PCPCNEWSLETTER APRIL

Jesus Is Alive! Celebrate Easter! by David C. Mauldin

cont’d on pg. 6

Jesus Christ is alive! This is our hope and the strong foundation of our faith. On Easter Sunday we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus. But Easter is not just a day. It is a season that stretches seven weeks from Easter to Pentecost. I invite you to join our celebration. Easter ranks first among holidays because nothing makes a greater difference than the Resurrection. To put it bluntly, if God did not raise Jesus from the dead, Christianity is bankrupt, worthless, a waste of time. But, if God did raise Jesus from the dead, then…Jesus is Lord, death is not the end, and you can find new life in Jesus alone. Over the first three Sundays of Easter, I will be preaching on the Resurrection. On Easter itself, I will preach about what the Resurrection means. The next Sunday is Thomas Sunday. (Yes, I made that up. The power to make up holidays is one of the most fun parts of my job.) You may recall the disciple Thomas doubted the Resurrection until he saw the risen Jesus. On Thomas Sunday, the sermon is about evidence for the Resurrection and why you should believe it really happened. The following Sunday doesn’t have a special name, but I will preach about Resurrection hope and eternal life. Here is a little golden nugget I won’t be able to fit into my sermon on Thomas Sunday: Beginning in the 19th century, skeptics began to claim that belief in Jesus’ Resurrection was a late addition to Christianity. They argued that Jesus’ first disciples never believed or preached the Resurrection. For some unfathomable reason, when Jesus was crucified, these disciples decided

to keep following him and calling him the Messiah. Later on, when Christianity spread beyond Judaism to the larger Greek culture of the Roman Empire, some nut invented the idea of the Resurrection. That’s what the skeptics said, basically. Never mind that Greek thought rejected the concept of Resurrection while many Jews believed in it. Anyway, the argument was that the Resurrection accounts in the gospels were invented later on. But there is a problem with that theory. OK, there are lots of problems with it, and no serious scholar argues this today. One vital bit of evidence comes from Mark 16:2, which in the ESV reads, “And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.” That’s a fine English translation, but Mark did not actually write “the first day of the week.” In the original Greek, he wrote, “the one of the Sabbath.” That sounds weird in English. It also sounds weird in Greek. So why did Mark write that? He could have written “the first day of the week” in normal, everyday Greek. Why such an odd phrase? It is not natural Greek, but it is idiomatic Aramaic! Aramaic was the language spoken by Jews in Palestine. It is the language of Jesus and his first disciples. Mark used this Aramaic expression because it had been handed down to him in the oral tradition. In other words, Mark’s account of the Resurrection goes back a long way, back to the time of Jesus’ first followers. It is far too early to be a later invention.

Our angel this month wears many hats. Here at PCPC, the hat she has been wearing magnificently for so long that it’s almost threadbare is that of lead usher for the 11:00 service. The essence of all that she does can besummed up in one word: “conscientious.” She thinks of what needs to be done beforehand, makes sure everything runs smoothly during service, and wraps it up efficiently afterward. She has the same conscientiousness at Christmastime when she makes sure all the children of Gertrude Walden Child Care Center receive their gifts from our Giving Trees mission and that everyone involved is happy. She has such a heart for the church, anticipating things that can be done in the future which will be a

benefit to all who enter here. Whenever someone asks who is in charge, and our angel’s name is mentioned, they respond with, “Oh, good, then I don’t have to worry about a thing.” Our angel this month is LynnAnn White, a woman very dear to our church and a great model of Christ’s love.

Garden Gift On Sunday, March 11, Pastor David, a group of Palm City Presbyterian deacons, and friends gathered in the columbarium’s garden to dedicate the new garden planted in memory of Thomas E. Rosendahl. “Tom was such an inspiration to us during the time he served as a deacon while battling his illness. His close walk with our Lord and continual witness were extraordinary qualities that remain a legacy for us,” noted Patti Miller.Pastor David shared words surrounding the passage from Matthew 25:21 — “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” Donations from the Deacon Class of 2017 funded the gift for the garden beautification in remembrance of Tom. Tom’s wife, Pat, and his daughter, Krista, placed the plaque for its dedication. Thanks to all.

Preschool This month we have the awesome privilege of telling preschoolers that Jesus is God’s Son, He is alive, and He wants to be their friend forever. It truly is BIG NEWS! For many of the preschoolers who will be celebrating Easter with us, this will not only be big news, it will be NEW news as well! We get to tell the amazing story of Easter to so many for the very first time. Imagine preschoolers running around telling the BIG NEWS that Jesus is alive—now THAT would be an awesome Easter. After Easter, we get to share with our preschoolers how the BIG NEWS that Jesus is alive spread throughout the land. We will hear the stories of how the early church began, how men traveled far to tell the news, and how people were changed because of the big news. Finally, we will remind preschoolers (and ourselves) that telling others the BIG NEWS truly is the best gift of all.

Week 1: The Easter Story: Jesus is Alive! (Matthew 26:20-30; 27:1-2; 28:1-7) Week 2: Early Church (Acts 2:42-47) Week 3: Saul to Paul (Acts 9:1-20; 13:9) Week 4: Paul and Silas (Acts 16:16-34) Week 5: Peter and John (Acts 3:1-11, 16)

MEMORY VERSE: “GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS.” MATTHEW 28:19 KEY QUESTION: WHO CAN TELL OTHERS ABOUT JESUS?BOTTOM LINE: I CAN TELL OTHERS ABOUT JESUS.

I am excited to announce that we have another fun-filled month in our children’s ministry! This month is even more exciting because we get to celebrate the story of Jesus rising from the dead and saving us! We get to celebrate Easter! In each of our areas, I have outlined what our sweet little ones will be learning. Each week our children are presented with an engaging Bible story, praise and worship, and story-related activities and scripture. It is a joy to be part of planting the seeds of faith into the heart of our children!

ElementaryIn our elementary worship service we will be learning about God’s patience. Why? Well, because God is in control and He knows how the story ends. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we know how the story ends, too. Because of Jesus, WE CAN WAIT. We can trust that God is in control. We can have hope that things will work out in the end. And we can be patient because we know all that God has done. We will be learning about God’s patience by learning from the following Bible stories: Week 1: The Easter Story: Jesus is Alive! (Matthew 26:20-30; 27:1-2; 28:1-7) Week 2: Hannah Prays for a Baby (1 Samuel 1:6–2:1) Week 3: A Patience Proverb (Proverbs 14:29) Week 4: Golden Calf (Exodus 32:1-35) Week 5: Esau’s Impatience (Genesis 25:24–34) MEMORY VERSE: “WAIT FOR THE LORD. BE STRONG AND DON’T LOSE HOPE. WAIT FOR THE LORD!” PSALM 27:14, NIRVBOTTOM LINE: PATIENCE: WAITNG UNTIL LATER FOR WHAT YOU WANT NOW.

Beginning The Case for Christ: A Journalist’s Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus by Lee Strobel (Zondervan, 1998) ISBN 0310209307 Highly recommended and a pleasure to read. Strobel, an adult convert from atheism, interviews experts about Jesus and the resurrection.

Fun, huh? There is a mountain of evidence for the Resurrection. If you are a believer, you should be familiar with it—at least the basics. If you are not, you owe it to yourself to investigate the evidence and make an informed decision about Jesus. “But where should I start?” you ask. Below I’ve listed some books I highly recommend. I have sorted them by how challenging they are. The beginning level books are easy to read. Anyone can profit from them. The intermediate books are accessible to any thoughtful, educated person. Heavy hitters will want to tackle something from the advanced list.

Easter is here! Christ is alive! Come celebrate our Living Savior!

More Than a Carpenter by Josh McDowell and Sean McDowell (Tyndale House, 2009) ISBN 9781414326276 Like The Case for Christ, it covers more topics than just the Resurrection. Who did Jesus claim to be? How can we know? How can we be certain he rose from the dead?

Intermediate Did the Resurrection Happen? A Conversation with Gary Habermas and Antony Flew by Gary R. Habermas and Antony Flew; edited by David J. Baggett (InterVarsity Press) ISBN 9780830837182 This book recounts a debate between Flew, who until 2004 was an atheist, and Habermas, a Christian. The editor provides additional helpful information.

The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus by Gary R. Habermas and Michael R. Licona (Kregel, 2004) ISBN 082542788 A thorough examination of the evidence. Alternative theories are explored at length. Includes an interactive game CD.

??The Resurrection of Jesus: A New Historiographical Approach by Michael R. Licona (IVP Academic, 2010) ISBN 9780830827190 Thorough and well-written, but with over 700 pages; not for the faint of mind.

Teaching SeriesIt’s so easy to get lulled into a sleepy faith, seeing our relationship with God as just what we do on Sundays or at youth group. We’re tempted to live for ourselves, pursuing the fleeting pleasures of sin instead of pursuing a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ. But the time

for sleeping is over – no more snooze button, no more pulling the covers over your head. It’s time to wake up! In our new series that begins the second week of April, we will present a call to our students to AWAKEN their faith and reach their world (their friends, neighbors, and classmates) with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Confirmation Class Mission ProjectHow sweet it is!

Selecting a mission project seemed daunting at the start of the classes, but the 2018 Confirmation Class came up with a SWEET one! After hearing some attendees of the 11 a.m. worship service reminisce about how they used to enjoy lemonade and cookies after church, the seed for the project’s idea was planted! On Sunday, March 18th, three members of the Confirmation Class hosted the first Lemonade & Cookies social, and this will continue most Sundays until confirmation on May 19th. The students will take turns hosting each week, and they would love for you to stop by their table. If you typically dash out the side door straight to the parking lot, you might miss them! So take a few minutes next Sunday to enjoy refreshments in our courtyard and visit with friends! Thank you to those who have already visited and encouraged these wonderful students on their journey.

A Message from Grandmothers and Others Grandmothers and Others would like to say THANK YOU to all of those that have helped us with our mission to make clothing for the 4Cs (Caring Children Clothing Children) program. Last year, 4Cs provided clothing to over 5,000 children in Martin County; our group donated almost 400 complete outfits to the program. Store volunteers told me that when our outfits are hanging on the racks at their store, people immediately migrate to them and snatch them up for their children. Your generous donations of fabric, notions, and money make it all possible as we are entirely dependent on those contributions to be able to make our clothing. Donations of any type are appreciated. If you are giving money, you can make your check out to PCPC, but please designate it for Grandmothers and Others so it will be channeled to our program specifically. If you or a neighbor have fabrics, notions, or old sewing machines you would like to donate, please contact me. I will pick them up if you can't leave them at the church. If

you do drop them off at PCPC, please include your name and address with the donation so I can acknowledge it. If you can provide fabric, we are currently in need of plain pastel shades of no-iron cotton fabric. We also need polyester stuffing to use for making small pillows. We make the pillows from scraps of leftover fabric, and they do not count against the family’s maximum allotment of clothes. I've heard that the children are very excited when they receive one of the special pillows or toys. We are always seeking others to join us who can sew, but even if you don’t sew, we can still use your help in other areas. We meet at 9:30 a.m. the 3rd Thursday of the month, October through May. Please stop by and check out our new “closet” and workroom on the 2nd floor in Langill Hall. If you have any questions about the program at all, I’d be happy to talk with you. You can contact me through the church office at772-286-9958.

VBS Drama CampART IS IN is returning to PCPC to put on another fabulous VBS Drama Camp with our children this June! This year's production is called "2 Tickets To Hollywood." Camp participants will put on a free performance for the public on Friday, June 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Huizenga Family Life Center. What is “2 Tickets To Hollywood” about? It’s 1938, and sisters Mary Jane and Molly Mortimer leave their hometown in Mapleton, Illinois for a trip to Hollywood. But when a chance encounter with famed Hollywood actor James Warren leads to a chance for a role in a movie, the girls believe they’ve gotten a lucky break. Before long, however, the studio begins pressuring them to change their names, to tell a made-up story about their background, and to abandon their hometown roots. Uncomfortable, the sisters learn that trusting God to direct their path is the true route to happiness and that even the glitter of Hollywood can’t compete with Jesus.Cost: $125.00 for the week (All participants receive a T-shirt. Snacks are included; please bring lunch.) Space is limited; register as soon as possible.Registration forms are available in the church office, Narthex, and Huizenga Family Life Center lobby.Online registration: http://www.palmcitypres.org/2018-drama-camp-sign-up/To pay online, click the ticket link http://www.palmcitypres.org/giving/which will bring you to the "Giving" section of our website. We have a lot of hurting people who depend on this ministry team to keep them covered in prayer. Praying for others is a labor of love, and we have been blessed to have the desire to be a part of this team of prayer-givers. In the Lord’s power, we stand together against the devil’s spiritual warfare and offer up prayers to God for those in need.

We each pray over the requests written on the cards that are placed in the prayer box in the narthex. To prepare ourselves, we surrender to the Lord and let our prayers be a priority. We meditate on the words of the Holy Bible, asking God to give us wisdom and understanding as we read and study. We believe that God can and will answer prayers, that nothing is impossible with the Lord, and that He can work miracles in the lives of those for whom we pray.

Currently, our ministry team members are Sarah and Bill Bangley, Florine Blackshear, LaBarbara Chenault, Polly Forestier, and Phyl Sullivan.

If you have been inspired by God to be a Prayer Warrior and have one day a week to devote to this ministry, please contact the office for direction and assignment.

Check it out for yourself! You’ve heard the buzz about Community Bible Study over the last 5 years – now it’s time for you to learn more! Join us at Invite Night Thursday, April 19th, at 6:30 PM in Langill Hall for a presentation on CBS and how you can join. CBS is free from now until the end of the year as we start our registration for next year! We love seeing what happens in people’s lives when they discover God through the study of His Word. We have Bible studies for all age groups and stages of life, from classes for infants and teens to classes for adults who are single or married. Together we explore the Bible and what it tells us about the God who has woven a story through history and is present with us now. The first CBS class began in the fall of 1975 at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland and is now in over 100 countries!

Community Bible studies meet once a week and include the following 5 elements:

Individual Study – Transformation happens as individuals engage with God in His Word. Stimulating home study questions help participants apply the timeless truths of the Bible to their daily lives.

Encouraging Discussion – Participants gain additional insights and grow in their confidence with God’s Word as they discuss the passage in a safe, small group setting.

Effective Teaching – Trained teachers highlight and illustrate the central idea of the Bible passage and its prac-tical application in each person’s life.

Insightful Commentary – Respected theologians help participants understand the historicalcontext of the passage and how it relates to the rest of Scripture.

Caring Community – Caring leaders pray for and encourage participants to grow spiritually and connect with each other in a loving and supportive community.

To hear what people like Joni Eareckson Tada and Nick Vujicic say about CBS, visit: https://www.communitybi-blestudy.org/why-we-do-it/

Pastor David will begin the new year with a short series on Jesus’ favorite book. In the gospels, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy more than any other book. “Jesus frees us from the Law, but the Law helps us follow Jesus,” Pastor David explains. “The Law guides and guards us as we live into the freedom Christ gives us.”
