Term 2 Week 5 Friday 3 rd June 2017 From The Principal Kia ora all China Trip It has been great to be back at school this week having spent last week in China. The purpose of the trip was to meet with Education Agents in Nanchang, Shanghai and Guangzhou who work with Chinese families interested in sending their students to New Zealand schools as International Students. We will have a Chinese International student in our school during Term 3 and a group of students from China in Term 3 for two weeks at this stage. I was able to put some time into planning for the China Trip in April 2018, where we are intending on taking a group of Oropi students. I have had strong interest in this trip for next year to make it viable. New students A special welcome to Patricia Brooker who has joined Kiwi and Ashton Albert who has joined Pukeko. We are pleased to have you at Oropi School and we wish you all the best. New Playground This was completed while I was away and on return became aware of the issue with the flying fox which is not functioning as it should. I immediately made a call to the project manager and I am pleased to say the problem is being rectified. Parts are being returned to the factory in Auckland and we should have the flying fox re-installed before the end of this term. Thanks for your patience. Book Week and Cross Country Thank you everybody for the strong parent support we have had at all these events this week. I would like to give a special thanks to Jan Pendergrast and her supporting crew of staff for all the efforts that have gone into Book Week, including the Parade. All the student entries were fabulous. Thank you for your support. The Cross Country had a very positive vibe this year and it was the first year since I can remember where we had no rain. This event certainly gives a ‘real’ cross country experience for our children and again was very well supported by our parents. I was especially proud of all the children giving it a go and the nurturing support provided by our senior students. Thank you Mr Lewis for organising this event. You can see photos and results further on in the newsletter as a celebration of these events. Well done to our place getters and to all who participated. Have a great long weekend everyone! Notices

Article in Stuff re Overcrowding Some of you may have noticed that Oropi School was mentioned as a school in the Bay of Plenty with one of the highest overcrowding percentages in relation to student population. Please note this percentage was based on 2015-2016 data that the Ministry had about the school, before all our new building work was complete. We are no longer an overcrowded school. With continued roll growth however, we would be heading that way again if we were not going to be provided with future building funding. We are receiving future building funding however and Andrew King should be able to confirm this along with expected time frames within the next few weeks. Principal Parent Hui – 8th June Please remember to confirm your attendance by emailing or phoning the office. Wrap It Up is changing Wrap It Up are joining with Kindo this term which means things will change slightly for our families. Our online shop will look a little different, but still offer you the convenience of paying your child’s school needs online at anytime. There will be more ways to pay, and all of your students will be on the same page making it quicker and easier to shop. We will send out lots of information in the next few weeks, showing you how to register, top-up your account and make purchases. More updates coming soon. Calf Club It is almost time to start planning for Calf Club 2017. We will be looking at putting together another great raffle this year and are looking for sponsors to donate items or funds to buy fantastic prizes. In previous years we have had bikes, ipads, books, family adventure vouchers, and lots of other cool prizes. Please contact Kylie in the office if you wish to be a sponsor or know of someone who could help lock in some great prizes. Bus It is really important that we are notified when you collect your child / children from School before 2pm each day. We have 200 students using the bus every day, and each child must be accounted for. Please remember to phone or email the office BEFORE 2pm if you are going to collect your children from school. Please remind your children to report to the bus area promptly at the end of the day, to avoid missing the bus. *If you notice a child at the bus stop whose parents have not arrived yet, please either stay with them until their parents arrive, or phone the office and we can follow up. Let’s all look out for each other and make sure everyone gets home safely. Friday Lunches A reminder that Friday lunches happen every week on a Friday. Wrap it up is the preferred way to order lunch. Lunch orders will now be taken from the office on a Thursday morning. If paying by cash, please bring your lunch order form and payment to the office, not your classroom. Lunch order forms are available from reception. You are welcome to take several of these home so you have them on hand. If you order on wrap it up, you do not need to bring the order form to School. Absences Please remember to call and leave a message before 9am if your child is absent. Please include the reason your child is absent in the answerphone message (illness or family). Simply calling to say your child is absent is not enough information, as we need to know the reason. We have a new texting system up and running now. If your child has been marked absent on the roll, and we have not been notified, you will receive a text message. Please do not ignore this message. You must text back, or call the absent line to notify us of the reason your child is away. Jacket Orders for Winter Jackets that were pre-ordered in Term 1 have arrived today. We have a few sizes available from this order. First to pay gets the spare jackets. If your size is not available we can pre order a jacket for you. They take at least 6 weeks to arrive and cost $60 each.

Colin The Cat

Colin Colin is a pitch black and snow white cat with light green eyes. Colin is the laziest animal on earth but is as sneaky as a ninja. Colin is the soft, cool, Oropi School cat. He is the fastest and greediest animal ever! His claws are as sharp as knives. His meow can be heard from across the other side of the school. He uses his sharp claws to hunt his prey. I think Colin is amazing and also crazy. I think that Colin is the most adventurous cat in the universe. By Jason Ford. Kea Class.
