    SAINT MICHAELS MISSION STATEMENT

Saint Michaels Catholic Community is a group of Catholic Christians associated with the Ar

Forces under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Archdioceses for the Military Serv

served by the pastoral leadership of our priest(s), deacon(s), and parish staff. The communi

dedicated to exemplifying Christian community by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus C

through worship, service, and witness to the people of Fort Gordon and surrounding communi

Today's Gospel reading begins a long section unique to Luke's Gospel. Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem, which will end with his ministry in Jerusalem. We read that Jesus' days for being taken up were fulfilled. TheGreek word that Luke uses for taken up is the same word he uses to describe the Ascension. We also read thatesus is determined to journey to Jerusalem. For Luke, Jesus ministry begins in Galilee and then is one long jour-ey to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem he will meet his death but also enter into his glory. Only in Luke does Jesus thenpend 40 days in Jerusalem instructing his disciples. It is in Jerusalem that his disciples wait after his Ascension toe sent the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. And it is from Jerusalem, in Luke's second volume, the Acts of the Apostles, hat the Good News is spread to Rome and the ends of the earth.

Immediately Jesus is met with rejection, as a Samaritan village will not receive him because he is going to Jeru-alem. There was animosity between Samaritans who worshiped on Mount Gerazim and Jews who worshiped inerusalem. Jesus was also rejected as he began his ministry in Galilee in Chapter 4. And he will be rejected for theast time when he reaches Jerusalem. James and John want to call down fire from heaven to destroy the people inhe village, but Jesus rebukes them and moves on. There is often the temptation to use violence to achieve right.esus has come to break this temptation. He is aware that he must undergo violence himself before he can enter hislory.

The rest of today's reading is about the radical demands of discipleship. The three people who volunteer to be-ome disciples on this journey show that they do not understand the demands Jesus will make of them. Neither caref self, care for the dead, nor care of one's family (as required by the Fourth Commandment) can come before theemands of discipleship. Jesus reminds the first volunteer, who would go wherever Jesus goes, that animals in the

wild have more security than do Jesus and his followers. The second, who wants to bury a parent, is reminded thathe demands of proclaiming the Kingdom of God take precedence. And the third, who wants to say farewell to hisamily, is reminded that once you put your hand to the plow you cannot look back or the furrow will be crooked.uch a person is not ready for the Kingdom of God. Jesus seems harsh here, but he is only asking of his disciples

what he asks of himself. Jesus' unconditional commitment to God's saving work will demand of him his life. Henows this, but the disciples do not understand. Jesus does not want anyone to rush into discipleship, because theemands of discipleship require everyone considering it to be aware of the cost, make Jesus and his mission centralo his life, and then go forward without looking back.

It is in accordance with their dignity as personsthat is,ing endowed with reason and free will and therefore privi-ged to bear personal responsibilitythat all men should beonce impelled by nature and also bound by a moral obliga-n to seek the truth, especially religious truth. They are alsound to adhere to the truth, once it is known, and to order

eir whole lives in accord with the demands of truth. How-er, men cannot discharge these obligations in a manner ineping with their own nature unless they enjoy immunity

om external coercion as well as psychological freedom.herefore, the right to religious freedom has its foundation,t in the subjective disposition of the person, but in his veryture. In consequence, the right to this immunity continuesexist even in those who do not live up to their obligation ofeking the truth and adhering to it. Nor is the exercise of thisght to be impeded, provided that the just requirements ofblic order are observed.Declaration on Religious Liberty

    Dignitatis Humanae), no. 2 December 7, 1965.

    Reflection for Day Two

he Council Fathers note that it is precisely because humanings are endowed with reason and free will that theyturally seek what is true and good and also, then, have aoral obligation to search for the truth. This is especially these of seeking religious truth. Moreover, the truth they be-ve they have come to know binds them to that truth.

Even if the truth they believe is not actually true, yet, cause they believe it is true, they are bound to follow theirnscience. As long as what they believe does not infringee just rights of others, they cannot be coerced into giving upchanging what they believe. Moreover, the Council states that in order for human be-

gs to fulfill their obligation to seek the truth and live by it,ey must be free to do so. No one or no authority is to forceem to believe something to which they themselves have not

eely given their consent. Why does the Council stress the need to seek freely reli-

ous truth? Why do those who believe what is actually falsell possess religious freedom?Excerpts from The Documents of Vatican II, Walter M.Abbott, SJ, General Editor, copyright 1966 by AmericaPress, Inc. White House Down

    By Joseph McAleerCatholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- In the hands of director RoEmmerich, our nation's capital doesn't stand a chaHaving laid waste to Washington by way of an invasion in "Independence Day" and via the Mapocalypse in "2012," he returns to form in "W

House Down" (Columbia). This time, domestic teism is to blame for the swath of destruction a

    Pennsylvania Avenue.

Third time's a charm, however, as Emmerichcrafted a fast-paced thriller with heart -- but also tongue firmly planted in cheek. Based on a cscreenplay by James Vanderbilt ("The Amazing Sp-Man"), "White House Down" never takes itselfseriously, injecting humor into a survival drama

crosses "Die Hard" with "Air Force One."

John Cale (Channing Tatum) is a member osecurity detail protecting Speaker of the HouseRaphelson (Richard Jenkins). His goal is to joinSecret Service and serve the president, James Saw

    (Jamie Foxx).

John's motivation is personal; he wants to imphis young daughter, Emily (Joey King), who is

sessed with politics and runs her own blog.

John arranges an interview with agent Carol nerty (Maggie Gyllenhaal) at the White House

brings Emily along, and the child is agog with exment. Unbeknownst to her, though, Dad does no

    the job.

John and Emily decide to take the White House(this is pre-sequestration, of course). Prophetictheir guide points out a painting of the burning o

White House by British troops during the War of 1

Meanwhile, evil forces are at work inside the Caand at the White House, where a team of terrorists

gained entree disguised as workers installing a htheater for the first family.

Before you can say "House of Representatives,Capitol dome blows up and mercenaries are swarall over the executive mansion. Martin Walker (JaWoods), head of White House security, grabs the p

Of course, tourists make easy hostages. John sprinto action and escapes, but becomes separated Emily. Still, the ingenious girl manages to do herShe uses her cell phone to upload video of the attac

the Internet, blowing the terrorists' cover.

Without spoiling the plot and its many twists, fice it to say that, predictably, John winds up being

    president's only friend and protector.

Amid the mayhem, "White House Down" gelittle preachy, slipping in talk about peace in the Mdle East, the impact of war on combatants, and

political power wielded by military contractorsarms manufacturers. But these issues, important asare, take a back seat to unabashed patriotism and

portrayal of heroic sacrifice for neighbor, family,

    country.

The film contains much intense but mostly blless violence, a fleeting sexual image, and occascrude and profane language. The Catholic News vice classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion PiAssociation of America rating is PG-13 -- pastrongly cautioned. Some material may be inappr

Pastoral Visitationshere is simply no place more appropriate than the home for pastors to interactith their parishioners in a personal manner. And this holds true whether suchteraction is for the purpose of leading a person to Christ, reclaiming a lost

oul, or offering support and guidance. For this reason, our Pastor, Father Josephould like to start Pastoral Visitations to give parishioners the opportunity of

meeting and knowing him. He would like to visit parishioners homes twice aeek, so if you are interested in receiving the special visit of our Pastor, please

ontact the PLC Lola Rivera to schedule a Pastoral visitation @ (706) 791-4829,r [email protected]. Father Joseph is looking forward to visitour home, talk and pray with you and your family in earnestness and humility.

Writing Checks: When writing checks for our weekend collections, pmake sure you write the check to CTOF (Chapel Tithes and OfFund) Also remember , if you write a check $250 or above, you mafor a receipt from the chaplain assistant.
