    Preface

Welcome to PowerCenter Standard and Advanced Edit ion. With these PowerCenter editions,Informatica extends the definition of the base enterprise data integration platform to include

additional, key capabilities such as metadata analysis (Metadata Manager), data-readyreporting (Data Analyzer), server grid, and team-based development to enable comprehensiveend to end data integration solutions.

The PowerCenter repository coordinates and drives a variety of core functions, includingextracting, transforming, loading, and managing data. The Integration Service can extractlarge volumes of data from multiple platforms, handle complex transformations on the data, and support high-speed loads. PowerCenter can simplify and accelerate the process ofbuilding a comprehensive data warehouse from disparate data sources.

Data Analyzer makes accessing, analyzing, and sharing enterprise data simple and easilyavailable to decision makers. Data Analyzer enables you to gain insight into your businessprocesses and develop business intelligence.

Metadata Manager is an enterprise information asset management and analysis solution. Itenables you to analyze and manage metadata from any system. It also enables you to gaininsight into your metadata for impact and content analysis and allows you to view data andinformation flow across systems.

    Overview

The PowerCenter installer can install PowerCenter Standard Edition or PowerCenterAdvanced Edition. PowerCenter Standard Edition includes PowerCenter and Data Analyzer

for PowerCenter Repository Reports. PowerCenter Advanced Edition includes StandardEdition plus Metadata Manager. The installation process configures the products andestablishes connections between serv ices, servers, clients, and repositories.

You can install the complete set of PowerCenter components or select a custom insta llation toinstall each component separately. The PowerCenter components you can install depend onyour license. You can install PowerCenter in graphical mode or console mode.

If you perform a complete installation, you can install PowerCenter, PowerCenter Repository

Reports, Data Analyzer, and Metadata Manager on one machine. If you perform a custominstallation, you can select the component you want to install. You can install eachcomponent on the same machine or on different machines.

Depending on your license, you can install the following components:

PowerCenter Services.Includes the Service Manager and application services that run in adomain. The PowerCenter installer installs and configures PowerCenter Services. You cancreate a new domain or join an existing domain. The installer can create the PowerCenter

repository or connect to an existing PowerCenter repository. For more information, seePowerCenter Services on page 7.

Data Analyzer. Includes Data Analyzer and JBoss Application Server. The installer installsData Analyzer on JBoss Application Server, BEA WebLogic Server, or IBM WebSphere

Application Server. The insta ller can create the Data Analyzer repository or connect to anexisting repository. For more information, see Data Analyzer on page 9.

Metadata Manager.Includes Metadata Manager and JBoss Applicat ion Server. The

installer installs Metadata Manager on JBoss Application Server , BEA WebLogic Server, orIBM WebSphere Application Server. The installer can create the Metadata Managerrepository or connect to an existing repository. The installer creates the PowerCenterrepository for Metadata Manager. For more information, see Metadata Manager onpage 10.

PowerCenter Client.Includes client tools for PowerCenter and Metadata Manager. Formore information, see PowerCenter Client on page 12.

    PowerCenter Services 7

PowerCenter Services consists of a Service Manager and application services that run in adomain. A domain is a collection of nodes and services that you can group in folders based on

administration ownership. You create a domain when you first install PowerCenter Services. You can run the installat ionon other machines to add the machines to the domain as nodes. You use the PowerCenter

Adminis tration Console to manage the domain after you insta ll PowerCenter Services.

When you run the installer, you insta ll Informatica Services. Informatica Services runs as aservice on Windows and as a daemon on UNIX. When you start Informatica Services,Informatica Services starts the Service Manager, which manages all domain operations.

For more information about PowerCenter domains, nodes, services, and the AdministrationConsole, see Understanding Domains in the PowerCenterAdministrator Guide.

For more information about using the installer to create a domain or add a node to a domain, see Single or Multiple Machine Installation on page 17.

    Metadata Manager

  • 8/12/2019 PC 811 InstallationGuide

    36/603

10 Chapter 1 : PowerCenter Ins ta llat ion Components

Metadata Manager uses an application server to manage processes. You can run MetadataManager on one of the following application servers:

JBoss Application Server BEA WebLogic Server

    IBM WebSphere Application Server

If you run Metadata Manager on JBoss Application Server, you can install JBoss ApplicationServer with Metadata Manager or use an existing instance of JBoss Application Server.Informatica includes JBoss Application Server version 4.0.3 in the PowerCenter installer.

If you run Metadata Manager on BEA WebLogic Server or IBM WebSphere ApplicationServer, you must obtain and install the application server before you install PowerCenterStandard Edition. The installer does not install BEA WebLogic Server or IBM WebSphere

    Application Server.

For more information about application server prerequisites for Metadata Manager, seeApplication Servers on page 40.

Metadata Manager XConnects are a set of PowerCenter workflows that Metadata Manager

uses to extract metadata from sources and load into the Metadata Manager repository. Theworkflows are stored in the PowerCenter repository. You use the Metadata ManagerConfiguration Console to run the XConnects to load metadata to the Metadata Managerrepository. Metadata Manager XConnects are installed when you install Metadata Manager.

When you install Metadata Manager, the PowerCenter installer can create a PowerCenterrepository or connect to an existing PowerCenter repository to store the XConnect workflows. It creates a Metadata Manager folder in the PowerCenter repository to store the XConnect

workflows that you run from the Metadata Manager Configuration Console.

If you perform a complete installation of PowerCenter Advanced Edition, the installer usesthe PowerCenter repository as the PowerCenter repository for Metadata Manager. You mustcreate a separate database and user account for another PowerCenter repository and create aRepository Service when you configure the application services.

Note: The PowerCenter repository that stores the Metadata Manager XConnects is called theIntegration repository in the Metadata Manager documentation.
