Today’s Message

The Foolish Wisdom of the Cross Pastor T. Scott Daniels

Benediction

Dr. T. Scott Daniels

with Dr. T. Scott Daniels “The Foolish Wisdom of the Cross” – 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

“Remove from Christianity its ability to shock and it is altogether destroyed. It then becomes a tiny superficial thing, capable neither of inflicting deep wounds

nor of healing them.” – Soren Kierkegaard The Challenge of Preaching Christ • Ancient cities, like Corinth, prided themselves on their growing intellectual

and cultural life. In a time of peace brought about through massive displays of Roman power, political philosophers were highly admired for their sophisticated wisdom.

• Imagine what it would have been like for the Apostle Paul to enter into the heart of a growing city and stand up to speak about Jesus of Nazareth, who had been crucified by the Romans but raised from the dead by God. This crucified rabbi-carpenter was now the Lord of the entire world, calling people to forsake their current values and convictions and follow him in faithful obedience.

• “The message of the cross was, and is, the craziest message anyone could imagine. This wasn’t a smart new philosophy, it was madness. It was not an appeal to high culture. It was news of an executed criminal from a despised race.” – NT Wright

• The message of Christ was not great news for the Jewish people either. The idea of being “hung on a tree” was a sign of shame and humiliation. One may have a Messiah, or one may have a crucifixion; but one can’t have both. From the perspective of Judaism “Messiah” meant power, splendor, and triumph; “crucifixion” meant weakness, humiliation, and defeat. A crucified messiah is a scandal. The Messiah ought to be out defeating pagans, not being killed by them.

• Paul knew full well, to announce the upside-down message of Jesus and his cross was to invite the scorn of both Jews and Gentiles alike.

It is the Power of God • For Paul, the event of the cross and resurrection is the dividing point in

human history. Christ’s death and resurrection marked the “turning of the ages,” whereby God decisively judged and condemned the present and is in the process of bringing the current age to an end. Now that history has been turned upside-down at the cross what was once considered wise is now foolish and what used to be considered foolish is now true wisdom.

• Those who still belong to the “present age” are thus perishing with it. For them, the cross is still foolishness. On the other hand, those who are “being saved,” because they have been called and they believe, have come to see their present existence as the result of God’s unbelievable redeeming power. They are not just saved but they are being saved by the power of the cross and the message of God’s salvation as it is articulated and embodied in the way of the cross.

The Wisdom of the Cross • Because as believers we often hear the message of the cross through

“Sunday-ears” we overlook how foolish the way of the cross sounds to “Monday-ears”. There are many examples of the seeming foolishness of the cross, but here are a few examples Paul points to:

• The Strength of Meekness. The history of the world is a history of competing powers. In the first century peace (the Pax Romana) had been established through power. The message of the cross is that true peace is not made through power but through meekness. True strength is not the ability to coerce the other but to love the other. Strength is not the ability to control but the willingness to live sacrificially.

• Reconciliation through Forgiveness. The world creates order through forms of threat. In fact, the cross is the penalty for living as a threat to order. The cross invites not only forgiveness of one another but the willingness to trust “the other.” The world creates boundaries for peace. The cross breaks boundaries for peace.

• God is with the Marginalized. It is the human tendency to point to those who are blessed in human terms (wealth, fame, strength, etc.) as those on whom God has obviously shown favor. The message of the cross, however, is that God is most clearly revealed as the rejected (crucified) Lord from the margins (Nazareth) of a marginalized people (the Israelites).

• God uses the Weak. Paul reminds the Corinthians that most of them were, by the culture’s standards, ‘nobodies’. But God transformed those who were ‘no-bodies’ into ‘some-bodies’. Not that the Corinthians are now noble in terms the world understands, but they are now – by grace – God’s people. The result is not that they have anything to boast about personally. But they can boast in “Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God.”

The Christian good news is all about God dying on a rubbish-heap at the wrong end of the Empire. It’s all about God babbling nonsense to

a room full of philosophers. It’s all about the true God confronting the world of posturing, power and prestige, and overthrowing it in

order to set up his own kingdom, a kingdom in which the weak and the foolish find themselves just as welcome as the strong and the

wise, if not more so. – NT Wright

It rests on the time-line of history like a compelling diamond. Its

tragedy summons all sufferers. Its absurdity attracts all cynics. Its hope lures all searchers. History has idolized and despised it, gold-

plated and burned it, worn and trashed it. History has done everything but ignore it. How could you ignore such a piece of

lumber? Suspended on its beams is the greatest claim in history. A crucified carpenter claiming to be God on earth. Divine. Eternal. The death-slayer. Never has timber been regarded so sacred. No wonder

the apostle Paul called the cross event the core of the gospel. It's bottom line sobering: if the account is true, it is history's hinge.

Period. If not, the cross is history's hoax. Which is the cross for you, hinge or hoax? Or in the words of Jesus,

"Who do you say that I am?" – Max Lucado

The staff at PazNaz —ministerial staff and

support staff — seek to

“equip the saints for the work of ministry,

for building up the body of Christ,

until all of us come to the unity of the faith and

of the knowledge of the Son of God,

to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of

Christ.”
