Dear PCA,

I have just attended my first PC ANSW State Camp at SIEC, forMounted Games. It was amazing to even be on these grounds, letalone ride there under instruction from such great instructors.

I just want to thank PCANSW for this great opportunity. I learntmany valuable lessons and hundreds of new skills, honed theones I already had and had some much fun. I made friends thatI would never have had a chance at meeting otherwise.

It is a great challenge to make ti to one of these camps, and Iam so grateful that I was able to. If it weren’t for the dedicationsthat the Pony Club Association has shown to this event, then somany of us that attended would have missed out on thisvaluable opportunity.

I would especially like to thank Mr Bennett for putting his timeinto making this camp as big a learning experience as it couldbe and ensuring we were well looked after and had fun. Thankyou also to Mr Harris, Mr Logue and Kim for making sureeverything ran smoothly and motivating us all to give and try ourbest. Lastly thank you to Mr Braham, Mrs Frankum, Dr Kelleher,Kaz, Edwena and others for organising and running this camp, and making it all possible.

Yours sincerely

Lauren Vest, Belconnen Pony Club – Zone 16

Dear PCA NSW,

I am writing to say thank you for allowing me to ride at StateCamp this year. It was the first year I have been able to go andI had a great time. I had Glenys Barrey for my instructor indressage and she was great, I learnt a lot and it was good to beable to ride in the indoor arena sometimes.

Getting out of bed each morning to go for a run was a bit of astruggle, especially when the alarm went off 5 minutes early, that 5 minutes extra sleep was very important to me, I think it isMr Braham I blame for that! Although I really appreciate youletting me walk it because of my legs.

I met heaps of people from all over the state and it was great funmeeting up again with some of the people who went over toPerth. The food was great thank you Edwena.

Thank you again to all the organisers.

Kimberley Duver, Coffs Harbour PC – Zone 9

Dear PCA,

I would like to thank everyone at PCANSW for the fabulous timeI had at this years State Camp. Dressage is my chosen disciplineand having Glenys Barrey, as instructor was excellent. I and myhorse Gus improved so much throughout the camp. As this wasmy first year at State Camp I did not know many people, butsoon made great new friends and I am looking forward to nextyears camp (hopefully I will be selected again).

It was such a great experience to ride and learn whereOlympians have competed at themselves, SIEC. Thank you forsuch a fun and exciting camp.

Caitlin Hockey, Zone 9

Letters to the AssociationDear PCA,

Thank you for the opportunity to attend the State Camp 2006. Ihad a fantastic time, made new friends and ‘Pete’ and I learntheaps. The venue was great, the food was yummy and all theinstructors etc were friendly and helpful. I will definitely beapplying next year and I will be encouraging all eligible membersof my Club and Zone to apply.

Gemma Rosser and ‘Dads Money’, Hay Po ny Club – Zone 21

Dear President and Committee,

Thank you for having me to the State Camp in January. I had awonderful time!!

A special thanks to all who helped with my selection: CollarenebriPony Club, Zone 8 Chief Instructor and State Camp selectors.

Home for me is in an extremely remote place, in the North West.I am an hour’s drive from any small town. Its 9 hours to Sydneyby car. Obtaining lessons with riding means we drive for hours.Having 4 days in Sydney with talented instructors was just great.

Lots and lots of new friends were made. I have since caught upwith some at the State Dressage and I know more will be at theInterschools, in February.

Here are some points that I feel could be improved upon for thenext camp:

• three riding session daily/more coaching• instructors to break the theory into small segments, rather

than all at the start of a lesson• have more organised activities for the evenings

It was very kind and generous of the Pony Club Association tohelp pay for the costs for this camp. Thank you.

Lucy Remond – Collarenebri Pony Club, Zone 8

Dear PCA,

Thank you so much for yet another fantastic State Camp. Thiswas the fourth camp I have attended and I can say withouth es i tation that they just keep getting better and better. I appreciate the monumental effort involved in co-ordinatingsuch an event and sincerely thank you all for giving up your timeto do so.

The level of instruction this year was fabulous and I learnt a lotin the week, as did many other riders. A big thank you must alsogo to all of the other riders for making it such an enjoyable week.It is a rare opportunity to train at an Olympic venue alongsidesuch food riders and coaches and everyone at PCA must bethanked for making it available to us. Last but definitely not least,Edwena Mitchell must be congratulated on her beautifulcooking. Edwena outdoes herself every year and provides one ofthe main incentives for many riders to reapply for State Campeach year!

Thank you PCA and well done.

Report to the Council Meeting of the Association

By Mr Roger Braham OAM, State PresidentTUESDAY 29th NOVEMBER 2006

The Pony Club Association of New South Wales hasexperienced an extremely busy year. Certainly one of themost important services supplied directly by theAssociation, is the provision of instruction to membersand during the year under review. There have been 105days of instruction. These include: - Instructors Schools,Junior Regional Schools, Specialist Schools, SeniorRegional Schools and State Training Squads. These aresupplemented by rally days and other instruction daysorganised by and conducted within individual clubs andzones. Details of those provided by the Association arecontained in the annexure attached to this report, whichalso includes the eight State Championships held. For the first time these included Show Ri d i n gChampionships which were held at Morisset in Zone 24.They proved popular and were a great success. Clearlythey should be continued on an annual basis, as are allour State Championships.

A highlight of the year was the National Championshipsheld in Western Australia in July 2005, to which I will latermake reference in this report.

In my report last year, I referred to the slight decrease inmembers during 2004. This slight decrease continued inthe year 2005. The decreases were only a shade over 2%,and they followed increases of about the sa m ep e r c e n ta g es in the three preceding years, butnevertheless they represent a trend which should anddoes concern us. Last year, I said that I believed theproblem was members losing interest at somewhereroundabout the age of 14 years. I hoped that somebodywould come up with the some solution. We haven’t beenpresented with the perfect remedy, yet.

However during the Queens Birthday long weekend inJune this year, the Pony Club Association of New SouthWa l es is to conduct a Conference & Youth Forum at which, amongst other subjects, this problem will be addressed. Inp a rt i c u l a r, it is requested that junior members from the ageof 15 and associate members should attend, the Yo u t hForum, a one day “ta l k f es t ”, with a professional facilita t o r.Only these young persons will be able to attend the ta l k f es tand we hope they will express their views on Pony Clubg e n e r a l l y, their likes and dislikes, why they have remainedin Pony Club and perhaps why some of their friends havenot done so. What else they would like to have. We expectthat this will be a very wide-ranging, uninhibited discussionout of which the facilitator’s report will be given and laterp r esented to the conference. We want their thoughts ands u g g estions and we earnestly hope that this will greatlyassist in the preparation of a blueprint for the future ofPony Club.

We have been supported in this endeavour by theD e p a rtment of Sport and Recreation, with a granttowards the anticipated expense, which is greatlyappreciated. I am aware that other states and indeedother sports are very interested in what we are doing andare keen to view our results. The problem is undoubtedly, widespread.

I urge everybody who has any interest in Pony Club, to dohis or her utmost to attend and encourage young peopleto do so. There will be other lectures or discussions whilstthe Youth Forum is in progress and throughout theweekend. Reasonably short l y, a programme will beprepared and forwarded to Clubs and Zones. Thoseattending the Youth Forum will be welcome at the otherlectures and discussions later in the weekend. Please, everybody support us in trying to secure a bright future inPony Club for our present members and those who willjoin in the years to come.

A NNUAL CA MP

As usual in these reports I refer to the last annual camp,in this case that which was held in January last.

Those who were chosen form the many applicants, allregard themselves as extremely fortunate to be there, toreceive the instruction from the Level 3 EFA, excellentinstructors who attend. They also very obviously, enjoy thecompany of those with common interests. The facilities atthe Sydney International Equestrian Centre areo u ts tanding, although during this last camp, air–conditioning would not have gone astray. I take my hatoff to the executive members who give their time incarryi8ng out all of the duties necessary to make thecamp run smoothly and I particularly mention Dr FrankKelleher, who has attended all of the camps since theircommencement. The instructors this year were, MountedGames, Rob Bennett who was assisted this year by adeputy, Dave Harris from Zone 16; Dressage, GlenysBarrey; Showjumping, George Sanna and Eventing. SamLyle. Our chef was Edwena Mitchell. Last year I set out thep a rticular duties of the individual members of theExecutive. The same duties were carried out by each ofthem this year and I can only say they are getting evenbetter at the jobs they have assumed.

Whilst in the past, we have not been entirely withoutsome problems of discipline or behaviour, I am certainthat we all agree that this camp was of 60 members, all ofwhom have acted as we expect Pony Club members toact. It was a very happy camp.

INTERS TATE CH A MPIONSHIPS

We have had members attending practically allQueensland State Championships. The reports we have, all stressed the wonderful welcome given to our members, which is very much appreciated and I re-iterate,Queensland members are always assured of a welcome atour State Championships. I would like to think that wecould have similar happy exchanges with some otherstates, particularly those with whom we share a commonborder, even though it would be mean I in most cases, crossing the Murray River.

N ATIONAL CH A MPIONSHIPS

These were outstanding in every respect. 28 horses weretransported from New South Wales to Perth, WesternAustralia. By some riders, competing in more than onediscipline, we very nearly had full teams of six in each ofthe Olympic disciplines, both under 17 and associates. Ourr es u l ts, which have been reported elsewhere, wereexcellent, particularly after such a long journey for thehorses. Preparation of their horse for this and particularlythe transporting, was a great learning curve for the teammembers, their numerous friends and helpers whoaccompanied then, their parents and the team managers. All of the States produced very competent riders on someoutstanding horses; the competition was tough but mostimportantly the spirit of competition between the Stateswas exemplary. Prince Phillip Mounted Games and SeniorMounted Games were also conducted. I have no doubtthat this national event which New South Wa l esinaugurates, at Wagga Wagga in 1995, has become apermanent fixture; hopefully every two years. The PonyClub Association of Queensland which has hitherto beena little reticent in putting its hand up, is to conduct thesechampionships in 2007 at Toowoomba. They are tocommence on the 1st July and between now and then, fulldetails will be available and will be circularised throughour Association. I hope we have lots of excellent riderswho aspire to membership of our team.

NSW has indicated that it shall most likely apply to holdthe Nationals in 2009. It is a bit early to make a fullcommitment.

INTERN ATIONAL REPRESENTATION

In 2005 the International Mounted Games were held inAustralia, South Australia being the host State. The NewSouth Wales member of the team was Samantha Ceccatoof Zone 22, the coach and chaperones were Rob andDalene Bennett. The weeks training for the team was heldat the Hartog’s property at Castlereagh. This generousfamily throws its property and residence open to our StateSquad on a regular basis and I know this is greatlyappreciated by everybody involved.

I should draw attention to what the Bennett’s are doing forMounted Games in Pony Club. This year they are to takethe Australian Team to the United Kingdom. This cameabout as no one else had applied to be coach. Because of

the change in administration of the APCC and theconsequential loss of all records, the president of theAPCC took the view that we had to have experiencespeople to take on this job. The Bennett’s were approachedto do this. On top of this, New Zealand invited anAustralian team to go to its championships in early May.Again, presumably because of the change inadministration and loss of the APCC email address, theinvitation was not received until quite late, by which time,it was stated that it was too late for the APCC to choose ateam. I said New South Wales would do so. As a result ofthis, the Bennett’s are taking a team which is made up oftwo from each NSW and Victoria and one from SouthAustralia. Having made the offer, I rang Rob Bennett, toldhim what I had done and left all the work to him and hiswife. This is not a funded team, so they all have to meettheir own expenses.

Apart from the time of the actual tours, in both of thecases the Bennett’s have been involved in practically all ofthe organisation, as well as the actual travelling, withminimal financial assistance. We expect then, of course tocoach and take our state team to the Prince Philip GamesChampionships in Victoria this year and in the meantimeto conduct the squad weekends each month. You mayunderstand why a deputy has been appointed.

It is also interesting note that our other Mounted Gamescoach extraordinaire, Phil Logue has included theAustralian Mounted Games Association in his interes ts .Each year he seems to go somewhere overseas with a teamfrom this Association. This year he is taking a team toGermany and Sweden in July/August. Tomorrow he leavesfor the USA where he has been invited by the MountedG a m es Association of that country, to coach its members.

Bree Furze from Zone 12 was the New South Walesmember of the 2005 Interpacific Exchange in Canada.Bree attended one of our Council meetings and herenthusiastic report and the manner in which she gave itcaptivated every councillor. I have heard her speak tochildren of all ages and their parents at Pony Club campsabout her trip. Clearly she was a wonderful ambassadorfor Australia and our Association and she is certainly agreat supporter of Pony Club and the InterpacificExchange Programme.

A US TRALIAN PONY CLUB COUNCIL( A PCC )

The Annual Meeting of the Council is to be held in lateApril in Darwin. There is a Notice of Motion to change thecouncil’s name to “Pony Club Australia Inc”. I believe thatwill occur.

The problem of the method of selection for InternationalMounted Games Teams is again on the agenda and NewSouth Wales has proposed that each State should send upto two members to a training camp where they will becoached and at the same time, a team will be chosen.New South Wales has offered to conduct the first camp. The New South Wales Notices of Motion are set out in a

Page 6: PCA NSW - National · PDF fileDear PCA NSW, I am writing to say ... Games, Rob Bennett who was assisted this year by a ... Showjumping, George Sanna and Eventing. Sam Lyle. Our chef

further annexure to this report. There is strong oppositionfrom Tasmania which wants the former system to remainin place; that is, that each state selects one member of theteam, so that a Tasmanian member, for example, wherethere are about 800 members, has a one in 800 chance ofselection, whereas a New South Wales member, has abouta one in 14000 chance of selection. In addition to the factthat it is far easier to represent Australia if you live inTasmania or the Northern Territory which has about 300members, than if you live in the larger States, Rob Bennettwill tell you that the present system, from time to time, results in a member of the team not being of the standard expected.

These Notices of Motion are not precisely what I hadhoped, but I believe there is a chance that they will becarried and they certainly represent a much fairer methodof choosing the team than the former method.

The Instruction Sub-committee seems to have just aboutcompleted the new syllabus for certificates and as soon asthis occurs and copies are available, Clubs and Zones willbe notified.

FIN A NCES

Doug Denby will shortly present his financial report, whichagain is most satisfactory. Although a lot of assistancewas given to those who travelled with their horses toPerth, there remains a slight surplus for the year. Thesupport that we enjoy from the Department of Tourism,Sport and Recreation is much appreciated as is thesupport from our Newsletter sponsor, Horseland. Theamount received from the Department is a little down onprevious years. We just hope we continue to receive suchfinancial support. It would be wonderful if we could obtain sponsorship.

INSUR A NCE

There was a time not so long ago when this subjectformed a major part of any annual report. It has nearlybecome mundane, premiums have barley changed andour claims record remains excellent. I need not say anymore, but I will.

Please all remain vigilant, see accidents before theyhappen. Obey the Pony Club rule, to provide a horse – freearea for motor vehicles. Park your motor vehicles in thosehorse-free areas or suffer the consequences if you don’t!

A DMINIS TR ATION

Jenny Amadio has kept the work flowing throughout theyear. Her assistant Debbie, who commenced at the start ofthe year, found the job not fully to her liking and resigned.

In her place we now have Teena Murdoch, who comesfrom a position with the EFA NSW. She is working on apart-time basis, three days per week but was able to work

fulltime during Jenny’s absence on holiday, skiing inJapan. Jenny has confirmed that she is able to conduct thework with a part time, but I should point out, experiencedassistant.

There are now many of our clubs joined up to the MyClubsites and using if for affiliations. I commend this procedureand urge as many as possible to adopt it. The web sitec o n tains an extraordinary amount of information formembers and assistance to them by having so many of theforms required form time to time, available on it.

I don’t know what to tell you about the situation of theoffice. During the year it was definitely confirmed thatSports House was moving to Homebush and that officespace would be available to us therein; not our own office, but an area within a large open space. The executive didnot believe this would be satisfactory and started makingi n q u i r i es and giving consideration to various otherpossible options.

Since then, it appears that the Wentworth Park Trust, which will revert to the administration of the presentSports House Building, may very well continue to provideoffice space for us. The EFA has moved out and we havetaken over its former offices, thus allowing much morespace, which was sorely needed. I hope very much thatthis becomes a permanent arrangement. At this stage weare endeavouring to keep all options open. It would seemthat the days of free accommodation are numbered andtherefore future rentals will form an important part ofsubsequent deliberations.

On behalf of you all, I thank Jenny for her interest, enthusiasm and hard work for our Association. I welcomeTeena to the fold and I look forward to a long and happyassociation with her in our administration.

S TATE COA CHES

You will see from the attachment hereto that JaneFrankum and the other State coaches have increased theamount of work that they have been doing. The reportsthat we get from people who attend the various schoolsand squads are very positive and I thank Coaches for their efforts.

THE EXE CUTIVE

This is a group, all of whom give many hours voluntarily asdo many persons in their Clubs and Zones, throughout theS tate. Pony Club could not exist without all thes ededicated people. I thank all of them on behalf of allmembers. I am sure that all the Executive get a lot ofenjoyment and satisfaction out of what they do and I amequally sure that there are many other people in ourAssociation who would get similar enjoyment. Perhapsthey should consider making themselves available toserver on the executive.

Bingara, in Zone 8 has done it again and hosted a verysuccessful State Championship, this time the DressageChampionships (for the second time).

The weather was hot but with its lovely shade treesaround the ground, there was relief from the sun forhorses and people. The free bus to and from the localswimming poll was very popular and the town people arealways so friendly.

With less entries than usual the number of arenas wasreduced to five with the Under 25, Under 17 and U15 ridersall able to ride the same test each day. This was fort u n a t eas several judges were unable to come at the last minute. Many thanks to Kriss Wood for filling in at the last moment(literally). She didn’t know it until she arrived at theground and then had to combine her judging duties withfeeding her brand new baby (goat). Thanks also to Pe t e rSaville for taking over the Chief Gear Check duties whenMarg Pestell became ill just a few days before the event.

Altogether these Championships received high praisefrom the competitors. The people were very friendly andhospitable and the team of workers from the Zonecombined well to make the whole weekend a success. It

2006 State Dressage Championship21st and 22nd January 2006, Bingara Showground, Zone 8

was nice to see many former active members who do nothave riders in Pony Club now coming back to assist. This is food for Pony Club as these people have a wealthof knowledge and experience to impart.

Thanks must go to the judges for their effor ts. It can’t bevery pleasant sitting in the heat for two days. Mostjudges on this occasion opted for the horse trailers whichwere provided by the Zone and they, together with all theother officials, were well looked after with refreshments. It was unusual to see that all the gear checkers were men.I can’t remember seeing this before. The gear at theseChampionships was of a very high standard.

My thanks to the members of the Advisory Committeewho attended, to Doug Denby and his team who had thescores out promptly. The decision was made to hold thepresentation in the shade in the grandstand because ofthe heat and I believe this was popular with competitorsand parents alike.

To view further images from the Championship go towww.stillpictures.com.au or contact Michelle Paul on 02 63651141. Still Pictures can provide onsite digitalprinting and coffee machine at your next event.
