LOST CIRCULATION:

The PBL Multi-Activation Bypass System is an effective tool to combat lost circulationproblems. With the tool run as low in the BHA as possible it can be opened (activated) by simply dropping a ball. When the tool opens operators are not limitedin the size or concentration of LCM they can pump. The limitations rest with the surfaceequipment. Once circulation is regained the tool can now be closed. Simply dropa steel ball or balls to close the tool and drill ahead. If the problem is encounteredagain the PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System can be closed (de-activated)downhole as the tool can be opened and closed up to six times a bit run.

In addition to loss circulation control the PBL Multi-Activation Bypass System candeal with numerous other downhole applications including horizontal drillinghole cleaning, workovers and completions. The tool offers other apparentcost/time saving advantages and enhancements.

INCREASING FLOW RATES BEYOND CRITICAL LIMITS:

All direction Drilling tools have critical limits that operators must not exceed. Thelimits set on directional tools by manufacturers often restrict operators fromachieving preferred circulating rates for effective hole cleaning. The PBL Multi-Activation Bypass system is useful in increasing circulation rates 4 times thatof rates allowed through directional tools by manufacturers. Circulate at 4 timesthe critical limit through the PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System.

WORKOVERS & COMPLETIONS:

Circulating rate and pressure loss application, this application proved very effectivefor operators working in wells with liners on bottom. The PBL tool is utilised tobypass small working strings inside liners. With the tool positioned directly abovethe slim hole string in the liner it can be opened to bypass the friction loss associated with the slim hole working string. Increased flow rates can be as highas five times that of the rate achieved while circulating through the slim holestring. The Bypass system allows operators to rotate and reciprocate during thedisplacement operation. This will greatly help to reduce casing, erosion or washing.

HORIZONTAL ACIDISING & STIMULATION:

In multilateral horizontal wells it is necessary to find the lateral leg which requiresstimulation. For this reason it is necessary to run expensive MWD Tools. With thePBL tool run directly above the MWD tool, stimulation can be achieved with noadverse effects on the MWD tool. All acid can be pumped through the PBL Tooland the PBL Tool can be opened and closed so that the operator can regain signals from the MWD Tool.

HORIZONTAL DRILLING:

With increased activity and demand for horizontal drilling it became apparentthat there were yet more applications for the tool in this specialised area. One ofthe more interesting applications is using the tool to break circulation while running in the hole with downhole motors.

This application allows operators to break circulation through the PBL BypassSystem when running in the hole. This is an advantage when running motorswith bent housings and PDC bits. This application eliminates motor and bit rotation preventing bit wear and tear as well as casing wear. With the BHA onbottom the Bypass System can be closed to commence with drilling. This is veryeffective for TTRD operations.

These three applications for the PBL Multi-Functional Bypass System have proveneffective to operators in some of the most extreme environments worldwide.

UNDER BALANCED DRILLING

The tool can be used for this application, most commonly the tool is run in the vertical

section of the well. The tool is used so that the zone of interest is not exposed to

contaminated fluid. The tool can be opened up to allow the displacement of

weighted material in the vertical part of the well bore for safer tripping of the pipe

or for well control operations. For this application the ball catcher can be run down

the string just above the MWD or non-mag tools, this will allow free point and

back off operations to be performed as low in the hole as possible

FIXED CUTTER/BI-CENTRE BITS OR REAM WHILE DRILLING TOOL

(RWD) APPLICATIONS.

When these above mentioned tools are run in conjunction with down hole

motors some operational problems can be eliminated with the use of the PBL

Multi-Activation Bypass System. Pumping through drilling motors with the above

mentioned tools is not recommend while inside casing or tubing. In most cases it

is not recommended to turn these bits inside the casing/tubing with the drilling

motors as this can damage the bit, the casing or the tubing. The PBL Multiple

Activation Bypass System can solve this problem as follows:

Before running in the hole:

With one of the above mentioned assemblies, put the vinyl activation ball, preferably

with a dart combination into the PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System. With the

ball in place in the tool circulation can be achieved when desired with the flow

going out of the PBL Bypass System and not through the motor or MWD. When

the drill string enters the open hole the PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System

can be deactivated to allow for circulation through the MWD and motor.

SUB SEA RISER/BOP JETTING

The PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System can be utilised to jet BOP's and risers

during drilling and completion operations. The jetting application can be

performed by opening and closing the PBL Bypass System without the need for

tripping jetting tools in and out of the hole.

Jetting your sub sea BOP’s will clean shale and debris out of the cavities in the sub

sea BOP stack greatly enhancing safety. Jetting the riser will effectively clean the

riser during drilling and completion operations.

Utilising the PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System for jetting sub sea BOP's and

risers will greatly reduce rig time. By having the tool as a component of the BHA,

this jetting operation can be performed during each trip as and when required.

THRU TUBING ROTARY DRILLING:

The PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System greatly increases circulation rates forwell bore clean out during TTRD and slim hole restricted flow rate situations.

The PBL Bypass System will eliminate turning the bits inside the tubing stringwhen RIH or POOH.

Dual ported tools with increased TFA are recommended to enhance flow rates.

Tools can be manufactured to suit all required specifications.

CORING APPLICATIONS:

After core cut increase flow rates and reduce core disturbance whilst circulatingor pumping out of the hole.

Eliminate wet trips if core jammed or corebit/corebarrel packed off.

Enhance well control capabilities.

Increase limited circulating rates when running special application coring systemsplus corebarrels which utilize oil saturation data or compound enhanced sealed innerbarrel techniques.

C) ACTIVATION PROCEDURE:

Before activating the tool check and make note of pump pressure/stroke. This will

be referred to upon de-activation of the tool to confirm de-activation.

Break the drill string at the floor and drop the vinyl ball (NEVER RE-RUN PBL

ACTIVATION BALLS). The vinyl ball can be displaced at a high flow rate for 50%-

70% displacement volume. If ball/dart combination is used, displace at a high

flow rate for no more than 50% of drill string volume. The time it takes to pump

the vinyl ball down and seat and open the tool will be affected by the fluid

characteristics and volume. “Extreme care to be taken when pumping or

landing the vinyl ball into the tool”. Do not seat the activation ball at high

fluid rates or pressures as this could cause the vinyl ball to be blown through the

seat and will result in the procedure having to be repeated. If this happens, drop

the steel de-activation ball(s) to ensure the vinyl ball has blown through the seat

prior to dropping another vinyl ball.

The vinyl ball will almost always seat sooner than calculated pump strokes due to the

gravity and fluid characteristics, so be careful when pumping down the vinyl ball.

If the drill string is plugged there is an emergency Ball/Dart combination that can be

used to activate the tool. This must be dropped ‘DART’ end first. This Ball/Dart can

be used if flow rates are greatly restricted or the drill string is becoming plugged. The

weighted dart will help to get the lighter activation ball to the tool without flow.

When the vinyl activation ball hits the seat, the inner mandrel will drop to its open

position and the mud will be diverted through the side port(s). The PBL Bypass

System requires 100-150psi to activate and open the port(s).

Surface indication that the tool has opened is a pressure drop. Once the tool is

open, the pumps can be increased to desired rates.

We recommend that a constant pump rate be maintained while the tool is opened.

CIRCULATING RATE LIMITATIONS

With the PBL Activated the circulating rate limitations depends on the Ball

shearing pressure setting. The pressure drops across the port or ports acts on the

Activation Ball. This pressure drop will increase when port or ports become

restricted. Some situation that could cause port/ports to become restricted.

Debris Annuals in the directional horizontal wells the ports on the low side of

casing or open hole can become restricted causing the pressure drop to increase.

Dual Ported Tools are recommended to minimize the pressure drop on restrictions

across the port or ports. The port or ports are large on PBL Bypass System so in

most cases the Circulating Volume does not create a pressure drop even close to

the Ball shearing pressure setting on Tool. In most cases it is recommended to

maintain the pressure drop across the port or ports 1000psi below the preset ball

shearing pressure.

EXAMPLE:

Ball shearing pressure = 4000psi

Maximum operating pressure = 3000psi

D) DE-ACTIVATION PROCEDURE

Break the drill string at rig floor and drop appropriate steel deactivation ball(s)and pump at drilling rate or higher. When steel balls reach the PBL tool they willcut off flow through the ports creating a pressure increase. It is preferred, whenthe steel ball lands in the tool to increase pump rate and achieve preset ballshearing pressure as quickly as possible, this will reduce the washing effect of themud on the ball and port.

The vinyl activation ball will blow through the seat at the preset ball shearingpressure and be caught in the ball catcher sub/sleeve. (Ball Shearing Pressure canbe set to Operators preference).

The piston will then move up closing the circulating ports and causing the steelballs to drop in the ball catcher sub/sleeve. Circulation will then be through thebottom hole assembly. Pump rates i.e. strokes/pressure will be the same as beforethe PBL Bypass tool was activated.

E) RECOMMENDATIONS

Never re-run PBL Activation Balls as they become damaged through thede-activation process. After retrieving balls from the ball catcher cage, the vinylactivation ball(s) should be discarded immediately. With regards to Acidizing -only use High Temp PBL Activation balls during acidizing process.

It is imperative that when you drop a vinyl ball to activate the tool that you followit with a steel ball(s) to de-activate the tool. It is important that this sequence is carried out at all times to insure that the tool operates correctly.

We recommend that once the tool is below the rig floor, that you function test thetool at this point to ensure the tool is working before running in the hole. This will also acquaint personnel with the operation of the tool. There will be nocharge for this vinyl ball if this procedure is followed. The PBL tool must be pulledand balls removed out of the ball catcher sub before running in the hole.

F) EFFECTS OF HIGH TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES ON BALL SHEARINGAND BALLS

With continuous operation of PBL’s worldwide, our experience has shown that inhigh temperatures and high pressures the density of the vinyl balls is slightlyaffected causing ball shearing pressure to be decreased by 200-400 psi.

Standard temperature balls service temperature is 340°F (171°C)

High temperature balls, may be included upon request, which withstand 450oF (232°C).

Hot hole balls are indicated by colour coding (Dark metallic with a yellow ringaround the circumference of the ball).

H) Q.A. ON OPERATION BALLS

All operating balls are measured using a micrometer, to see if within specifications.

I) INTERNAL DRIFT

The drift is the smallest inside diameter of the tool and when the tool has beenactivated and deactivated and there are balls in the ball catcher cage the drift iseliminated. That is why we recommended running the tool as low in the BHA aspossible.

J) BALL DART COMBINATIONNote: Must be inserted dart end down

The use of the ball dart combination is recommended for the following situations.

1) If the drill string or annulus becomes plugged or packed off it will be hard toget the standard activation ball to the tool to activate (open) it. The ball/dartcombination will add density to the ball to help the vinyl activation ball get to the tool faster. With the tool activated it may be possible to break circulation through the tool and clean up the annulus. With the annulus clean the tool can be deactivated to allow the operator to continue drilling ahead. If the bit is plugged it will allow the operator to circulate.

2) In situations where high mud weights are used the ball dart combination will help to speed up the activation process.

3) In the past, PBL Bypass Systems were sent out with an emergency steel ballthe same size as the vinyl activation balls. This emergency ball was to be used ifthe drill string became plugged. It would migrate down the string to the toolthrough any mud weights even without circulation to activate the tool. Theball/dart combination will do the same, although if desired, the ball/dart combination can be blown through the tool deactivating (closing) it.

K) SURVEY BARREL RECOMMENDATIONS

The PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System is compatible with Survey Barrels. It is recommended to land theSurvey Barrel on the Ball Catcher Sleeve in the tool 6 1/4” and larger and on the Top Sub ID in the4 3/4” tools and smaller. On the larger tools if there are balls in the Ball Catcher Sleeve the SurveyBarrel will land on top of the Balls. The ID going through the Ball seat on 6 1/4” - 6 3/4” tools is1 7/8”. So between 1 3/4” and 1 3/8” Survey Barrel should be used. The 4 3/4” tools have an ID of1.520” on the Top Sub so any Survey Barrel larger than this will be compatible. It is recommendedto check the Survey Barrel in PBL Bypass Bypass tool to confirm compatibility.

With regards to Directional Surveys some modification can be made to make the PBLBypass tool compatible with mule shoe / orienting Sub Systems. To make 4 3/4” PBL toolscompatible, the orienting Sub can be run above the PBL Bypass tool. The ID of the orienting Sub Sleeve will have to be opened up so a 1.500” Ball can pass. This has proven effectivein the past. With regard to 6 1/4” - 6 3/4” PBL Bypass Tools, DSI can provide a larger mule shoeand orienting Sub Sleeve to fit in the top of the PBL Bypass tool. This will allow the 2“Vinyl Balls to pass through the orienting Sub Sleeve in the top of the PBL Bypass Tool. TheOD of the mule shoe provided by PBL is 2 3/8”.

L) DRILL STRING PLACEMENT

For drilling, it is recommended to run the PBL Multiple Activation Bypass System as low in the hole as possiblei.e. Just above non-magnetic components in directional situations and just above the Bit Sub in conventional vertical Drilling. This will allow operators to free point and back off as well as Surveyas low in the hole as possible.

M) FOR COMPLETIONS

Run the PBL Multiple Activation Bypass tool at the crossover of the tapered working string. During completions, operators are working in cased hole so free point and back off is not necessary as thelikelihood of becoming stuck in the hole is very remote.

I. INTRODUCTION

The PBL Bypass System has provided a simple and reliable solution to various drilling problems, including lost circulation. The new PBL Autolock Multiple Activation Bypass System was developed at therequest of the operators to allow for safer and timelier tripping. By locking the tool in the open posi-tion, the drill string can easily drain and fill during tripping operations. This new PBL Bypass Systemallows operators the ability to open and close the tool down hole up to 5 times to assist in dealingwith hole conditions. This new system is safe, reliable and effective.

APPLICATION DETAILS

a. Trip Dry Pipe: When the PBL Autolock tool is in the activated position by dropping the Locking Ballthe tool will lock open. This is confirmed on surface, as the “Plastic Locking Ball” will cut the TFA in half, so surface indication is clear. With the Locking Ball Seated there is 1 x 1 1/8”or 1 3/8”full opening port to drain the pipe. Pulling dry pipe with Lighter Weighted pills will be realized.

b. Fill pipe: Running in the hole with the PBL Autolock Bypass System will eliminate costly time filling the pipe. When it is desired to close the tool, drop two Steel Deactivation Balls and close the tool.

c. Equalize & If differential sticking occurs the PBL Autolock Bypass tool can be opened toReverse allow lighter fluid to be pumped down the annulus until the pipe comes free.Circulate: With the pipe coming free conventional circulation can be resumed to

displace the lighter fluid out of the hole and out of the system.

d. Equalize & Reverse Utilize the PBL Autolock tool to reverse fluids during displacement operations to Circulation for achieve maximum annular velocities to clean the well bore. Resume conventionaleffective circulation at any time as well as open and close the tool 5 times while completions in hole.

e. To Shock the Pipe: By locking the PBL Autolock tool open and dropping one Steel Deactivation Ball, the system will pressure up and shear the plastic locking Ball. This has the effect of shocking the pipe. The debris falling off of the ID of the pipe will exit out the Port in the PBL Autolock Bypass System, this will eliminate debris from contaminating the BHA. Drop the second Steel Deactivation Ball to reset tool and resume drilling.

II. LOCKING TOOL FOR HYDRAULIC RESET

For locking tool open, a Plastic Locking Ball is used. Using this procedure, will allow operators to lockthe tool open and open or close the tool down hole anytime.

Drop Vinyl Activation Ball/Dart pump 50% to 70% of pipe volume ports will open, pressure will dropindicating the tool is open. To lock the tool open, drop Plastic Locking Ball. Pump the locking Ball tothe tool @ 50% of drilling rate when the pressure decreases, the Activation Ball has opened the tool. When the pressure increases the “Locking Ball” has seated in the nozzle, the tool is now lockedopen. When the circulation stops the tool will remain locked open with the Plastic Locking Ball holding the sleeve open. To close the tool drop two Steel Deactivation Balls, the Locking Ball willshear through the nozzle and the two Steel Balls will restrict the flow out of the ports. The systemwill pressure up and the Vinyl Activation Ball will shear and the tool will close. The Steel Balls willend up in the Ball Catcher Sleeve with the activation Ball. With the ports closed drilling can resume. This procedure can be performed on below the rotary table or in the hole at any time. This procedure is also used to surface reset tool after tripping in locked open position.

III. WELL CONTROL CONSIDERATION

When the PBL Autolock Bypass tool is locked open there is communication between the annulus and the ID of the drill string. Flapper valves can be run above the PBL Autolock tool to eliminate influx through the port and into the drill string. Standard flappers can be provided that willdrift up to 2” vinyl activation balls. Modified flappers can be provided to drift 2 1/2” vinyl activationballs. If flappers are not used above the PBL Autolock tool drill crews should be briefed on stabbing value and well control procedures.

As testament to the success of our products, over the years, some of our clients have stated:

“The multi-open/close feature of the PBL sub with the ability to rotate pipe has allowed us to now effectively and cost efficiently clean up our wells. In fact I would say I had not been able to attribute anyNon Productive Time on the completion side to pipe dope or drilled solids for the last three or four wells.”Ian Frizell, rig superintendent Eider, North Cormorant and Cormorant Alpha.

“We have been using the PBL tools extensively on BP Forties operations for the past 18 months we havefound them to be a very reliable tool no matter how many times they have been cycled during drilling orworkover operations. The tool provides us with a very effective means of achieving enhanced flow rateswhen required.”Drew Liel, drilling superintendent, Noble Drilling.

“Petroleum Development Oman have been using the PBL subs with success for the last 24 months…ThePBL sub is now a standard component of the drilling BHA in Oman.”Pierre Andre, DES manager, United Engineering Services L.L.C.

“The sub has been used primarily for drilling in formations where severe lost circulation is encountered…Ithas proven to be a reliable tool meeting our performance expectations.”L. N. Westermark, manager, Drilling & Completion Services, Imperial Oil / Esso

“The main applications are: pumping LCM across loss zones, pumping acid for stuck pipe, increasing flowrates to clean the 9.5/8” above 7” liner lap with 4.3/4” OD drill string, and displacing well bore fluids duringcompletion operations. These tools are being used on a regular basis by Occidental Petroleum and various drilling operators with minimal problems. It is anticipated that these tools will continue to be usedand more frequently as the benefits are fully realised by all concerned.”Phil Woodard, senior directional drilling co-ordinator - Qatar, Sperry-Sun Drilling Services.

“Shared Service Drilling (SSD) has utilized the PBL subs with very favourable success as an integral drillingtool since December of 1996…In general terms, the savings attributable to keeping BHA in the hole whilespotting the high concentration LCM pills is near $50,000 per occurrence….SSD has been quite satisfiedwith the service provided by PBL Inc. and plan to continue to utilize the specialty subs in the foreseeablefuture.”Lames E. Smith, senior drilling engineer, Shared Service Drilling.

“No operational problems were experienced in running and/or functioning the tool when required…Basedon these initial results, the PBL Bypass System would seem to be an effective downhole tool for controlof lost circulation without affecting to any observed degree normal drilling operations.”P. Kapral, drilling supervisor, Mobil Oil Canada Limited.

“We have been using the PBL subs for all clean-up operations on the Shell Central Field over the last twoyears without a single failure.Hans de Vries, senior drilling engineer, Santa Fe Drilling Company (North Sea) Limited.

The wells encountered major lost circulation from 3000’ to TD at 5200’. The PBL sub allowed drilling withnozzles in the bit while still being able to spot large amounts of lost circulation materials. In areas wherelost circulation is expected we will continue to use the PBL tool.S. Jay Milner, P. Eng. Drilling Engineer Chieftain Development Co. Ltd

British Petroleum has been utilizing the "PBL" in our operations in Colombia for the last five years increasing our flow rates specially in small hole sections, changing mud properties making our transitionsmore effective another important application during completion phases we can increase our flow ratesconsiderably while displacing well bore fluids. We are implementing the utilization of your product in ourfuture projects, as we are also looking forward to the transition into the Dual Ported Subs, since our initialtest runs showed even more displacement capacities.Mauricio Cusgüen Hardware Drilling Engineer BP Colombia
