HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! A YEAR OF HIGHLIGHTS and RESILIENCE As this is the final newsletter for the year it is important to try to put the year into perspective. I am sure I speak on behalf of many staff, students and parents/carers when I state that it has been a highly successful one. Everyone will have their own highlights. It might have been performing at Laycock St Theatre, starting kindergarten, going on an excursion, attending the school Trivia Night or even going paddle-boarding. Whatever the memories I am sure they are positive ones. As I have noted in my P&C Report the only real negative was the fire that caused the two classrooms in C Block to be rebuilt. It really tested the staff and student’s resilience but we are ready to move forward with two newly refurbished classrooms to start 2013. At tonight’s P&C meeting my report contains a summary of as many of the school events that I could recall. I have reprinted the page in this edition of the school newsletter and I am sure once you have read it you too will be amazed at what a small school such as Chertsey can achieve. We are very fortunate to have excellent resources, an incredibly caring and highly skilled staff, parents who support and work in partnership with the school and students who respond positively to the opportunities that are offered to them.

2013 STAFFING For 2013, staffing in our mainstream will drop to eight classes due to a slight drop in enrolments, however due to Mrs Palmer, remaining on leave there will be no loss of a permanent teacher. With Miss Sewell being trained as our Reading Recovery teacher, there is currently not a position for Mrs Heath who has been working in a temporary role since her retirement at the end of 2007. I have highly valued the roles Mrs Heath has assumed over the past 5 years. She is an expert teacher of Literacy and we have been fortunate to have her in the Reading Recovery teacher role over the past two years. Additionally, she takes on many other roles to support the school. The Hearing classes has seen an increase in enrolments and pleasingly will maintain sufficient enrolments for two classes for next year and hopefully beyond. At this point in time, we will continue with Mrs Fantoni (full time); and Miss Jankovic and Mrs Vaughan ( part time) as the teachers for the junior and senior classes respectively. The recent Chertsey Schools as Community Centres (SaCC) 18th Anniversary Celebration was well attended by community members and government and non-government agencies and I believe was a great way to acknowledge the outstanding work Nada has done and continues to do for our school and the families in Springfield. The day was organised by a committee from school, led by Mrs Auinger and I appreciate their hard work! As from the start of 2013 Nada’s Facilitator role and the SaCC will move to Wyoming Public School. I am hopeful with the success of grant applications we will continue to have Nada involved with our school community next year and beyond in some capacity. I believe it has been timely to acknowledge her outstanding work with our school community, staff and students. As this was the final year of the cycle of funding for Priority Schools Funding, I would like to pay tribute to the great work of our Parent Project Officers, initially, Cathy Moore and more recently Lisa Seaman. They have facilitated programs such as 100 Readers, Multiplication Masters and Homework Clubs as well as assisting at HEADSTART. I thank both Cathy and Lisa who have contributed much to our school over the past 4 years. I am hoping for Lisa, if available, to continue to coordinate the 100 Reader’s Club and assist at HEADSTART. SURVEYS Currently our School Improvement and Evaluation Team is in the process of evaluating our school surveys which focused on Mathematics and School Satisfaction. A number of our parents have asked for some workshops around the teaching of Mathematics. I also would like to see some workshops based around the new English Syllabus in 2013. THANK YOU P&C From a P&C perspective, the school has already benefited from this year’s highly successful Trivia Night with the additions to our iPad library and a new mobile storage/sync & charge unit. The completion of the senior outdoor recreation area with a P&C funded seating and shade shelter has been very well utilised by our senior classes. And in 2013 we are hoping for another successful fete as the major fundraising event. My sincere thanks to the Fundraising Committee who continue to do an outstanding job. We can all be very proud of Chertsey Primary School. It looks great due to the continued efforts of the EARTH Committee, the highlight being the growth (literally) of the Community Garden in collaboration with the student GECKO Club. Also, we have just confirmed the booking of two French Markets for 2013, the first being on Saturday, March 16 (between 9am-3pm). These are a high prestige market and the organiser is prepared to allow the school the proceeds of the gate-takings. I will be asking for volunteers to be rostered to ensure we can collect these funds which I hope to put towards student support in the form of additional support personnel. I thank the P&C for supporting the ‘Back to School’ working bee on Saturday, January 19, 2013 (7.30-10.00am) and would welcome all Chertsey parents to attend, if only for a short while.

SAFER PEDESTRIAN ENTRY FROM WILLOW ROAD In Term 1 next year, the school will self-manage a project for a path from Willow Rd to the ‘Cottage’. This will comply with disability standards and be a safer way for pedestrians, parents with prams and people in wheelchairs to enter the school. Thank you to Mrs Denning for applying for the grant on behalf of the school. PRESENTATION DAYS Congratulations to all award recipients at last week’s KLA Presentation Assembly. In particular, I would like to acknowledge our Year 5 students Tully, Ryan, Hope, Sarah, Elise and Heath who demonstrated their ability to lead such an important assembly. Well done! I would also like to thank Miss Sewell for her outstanding organisation in coordinating this Presentation Assembly and also thank her for her hardwork as a relieving Assistant Principal throughout the year. COMING EVENTS As the year winds down there are still many activities and events at Chertsey prior to school concluding on Wednesday, 19th December. They include: the Year 6 Farewell on Monday evening; P&C meeting on Tuesday; Movie Day on Wednesday; the Multiplication Masters/ Homework Club Lunch Tuesday 11th December at 1.10 in the Library; Carols on the Bus and Community Carols on Thursday; Presentation Days and Student Reports home on Friday; and the Year 6 Graduation Assembly on Wednesday week. 2013 SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT DATES Please note that the school year for Years 1 to 6 students commences on Wednesday 30th January whilst Kindergarten students commence on 4th February.

YEAR 6 GRADUATION ASSEMBLY (Repeat) This will be held in the school hall on Wednesday 19th December. Our Year 6 students will receive their Graduation Certificates and a special slideshow will be presented. Parents are invited to attend. The assembly will begin at 2pm and will conclude with the traditional whole school farewell tunnel ‘send-off’. URGENT INFORMATION SOUGHT (Repeat) To assist with future school planning and staffing, could you please advise the office (PH: 43253963) indicating if there is a possibility of your child not attending Chertsey Primary School in 2013.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas vacation. I look forward to seeing all returning families in 2013 and wish those moving on to secondary school every success! John Anderson

Classy Article 3/4W 3/4W has been practicing interesting story beginnings on the theme of space. Here are some of them. “Larnie, come with me to the space ship and we can fly to the Alien Zoo. It will be fun. (Emma H) Many years ago a chicken spaceship came down from space and land in her coop. She got zapped by the aliens and the aliens had a little talk with chicken and put her in the space ship. (Justin) As I ran through the space station, I felt a wave of fear when a slimy tentacle reached my shoulder. A week earlier, I was coming home from school and when I went to play with my dog, I saw it, a huge space ship sitting right in the middle of the backyard. (Elora) The car left and zoomed into space. It fell into a strange hole and landed on a mysterious island. ”Uh, oh. What a gi-gi-normous spider. Uh, oh go faster, go faster! (Dakota) The horse raced through the doors of Space Dream Kingdom as time was ticking, the queen was about to give birth to a baby girl that is going to be called Alienette. (Emma S) Lights, camera, action. “Everyone listen carefully. The sun is coming towards us and Earth will explode.” “OMG! We’re going to die,” said a little girl. “Is the news right?” “Yes,” said her mum. (Amy) Bang!!!... the duck was an alien. Next all you can see is a big duck with a hairy stick. The duck said to Dr Barnacles that he was sick. (Kaitlyn) Bang! I heard as I was getting out of bed. I went to see what it was but nothing was there except a giant hole in the ground. “I wonder what…” I said to myself. But then I knew it was an alien spaceship because I saw an alien trying to pull his spaceship out of my yard. (Kyah) One day there was a little boy. He was asleep until a big bang happened, so he looked out the window and he went inside the space ship. (Jayden) “Come on Dr Bob,” said Dr Jim. “We better get in the space ship.” Once they were in, Dr Jim was grabbed by eight tentacles. Dr Bob went straight to get a milkshake from James the milkshake machine, which was really their boss. It was not really milk it was their mission instructions. As he drank it, the words went straight into his brain. (Cooper) Harlow and Peachy were having breakfast in the living room. “Peachy!” shouted Harlow. “Keep your mouth closed while you’re eating!” “S-s-s spaceship!” shouted peachy. They ran out to see. (Niamh) Greg and Chang looked at the Lunar eclipse. “Wait a minute. That’s not a lunar eclipse. Sorgon is shrinking the sun. It’s getting smaller and smaller by the second. Quick, to the lab.” (Ben)

2013 PREFECT ELECTIONS The Prefects for 2013 will be announced at this week’s Presentation Assembly on Friday 14th December (1:00pm-3:00pm). Miss Wiseman (Prefect Co-ordinator) CAROLS ON THE BUS (This Thursday) This Thursday 13th December, year one students in K1H and 1S, as well as thirty students from 5/6W and the choir have been invited to perform around Springfield as part of our annual ‘Carols on the Bus’ excursion. These students will receive further information regarding this in the near future (including a permission note and details about the stops). Participating students will meet Miss Sammut, Miss Wiseman and other staff outside the school office at 5:45pm and we will depart Chertsey at 6:00pm. We will then travel around Springfield, making several stops to sing Christmas carols. We anticipate arriving back at school by 7:15pm. All students are then invited to stay at Chertsey and participate in the evening’s festivities including more carolling, a BBQ and a visit from Santa. We look forward to seeing you all as we spread the joy of Christmas! Miss Wiseman & Miss Sammut REVERSE SANTA (This Thursday) Our school will again be holding Reverse Santa for children less fortunate than those at Chertsey. Students are asked to bring in a gift on Thursday 13th December, Santa will collect the gifts and place items under the Christmas tree in the library. The gifts do not need to be wrapped but if your gift is wrapped please indicate boy or girl and child’s age. As the Community Chest is no longer a charitable organization on the Coast all gifts will be distributed to a local family organization. Thank you in anticipation of your support. Your generosity for our previous Reverse Santa has been very much appreciated.

Dear Parents/Carers LOST PROPERTY Please note that there are a large number of lost property items eg. jumpers, lunch boxes etc. in the school office. At the end of the term any unclaimed clothing will be donated to the school’s clothing pool and all other items discarded.
