    SAINT MICHAELS MISSION STATEMENT

Saint Michaels Catholic Community is a group of Catholic Christians associated with the Ar

Forces under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Archdioceses for the Military Serv

served by the pastoral leadership of our priest(s), deacon(s), and parish staff. The communi

dedicated to exemplifying Christian community by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus C

through worship, service, and witness to the people of Fort Gordon and surrounding communi

Before Lent began we were reading Luke's version of the Sermon on the Mount, which is known as the Sermonn the Plain. Today's Gospel passage is taken from the following chapter of Luke's Gospel. The concern of thishapter, as well as in Chapters 8 and 9, is Jesus' identity as the Messiah, one who is greater than a prophet.

Throughout the chapter Jesus has been performing miracles similar to those done by Old Testament prophets. When John the Baptist sent some of his disciples to Jesus to ask who he was, Jesus listed the miracles they hadeen him perform and then compared himself with John the Baptist to show that he was greater than John.

In today's Gospel Jesus sits down to eat a meal at the house of Simon, a Pharisee. A sinful woman approachesim, falls to her knees, wets his feet with her tears, dries them with her hair, and then anoints them with oil. A

imilar scene occurs in the other three Gospels, but in those versions the anointing takes place in Bethany, nearerusalem, before Passover. In the other three Gospels, this anointing is related to his being proclaimed king by therowds when he entered Jerusalem. It also related to his being anointed as a preparation for his burial. In Luke thenointing takes place north, in Galilee, early in his ministry.

Simon the Pharisee challenges Jesus, telling him that a prophet would surely know that a sinful person wasouching him. Jesus responds by telling a story about the true nature of forgiveness. Two men owe money. Onewes an amount that would equal 500 days' wages. The other owes 50 days' wages. Yet the moneylender forgiveshe debt of both when they ask him. Simon is forced to admit that the one who had the bigger debt canceled proba-ly loves the moneylender more.

After telling the story, Jesus turns to the woman and tells her that her sins are forgiven. In this scene we see thatesus does more than heal physical ailments, as prophets of the past had done. He also forgives sins. This leaveshe crowd to ask, Who is this who even forgives sins? This question is answered in Chapter 9 by Peter when herofesses that Jesus is the Messiah and at the Transfiguration when the voice from heaven declares, This is myhosen Son.

Today's reading ends with the first three verses of Chapter 8. At first they may seem unconnected to the scene

hat has come before. But they serve to show Jesus' ministry beginning to move from one town and village to an-ther, proclaiming the Kingdom of God, until he eventually arrives in Jerusalem. He is accompanied not just byhe Twelve but by a group of women, three of whom Luke names. It is significant that they are linked with the

Twelve, and they seem to be equally important to Jesus' ministry. It is the women who provide for the needs ofhese travelers out of their own resources. Although in Palestinian society women had a much lesser role than men,n Luke's Gospel they are shown as equals.

    Man of Steel

    By John MulderigCatholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- "Man of Steel" (Warner Br

director Zack Snyder's take on the familiar narrativSuperman. We all know the basic outlines of the tale: B

on distant Krypton, as an infant the iconic comic book

(Henry Cavill) is sent to Earth by his parents (RuCrowe and Ayelet Zurer) so that he can escape his doohome planet's imminent destruction. Landing in the Amcan heartland, he's adopted by the Kents (Kevin Co

and Diane Lane) who instill positive values and trprotect his secret.

In the version at hand, screenwriter David S. Go

script weaves back and forth in time to fill us in on tfacts even as investigative reporter -- and future love i

est -- Lois Lane (Amy Adams) is hot on the trail oadult Superman's true identity. Though she's ultimambivalent about the consequences of unmasking the m

mannered drifter -- his career as Lois' colleague still lithe future -- intergalactic events overtake her.

General Zod (Michael Shannon), an old enemy ofperman's father Jor-El, arrives from space and thre

humanity with annihilation unless Superman surrende

him. Flashbacks have already shown us Zod's fascistdencies and his failed coup against the lawful governm

of Krypton. Ironically, the sentence of exile Zod andconfederates received as punishment following their d

saved them from perishing in Krypton's apocalypse.

Zod's ultimatum brings the obvious parallels betwSuperman and Jesus to the fore, and neither Goyer

Snyder shows any reluctance to highlight them. A

ponders whether to sacrifice himself to save the hurace, Superman visits a church and seeks the advice

clergyman. During their conversation, he stands againsbackdrop of a stained-glass window showing Jesu

prayer in the garden of Gethsemane.

Dialogue reveals in passing that Superman has reathe symbolically significant age of 33. And, as he laun

himself into flight at one point, the superhero extendarms in the manner of Christ on the cross.

Along with these theological flourishes, "Man of S

also includes plot details that touch on real-life morasues. Thus Zod is committed to a form of eugenics

arose on Krypton in the lead-up to its disintegration. Uthis scheme, children were bred to fulfill a predeterm

social role and their lives before birth were spent ntheir mothers' wombs, but in an artificial atmosp

within which they were nurtured en masse.

Superman's parents were completely opposed to

system, and saw to it that Superman became the first on Krypton in many years born in the natural way. T

clashing views on this subject constituted one ofsources of conflict between Zod and Jor-El.

Flash forward, and Zod's motivation in tracking Su

man down is shown to be connected to his efforts topetuate the race of their vanished planet by a return t

favored method of social and genetic engineering.

All of this might have been explored at some length

there not been a huge budget for special effects to expOr perhaps there was the lurking fear that adolescent

would be bored by such subtleties.

Whatever the cause, all human interest the picturetially contains yields, in the end, to pure chaotic spect

Superman and his adversaries hurl each other about; scrapers are leveled and oil trucks ignited. Then it's o

more of the same in a different locale.

The film contains much intense but bloodless violea fleeting sexual advance and occasional crude and c
