SQUIRT/MITE DEVELOPMENT CAMPJune 16-21 / Birth Years 03, 04 & 05This program is designed to promote individual hockey skills and primary team play concepts in an enthusiastic, fun, safe, and structured environment. Angling rather than checking is introduced. Participants will be divided into 6 teams, organized by age, experience, and ability. Each group is supervised by 3-4 leadership counselors and coached by 2 instructors. Participants receive 4 ice sessions daily, daily video taping, and a personalized evaluation at the end of the week. Apart from hockey, this camp provides a valuable life experience ― our staff does a great job with players of this age, many of whom are away from home for the first time.

ALL PROGRAMS INCLUDE:ON-ICE TRAININGDaily Ice Time: Each student receives 4 daily ice sessions beginning on Sunday evening with demanding combination drills and station training. The 4 sessions are de-signed to develop skating skills, puck fundamentals, checking (if applicable), and team play. Players will participate in a daily controlled scrimmage. Our innovative station training and flow drills maximize participation and movement.

Skating Development: Skating is the single most important skill in hockey. Our staff use the most modern, innovative instructional techniques, along with video replay on our big-screen television, to improve posture, skating efficiency, stride, balance, arm movement, recovery, and more. Video replays are viewed immediately following each skating session.

On-Ice Skills: Each day, players will be taken through a progression of skills in stickhandling, passing, shooting and checking. We use the most modern innovative teach-ing aids to help players develop these skills. To maximize skill development for forwards and defensemen alike, all skills are taught in a position-specific manner.

Team Play: Team play is designed to educate players on concepts, strategies, systems and positioning to not only enhance individually but from a team aspect as well. Each day a different concept is discussed (defensive zone coverage, offensive zone play & breakouts) and drills will be focused on that concept.

Controlled Scrimmage: Each evening, players will participate in a scrimmage, with coaches reinforcing the day’s teaching. On Friday afternoon, teams will play a final match under game conditions. Teams and lines are matched to ensure each participant’s development. As players age, the scrimmages become more competitive.

On-Ice Testing: Girls’ Teen, Pee Wee and older, individual tests are conducted, with results compared to averages established throughout years of past testing. Players receive their results in their take-home packets.

Goaltenders Are Unique: Goaltending is a game of situations, and all great goaltenders have a strong fundamental base. Historically, goaltenders have had to choose between a “goal-tender only” camp offering position-specific development but no actual game situations, or a traditional hockey camp offering game situations but limited goaltender-specific instruc-tion. Miami’s programs allow goaltenders to receive both. Monday through Thursday, there are goalie-specific ice sessions in which position-specific drills and concepts are developed.

OFF-ICE CLASSROOMDaily Video Replay: Each player will see personal video footage of the skating skill of the day, viewed on our big-screen monitor, with coach evaluation.

Daily Lecture Sessions: Each group/team will have a daily session including NHL and collegiate game highlight instructional videos, along with team and individual concepts, rules, sportsmanship, systems, and the avenues of combining higher education with hockey.

OFF-ICE TRAININGOff-ice activities are designed to inspire, involve, and help players unwind. Activities may vary daily and by program, and include those listed below. New upgraded activities have been added for all programs. • Team Building: group activities designed to stress teamwork and problem solving. • Off-Ice Testing: with results compared to past camp and national norms• Dryland Training: combining conditioning and “speed and quickness” training• Pool Time: swimming in Miami’s beautiful Recreation and Aquatic Center• Yoga: to improve flexibility, concentration, and agility (Bantam and above)• Rock Climbing: players will have the chance to climb the rock wall at Miami’s Recreation and Aquatic Center• Indoor Soccer: to help the players’ foot speed, agility, acceleration and cardio• Off-ice Stick handling: to improve players puck handling skills through challenging stations
