Between the Wheels

Tony RicheyRegion President

Every year, for many years now, I’ve told myself the same thing. No, it’s not that I’m getting more ro-tund, or that I’m losing hair where I want it and getting it where I don’t, although those things are undeniably true. My mantra during the spring is that my swamp cooler can make it one more season. Sure it can! Why not? It survived last year – right? Up on the roof is a good place to contemplate the entropic nature of rust (Neil was right – it really never sleeps) and the upcoming events of the next few weeks. By the time you read this, of course, Fiesta del Porsche 2010 will be an historic event. Not just be-cause it’s in the past, or that it’s the first Fiesta in three years, but because I know we’ve got some ex-citing activities planned, and Porscheophiles driving in from all over the West. But I can review that next month. This past weekend, I spent some time with one of our new members during the Georgia O’Keeffe Country drive-out. He had just purchased a brand-new Carrara White Boxster Spyder, the kind you’ve seen in the ads recently. What a gorgeous piece of equipment. He said his friends tried to talk him into a new S2000, but he couldn’t resist the Spyder. Wel-come to the club! I had never been on the road that connects highways 85 and 550. What a great drive! The weekend before that, I won my class at Die Serie #3 autocross at Route 66, a first for me (when-ever someone else has been in my class on a par-ticular day). We had a better turn-out than usual (for this year), with a howling, frosty morning followed by a warm sedate afternoon. Usually this time of year, the wind picks up later in the day, so we were very fortunate. For June, we’ve got an important gathering on the 20th. Our Social Chairperson, Dennis Chamber-

lain, will host the New Member Social at his house at 12:00 noon. Any of you who have joined the club during the past year should strongly consider coming to this event. We’ll try to have all the club’s elected officials there, and anyone else in the club is invit-ed too. If there are no instructions in this month’s Ramblings, I’ll make sure to get RSVP information out to the membership as soon as possible. A few years ago, Jude and I attended this party, and it really helped us get started actively with the club, to match faces and voices with names, and get excited about the prospect of belonging to a car club, which neither of us had done before. The other two events in June are the Germany Invades Burque Car Show on the 12th, which is a charity event gleaning any of the German marques to come out to PS Performance, one of our fine spon-sors; and Die Serie #5 on the 19th, held at the vener-able Calvary Chapel in Belen. Red chile, green chile, and swamp coolers. Try explaining any of those to someone outside of the Roadrunner region. The fan just kicked on, no leaks, and it smells like wood chips in the house. Ah, May in the Land of Enchantment! I hope to see you soon. Take care!

As a run-up to Fiesta del Porsche, Road-runner member Bob Blossom organized and ran a “practice tour” of the Georgia O’Keeffe Country Tour that he would be leading during Fiesta in order to get an idea of the timing, running with several cars, how the roads would be, how the lunch would be orga-nized, etc. Often times, where the same tour is offered twice, so close together, attendance at both can dwindle. But in this case many of the people on the tour would be participating either as tour-leaders or on different tours during Fiesta. So this was their chance to sample the Northern New Mexico roads under Bob’s

guidance and to have some fun of their own before their Fiesta duties got under way.

For those coming from Albu-querque (where the Fiesta tour will start) it meant doing some traveling before even getting to the “fun” part (not that driving a Porsche isn’t ALWAYS fun!). But once the crew north of Santa Fe, the roads and view broke out of the familiar Sand-ia-crest dominated view that so many are constantly reminded of. Heading north, the geogra-phy and the geology change dramatically. The mountains around Santa Fe have a dif-ferent feel and just once one is north of Espanola, the rock formations look like something more akin to the Moab area

of Utah, with many-layered rock outcroppings that rise several hundred feet above the valley floor and pose themselves against the expansive New Mexico sky. It’s not the reason that Georgia O’Keeffe came west (that probably had something to do with svengali Alfred Stieglitz’s lifestyle), but it is the reason that she stayed. Even if one never lifted a brush, O’Keeffe’s images of the Abiquiu/Ghost Ranch/Taos areas are beyond beautiful. They are iconic and cemented New Mexico’s state motto as The Land of En-chantment. Certainly the added bonus of driving with a group of Porsches on some of the world’s most beauti-ful highways was not lost on the “test-group” and will have added to the experience

of the Fiesta-goers from around the country. Rather than simply back-tracking back down through Espanola and Santa Fe on their way

back to Bernalillo and Albuquer-que, a beautiful detour was part of the “E-ticket” ride through our magical state. After a visit to the beauti-ful Echo Basin State Park, the group came south to Abiquiu and took a turn onto NM 96 that heads over through La Jara and Regina before finally joining up with 550 and swinging south through Cuba and down through San Ysidro and Bernalillo. It was a day for great adventures, beautiful vistas, and fantastic Porsche friendships.

Fiesta del Porsche should be a ball!

The Billy the Kid Challenge and Texas BBQ of June 1988: Opening up our historical archives brings up a feel-ing of nostalgia, times of a less complicated world and an era that had no cell phones, no onboard computers and no email. A time when people still communicated with hand written letters and all the Roadrunner members of the board published their personal home addresses in the Ramblings in case someone wanted to write up a letter to send via postal service. The Billy the Kid Challenge of 1988 is one of such nostalgia-provoking events, a sensational summer weekend in Fort Sumner, NM. Women played a big part in the racing events, two from the West Texas Region and Roadrunners Mary Hanna along with Liz Bauman who made second and fourth place, re-spectively. In fact, an appearance by a Rocky

Mountain region member was a pleasant surprise as Dave Mitchell made the drive all the way from Denver. By day the Porsches would race across the track and by night friends would gather under the star studded night sky and enjoy a classic Texas BBQ. On this particular evening Larry Pitt-

sley, Roadrunner President planned to have generators to provide evening light, but the full moon was so bright on that Saturday night that they were not required. Sounds like a great weekend!

This event was yet more proof of why the Roadrunner Region is the greatest region of the best club any car-nut can be a part of. First I must mention that yet another autocross was hassled by weather, however, this story ends in a most happy ending! With 25 entrants, I believe this is our largest auto-cross attendance this year, but I know we can do better (this means YOU). I think this was the most exceptional auto-cross I have attended for years and if you missed it, here’s what you missed. Camarade-rie was abound displaying the true colors of the Roadrunner Region, that spread even to the non-members to volun-teer, work, sponsor, drive, learn, whatever was required to make this a smooth event with everyone leaving with a smile. This single event was

proof again why RR is the best region in PCA, and I think we may have rubbed some of that onto other clubs as well. Ok, back to the event. The Weather was looking dismal early on the morning of May 8th, winds were cold and strong, with the look of rain all

around the casino. With 25 experienced entrants and cold weather the driver’s meeting was short and sweet; everyone knew where to work, and on cold tires, safety was on everyone’s mind. Drivers/workers agreed to a compressed run schedule that allowed all entrants 5 runs in the morning, before breaking for lunch. Maybe it was the weather, or autocross experienced people, but from here, everything clicked into place and the 45 minute break from Drivers’ meeting to first car seemed way too long. I’m always amazed with how this club can run a seemingly complex event without a hitch. Fiestas

seem that way, and this autocross was no problem for anyone, even with a new course and a new host. Right on schedule, first car was out onto the new course, which ended in all smiles (a good sign for a course designer). In fact, the only point of interest for the morning is that the weather slowly improved, and drivers finished each run challenged, and looking happy. With all runs complete we reevalu-ated the weather at 11:30 and decided to continue in the afternoon, allowing us a calm relaxing lunch at Route 66 Casino Buffet. I must mention that it would be easy for me to stay at this buffet for hours, as it is very good and great hospitality. In fact, due to its close vicinity to ABQ and the great buffet, I prioritize this venue over others for my attendance. Beginning of the Afternoon, the weather was warm, winds were down, and drivers were eager to get back on course. We opted for another 6 runs that afternoon, which yielded the fastest run times from all of us, with FTD and Fastest Porsche of the

After 11 runs on this fast course, we were ready to end the day, with again many volunteers assisting to pack up everything leaving the lot clean and empty. For those of you who have been to an autocross before, this event was great, and there is no easy way for me to explain here how the entire group comes together for the day allowing all to have a lot of fun. For those of you who have not been to an autocross, come on out and see what they are, even grab an instructor for a ride; after all, the club does have loaner helmets, so make use of them.

Nuts and Volts by William Agnew

For all of you who have been dreaming of getting a newer Porsche, here’s my take on the differences between air cooled cars and newer machines, based on personal experience. I wrote this two years ago for Porsche Market Letter, and I’ve since sold the 997 I raved about here. ( The original article was a bit long, so we’ve divided into several installments for the coming months. Ed.) I’ve been running around for almost a year in the latest thing in Porsche 911s, a 2006 Carrera S. Before I made the hefty down payment for my used seal gray coupe, I had worried how the car would satisfy in the long run, compared to the 1995 993 I’d enjoyed for seven years. It was my experience with BMW’s that made me wary of spending big bucks on a new car, for I had sold an almost new V8 540i after only three years of ownership, dissatisfied that the dynamic feel of that high performance sedan had been buried under the weight of luxury pretensions and content. Would a new 911 suffer the same fate? With 997’s weighing about 150 pounds more than 993’s, having refined creature comforts that could mask

input from the car and from the road, and being assembled with globalized manufacturing processes devoid of hand built character, it wasn’t out of the question that the newer car might not have long term thrill power. Here’s what I’ve learned so far. StylingThe older car looks better to me than the new one, which has lost bits of interesting detail that could have provided another level of visual scale to the overall design. Gone is the cabin air intake set off by nice creases in the center of the hood, gone is the rear window glass recessed below the plane of the sweeping roof line, and gone are the piping-like rubber gaskets between some of the exterior body panels, replaced by oversized plastic front and rear bumpers pieces, and an ugly plastic fascia between the hood and the windshield, where there used to be a steel cowl. Wider through the middle than the 993, the 997’s fender flares aren’t as prominent, or as sensuous. From all the thumbs up I get at stop lights when I drive the 997 I’ve concluded most people think it looks just great. To me something’s been lost. (continued next month)

Depending on your view of what Porsche is and should be, this could be one of the most exciting times to be a Porsche enthusiast…or one of the worst. The technol-ogy improvements that Porsche has been introduc-ing to its road and racing cars in the past few years are staggering, perhaps even more revolutionary that its development rate in the 1960s and early 1970s. Gains in handling, power, usability, fuel efficiency, and even ecological concerns have meant that Porsche is almost unrecognizable from its incarnations of just twenty years ago. I know for many of you that’s been a point of contention. Many Porsche enthusiasts are worried about how their favorite marque will be de-veloping now that it’s part of the VW group of brands. But many people expressed dismay when Porsche went to water-cooled engines with the 911…but also before that with the 924, 944, 968, and 928 line of front-engined cars. And that’s not even mentioning the Cayenne and Panamera SUV and Sedans. But pushing technology and perception has always been a point of contention with Porsche fans. I’ve heard many “purists” say that Porsche should never have any car other than the air-cooled 911. Others say that things went wrong after the 356. But perceptions change with every genera-tion and every group of enthusiasts. It wasn’t that long ago that people were complaining about the Boxster as being a “watered down” 911. But look how popu-lar the Boxster and Cayman lines have become. The once reviled 914 has taken on whole new aura in the 2000s, with many restored versions showing up at concours events and many 914s still doing very well at autocrosses. There was a time when all-wheel drive was both revered of as futuristic (on the 959 and 953 su-percar and rally car) and reviled as “un-pure” and

over-civilized on the 964. But all-wheel drive is com-mon and appreciated on C4 and Turbo-models. The Cayenne, once reviled as the beginning of the end for Porsche is one of its best selling models and, espe-cially during these difficult economic times, has helped keep Porsche afloat with its most steady sales. The acceptance of the Cayenne hit home for me at Parade this past year in Keystone. When I pulled up to the line at the autocross in San Diego I was the very first and only one of three to be on the wrong end of some woe-ful stares. But at Keystone, I was only one of 12 Cay-ennes of various levels of power and handling. There were even discussions of having multiple classes for Cayennes going into future Parade Rules. Now comes the hybrid version of the Panam-era and Cayenne and KERS competition GT3 and con-cept super-car 918. One can already hear the groans about impurity. But in my view, they’re all Porsches and are efforts by the world’s best car company to push the limits of technology in new areas in ways that no other car-company has. When the first hybrid Toyo-tas and Hondas and the first KERS F1 cars arrived on the scene, I regarded them in the same way that we now look at early Daimler and Ford cars compared to today’s models: the first in a long line of development that will see great leaps in efficiency and evolution. Who would have thought in 1890 that the automobile would become the powerful and sophisticated vehicle it has become. But it didn’t happen at once and it didn’t happen without someone attempting to push the en-velope in the arenas of luxury, sophistication, and in competition. In all of these areas, Porsche has been a leader since its first car drove down the road from Gmund. For Porsche to back away from any new tech-nological concept would be a cop-out from its mission and reputation. More so, to not take on the challenge of leading in any kind of technological advancement would be a loss of its original intent and spirit. I, for one, am looking forward to the day when Porsche de-velops hybrid and KERS technology to the same level that it has with automatic transmissions (another topic of scorn in the not-so-distant past). The Tiptronic was recognized as a great leap forward in automatics and the PDK is now looking to supplant manuals for those who consider performance more important than “tradi-tional” aesthetics of shifting. When the GT3 R Hybrid (a KERS-assisted system) races at Nurburgring this spring, the world will be watching to see what kind of

Page 29 Roadrunner Ramblings June 2010

In the Zone

unfair advantage Porsche has found with the system. The 918 is threatened to go into production soon be-cause of the high amount of interest it has generated. It won’t be that long before other super-car manufac-turers take up the challenge and start offering their own versions of high-performance hybrids and KERS-assisted vehicles both on the road and for the track, each with their own performance tweaks and the race will be on for the next generations of performance and efficiency gains. The VW “takeover” is for some a tragedy, but remember that the current chair of the VW group, Fer-dinand Piech is the same person who masterminded the 908 and the 917 cars which took Porsche from winning class victories to overall ones. If there’s any-one who is interested in keeping Porsche in the fore-front of road- and racing-car design it is him. I believe that Porsche has a long and prosperous future ahead of it and I’m very glad to be a member of the club of its biggest fan-base as it races into the future with new types of technology and performance gains. Yet, like all of us, I still love its heritage and tradition. I think the two go hand in hand.See you at an event soon.
