Sandra’s Message A message from the Executive Director

2

For most of us working in hospice palliative care,

December is a month of contrast. Like the contrast of

the brightly coloured Christmas lights with the shortening

hours of daylight, we see the contrast between people

who are surrounded by family and those who are alone. For some fami-

lies, this one last opportunity to celebrate together is rich and welcome;

while for others it is bittersweet as they acknowledge that this might well

be a last Christmas together. Still more are experiencing a first holiday

alone.

The holiday can be a reminder of past losses; both personal and profes-

sional. Often we refer clients to blue Christmas events which are opportu-

nities to reflect on loss and take a “time out” from the celebrations and

acknowledge their own grief. But many palliative care workers also

remember friends, family members and clients who died at this time of

year. I encourage each of you to take a moment to reflect on your loss

and, as you refer clients to programs that will be helpful to them, remem-

ber that these celebrations also have room for you. As caregivers, it is im-

perative that you care for yourself so that you can continue to provide care

to others.

As we close out 2014 I would like to thank those of you who have helped

families throughout North Simcoe Muskoka this year and wish each of you

the very best for 2015.
