his first wife, he operated a general store, in the vicinity

of Ramsey, known as The Pair Store. He had living quarters behind

the :store and he and his little daughter, . Catherine, lived there.

He lost a leg in a railroad accident that handicapped him for the

rest of his life.

In his senior years he operated a shoe shop in Ansted, West

Virginia. He married twice. He married Nellie Catherine Canterbury

April 27, 1907. He married his cousin Henrietta Virginia Cole May

7, 1924. Henrietta died April 3, 1940.

KINCAID - EARY

Saran Virginia Kincaid, daughter of William McClanachan

Kincaid and Sarah Hutsenpiller was 12 years old when her mother

died in 1854. After her mother's death she lived with her aunt

Rachel Hutsenpiller Bubger at Bubgers Mill on Milligan Creek in

Greenbrier Co.

After her marriage to Abram William Eary they lived near

Gauley R. called by the local people, "The Bend of Gauley."

They were farmers. Transportation and communication were almost

impossible. Abram Eary died when his youngest child was five

years old. Abram and Sarah Virginia Eary are buried at the

Harrah Cemetery in the vicinity of Ramsey, West Virginia.

EARY - KOONTZ

Charles William Eary was the only son of Sarah Virginia

Kincaid and Abram William Eary. He was a blacksmith by trade and

awned a shop near Ramsey P.O. He was a good citizen and served

that farming community well for many years. He would shoe

their horses or oxen, repair their wagons or farm machinery, and

make small iron articles needed by farmers.

He gave up his shop at Ramsey and moved to Fayetteville

in his senior years. He died March 6, 1964.

He married Ora Koontz, daughter of Findley Koontz, They

were the parents of three sons. The eldest son is Postmaster at

Fayetteville, Fayette Co., West Virginia. Their son, Merlin Findley

Eery, was killed in an accident Nov. 1955.

Kincaid Ancestors

James Kincaid Laird of'the Kincaid Ilk (family) in

Scotland died about 1700. He had three sons.

John who became Laird in 1701

Alexander, A Pharmacist who had five sons

David Kincaid, who came to America about 1715. He

married Winnifred Hobson. In his will he mentions four sons

John, Joseph, Hobson, and Burroughs.

Their daughter Jane Kincaid married Robert Guin (Gwinn)

of Wales. Many of their descendants are in West Virginia.

I bequeath to my beloved wife, Winnifred, 5 cows, my young

black horse, her choice of beds, furniture, and pewter.

The best of my large iron pots, also my house Bible during

her lifetime and then.to descend to my son Joseph.

My Plantation and plantation tools of every sort,

with my cross cut saw, I leave to my Grandson David (John's son),

and he is to take care of and mantain as long as he lives.

My 200 acres on Cove Neck I leave to David Simpson.

To my Grandson David, (Son of John) one red cow.

To Hobson Kincaid, my Dun Colt and my rifle gun.

To David Kincaid (Joseph's Son) my 200 acres of land at Hunters Ford.

After my debts are paid I leave the rest to the disposal of my

son John. To be disposed of among himself, his children and

Elizabeth Kincaid, and my son Burroughs two children.

That is my Grandson David and Granddaughter Phoebe.

My ready money to be divided to Elizabeth and 4 to

Burroughs two children, David and Phoebe Kincaid.

The Kincaids were attached to the Stuart Cause by

Blood and Clan loyalty.

David Kincaid Sr. , Brother of the then Laird took

part in the unsuccessful Stuart Rebellion and was obliged

to leave Scotland. He came to Spottsylvania, Virginia, and

took up land with George Robinson. Later moved to Albemarle

County, thence to Augusta and died in Bath County. He was

known as David Sr. and as David, The Builder. He built the first

jail in Augusta County, Virginia, and was appointed October 29,

1791 to make such alterations in it as were necessary and

were not included in his contract.

In December, 1845, Charles Stuart attempted again to

regain his throne and was defeatedat Stirlingshire. Four

of the sons of Alexander Kincaid fought under Cluny McPherson

Guard action following Stuart's Retreat and were

captured. This took place not far from the Kincaid Estate.

The family retainers soon learned of the captu e.

and the four brothers were spirited out of the English camp.

They were Samuel, James, George, and Robert. Two of the boys

Samuel and George were married. Their wives and children were

at Glasgow. All were put on board a ship and sent to Virginia.

They came to Virginia fairly well supplied with Siller (money),

and on the advice of their Uncle David Kincaid, Sr., settled

in Augusta County in 1746.

1. James Kincaid went South. No record.

2. George Kincaid settled on Jackson's River nearrFalling Springs,

now Alleghaney Co., about seven miles below Covington. He

was killed in an Indian Raid in 1756 and his wife and three

children were captured.

They were returned in 1764 under terms of Boauets Treaty.

Of his children only one is known, Samuel, who married Elizabeth

Wilson, and moved to Pennsylvania. He was a lieutenant in

the Virginia Militia in 1774 and was wounded in the arm in a

fight with the Indians near Wheeling, W.Va. of that year.

John Dean was administrator of George Kincaids

estate in 1756.

Robert Kincaid bought in Beverley Manor 1763, of

James Bratton 334 acres. Of Robert's Family only one child

is known. Andrew, who married Ann, daughter of his Uncle Samuel.

On June 20, 1770, Robert and Anna Heleney (Belina)

void to their son, Andrew, 159 *acres of this tract.

About 1770 Robert and Anna Heleney Kincaid moved to

Falling Spring neighborhood, followed soon after,by his son,

Andrew.

Thus John and James Kincaid who married Dean Sisters and

Andrew Kincaid Jr. were grandsons of Robert and Anna Heleney,

and grandsons of Samuel Kincaid Sr., and great grandsons of

Alexander Kincaid of Scotland (Edinburg).

Samuel Kincaid Sr.

Samuel Kincaid Sr. (name of wife unknown) first settled

in BeVerley Manor. Later moved to Falling Springs on Jacksons

River about 1765, died about 1780. Shortly before his death

in 1780 he made a deed to hisnephew Andrew Kincaid, (son of

Robert) who was also his son-in-law, to a tract of land

he had bought in 1771 from William Hamilton of Jacksons River.

Samuel Kincaid Jr. Born in Scotland about 1734

Died in Greenbrier County Jan. 23, 1819, married Margaret

Clark 1776, daughter of James Clark.

Samuel Jr. was the oldest son and heir to his father's

property. He was one of the largest Land Owners in Greenbrier

County at the time of its formation from Botetourt in 1777.

Records can be found in Greenbrier land entry Books No. 1

P. 8 and No.2 P. 130. His total holdings were over 10,000

acres. In 1780.he moved to what is now Neola on Anthony's

Creek and built a large hotel with a number of summer cottages

He was a prominent citizen. He served on the Grand Jury

1781, was commissioned Justice for Greenbrier Co. 1792, and

served as sheriff two years, 1808 and 1809.

His will dated 1816 and proved 1819 divided his real

estate on Anthony's Creek almost equally between his three

sons, giving the home or hotel to James.

Captain Robert Renick, about 1770. George and his brother

James were in Capt. Robert McClanahan's Co. of Greenbrier

Volunteers of the Botetourt Regiment and fought at the battle

of Point Pleasant under Sargeant Samuel Clark (brother of

Margaret Clark).

George inherited nothing from his father who died intestate,

Greenbrier land entry Book No. 1 P. 268 shows 200 acres to

George Kincaid, State Military Warrant 15020 - September, 1786.

Married first James Kincaid. Second a Fleshman.

James Kincaid was her first cousin, was said to be one of

the most powerful men physically in Virginia. He was

commissioned a Justice of Greenbrier Co. April 17, 1809,

and served until his death except times during which he

served as high sheriff. 1827 he was commissioned Colonel

of the 79th. Virginia Infantry but there is no evidence of

active service. After the death of Col. James, Phebe

married a Fleshman. She continued to run the hotel. She

died Jan. 16, 1858, and is buried near Neola in the Kincaid

Cemetery by Col. James Kincaid.

James Kincaid, born May 15, 1782 - died of pneumonia July 9, 1838,

son of Samuel Jr. and Margaret Clark Kincaid, married March 26,

1816 Phebe Kincaid, his first cousin. Married by Rev. John Pinnel.

In his will he divided his land equally between his two

sons.

Married Maria Louisa Hamilton at Summersville Oct. 31,1847.

He was graduated from the University of Virginia and Richmond

Medical College, and was an eminently successful and,'

universally respected, physician for many years until his death

at Frankford, Greenbrier County, W.Va. He was' a Presbyterian

and a Mason.

married Alice White, daughter of Richard White.

Robert Alexander Kincaid was born at Millpoint, Pocahontas

Co., Virginia. He matured early and untila few years

before his death was a man of exceptional physicque.

He received a classical education at Hampden- Sydney

and William and Mary Colleges. Read Law and passed the

Bar Examination and was qualified by the Nicholas Co. Court

in 1879. He practiced his chosen profession in Nicholas Co.

for many years, was prosecuting attorney two terms. He was

an outstanding specialist in Land Titles and Tax matters.

He died after a long illness at the McClung Hospital in

Richwood of Progressive Muscular Atrophy, Jan.25, 1926.

Ton a farTom A. Kincaid married Sarah. Cavendish, who was, the daughter

of Andrew and Jane McClung Cavendish.

Andrew Cavendish moved his family to Fayette County in 1835..

and settled near Wood's Ferry where he purchased about 1000.:1

acres of land at 500 an acre and lived there until he died: abOut:

1870. His land was divided amon&his children and was cut up

into several farms. Sarah Cavendish Kincaid was his ninth (9) child.

No relation has been established between the descendants

of John Dean Kincaidls Family and john A. Kincaid.

John A. Kincaid and Sarah Cavendish are buried at the Fox

Cemetery. They were the parents of two boys, twins, who died

the same year.
