Words from the President Cindy Gordon
As I write this I am coming close to the end of my 4th (not consecutive) term as President of CHHA-‐Ed. I thank all of my directors, past and present, that I have been so honoured to have worked with this last term. I am grateful for your inspiration, words of advice and encouragement while carrying on the duties. I also thank you, the members, for allowing me to represent you at the many meetings that have taken place over the last 3 years. Trust me when I say that there have been at least 50 different meetings or information fairs over my term where I have been your voice. I learnt so much and I do think that CHHA-‐Ed now has a stronger presence in our community! I am grateful that during my term we were able to be the host city for our National Conference and that we can say that we pulled it off very successfully!! This conference has stirred up some new enthusiasm for change and for conferences and I look forward to our “Mini One Day Conference,” HELP IS HEAR, May 3rd.
As we get ready to welcome the new board at our AGM, Feb, 3rd, please consider your role in our organization. We are on a roll of change here… A new look and feel to CHHA-‐Ed! 2014 is going to be an exciting year full of surprises, lectures and change! How can you get involved? How can you help make change happen? There is no better time than now!!
I hope to see you all Feb. 3 at the Glenrose and look forward to ‘letting your voice be heard!’
Committee Reports
Hearing Aid Assistance Fund (HAAF)Susanne Martin – Committee Chair
Last year we had a busy year picking up, cleaning, sorting and counting bottles and cans. We usually do a pick up from somewhere at least twice per month. We've been lucky that some of our donors clean them for us, and some of our donors, turn in the bottles and give us the cash donation. Both scenarios make our job easier, but whatever we get is appreciated. In 2013 we collected $970.65 in bottle donations alone; not quite enough for a full subsidy award. Nonetheless, our other strategies for fundraising help us along the way. For example, some of our members have arrangements with their employer for regular contributions and others have a "matching donations" option with their employer. In addition we have the penny/coin collection and the annual Roy Financial Mayor's Walk in St Albert. With the various efforts and people's generosity we have been able to provide subsidy for two applicants in 2013 with the full amount requested in each case. We did receive other applications; however, either the application was incomplete, or the individuals did not meet the criteria of the program. With incomplete applications, we like to encourage the person to follow up with completion. For those who do not meet our criteria, but still need and cannot afford hearing aids, we offer options for gently used hearing aids that have been donated from various sources. Unfortunately, one of our major corporate bottle donors has withdrawn their support look at other’s who need support. With this in mind, we are looking to our members to please keep your eyes and ears open for other corporate donors that we can approach. Thanks to all who participate. We look forward to 2014 and hope for continued success.
