    PRACTICAL 3

Aim: To create node to node connection using LAN trainer (Cisco Packet Trainer) then use

    various network commands.

    Theory:

Local Area Network: A Local Area Network (LAN) is a computer network that connects

computers and devices in a limited geographical area such as home, school, computer laboratory

    or office building.

ARCNET, Token Ring and other technology standards have been used in the past,

but Ethernet overtwisted paircabling and Wi-Fi are the two most common technologies currently

    in use.

    Cisco Packet Tracer:

Cisco Packet Tracer is a powerful network simulator that provides virtual networking

    environment.

    Components of a Network:

    Router:

A router is a device that forwards data packetsbetween telecommunications networks, creating

an overlay internetwork. A router is connected to two or more data lines from different networks. When data comes in on one of the lines, the router reads the address information in the packet to

    determine its ultimate destination.

    Router

    Switch:

The term commonly refers to a multi-port network bridge that processes and routes data at

the data link layer(layer 2) of the OSI model. Switches that additionally process data at

the network layer(Layer 3) and above are often referred to as Layer 3 switches ormultilayer

    switches.

    Hub:

An Ethernet hub, active hub, network hub, repeater hub orhub is a device for connecting

multiple twisted pairorfiber optic Ethernet devices together and making them act as a

single network segment. Hubs work at the physical layer(layer 1) of the OSI model.[1]

    The

device is a form ofmultiport repeater. Repeater hubs also participate in collision detection,

forwarding a jam signal to all ports if it detects a collision.

    Hub

    Switch vs. Router:

Switches create a network whereas Routers connect a network. A router links computers to the

internet, so users can share the connection. A router acts as dispatcher, choosing the best path for

information to travel so it is received quickly.

Steps: 1 Switch 4 Terminal System

    1. Start Cisco Packet Tracer (Simulator). Packet Tracer is a simulator which providesvirtual environment for learning network behavior.

    2. Select Switch (4 ports)from Device-type selection box.3. Name the switch to LAN1.4. Make a virtual LAN network using a switch and 4 end terminals (End Terminals can be

    PCs , Laptops etc.)

    5. Configure the network by manually providing eitherClass A , B orC type IP Address.6. Check the network by pinging terminal itself and ping other terminals from anyone

    terminal.

Screen shot on next page shows the steps:
