The New Personal Diving Equipment project is a development which was initiated by Statoil and lead by Technip to improve offshore commercial diving

A COMMITTMENT TO SAFETY AND RELIABILITY This development offers technology that will improve diver safety by controlling and monitoring of the divers’ breathing gas and physical status. More bailout endurance and options. In addition to higher cost efficiency, and better quality assurance of the work compared to today’s equipment.

MAIN BENEFITS OF THE NEW PDE • Safer and more comfort to the diver, more efficient diver

• More and simplified bailout functions, longer bailout endurance

• Lower work of breathing

• Very low self induced noise

• Thinner and lighter umbilical

• Better communication

• Two high resolution cameras, including one handheld inspection camera

• Monitoring of the divers breathing gas in real time online

• 180 other relevant parameters

• All can be displayed on the supervisor screen or reviewed at a later date

• All parameters are logged and stored in a database as well as electronically in a ‘black box’ system built into the unit

FAST FACTS

Technip has been the main investor and responsible for developing the Personal Diving Equipment (PDE) since 2006 in cooperation with Statoil. May 27 th (2011) Unique Martime Group and Technip entered an agreement for further development of the PDE, both technically and commercially.

The equipment will be trialed for operational fitness onboard one of Technip’s vessels in 2012. Unique Maritime Group is responsible for production, marketing and aftersales.

UMBILICAL SUPPORTED REBREATHER (USR)The heart of the system is an electronically controlled variable orifice rebreather functions as both the primary and secondary breathing system. This system replaces currently used ship based gas reclaim equipment.

The system can operate as either a Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR) by only replacing the divers use of O2 or as a Semi Closed Circuit Rebreather (SCR) by feeding it with any breathable diluents gas.

The electronics keeps the set partial pressure of O2 stable regardless of the divers depth. The Underwater Terminator (UT) located on top of the rebreather provides the interface via the diver’s umbilical to the Bell and on to the support vessel. It provides digital multiplexed redundant data paths via electrical and optical elements for:

•Systemcontrol&monitoring

•Digitalvoicecommunicationsanddualhighresolution video

•Power&powermanagement

•Controloflighting,under-suitandrebreathergasheating

•Helmetclosureintegrityalarmand

•Diveralarm

DIVER’S EXCURSION UMBILICALA critical success factor for the project is to reduce the size of the diver’s bell excursion umbilical. A reduction to app. 26 mm from 60 to 70 mm has been achieved by placing power, data and small bore gas elements around the surface supplied gas hose. There is an option for a conventionally wound umbilical using commercially off the shelf components whilst still offering significant reduction in size.

CONTRIBUTORTechnip has been the diving services provider managing the project. Utilising its diving experience in the development of the equipment. Initial operational implementation will be onboard Technip vessels. Unique Maritime Group are in the process of establish a cot efficient production line. Unique will have the full responsibility for the commercialisation of the equipment.

COMPLETION Equipment now performing reliably, Unique are now transferring the development in to production, supported by Technip.

It is scheduled to be on the market by 2012.

SYSTEM No reclaim gas to the surface

• Less equipment

• Less maintenance

• Less cost

Highly flexible can be used from surface to 400 meter with an appropriate breathable gas mix.

SATURATION DIVING Highly Gas efficiency.

• Usage of gas less than 2 litre/min SEV.

• No waste of helium or other diluent gases

Saving between 10 000 to 15 000 m3 a year of helium/vessel, for depth between 100 to 170 msw.

SURFACE SUPPLIED DIVING Usage of gas less than 2 litre/min SEV, compared to 40 litre/min at operating depth.

• Pre-setconstantppO2

• Higher safety

• Less decompression

Gas saving between 5 and 10 m3 SEV pr hour, for depth between 10 to 30 msw. Less complex gas panel, full monitoring of diver parameters, full logging

INVESTORSInitially financed by Statoil, continued financed by Technip NO, now supported by Technip NO, Technip UK and Unique Maritime Group.

60M NOK has been invested so far. For completion we are looking at a total investment of 90M NOK.
